Sarah Webster Fabio published a plethora of poetry collections and
works of cultural criticism
Together to the Tune of Coltrane's "Equinox" is her fourth and final record for
Folkways, and sees her vivid language and distinctive voice becoming enmeshed
with a dynamic backdrop of exploratory jazz. Fabio pays homage to Black jazz
and blues musicians Duke Ellington, Bessie Smith, Billie Holiday, and John
Coltrane. Fabio's "Together" is set to the tune of Coltrane's "Equinox," in which her
words "compose the air."
Often referred to as the "mother of Black studies," Fabio is recognized for her
contributions to founding the West Coast Black Arts Movement and for helping to
establish Black Studies as an academic discipline. As a poet, performer, scholar,
educator, and cultural critic, she published countless poetry collections and
works of cultural criticism, wrote for local and national publications, including
Black World and Black Scholar, and recorded four albums with Folkways.

Die Entstehungsgeschichte von Values Here ist lang: Chui und Porcell trafen sich zum ersten Mal vor Jahren bei einer Shelter-Show in Chuis' Heimatstadt Barcelona, Spanien. Das Album selbst ist optimistisch und hoffnungsvoll und vermittelt ein positives Mindset. Es gibt Tracks mit klassischem New York Hardcore-Einfluss wie das treffend betitelte "Bring Me The PMA" und solche, die sich in Pop-Rock-Gefilde wagen, wie "We Get Stronger". Durch die Produktion von Tom Soares (Judge, Shelter) und dem Mastering von Dave Kutch (Billie Eilish, The Weeknd) war die Band in der Lage, einen dynamischen Sound zu kreieren, der sowohl ins Radio passt als auch zum Herumspringen in einem Moshpit geeignet ist. ‘VOLCANO’ follows Jungle’s previous album ‘Loving In Stereo’, which proved to be a landmark moment for the acclaimed UK duo. It achieved their highest domestic UK chart position to date debuting at #3, while also achieving their best ever album chart positions in key international territories such as Australia, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, Netherlands; and in the US it catapulted to #1 on the Billboard Dance Albums chart which led to major Arena shows as guests to Billie Eilish.

The free-spirited energy that runs right through ‘VOLCANO’ reflects how organically it came together. J and T had written most of the record on tour before starting the recording process while staying in an Airbnb in Los Angeles. It was later completed back home in London at their favourite location, Studio B at Metropolis Studios. This time around, the duo wanted to include a wider variety of voices within the album. This new album, Leisureland, marks a return to his more ramshackle world of recording - guitars and temperamentally unpredictable analogue keyboards, beat-boxes and loops in conjunction with a real drummer, Sam Shepherd, who he met in a local coffee shop in Catskill, New York. He was delighted to find that Sam lived around the corner and could easily drop by to put drums on newly recorded tracks. The recording methodology may have been Contemporary American but the subject matter is almost entirely British. It also contains more instrumentals than any of his previous albums.

Green Day haben dem Punk-Rock ohne Zweifel zu einer Art Renaissance verholfen. Besonders live überzeugt die Band in ihrer über 30-jährigen Bandgeschichte durch eine fulminante Show. Green Day hat viel zu beweisen. Weil das kalifornische Erfolgstrio mit seinen knappen Songs derart nahe beim Sound britischer Punk-Originale wie The Jam oder The Buzzcocks liegt, sind die Bandmitglieder in einigen Kritikerkreisen als Opportunisten verschrien, die die einst rebellische Musik zur Massenware verhunzen wollten. Aber die Band spielt mit unbändiger Energie, verfehlt ihre Publikumswirkung nie, präsentiert ein schlankes, energiegeladenes Spektakel. Hier steht die Musik im Mittelpunkt, präzise dirigiert der grollende Sänger und Gitarrist Billie Joe Armstrong. Stilistisch beeinflusste Lous Armstrong fast alle nachkommenden Trompeter der traditionellen Jazzstile. Darüber hinaus ist Satchmo, dessen unverwechselbare Stimme seine weltweite Popularität begründete, neben Billie Holiday und Ella Fitzgerald einer der bekanntesten Sänger des Jazz. Armstrongs musikalische Wurzeln lagen im New-Orleans-Jazz. Adam Lambert war schon immer bestechend gut darin, die Songs anderer Künstler und Künstlerinnen zu interpretieren – von seinen Anfängen bei „American Idol“ über seinen Auftritt bei den Kennedy Centre Honours 2018, wo er Cher mit seiner fast zärtlichen Version ihres Megahits „Believe“ zu Tränen rührte, bis hin zu seiner Rolle als aktueller Sänger von Queen.

Nun geht der Grammy-nominierte Künstler konsequent den nächsten Schritt und kündigt ein ganzes Album ausgesuchter Coversongs an. „High Drama“ erscheint am 24. Februar 2023 und markiert zugleich sein Debüt bei Warner Music. „High Drama“ – der Titel des neuen Albums ist natürlich nicht von ungefähr gewählt, denn der US-Amerikaner liebt die große Geste. Und wir erleben ihn hier mehr denn je als einen Künstler, der sich in seiner eigenen Haut wohlfühlt, der voll und ganz er selbst ist – und jede Minute davon auskostet.

Tasteful double album with outstanding female singers. When it comes to vocal art alone, the jazz world is firmly in the hands of women. Just think of Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald or Nina Simone. But singers of younger days, such as Sarah Vaughan or Diana Krall, are no less impressive with their enchanting voices. Reason enough for the French label Wagram to unite the most renowned female singers of the last decades on a double album.
