Serge Chaloff - Blue Serge
Als einer der ersten Baritonsaxofonisten des Bebop verblüffte Serge Chaloff, (1923-1957) die Jazzwelt mit seiner bemerkenswerten Fingerfertigkeit und seinem zutiefst emotionalen Spiel. Da er jedoch nur sieben Alben unter seinem Namen aufnahm und bereits mit 33 Jahren verrstarb, ist er weitgehend in Vergessenheit geraten. “Blue Serge” von 1956 ist laut Penguin Guide To Jazz sein bestes Album: “Chaloffs Meisterwerk ist kraftvoll und bewegend zugleich, nicht weil man weiß, dass er dem Tod so nahe war, sondern wegen der unsentimentalen Stringenz seines Spiels.

Andrew Hill - Andrew!!!
Der Pianist und Komponist Andrew Hill stürmte die Jazzszene mit einem Ausbruch an Kreativität. In nur acht Monaten, zwischen November 1963 und Juni 1964, nahm er für Blue Note fünf bemerkenswerte Alben in unterschiedlichen Besetzungen (vom Trio bis zum Sextett) und mit durchweg eigenen Kompositionen auf. Das letzte dieser Alben war “Andrew!!!”, über das AllMusic schrieb: “Die Musik hat oft eine schwebende, hypnotische Qualität, die Hills Dissonanzen, ungewöhnliche Voicings und komplexe Arrangements noch fesselnder macht als sonst.”

Recorded in Hollywood, California between two sessions in December 1956 and January 1957, Art Pepper’s Modern Art for the Intro label featured his melodic alto saxophone flights atop cool jazz, bebop, and blues in the company of a quartet with Russ Freeman on piano, Ben Tucker on bass, and Chuck Flores on drums. A little-known tenor saxophonist deserving of wider recognition, Teddy Edwards made two Pacific Jazz albums including 1960’s Sunset Eyes, which was a showcase for his rich, powerful sound and featured a cast of musicians including pianist Joe Castro, bassist Leroy Vinnegar, drummer Billy Higgins, and others. Recorded in 1967, Hank Mobley’s Third Season was a typically high-calibre hard bop outing by the tenor saxophonist with a 7-piece band featuring alto saxophonist James Spaulding, trumpeter Lee Morgan, guitarist Sonny Greenwich, pianist Cedar Walton, bassist Walter Booker and drummer Billy Higgins.

Bristol-based singer, songwriter and bandleader, who has powered her way to the-forefront of the British blues and roots scene in recent years, releases 'Shining In The Half Light on "Tidal Wave Splatter" colored vinyl. Crammed with vibrant originals brought to life with her A-list touring band, 'Shining in the Half Light' is Bailey's first full length album recorded in the UK & feature's Joe Wilkins on Guitar, Jonny Henderson on Ivories, Matthew Waer on Bass duties and Matthew Jones on drums. It was recorded in deepest Devon in December 2020 at Middle Farm Studios and produced by Dan Weller. An exciting team of co-writers feature with three credits for Ashton Tucker & Will Edmunds, who both wrote with Elles for 'Road I Call Home', plus she teamed up with longtime guitarist Joe Wilkins to write the slow-flowing, philosophical 'Riding Out The Storm'. Other kindred spirits include guitar maestro Martin Harley, for the gentle and romantic 'Different Kind Of Love' and Matt Owens, co-founder of the hugely successful indie-folk outfit Noah and the Whale, on the aforementioned 'Sunshine City'. The album comes to a striking conclusion with its title track, co-written with Nashville's Craig Lackey, written over Zoom in May 2020.

In the course of our deep research, we sometimes discover a hidden thread that unites musicians, songwriters, artists, and poets linked by music. Mustafa's 'Polygamy' is no exception. Apart from the music - the main reason we decided to work on this first ever re-press, a jewel at the crossroads between jazz funk, spiritual jazz and proto rap - are the many other things that make Mustafa an intriguing and fascinating character. For starters, he was a childhood friend of the Ayler brothers with whom he played in different formations. He also played with other beloved figures such as Noah Howard and Charles Tyler, on a still unreleased album recorded for Amiri Baraka's Jihad label, and worked with The Legendary Master Brotherhood and Steve Reid. The Houston, Texas founded band featuring Stix Hooper, Joe Sample, Wayne Henderson, Wilton Felder, and Jimmy Bond blended jazz aspirations with R&B roots to create an enticing sound. Andrew Hill’s 1968 album Grass Roots stands as one of the most immediately accessible albums in the pianist’s beguiling Blue Note discography. Hank Mobley was inspired by Birth of the Cool on his 1966 album A Slice of the Topfeaturing Duke Pearson’s arrangements for an octet that added euphonium and tuba to a group with James Spaulding on alto sax, Lee Morgan on trumpet, McCoy Tyner on piano, Bob Cranshaw on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums. 1965’s Dialogue was the debut by vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson who had already proven himself a versatile sideman on albums from Idle Moments to Out To Lunch. Dialogue showcased his more adventurous leanings with a sextet featuring Freddie Hubbard, Sam Rivers, Andrew Hill, Richard Davis & Joe Chambers. Trumpeter Booker Little made only a few albums during his tragically short life including his astounding debut Booker Little 4 & Max Roach recorded in 1958 for United Artists. Little came to prominence in Max Roach’s band and the drummer joins him here along with George Coleman, Tommy Flanagan, and Art Davis. Auf seinem Album ”Let Freedom Ring” spiegelt Saxofonist Jackie McLean den Wandel wider, der 1962 in
der Luft lag: die musikalischen Freiheiten der aufkommenden Avantgarde und die sozialen Veränderungen,
die von der Bürgerrechtsbewegung gefordert wurden. Begleitet wird er von Walter Davis Jr. am Klavier,
Herbie Lewis am Bass und Billy Higgins am Schlagzeug.

Als Lee Morgan 1968 “Taru” einspielte, befand sich der Trompeter musikalisch gerade an einem Scheideweg. Reflektiert wird das in der Vielzahl von Stilen, mit denen er sich auf dem Album auseinandersetzt: das Spektrum reicht von modalem Jazz und Post-Bop bis hin zu wunderschönen Balladen und funkigen

Auf dem Album “Medina” setzte Vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson 1969 die ungemein inspirierende Zusammenarbeit mit Tenorsaxofonist Harold Land fort, die er ein Jahr zuvor auf “Total Eclipse” begonnen hatte. Hutcherson und den exzellenten Musikern seines Quintetts gelingt es hier, die im modalen Post-Bop verwurzelten und recht anspruchsvollen Originalkompositionen erstaunlich beseelt klingen zu lassen.
