Acclaimed Christian Raphael Prize winner’s debut for Topic Records, produced by Eliza Carthy. The Sorrow Songs: Folk Songs of Black British Experience is the upcoming record by Cornwall-based folk singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Angeline Morrison, her debut for on the historic Topic Records label. Produced by Eliza Carthy and featuring some of her beautiful, soaring string arrangements, The Sorrow Songs was recorded in Cornwall at Cube Studios and is a work of what Angeline calls ‘re-storying.’

The stellar line-up of musicians on this album includes Cohen Braithwaite-Kilcoyne (anglo concertina, melodeon, vocals), Clarke Camilleri (guitar, banjo, vocals), Hamilton Gross (violin, vocals), Rosie Crow (piano, vocals), Alex Neilson (drums, vocals), Eliza Carthy (violin, fiddlesticks, vocals), Angeline Morrison (vocals, autoharp, double bass) and features Martin Carthy on the album’s closing track.

Sorrow Songs by Angeline Morrison, released 8 March 2024, includes the following tracks: "Black John", "The Beautiful Spotted Black Boy", "Interlude - Nobody Round Here Likes It", "Cinnamon Water" and more.

Die schönsten, traurigsten und innigsten Songs kommen noch immer aus Skandinavien. Als Christian Kjellvander sich in dem winzigen Dorf Österåker, eine halbe Autostunde nördlich von Stockholm, eine alte Kirche kaufte, war klar, dass er seine Heimat gefunden hatte: für sich, seine Familie und seine Songs. Der schwedische Singer/Songwriter brauchte einen Ausgangs- und einen Endpunkt, dazwischen kann er mit seinen Liedern auf der ganze Welt unterwegs sein, im Vorprogramm von Leonard Cohen oder Kris Kristofferson singen, mit seinen Bandprojekten Loosegoats und Songs Of Soil touren oder Solo-Konzerte spielen, die nur so vor Intensität und Erhabenheit leuchten. So wie sein neues Album "A Village: Natural Light" es schon im Titel trägt. Lieder über nicht weniger als Leben, Lieben und Sterben. Es sind keine Lieder, die einen weit fort tragen, sondern sie stehen mit beiden Beinen fest auf dem Boden. Und doch atmen sie etwas Überirdisches, eine raue Schönheit wie in einem kargen, nördlichen Wald und die Klarheit einer mittendrin entspringenden Quelle. Kjellvander erzählt, er habe, als er diese Lieder schrieb, auf dem Dorffriedhof als Leichengräber gearbeitet. Nicht, weil er so morbide wäre, sondern weil er den wahrhaftigsten Job, den es nur geben kann, machen wollte. Das setzt er als Songwriter konsequent fort Und als Musiker lässt er die Lieder dann so hell erstrahlen, dass man ihn quasi vor sich sieht, wie er sich die Erde von den Händen reibt, die Gitarre nimmt und in seiner Kirche seine Stimme erhebt.

In diesen Tagen, in denen Ausgrenzung und Abschottung zu regieren scheinen, braucht es Künstler wie Christian Kjellvander. Der schwedische Singer/Songwriter ist einer, der das Fremde umarmt und das zutiefst Menschliche auslotet. Bereits der Titel seines neunten Albums, "Wild Hxmans", zeigt: etwas ist anders, irritierend. Denn Kjellvander macht uns ein X für ein U vor. Das ist gut, denn er macht uns nachdenklich und sensibilisiert. Wir nutzen ein X, um unsere Stimme abzugeben. Aber auch, um einen Fehler grob unkenntlich zu machen. "Einfach durchstreichen und weg - wenn Leute versuchen, dieses Prinzip auf andere Menschen anzuwenden, haben wir ein Problem", sagt der Musiker, dessen Wunderstimme mal an Leonard Cohen, mal an Neil Young und mal an David Sylvian erinnert. Und so erzählt uns der 42-JaÌêhrige in sieben rauen wie soghaften Songs zwischen Folk, Blues, Americana und Free Jazz von Abschied und Aufbruch, von Flucht und dem Gefühl, neu in einer Welt zu sein. So erschafft Kjellvander einen Sound, der ruhig atmet und pulsiert, um sich dann aus dieser Intimität in eine unglaubliche Dynamik hineinzufiebern, in etwas Dunkles, Sattes, Schwüles. Classic black vinyl plus bonus 7"-single with two exclusive tracks! Babydoll is the fifth Rat Columns album and, following 2021's Pacific Kiss, the second to be released on Tough Love. The recordings took place in Perth, Western Australia, partially by engineer Jason Hayles in a 1960's office building that formerly housed the secretarial pool of a successful mattress company, and partially by DW in an industrial unit, and feature the ensemble cast of Taylah McLean, Chris Grunwaldt, Scott Payne, Richard Ingham, Cohen Bourgault and, of course, DW himself. It was then mixed and mastered in Melbourne by Mikey Young and Joseph Carra, respectively. Babydoll seems to mark a return to a murkier, dirgier Rat Columns format. Distortion is fetishized again and many small amplifiers were tortured in the album's production. Tempos have drifted down and the lyrical concerns move ever inward, in an inverse bloom. The mood is dour, introspective, circular, the songs long, and short attention spans are neglected. 'Cerulean Blue' churns through a crystalline memoryscape, homaging low-brow grunge auto-fiction and a partial history of mid-period rave. 'Life In The Jungle' is a fever dream of imperialist wartime fantasy projection. 'Heavenly Assault' attempts a crushing density amid visions of transcendent devotion. 'Virtual Sweden' takes us ever northwards into the frosted tip of Scandinavian détente. 'Babydoll', like 'Cerulean Blue', homages a primarily imagined low-cosmopolitan world of alt-lit digi-poets, bedroom fantasists, underwater prisons for gorgeous, gorgeous girls. 'Bees Make Honey' lets more sophisticated music machines into the conversation, and marks the first use of vocal tuning software on a Rat Columns album, albeit in an avant-amateurist fashion. 'Jane, I Live For You' enters the space-ballad race, dreaming of synthetic folk-rockers, leaning on sampler keybeds in the half-light. 'December' is yet another tribute to fallen Stars, mansions on the hill, winter skin in cashmere sweaters, truth in education, love, faith, (im)purity. In all these respects, it is a classic Rat Columns record. Because all Rat Columns records are classic records.

The Fifth Chapter comes on the back of what has undoubtedly been Beverley’s most successful period ever as the iconic Ms Knight celebrates 30 years making music with several top 10 albums and over a million UK albums sold.
UK national TV appearances will support the album release - we expect Royal Variety, Strictly, Sunday Brunch, The One Show and BBC Breakfast news performances and interviews, while Beverley has already appeared on ITN News, and GoggleBox on the launch of the album.
Beverley will take on her biggest ever UK tour throughout October and November, to over 30,000 people, ending with a headline date at the London Palladium on November 14th. The album brings together some of the greatest contemporary songwriting talent including Diane Warren, Seb Coe, Ollie Green and Andrew Roachford, as well as co-production with the likes of AC Burrell, Jimmy Hogarth, Mitch Allen & Josh Cohen/DJ Waldie, The Fifth Chapter is a spectacular journey through the inspirations that have defined her incredible career.

Rozi Plain’s 2019 ‘What A Boost’ is reissued on eco vinyl via Memphis Industries. The reissue is timely, following on from the breakthrough success of her 2023 album, ‘Prize’. ‘What A Boost’ was self-produced with the help of a long list of musical friends including Kate Stables, Jamie Whitby Coles, Neil Smith (all This Is The Kit), Chris Cohen, Joel Wästberg (Sir Was) and Sam Amidon.

Released in April 2015 on Lost Map, and featuring contributions from Hot Chip’s Alexis Taylor, among others, her last album, ‘Friend’, was a deeply meaningful and wonderfully measured ode to memory, place, companionship and music’s remarkable power as an emotional salve.

Under the moniker of Jaye Jayle, Louisville guitarist/vocalist Evan Patterson has spent over a decade exploring the more abstract realms of the American singer-songwriter process. Zach Phillips und Olia Eichenbaum lernten sich 2018 online kennen und begannen schnell mit der Remote-Zusammenarbeit in Frankreich und Brooklyn. Zunächst arbeiteten sie unter dem Namen Pearly Gates zusammen und tourten 2019 durch Westeuropa. His debut was recorded in the winter of 2003 with assistance from Texas
chamber pop collective The Earlies, followed by three albums of original material
and one all-covers album. In 2011, a near-fatal car crash paralyzed his arms for
months. He spent his recovery time listening to some demos he'd made before
the crash. The material eventually culminated in the darkest and most intensely
personal collection of songs from him thus far and garnered widespread critical

confrontation with himself, each song shakes with danger. I Lie To You, the new
Micah P. Hinson album, comes from five days and five nights of recording in
Irpinia, South Italy, with production by Alessandro Asso Stefana (PJ Harvey, Mike
Patton, Vinicio Capossela). Accompanying Micah and Asso are Raffaele Tiseo's
celestial strings, Zeno De Rossi metaphysic drumming and the double bass
gentleman Greg Cohen. On this new album he sings, with his weathered, husky,
prophet-like voice, eleven tales of love, loss and regret, which once again reveal
his heart as an artist laid bare.

Produced by Eliza Carthy and featuring some of her beautiful, soaring
string arrangements, The Sorrow Songs was recorded in Cornwall at
Cube Studio and is a work of what she calls 're-storying'
"The traditional songs of the UK are rich with storytelling, and you can find songs
with examples of almost any kind of situation or person you can think of. But
whilst people of the African diaspora have been present in these islands since at
least Roman Times, their histories are little known - and they don't tend to appear
in the folk songs of these islands." Angeline Morrison began to wonder if she
could discover more about the lives of these ordinary and extraordinary Black
ancestors and create an album of songs in the sonic style of UK folk and
traditional music, in the hope that this silent space could then begin to be filled
with stories. With the help of Arts Council National Lottery funding, Angeline
began what became a year of research into this neglected area of Black British
history. The Sorrow Songs: Folk Songs of Black British Experience is the result.
Released to commemorate Black History Month in October, this powerful record
is intended to honour these Black ancestors who lived in these islands and to act
as a gift to the folk community.
The musicians on the album are: Cohen Braithwaite-Kilcoyne (anglo concertina,
melodeon, vocals), Clarke Camilleri (guitar, banjo, vocals), Hamilton Gross (violin,
vocals), Rosie Crow (piano, vocals), Alex Neilson (drums, vocals), Eliza Carthy
(violin, fiddlesticks, vocals), Martin Carthy (guitar) and Angeline Morrison (vocals,
autoharp, double bass).
In July 2022, Angeline Morrison became the fourth recipient of the prestigious
Christian Raphael Prize, which generously supports the development of emerging
talent in the folk genre.

Both Aesop Rock and Homeboy Sandman are regarded as top tier lyricists known for pushing the envelope of creativity in their writing, while covering a wide range of topics and moods. However, sometimes things are inherently simple. Take for example, the origin of their collaboration, born from a mutual appreciation for each other as artists which became fully realized when Aesop Rock invited Homeboy Sandman to join him on tour in 2015. Traveling the country together, they built a connection beyond the music, resulting in a friendship that led to recording a few songs together, and before they knew it, there was an infestation...Lice.

Initially released in 2017 as a free direct download, followed by an extremely limited vinyl pressing sold exclusively on tour, Aesop Rock and Homeboy Sandman's Triple Fat Lice is finally available to fans everywhere.
