Rocksteady - The Roots Of Reggae

Brand New 2017 Edition - finally available again on this CD and alternatively on 2LP Vinyl for the First time (moll16lp). The legendary movie soundstrack based out of Kingston, Jamaica in April 2008, telling the story of the original vocalists and musicians involved. The sixteenth release on the Moll-Selekta label shares its title with a wonderful film, a heartwarming homage to the golden age of rocksteady. It documents the recordings being made for this very album at the Tuff Gong studios, Kingston, Jamaica in April 2008, telling the story of the original vocalists and musicians involved. Excerpts from an all star reunion concert staged in Kingston and older archive material complete the picture. Never before in the history of Jamaica, which already occupies a unique place on the world map of song, its sound embraced by western popular music, has such an illustrious collection of singers and players been assembled. The album showcases 15 rocksteady classics in sparkling, deeply inspired new versions, recorded in the studio which also played host to album sessions of a certain Bob Marley. Under the musical direction of Ernest Ranglin, a guitarist of considerable renown not only on the reggae circuit, but also on the jazz scene, mixed by legendary engineer Errol Brown - in Duke Reid's employ at the Treasure Isle studio in the sixties - and freshly arranged by Lynn Taitt.

Aquarius Sounds - Dubbing At Aquarius Studios 1977-1979

Record Producer/ DJ / Record Plugger and Record Shop Owner Herman Chin-Lay operated out of his Aquarius Record shop at Half Way Three ,Kingston ,Jamaica.
It is from this base that he started his recording studio where he not only put out the first ever Dub album 'Aquarius Dub' but was also responsible for naming future artist Horace Swaby.
By allowing him to use his exotic fictitious working name 'Augustus Pablo' for his own recording career.
Although called 'Aquarius Dub' the tacks that make up this album were cut at Dynamic Sounds, Harry J's and Randy's Studio 17.
It was not long after this release that Herman opened the first ever twenty four track studio Aquarius Studios.
We have compiled this set of Dub tracks that were worked on at Aquarius studio's itself.
Using the legendary studio for some of the recordings and/or it's mixing and voicing facilites.

One of the sweetest and most idiosyncratic voices in reggae, tenor singer Cornell Campbell also has one of the longest-running careers of any Jamaican recording artist. Taken under Studio One founder Clement 'Sir Coxsone' Dodd's wing at a very young age, Cornell cut his first recordings in 1956, long before ska was even established. He remained based at Studio One for many years (working as a label printer as well as a recording artist), and also voiced sides for King Edwards in the ska years. He then briefly joined the Sensations in rock steady and recorded at Treasure Isle, before moving back to Studio One as leader of the Eternals when reggae arrived, cutting huge hits there such as 'Stars' and 'Queen Of The Mistrel,' and giving early coaching to Slim Smith, Jacob Miller and bassist Robbie Shakespeare. Joining forces with ace producer Bunny 'Striker' Lee in the mid-1970s brought a dramatic new surge in popularity that greatly boosted his profile overseas. The Ropin' LP was issued on Third World's Justice subsidiary in 1980—a sub label set up to handle Striker's product in the UK (though hits like 'Mash You Down' and the title track had been handled in Jamaica by Joe Gibbs). One of the album's outstanding moments is 'Bandulu,' an anti-rude boy epic voiced on the 'Late Night Blues' rhythm, while opening cover, 'Just My Imagination,' has an uncredited toasting portion from Errol Scorcher.

Homeys Records new release, Something new', features the first collaboration between Marina P and the upcoming french producer KSD. Once the original track was completed, the vocals were given to three other producers close to the italian singer for remixing. Stand High Patrol's version offers a jazzy take on the track with unexpected footwork influences. TWM, for his very first release, presents a steppers version made for the soundsystem. Homeys brings a roots reggae touch with a flute part that leads the theme. These producers' three different remixes perfectly represent the musical universe of Marina P.

REPRESSED 2x12" now with bonus download code! Heavy, heavy tunes! Studio One instrumentals are the foundation of Reggae. These rhythm tracks became the basis for all Dancehall as countless artists and producers re-versioned these classic Studio One instrumentals.

REVIEWS: "Sheer volume of output from Studio One is astonishing, combined with the fact that the quality of the recordings never seem to diminish. These instrumentals touch on ska, rocksteady, dub, and begin to hint at the reggae sound of the late '70s. Each instrumental is perfect and has the feel that it could hardly be improved upon. Soul Jazz has once again put together a wonderfully rounded collection of music from Studio One" - All Music.

"I think if a nuclear family could have a soundtrack, ours would be the Soul Jazz comp Studio One: Scorcher. I wouldn't say it's the best record ever made, but if I heard it every single day for the rest of my life, I'd be 100% cool with it." DJ. & "Compilation of essential & rare Studio One instrumentals" - Hard Wax.

"Studio One Scorcher is the latest of these, collecting instrumental tracks spanning the years from the late 60's rocksteady vogue through the onset of dancehall and digital rhythms in the early 80's featuring The Skatalites, trombonist Don Drummond, Pablove Black and others." - Billboard.

Vinyl Junkie & Sanxion Feat. Bushman - Talk To Much

Fresh from their remix of Jinx' "Car Full Of Herbs", Bristol/London Bass specialists Vinyl Junkie & Sanxion return to Asbo Records alongside legendary Reggae singer Bushman with "Talk Too Much". Things get busy from the start on the original DnB version, a tightly packed and weighty amen break welcomes in Bushman's thoughtful melodic vocals with dubwise horns and instrumentation recreating that timeless reggae vibe at 170BPM with snatches of bleeps and pads that hint at Vinyl Junkie & Sanxion's oldskool hardcore/jungle history. DJ Westy on the remix fattens things up bringing the bass to the front for a real sound system smasher. The 140 remix retains the main elements of the original with added dirty bass and half time drops perfect for festival season, guaranteed to be a crowd pleaser for fans of breaks reggae and that early rave sound.

Kingston All Stars - Dubwise

Kingston All Stars

Dubwise

12inchRWR002LPLIMITED
Roots & Wire
05.05.2017

The foundation of this dub album was created by some of the finest sessions musicians ever to grace the studios of 1960's & 70's Jamaica. Their instruments were the cornerstone to countless Dub LP's that began to surface in the early 70's and continued on into the 80's creating a whole new genre of music.

As they did back in the early days of dub, the Kingston All Stars gathered together in Kingston, Jamaica at Mixing Lab Studios and laid down a series of riddims that would lay the groundwork for what comes next: the singers. Both Greenwich Farm rasta, Prince Alla, and falsetto, Cedric Myton of the The Congos, contribute vocals to the album but half of the riddims on this LP are, to date, unreleased, and have yet to be voiced.

In essence, this album is a sneak peak into upcoming releases.
The style of riddims that were created during these sessions range from the Cumbia influenced 'Reyes Dub'

to the Ethiopian Jazz flavored ' Kebra Dub ' that pays tribute to the African sound system, Kebra Ethiopia Sound and shows the wide variety of influences that fuel these musicians.

Tracks like ' Dub Ova ' combine Ansel Collins keyboard work with Hux Brown's infectious grooves to create a funky rhythm that you have not heard the last of.

'Clappers " features Sly Dunbar's big drums and another Hux groove creating a classic skanking dub reminiscent of rhythms by The Revolutionaries band.
As with all good Dub albums, the tension and release as instruments are brought in and out of the mix are felt as they much as they are heard. The negative space left by dropping the bass is then filled with a horn line or guitar lick soaked in echo or reverb giving tracks a second life. The album, mixed in Montreal by producer & engineer Mossman, who is no stranger to engineering dub, has become a worldwide collaboration and is a harbinger of big things to come from the Kingston All Stars!
The Kingston All Stars are Sly Dunbar, Ansel Collins, Mikey 'Mao' Chung, Linford 'Hux' Brown, Jackie Jackson, Robbie Lyn, Everton & Everald Gayle. Under the artistic direction of Moss ' Mossman ' Raxlen, a multi-faceted musician, producer, engineer and writer, the KAS will be releasing new recordings as well as performing live shows internationally. These are the musicians and session men who recorded at a variety of Jamaica's legendary studios, and created so many of the classic rhythms from the 1960's and '70's - a countless number which have since become staples in a wide variety of today's musical genres from hip hop to dancehall to dubstep and techno. In various incarnations, members of the group have been part of or recorded with Bob Marley's Wailers Band, Studio One's Sound Dimension and Soul Vendors Band, Lee 'Scratch' Perry's Upsetters, Peter Tosh's Word Sound and Power Band, Toots and the Maytals, Now Generation and many more.
