‘Workaround’ is the lucidly playful and ambitious solo debut album by rhythm-obsessive musician and DJ, Beatrice Dillon for PAN. It combines her love of UK club music’s syncopated suss and Afro-Caribbean influences with a gamely experimental approach to modern composition and stylistic fusion, using inventive sampling and luminous mixing techniques adapted from modern pop to express fresh ideas about groove-driven music and perpetuate its form with timeless, future-proofed clarity. Recorded over 2017-19 between studios in London, Berlin and New York, ‘Workaround’ renders a hypnotic series of polymetric permutations at a fixed 150bpm tempo.

Mixing meticulous FM synthesis and harmonics with crisply edited acoustic samples from a wide range of guests including UK Bhangra pioneer Kuljit Bhamra (tabla); Pharoah Sanders Band’s Jonny Lam (pedal steel guitar); techno innovators Laurel Halo (synth/vocal) and Batu (samples); Senegalese Griot Kadialy Kouyaté (Kora), Hemlock’s Untold and new music specialist Lucy Railton (cello); amongst others, Dillon deftly absorbs their distinct instrumental colours and melody into 14 bright and spacious computerised frameworks that suggest immersive, nuanced options for dancers, DJs and domestic play. ‘Workaround’ evolves Dillon’s notions in a coolly unfolding manner that speaks directly to the album’s literary and visual inspirations, ranging from James P. Carse’s book ‘Finite And Infinite Games’ to the abstract drawings of Tomma Abts or Jorinde Voigt as well as painter Bridget Riley’s essays on grids and colour. Operating inside this rooted but mutable theoretical wireframe, Dillon’s ideas come to life as interrelated, efficient patterns in a self-sufficient system.

With a naturally fractal-not-fractional logic, Dillon’s rhythms unfold between unresolved 5/4 tresillo patterns, complex tabla strokes and spark-jumping tics in a fluid, tactile dance of dynamic contrasts between strong/light, sudden/restrained, and bound/free made in reference to the notational instructions of choreographer Rudolf Laban. Working in and around the beat and philosophy, the album’s freehand physics contract and expand between the lissom rolls of Bhamra’s tabla in the first, to a harmonious balance of hard drum angles and swooping FM synth cadence featuring additional synth and vocal from Laurel Halo in ‘Workaround Two’, while the extruded strings of Lucy Railton create a sublime tension at the album’s palatecleansing denouement, triggering a scintillating run of technoid pieces that riff on the kind of swung physics found in Artwork’s seminal ‘Basic G’, or Rian Treanor’s disruptive flux with a singularly tight yet loose motion and infectious joy. Crucially, the album sees Dillon focus on dub music’s pliable emptiness, rather than the moody dematerialisation of reverb and echo. The substance of her music is rematerialised in supple, concise emotional curves
and soberly freed to enact its ideas in balletic plies, rugged parries and sweeping, capoeira-like floor action. Applying deeply canny insight drawn from her years of practice as sound designer, musician and hugely knowledgable/intuitive DJ, ‘Workaround’ can be heard as Dillon’s ingenious solution or key to unlocking to perceptions of stiffness, darkness or grid-locked rigidity in electronic music. And as such it speaks to an ideal of rhythm-based and experimental music ranging from the hypnotic senegalese mbalax of Mark Ernestus’ Ndagga Rhythm Force, through SND and, more currently, the hard drum torque of DJ Plead; to adroitly exert the sensation of weightlessness and freedom in the dance and personal headspace.

Editors-Frontmann Tom Smith veröffentlicht sein Solo-Debütalbum „There Is Nothing In The Dark Which Isn’t There In The Light“

Nach zwei Jahrzehnten als Frontmann von Editors und zwei Alben mit Smith & Burrows betritt Tom Smith mit „There Is Nothing In The Dark That Isn’t There In The Light“ nun endlich Solo-Territorium. Motiviert durch den Wunsch, zu den rohen, akustischen Anfängen seines Songwritings zurückzukehren, machte sich Smith daran, etwas Intimeres und Persönlicheres zu schaffen, weg vom kollaborativen Charakter seiner Bandprojekte.
Anfangs Stand noch der Gedanke im Raum, diese Songs wieder mit seinem langjährigen Kollaborateur Andy Burrows zu schreiben, entschied sich aber schließlich für einen einsameren Weg und engagierte stattdessen den Produzenten Iain Archer. Gemeinsam schufen sie ein Album, das auf emotionaler Ehrlichkeit, akustischen Texturen und Themen wie Verbundenheit, Erinnerung und Resilienz basiert.
Auf dem gesamten Album balanciert Smith reduzierte Arrangements mit filmischen Schnörkeln und schafft so eine dynamische Bandbreite – vom minimalistischen Schmerz von „Broken Time“ bis zum mitreißenden Drama von „Life Is For Living“.
Obwohl von Melancholie geprägt, schwingt auf dem Album letztlich Hoffnung mit – es unterstreicht Smiths Entwicklung als Songwriter und seinen Wunsch, Musik zu schaffen, die das Wesen seiner Persönlichkeit widerspiegelt.

Anfang 1996 veröffentlichte The Wedding Present "Mini" über Cooking Vinyl Records, eine EP mit sechs Titeln, deren Songs alle einen Bezug zum motorisierten Fahren hatten. Fast dreißig Jahre später hat David Gedge dieses Konzept wieder aufgegriffen! "Maxi" enthält sechs weitere Stücke, deren Titel/Inhalte sich alle auf diese Thema beziehen. Maxi erscheint über Clue Records und folgt kurz nach der Veröffentlichung von 40 - der Zusammenstellung, die den komplexen und faszinierenden Katalog von The Wedding Present in einem Box-Set mit vier Vinyl- und/oder vier CDs widerspiegelt. Der letzte Titel der Compilation ist "Hot Wheels" - ein Song, der nun auch auf Maxi zu finden ist, zusammen mit fünf weiteren Stücken. Obwohl Maxi dem gleichen Konzept wie Mini (1996) folgt, klingt The Wedding Present 2025 deutlich größer. Dies ist wirklich eine Band in ihrer kreativsten Phase, die sowohl die Grenzen ihres eigenen Stils/Sounds als auch die Erwartungen der Zuhörer erweitert, während die Texte auf provokative Weise Bilder zeichnen, wie es nur David Gedge kann. "Wie ich in meinen Sleeve Notes zu 40 gesagt habe, wurden die Songs, die wir für Maxi aufgenommen haben, relativ schnell geschrieben, weil ich mich besonders inspiriert fühlte, sowohl textlich - durch Situationen in meinem Leben - als auch musikalisch - durch das Schreiben mit der damals neu hinzugekommenen Rachael. Die iranisch-amerikanische Singer-Songwriterin Rahill veröffentlicht ihr Solo-Debüt Album ‘Flowers At Your Feet' auf Big Dada, ihrer neuen Label-Heimat. Das Album, auf dem 14 Tracks zu hören sein werden, enthält Kollaborationen mit Beck und Jasper Marsalis (Slauson Malone). Es folgt auf Rahills nostalgische 2022er Cover-EP, „Sun Songs“, und zeigt, wie sie sich auf eine Reise der Selbstakzeptanz und Selbstliebe begibt. Das Projekt greift auf Elemente von Triphop, Jazz und Alternative Rock zurück, untermauert von Rahills ehrfürchtiger und nachdenklicher Lyrik. Das Album wurde während des Lockdowns in mehreren Phasen aufgenommen und entstand in enger Zusammenarbeit zwischen Rahill und dem Produzenten Alex Epton (FKA Twigs, Arca), der sofort die Kraft und das Potenzial von Rahills vorhandenen Solokompositionen erkannte, von denen sie einige bereits Jahre zuvor geschrieben hatte. Rahill Jamalifard ist eine multidisziplinäre Künstlerin und Musikerin, die aus Lansing, Michigan, stammt und derzeit im Hudson Valley im Bundesstaat New York lebt. Als Gründungsmitglied der Brooklyner Garage-Rock-Band Habibi erspielte sich Rahill den Ruf, eine eklektische Bandbreite an Einflüssen zu verarbeiten und sie in fesselnde und gewichtige Popsongs zu destillieren, die sich an den Modi und Melodien des iranisch-amerikanischen Haushalts orientieren, in dem sie aufgewachsen ist - ein Erbe, das sie durch wiederholte Reisen in den Iran weiter pflegt.

The collaborations between Chet Baker and Art Pepper were originally issued in such a disparity of ways that it might seem difficult at first to think about them as a coherent body of work. Their first session, for instance, was originally segmented in a variety of compilation albums, one tune each, and many times the selections were even abridged, suppressing a solo here or there.

Along with another equally splendid session, it was included in Baker and Pepper's most famous album together, Playboys, which was also released under the title picture of heath. At the time, both Baker and Pepper were at their peaks, which is to say that each was playing as much or more on his instrument than anyone in jazz.

Dr Strange was one of the alias of Erick ‘ADN’ Ckrystall’ circa mid-90’s till early 2000’s, when he was producing a sort of Leftfield-Trippy-Goa music, including a lot of Ambient stuff mostly released on CD on a series called Animorph. Everything had a very cinematographic touch like it was made for some documentaries about amphibians and snakes that would evoluate in the deepness of the jungle or on some exotic island...

The music was so magical, that the envie to do a mini-retrospective of the CD series came instantly, specially because none of those golden gems had never been printed on vinyl, It was also a good way to put into the light the Dr. Strange side of ADN’ Ckrystall which was kept in the shadow since many years and that deserves much more attention as the regain of interest for the goa scene has been rising in the last few years.

With Love and Squalor ist das Major-Label-Debüt der Rockband We Are Scientists. Das Album erschien im Oktober 2005 bei Virgin Records in Großbritannien und erreichte Platz 43 der Charts. Der Titel ist inspiriert von der Kurzgeschichte For Esmé – with Love and Squalor von J.D. Salinger, ursprünglich erschienen im New Yorker und später in der Sammlung Nine Stories.
