The Maytones' album “Madness”, originally released in 1976 on Burning Sounds Records, is a cornerstone of roots reggae. The Jamaican vocal duo, Vernon Buckley and Gladstone Grant, deliver soulful harmonies and socially conscious lyrics throughout the album. Produced by Alvin Ranglin, the album features ten tracks that blend themes of love, spirituality, and social commentary.

Butch’s unmistakable music has always worn the influence of disco proudly on its sleeve. Both his mega-hit No Worries and his first contribution to the Running Back catalogue, Desire, are essentially modern-day disco records. The same goes for his return to the label with Glory Night—perhaps even more so, thanks to its vintage engineering and authentic aural treatment. Equipped with the genre’s signature sounds and arranged like a lost disco edit from the late ’70s, Butch applies the lotions and potions that today’s dancers demand, creating one of those peak-time sensations that make him unique—complete with confetti, a firecracker breakdown on top, and an extra rhythm section bonus tool included. Just Chill and Just Fly continue that narrative. While the first appeals to fans of R&B or funk samples (though no recordings were harmed in the process), it is catchy as hell and creates an inescapable maelstrom. The second, meanwhile, draws on the principles of deep house and exercises itself in contemplation. Be that as it may, here are a couple of tracks that work on almost any floor and at any time. Return Of The Funky Man is the second album by New York legend Lord Finesse. Originally released in 1992, this album was highly anticipated after his debut on the scene just a few years prior. The title of Tom Skinner"s first release (2022) under his own name is a reference to cellist Abdul Wadud"s ultra-rare 1978 solo album By Myself, which Skinner listened to repeatedly during lockdown. Wadud"s album was privately pressed on his own label, Bisharra, and whilst Skinner"s title uses the more conventional spelling of this common Arabic name, they both have the same intention or meaning: it translates as "good news", or "the bringer of good news". The result is a tight, hypnotic and unique 31-minutes of music. Voices of Bishara is sculpted around timeless and deeply emotional music that contains masses of movement and exceptional harmonic depth and texture. It sweeps and soars through soundworlds, rich in musicality and always anchored by the deep doubling of cello and bass. It also, of course, contains Skinner"s percussive magic.

The Fire That’s Tearing Through Our Home has been recorded at Evolution Recording Studios in their Oxford hometown, produced by Willie J. Kanadia have recently treated audiences to songs from the forthcoming album live on their recent UK tour with Black Foxxes. Gregg Deal, the acclaimed visual and performance artist behind his new project Dead Pioneers, is making a claim that Indigenous Americans were the first real punks. Deal suggests that the overarching theme of the album is "an introduction to the band itself". Created with a DIY disposition and the "love of a scene that saves lives", they reel off a roll call of marginalised groups and protected characteristics: "Indigenous rights, Black rights, Brown rights, Asian rights, Gay rights, Trans rights, Workers rights and beyond_". This is central to their identity and focus, saying that "with a North American Indigenous person as the vocalist, being unapologetically upfront on the social, political and cultural side of things doesn't seem necessary, but paramount to the overall tone of the band." This self-titled debut, coming in at a lithe 22 minutes with only one of the twelve tracks exceeding three minutes, is almost over before it begins, but covers a huge amount of ground in that time. Blistering opener 'Tired' sets out their stall; as with the whole album, it is passionate, but never preaching. Capitalised 'Political Music' can be hard to land without coming across as hectoring or earnest, but Deal's literary, humorous lyrics effortlessly cut through complex issues of marginalisation and colonialism.
