vertreten, darunter “A Kiss To Build A Dream On,” ‘La Vie En Rose,” “Hello, Dolly!” und zwei Duette

Eine Sammlung für M. Ward-Fans jeden Jahrgangs. "For Beginners: The Best Of M. Ward" versammelt 14 Tracks aus seiner gesamten Merge Records Discografie, einschließlich des neu aufgenommenen Songs "Cry". "For Beginners" ist sowohl eine Fibel und ein Mixtape mit Lieblingsstücken. Die Reihenfolge der Songs ist so ausgetüftelt, dass ihnen neues Leben eingehaucht wird. Beginnend mit "Chinese Translation" und "Poison Cup" vom 2006 erschienenen Album "Post-War", zeigt "For Beginners", wie Ward sein Können im Studio ausbaut. Seine einzigartige Coverversion von David Bowies "Let's Dance", aus dem 2003er Album "Transfiguration of Vincent", geht über in das überschwängliche "Never Had Nobody Like You" vom 2009er Album "Hold Time". Anstatt einer sauberen Entwicklungslinie, die ein chronologisches Arrangement suggeriert, ist das, was "For Beginners" zusammenhält, ist Wards tadelloses Können als Songwriter, das im Fokus bleibt während sich sein Sound von Low-Fi-Heimaufnahmen zu elektrischen, radiotauglichen Stompern und wieder zurück bewegt. Pünktlich zum 35-jährigen Jubiläum von Merge Records wird dieses Album eines der beliebtesten Künstler des Labels veröffentlicht und enthält mit dem Song "Cry" die erste neue M. Ward Aufnahme auf Merge seit 2018. "Cry" ist eine reduzierte Coverversion des Godley & Creme Pop-Klassikers, aufgenommen mit dem Folk Bitch Trio aus Melbourne, Australien. M. Ward über "Cry": ""Cry" wurde in einem tasmanischen Museum für moderne Kunst namens MONA aufgenommen. Ich saß am Ende eines langen Flurs, nur wenige Meter entfernt von Anselm Kiefers Skulptur eines 20 Fuß hohen Stapel von Bleibüchern, und links und rechts von mir, um ein einziges Mikrofon herum, saß das Folk Bitch Trio; wir probten und nahmen "Cry" in etwa 30 Minuten auf. Es ist mir ein Vergnügen, diesen Song zu einer Sammlung meiner schönsten Erinnerungen an das Musikmachen hinzuzufügen." Der Song ist der perfekte Schlussstein für eine Sammlung dieser Art und fasst Wards Stärke als Musiker zusammen: der Reichtum, den er in spärlichen Aufnahmen erreicht, sein Talent für Zusammenarbeit und seine Fähigkeit, die Seele eines akribisch ausgearbeiteten Popsongs zu durchschauen. Born in Los Angeles in the early 1990s via a residency of week after week jam sessions at a dive club called Raji’s—then relocating to New Orleans—the band’s trajectory lasted about a decade and ended when Hurricane Katrina demolished their homes and the band members scattered. Key members included Vicki Peterson (Bangles), Susan Cowsill (The Cowsills), Peter Holsapple (The dBs, R.E.M.), and many more—including the only member who has been with them from the beginning, Mark Walton (Giant Sand, The Dream Syndicate). However, there were also several singer/songwriters (Carlo Nuccio, Gary Eaton, Ray Ganucheau) without an impressive pedigree that shine as brightly as their slightly more famous bandmates. The best possible comparison that we can make is that the Continental Drifters had a similar vibe to the classic roots combo Delaney & Bonnie & Friends—more of a “collective’ than a band—in which there were several distinctly original lead singers, blistering sidemen instrumentalists and an inspiring blend of both original and seminal cover songs with a southern fried blue-eyed soul approach that couldn’t be beat.

Künstler wie The Hooterville Trolley, The Litter, The Music Machine, The Venturie "5", The Lyrics oder The Nightcrawlers werfen ein Licht auf britische Invasionsbands wie die Who, Kinks und Rolling Stones, heimische Garagenblumen und das dunkle Ende der psychedelischen Straße. Gespickt mit fuzziger Gitarre, Enthusiasmus, treibendem Beat und einer Einstellung, die Proto-Punk war, bleibt diese Musik frisch und wird bereits von einer neuen Generation angenommen. Zum 50.-jährigen Jubiläum der Band erscheint am 2. September das Album „The Best Of Roxy Music”, welches 8 ihrer Studioalben enthält.

Diese Sammlung wird zum ersten Mal auf Vinyl veröffentlicht und enthält alle klassischen Singles wie ”More Than This”, ”Jealous Guy”, ”Love Is The Drug” und ”Virginia Plain”. „The Best Of Roxy Music“
wurde von Miles Showell in den Abbey Road Studios in half speed neu geschnitten und enthält ein neues überarbeitetes Artwork, komplett mit einem glänzenden Laminat-Gatefold-Finish.

“Ornithology: The Best of Bird” is a new compilation bringing together 11 cuts from legendary jazz saxophonist Charlie Parker. Designed as an introduction to this influential artist, it covers Bird’s prime years between 1945 and 1953, with cuts including “Ko-Ko,” “Billie’s Bounce,” and “Groovin’ High”. Included on the back of the newly designed sleeve is a new essay by GRAMMY® award winning writer Ashley Kahn.

Der deutsche Literat, Kritiker und ehemaliges Mitglied der Fernsehsendung "Das Literarische Quartet", Maxim Biller, hat mit der Unterstützung des Berliner Multiinstrumentalisten Malakoff Kowalski zwölf von ihm selbst komponierte Lieder aufgenommen. Das Ergebnis ihre Kollaboration heißt "Studio" und ist ein beeindruckendes, zeitloses Werk, das sich musikalisch - man kann diese illustren Namen durchaus zum Vergleich heranziehen - an Größen wie Leonard Cohen, Serge Gainsbourg oder Paolo Conte anlehnt. Die "Studio"-Songs sind politisch, melancholisch, romantisch, vor allem aber sehr außergewöhnlich. Einen singenden Schriftsteller im deutschsprachigen Raum - das hat es schon Jahrzehnte nicht mehr gegeben!

It's difficult to ''label'' the songs of this authoritative and necessary official reissue (after the shameful fake of 10 years ago). ''Zombi'' and ''In the Land of the Zombi'' are two electro disco-funks from 1979, therefore from three years before was born the ''Italo-Disco'' style, certainly more powerful, aggressive and more electronic than the ''Made in Italy'' disco style of the 2nd half of the 70s (Fratelli La Bionda, Pino Presti, Claudio Simonetti, Celso Valli and others.). The creation of the original 7" by Salvatore Ida, great musician and bandleader - to whom this excellent reissue is dedicated - was a sort of game for the authors of the two pieces: Federico Ida and Massimo Ida, were protagonists 4 years before of the Italian progressive rock scene with the sister Silvana Ida, Marcello Surace and Franco Vinci thanks to the immeasurable and acclaimed album ''Apoteosi''. So The Zombies were destined to pair with another easy '79 joke by the Ida brothers: ''Let's Go'' and ''Mustang'' by Sandwich, also reissued on 12inch by Best Record Italy. The Zombies comes out with the original artwork of the time, but in a full embossed picture sleeve and released in the classic black vinyl and on red vinyl with black shades (limited edition with red copies numbered manually (1/250: 2/250 and so on...) What else to add except that: the two long versions of ''Zombi'' and ''In the Land of the Zombi'' were re-edited by Massimo Berardi, always diligent and active, as well as tidy and aware of where he was putting his hands, are fundamental in order to complete this 12" fully remastered by Dom Scuteri.

Whatever he liked to do, he immediately embodied it, instantly identifying with what he was passionate about. However, one certainly cannot expect the sixteen-year-old and self-taught disc jockey to be ready as a composer for his first time in a recording studio. He became an author, arranger and performer shortly after, but for his first experience on vinyl he had to resort to a cover, as many did to get noticed and have the limelight on him. There was no mistake in choosing 'Living with Passion'' by the Canadian band Moral Support, but only how to write the title of the piece on the album cover!!! At the time, not all Italian printers knew English well, which is why Italo Disco soon became sadly famous for the huge blunders that were written. It was love at first sight for Roberto, who played the song written and produced by Richard Cranford and Sandro Durante every night in the disco. There were some imperfections due to inexperience, but the electronics, more and more imperious and overwhelming, won over everything, effectively decreeing the beginning of a new musical style. The Italian one. Dave Mathmos did well to have the same passion as Onofri and his DJ Program Band, developing an excellent version that gave new life to the piece from 40 years ago, reprinted by Best Record in two different and limited editions, in black vinyl and in green vinyl with black shades. Both editions come out with the artwork and credits in relief and with the image of the very young DJ Onofri immortalized next to a drum kit with the microphone in his hand, ready as always to make people jump and have fun.
