High Focus Records is delighted to announce the return of Verbz & Mr Slipz on ‘THE WAY FWD’, the anticipated full-length follow up to their 2019 LP ‘Radio Waves’.

An album fuelled by evolution, ‘THE WAY FWD’ pays respect to the signature sonics that are synonymous with the duo; the dust laden, sample driven boom bap energies are present throughout, with a greater focus on arrangement, form and musicality this time around.

Sourcing from the many adventures both Verbz & Slipz have been on in the five years separating the 2 x LPs; experiments across genres and BPMs informing the direction of travel before they completed the circle, ‘THE WAY FWD’ combines new spirit with a dizzying timelessness; Slipz’ sophisticated brushstrokes informing Verbz’ penmanship across 12-tracks of true introspection.

Im Eröffnungstrack von Unlearning Vol. 2, seinem fünften Soloalbum, bricht Evidence zunächst mit Mustern. "Set the autopilot, cruising speed", sagt er - eine Zeile, die an seinen charakteristischen entspannten Flow erinnert. Aber anstatt zu cruisen, wählt der aus Venice stammende Musiker die Störung. "That's a setup for a punch to land with 'true indeed'," fährt er fort und gibt den Ton für ein Album vor, bei dem es weniger um Bequemlichkeit und mehr um Transformation geht. Der Titel des Tracks "Plans Change" könnte nicht passender gewählt sein. Seit seinem Auftauchen mit Dilated Peoples hat Evidence immer eine kühle, mühelose Kontrolle ausgestrahlt. Aber "Unlearning Vol. 2" lehnt wie sein Vorgänger aus dem Jahr 2021 jedes Abgleiten in den Status eines Vermächtnisses ab. Es ist nicht nur ein stilistischer Schwenk, sondern eine tiefere, introspektivere Reise, die in technischer Meisterschaft wurzelt, aber von Instinkt und Neugier angetrieben wird. Anstatt vergangene Erfolge zu recyceln, erkundet Evidence raueres, emotionales Terrain und kreiert einen Sound, der sowohl geerdet als auch experimentell ist. Die Produktion zieht Tracks wie Sebb Bashs erschütterndes "Seeing Double", C-Lances nostalgisches "Top Seeded" und Evidence' eigenes unheimliches "Greatest Motivation" in einen hypnotischen Bann. Dennoch bleibt seine Stimme der Anker, der den Dunst mit Präzision und Tiefe durchschneidet. Tracks wie "Nothing's Perfect" zeigen seine lyrische Beweglichkeit, während "Laughing Last" Stoizismus und Verletzlichkeit in Reflexionen über Familie und Verlust verbindet. Die Kollaborateure stammen aus verschiedenen Epochen - The Alchemist, DJ Babu, Blu, Domo Genesis, Larry June, Conductor Williams und viele mehr -, doch das Projekt wird von einem gemeinsamen Ethos getragen: sich neu zu erfinden, einen neuen Kontext zu schaffen und Schmerz durch Kreativität einem Zweck zuzuführen.

Der norwegische Saxophonist Bendik Giske steht an der Schwelle zu seinem dritten Soloalbum und kennt sich selbst gut. Mit seinem neuen, selbstbetitelten Album befindet er sich in seiner Blütezeit als Künstler: selbstbewusst in Bezug auf seine Stimme und seine Fähigkeiten, beflügelt von Kritikerlob aus allen Ecken - einschließlich zweier norwegischer Grammy-Nominierungen - und einer Welle von Zuhörern überall. Mit der Wahl von Beatrice Dillon als Produzentin des Albums - die britische Elektronikmusikerin ist eindeutig eine Weggefährtin in der Praxis des originellen ästhetischen Ausdrucks - ist ihr Einfluss unmittelbar und deutlich spürbar. Es ist konfrontativ, verlangt mehr Aufmerksamkeit, aber durch seine Körperlichkeit - man kann seinen Körper in der Musik hören und fühlen - versetzt es einen in einen Flow-Zustand, irgendwo zwischen Ekstase, Hochgefühl und spirituellem Erwachen. Es ist sehr menschlich, aber es gibt auch eine starke Spannung - die es immer geben wird, wenn man um Existenz und Gültigkeit kämpft - elegant illustriert durch Florian Hetz' eindrucksvolle Fotografien des Künstlers zu der Veröffentlichung. Zum Teil ist Giske von Judith Halberstams The Queer Art of Failure inspiriert. So sehr er auch von seiner Ausbildung und Teilnahme am Umfeld des Jazz-Konservatoriums profitiert hat, führte ihn sein Weg doch weit über dessen Grenzen hinaus. Die Arbeit an diesen neuen Erkundungen mit seinem Instrument war ein zehnjähriger Prozess, in dem er das, von dem er wusste, dass es letztlich nicht passte, abstreifte und das klangliche Territorium seiner gelebten Erfahrung fand. Daraus entstanden Systeme, die Studien von Tempo und Proportionen ermöglichten, ein Ausgangspunkt für einen immersiven improvisatorischen Ansatz, der jahrelange musikalische Erkundungen abbildet. Es ist der Klang von sozialer Emanzipation durch den meditativen Puls und die Geschwindigkeit der Zirkularatmung und den Tanz des Körpers, insbesondere der Finger, der Zunge und der Lippen. Giske weiß, dass Musik ein mächtiges Werkzeug sein kann, um Menschen zusammenzubringen und Ideen zu finden, und die Langlebigkeit seines Projekts ist vor allem ein Aufruf zu Fürsorge, Zusammengehörigkeit, Geschichtenerzählen und der Fähigkeit, sich für eine gemeinsame Sache zu versammeln. In aller Ernsthaftigkeit ist BendikGiske ein Vorschlag für Wahrhaftigkeit und Existenz, ein Raum für jemanden, der sein tiefstes Selbst ausdrücken kann.

It's spring of 2023 in the North Carolina Piedmont, and songwriter and singer M.C. Taylor - leader of the band Hiss Golden Messenger - is feeling alive. Joyful. Eternal, he might say. For the Grammy-nominated musician, whose albums have traced an internal path through adulthood, fatherhood, spirituality, and depression for well over a decade, this is something new. "The tunes on Jump for Joy were composed in free moments throughout 2022, a year during which Hiss was on the road more or less constantly," explains Taylor. "And perhaps because the post-pandemic energy out in the world felt so chaotic and uncertain, I found myself thinking a lot about the role that music has played in my life and how exactly I ended up in the rarefied position of leading a band and crew all over the globe through dingy graffiti-scrawled green rooms, venerated music halls, dust-blown roadside motels.

Sometimes playing in front of 5,000; sometimes 200. Sleeping sitting up. Laughing until my stomach hurts. Not being able to fall asleep at 3 a.m. in some anonymous bed because my mind is spinning with anxiety or depression or adrenaline, or because my ears are still ringing. Robbing Peter to pay Paul, then robbing Paul to pay Peter back. Over and over again. It's an outlaw life but one, I'm coming to realize, that makes me happy." The songs that make up Jump for Joy - the sharpest and most autobiographical that Taylor has written under the Hiss name - read as a sort of epistolary, postcards between the present-day songwriter and his alias Michael Crow, a teenaged dreamer very much like Taylor himself, who trips his way through the 14 tunes that make up the record. In this way, Jump for Joy is a meditation on a life lived with art, and the ways that our hopes and dreams and decisions bump up against_ and, with a little bit of luck, occasionally merge with real life. "Creating this character became the way that I could explore these vulnerable, tender moments that were so decisive in my life, even if I didn't know it at the time," explains Taylor.

Produced by Taylor and engineered by longtime Hiss compatriot Scott Hirsch over two weeks in the late fall of 2022 at the fabled Sonic Ranch studio in Tornillo, TX, just a short walk from the Mexican border, Jump for Joy dances with joyful, spontaneous energy that feels like a fresh chapter in the Hiss Golden Messenger oeuvre. Taylor is accompanied throughout the album by his crack live band: guitarist Chris Boerner, bassist Alex Bingham, keyboardist Sam Fribush, and drummer Nick Falk, a collection of musicians that have helped make Hiss Golden Messenger's live performances legendary affairs
