Bambara, eine außergewöhnliche, zur Nacht neigende, modernistische Rockband, die von der Southern Gothic durchdrungen ist, hat ihre makabre Vision mit ihrem fünften Album „Birthmarks“ zur Perfektion weiterentwickelt. In Zusammenarbeit mit Co-Produzent Graham Sutton von den britischen Experimental-Pionieren Bark Psychosis (einem Mann, der auch maßgeblich für die bahnbrechenden Platten von These New Puritans verantwortlich ist) entstanden, handelt es sich weniger um ein Konzeptalbum als vielmehr um ein erstaunlich komplexes Werk der Erzählkunst, das unvergessliche Charaktere enthält, darunter die bereits erwähnte C&W-Karaoke-Bar-Sirene mit Heiligenschein-Haar und einem einäugigen Mörder, der um den elektrischen Stuhl bettelt – alles nicht gerade vertonte Musik, sondern tatsächlich daraus entstanden.

,Siamo tutti in pericolo" ist das dritte Album von Golem Mecanique, dem Pseudonym der französischen Multiinstrumentalistin und Komponistin Karen Jebane, das auf Ideologic Organ veröffentlicht wird. Jebane arbeitet am Rande des zeitgenössischen Folk (aka La Novea Community), des mikrotonalen Sounds und der frühen Moderne, berührt aber auch die Asche und die Fasern des Back Metal und die DNA der Gothic-Musik, der Literatur, der Zauberei und vor allem der Poesie. Jebanes Arbeit mit der Drone Box (einer mechanisierten Drehleier) und der Zither als glatte und wellige Oberfläche für ihren Gesang ist auf fast zeremonielle Weise sofort ersichtlich und lädt in einen Raum von klarer, dunkler Kreativität und Schönheit ein. Auf ,Siamo tutti in pericolo" arbeitet Jebane mit ihren Kompositionsformen auf neue Art und Weise, poetisch und sparsam in der Ausführung ihrer Techniken, durch ihre Hommage/Hymnen/Meditationen über die höchst unregelmäßigen Umstände und Fragen/Mysterien des Vergehens der Seele von Meisterkünstler Pier Paolo Pasolini. Singing black-lit liturgies of bog bodies caked in mud, entranced by nocturnal landscapes flickering in the moonglow and powered by queer enchantment, Tristwch y Fenywod are a Welsh-language gothic avant-rock powercoven. Exhumed from the depths of Leeds’
experimental underground, the trio consist of Gwretsien Ferch Lisbeth (Guttersnipe, The Ephemeron Loop), Leila Lygad (Hawthonn) and Sidni Sarffwraig (Slaylor Moon, The Courtneys).
Stark, striking and bewitching, Tristwch y Fenywod’s self-titled album is their debut studio recording, following just 10 gigs and a live demo. Formed in 2022, Tristwch y Fenywod ("The Sadness of Women”) record exclusively in the Welsh language, conjuring an eldritch, subterranean, alien folk music played on dual zither, electronic drums and bass guitar. With towering, siren-like vocals curling around the Welsh consonants, accompanied by stark, martial rhythms and swirling claw-plucked strings, Tristwch y Fenywod feels like an early 4AD recording dredged from the waters of an Anglesey swamp. The effect is simultaneously chilling and stirring.
The eight tracks on the record constitute what feels like a recently rediscovered, unholy grail of edgy, atmospheric, occult feminist goth emissions. Gwretsien’s dual-zither playing scatters melodic fragments and spirals of harmony around the decimated space opened up by the lugubrious bass playing and pounding, brooding drum pads.
Coupled with the Welsh vocal, Tristwch y Fenywod embody a new, unique Celtic darkwave sound, equal part Pornography-era The Cure, Svitlana Nianio’s haunted hammered string-work and the dark beauty of Dead Can Dance or This Mortal Coil. Opener Blodyn Gwyrdd feels like the last ride of Princess Ukok, with lumbering bass and 6/8 rhythms in procession to the event horizon with an entreating, impassioned vocal and surprising lyrical theme. The doomed dancing of the zither provides the mysterious melodic bedrock throughout the album, particularly on Ferch Gyda’r Llygaid Du’s heavy funereal swa and the slowly building, paroxysmal banshee breakdown of Awen: an astonishing swell of thrilling chaos.

Das aufstrebende "Death Pop"-Trio Corlyx wird sein bisher ambitioniertestes Projekt veröffentlichen: Purple Pain. Das Doppelalbum, das am 14. Februar 2025 via Out Of Line Music erscheint, ist eine tiefgreifende, 19 Tracks umfassende Erkundung von allem, was die Band an der dunklen Seite der Musik liebt. Mit Einflüssen, die von 80er Jahre Synthpop und Post-Punk bis hin zu Darkwave und Alt-Rock reichen, ist Purple Pain ein spannendes Mosaik des Goth Genres. Ursprünglich aus Los Angeles stammend, leben Corlyx heute zwischen Großbritannien und Italien und bestehen aus der Singer-Songwriterin Caitlin Stokes, dem Gitarristen/Produzenten Brandon Ashley und dem Bassisten Davide Rocco. "Flowerdust" is a very classic gothic rock album with all its gothic rock attributes, yet with
a very dynamic sound. Catherines Cathedral managed to combine very aggressive rock
(hardcore punk almost) hand in hand with piano and acoustic guitar ballads. Because of the
sometimes massive use of keyboards there is also a New Age feel and the urge to make
intelligent and thoughtful music, almost poetry is ever present.
Catherines Cathedral was formed by M. Valley, S. Morgana and D. Hansevi in 1992 with the
plan to play gothic rock. They almost immediately recorded what would later become
"Flowerdust", the album that Preachers Cath Records would release in 1993 and then again
digitally in 2015. The album impressed many others and they moved to House Of Kicks
Records and Noxious Records.

A string of well-received digital singles and a cassette EP for Slumberland followed, dazzling savvy pop fans with their Paisley Underground-inflected jangle that owes as much to the Flying Nun sound as it does to 80s Athens, GA.

sich so in atmosphärischem Progressive Metal und melancholischen, sehr persönlichen Texten. PINHEAD – schon der Name lässt Raum für
Interpretationen und Phantasie. Die bekannte Filmfigur aus „Hellraiser“ gilt für manche als Inkarnation des Bösen, anderen erscheint sie als
Heilsbringer. Für Lappin wurde sie zur Identifikationsfigur bei der Realisierung seiner musikalischen Ideen, vor allem aber bei der gnadenlosen
Auseinandersetzung mit dem schönen und schrecklichen Prozess der menschlichen Individuation – insbesondere seiner eigenen. Ein Sinnbild. Für die Aufspaltung des Selbst, welches vor den Schaudergottheiten bestehen muss. Für das Wettrennen mit dem eigenen Schatten um den ersehnten
Seelenfrieden. Diese Dissonanz prägt das Debutalbum „Egomessiah“. Es besteht eben nicht nur aus dämonischen Schreien und Growls, aggressiven
und treibenden Metalriffs, sondern auch aus sanften, eingängigen Melodien und klaren, hingebungsvollen Gesängen. Akustische Klangwelten,
umwoben von Synth-Elementen, die einen mellow Gothic Vibe erzeugen, machen jedes Stück unvorhersehbar. Es entsteht ein experimentelles
Wechselspiel zwischen den Genres. Die Kompositionen stecken voller Harmonien, Symbiosen und durchlaufen komplexe, aber am Ende doch
nachvollziehbare sich auflösende Entwicklungen.

Early James’ 2024 erschienenes Album „Medium Raw“, das von Dan Auerbach produziert und in Buddy
Jacksons Honky Château aufgenommen wurde, gilt als sein bisher überzeugendstes Werk. Die Zusammenarbeit mit Auerbach verleiht dem Album eine düstere Authentizität, die Early James’ gefühlvolles Erzählen
und seine kraftvolle Stimme einfängt. Die Produktion beinhaltet einen Field-Recording-Ansatz, der dem
Album ein organisches, lebendiges Gefühl verleiht, das seine emotionale Tiefe noch verstärkt. Medium

Worte sind wichtig. Geschichte ist wichtig. Menschen sind wichtig. Und BIG SPECIAL sind wichtig.

Ein Duo, das lauter ist als Bomben, BIG SPECIAL schreiben über Verzweiflung und Kampf, über ein Großbritannien im Niedergang, darüber, wie man in seinen dunkelsten Momenten Stolz findet, darüber, dass der wahre Klassenkrieg im Vereinigten Königreich immer nach unten geht. The Last Wave (also known as Black Rain in the US) was the final chapter in a trilogy of films scripted and directed by the leading auteur of the Australian New Wave, Peter Weir. Beginning in 1974 with the absurdist black comedy-horror The Cars That Ate Paris, and followed a year later by the lush gothic mystery Picnic At Hanging Rock, The Last Wave was a landmark in existential horror. Sitting alongside other Australian eco-terror films (e.g. Long Weekend) the film featured a haunting electronic soundtrack that is as mysterious and beguiling as the spiritual themes of the film itself. With no LP issued after the films premiere in 1977, and together with the mystery surrounding the true identity of its enigmatic composer 'Charles Wain', the score is a largely unheard recording of pioneering experimental film electronics, easily compared to the music that contemporaries Klaus Schulze and Tangerine Dream were composing for Australian films during the same period or the electronic soundtracks of John Carpenter. Tense atonal electronics, synthesizer drones and manipulated Didjeridu all perfectly capture the film's ominous atmosphere, punctuating the slow hypnotic pace of this brooding supernatural thriller.

The mood is dark to melancholic, but also majestic and epic. Hailing from Rome, THE FORESHADOWING are something like the musical equivalent of the city they come from. Founded in 2005, the group can look back on a successful and eventful history. Listeners of gothic, doom and dark metal are very familiar with the quartet's work. THE FORESHADOWING gained popularity in the international scene with four acclaimed albums released between 2007 and 2016: "Days of Nothing" (2007), "Oionos" (2010), "Second World" (2012) and "Seven Heads, Ten Horns" (2016). In 2023, THE FORESHADOWING ended a forced break of several years with the EP "Forsaken Songs" and a European tour with Saturnus and In The Woods. Now, "New Wave Order" is the group's fifth full length album and their debut on LIFEFORCE RECORDS. The formation from Rome emphasizes its strengths on the album and offers cinematic tracks of dark music that is nevertheless immensely catchy and mood-enhancing. While listening to "New Wave Order", you are whisked away into a world full of secrets and allusions. The path is THE FORESHADOWING's goal, which manifests itself in all-encompassing, organically developed musicality. The Italians are outstanding songwriters who create captivating arcs of suspense and also keep an eye on the overarching strands. Nothing else can be expected from this eternal band.

Robin Carolan's latest soundtrack for Robert Eggers' highly anticipated Nosferatu is a haunting, gothic-infused and meticulously crafted work that draws from a vast palette of sounds, instruments, and inspirations. Following their successful collaboration on The Northman, Carolan reunites with Eggers to bring the legendary tale of Nosferatu to life, infusing the film with a score that is as complex and nuanced as the story itself. With Daniel Pioro, one of Britain's most exciting young classical musicians, at the helm as the orchestra leader and first chair for a vast majority of the recording, the soundtrack features a vast orchestration, including 60 string players, a full choir, various horns and woodwinds, a harpist, and two percussionists. Despite the grandeur of the orchestration, one of the most challenging pieces was the music box used at the film's beginning. Carolan and Eggers struggled to perfect its sound, a process marked by their meticulous attention to detail, which Carolan describes as almost telepathic. Set in the 1800s, Nosferatu allowed Carolan to incorporate contemporary instrumentation, though he made a deliberate effort to ensure the score didn't sound overly modern. Letty Stott, who also worked on The Northman, contributed ancient horns and pipes, enhancing the soundtrack's eerie atmosphere. Additionally, percussionist Paul Clarvis custom-built a toaca-like instrument for added authenticity. Carolan's inspirations for the soundtrack were as eclectic as they were profound. He frequently drew upon the works of Bartok and Coil, while films like The Innocents, Angels and Insects, and Eyes Wide Shut provided cinematic inspiration. Additionally, he explored the more obscure side of Hammer Horror soundtracks and found a deep connection to the music of the Ukrainian film The Eve of Ivan Kupalo, which helped shape the score's otherworldly tone. Carolan intentionally moved beyond the typical horror score, focusing on capturing the tale's melancholy and tragic elements while weaving in a sense of warped romanticism. The result is a soundtrack that not only complements the film but also stands on its own as a testament to Carolan's artistry and the enduring power of collaboration.
