Boom Boom by Belgian photographer Jente Waerzeggers offers a unique glimpse into his work at night over recent years. In this book, Waerzeggers explores his deep fascination with self-expression in all its possible forms. Clothing, make-up, tattoos, piercings, hairstyles and accessories all reveal something about the individual. Presented as a series, the images reflect contemporary nightlife culture.

As an integral part of the nightclub’s scenography, the dancer becomes a body of symbols. Waerzeggers’ photographs are filled with bootlegged corporate logos, wordplay, subversion and references to pop culture.

Waerzeggers builds a relationship with his subjects that is entirely mutual. He documents while participating, and his subjects want to be seen. The night is dark and not easily captured, but Boom Boom succeeds remarkably well in doing so.

Jente Waerzeggers (•1999) is a Belgian photographer and musician. He is part of Not So Difficult Magazine, the label Kontakt Group, the band Lieve Jongens, and is the founder of (Y)-Publishing.

From 2018 until 2026 Jente Waerzeggers worked as a nightlife photographer; this book marks the end of that endeavour. Starting out at friends’ parties and ‘nacht’ in Stelplaats, Leuven, he has gone one to photograph for venues and collectives in Brussels, in Belgium and abroad such as V23, Slagwerk, Horst, C12, Listen Festival, Celebration of Life, and Dekmantel.

Waerzeggers is interested in the ways people consciously and unconsciously present themselves in society. What do their houses look like, their trash, their advertisements, their selfies? By sifting through his archive of photos and screenshots, he looks for through lines that paint a bigger picture.
