Rocket Juice & The Moon - Lp

Up and away / To your journey to the sun / Drink your rocket juice / Fly away (Hey, Shooter).
High up in the skies, amongst the clouds, Rocket Juice & The Moon was born. Literally. It happened back in 2008, when Damon Albarn, Flea and Tony Allen convened on the same Lagos flight, to play and exchange musical ideas in that city as part of the Africa Express collective. Relishing a shared enthusiasm for one another's work, and bonding immediately, there and then the triumvirate laid down the blueprint for Rocket Juice.
Still, more than a year passed before conditions were set for three weeks together at Albarn's West London studio, recording and refining two-dozen startlingly out and deeply funky instrumental grooves. The next stage was to invite onboard some extremely talented friends, with further sessions in Dallas, New York, Chicago and Paris... Erykah Badu, no less, queen of contemporary soul. Three companions from Africa Express: Malian singer Fatoumata Diawara, whose debut album has topped World Music charts since its release last Autumn; her multi-talented compatriot Cheick Tidiane Seck, whose prodigious keyboardism has lit up releases by artists ranging from Youssou N'Dour to Hank Jones; the young, Ghanaian rapper M.anifest, quizzically existential, switching seamlessly between Twi and English. And the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, long-time stalwarts in the Honest Jon's set-up — since one of the team discovered them busking near the shop in Portobello Road, on his lunchbreak — with a second album for the label due in May... Finally, the tracks were dispatched for mixing to Berlin, to be meticulously honed, polished and envenomed by Mark Ernestus, one half of the legendary Basic Channel and Rhythm & Sound partnerships.
The result is Rocket Juice & The Moon — out March 26, 2012, on Honest Jon's Records — a triumphant exploration and proliferation of kinetic Afro-funk rhythms: organic, exuberant, communal music-making, evidenced by the project's live debut on stage as part of the Honest Jon's Chop Up in late 2011, which hit London, Marseille, Dublin, and Cork to such great acclaim (witness the flurry of smart-phone film-clips uploaded in the days thereafter).
From the inaugural bars — that absurdly funky slice of instructional timekeeping, 1-2-3-4-5-6 — the liquid pulse of Fela Kuti's classic recordings drives the action through a suite of 18 shape-shifting compositions. The greatest drummer in the world has never sounded so good as he does here. His intricate cross-patterns jostle and lock with Flea's nimble, rumbling bass riffs. Joined by Seck on There and Extinguished — 'when you dispose of something burning, be sure it's out' — Albarn's keyboards spray synth fusillades up top, over, and under... splicing into the mess of wires running between the freaked Afro-disco of William Onyeabor and the space-jazz-moog of Sun Ra. The HBE brings extra intensity and drama to Leave-Taking — likewise Flea's trumpet to Rotary Connection — teasing out the haunting melody coiled in the mix.
Where the best of vintage Afrobeat sides sustained their concentrated energies over the course of sprawling, marathon jams, RJ & TM manages something altogether different: the group bottles the idiom into capsules of funk... and real songs. Beautifully buoyed by Erykah Badu's unmistakable vocals, Hey, Shooter brilliantly traverses metaphysical spaceways sans any semblance of noodling. Lolo and Follow-Fashion — featuring the open-hearted sensuality of Diawara's singing, M.anifest's quick, brawny science, and more brass blasts — play like its musical cousins or codas. Indeed, the album's shrewd sequencing creates the composite effect of tracks working both individually or within the context of an extended song-cycle.
The lovely ballad, Poison, is bittersweet and ruminative: 'If you're looking for love, beware the signs / They will paralyze you one by one / Poison, it will only break your heart.' Down-tempo and dubby, Check Out and Worries amplify the range of styles and moods. And by the time of Fatherless — a chugging Afro blues that evokes John Lee Hooker lost in Lagos, one gets the sneaking suspicion there's very little outside the reach of this collective's inventive musical grasp.
There is, in fact, a palpable openness pervading Rocket Juice & The Moon — the sense of a limber willingness to follow creative impulse — right down to how the group acquired its name. When Ogunajo Ademola — the Lagotian commissioned to do the album's cover artwork — dubbed his submission 'Rocket Juice & The Moon', it quickly morphed into the formal name of the project, like trying to hold onto mercury.
Surely, the stars above also approved.

We love this record; it really puts the Dub in Dubstep. Their first three releases have sold out and this has been doing well on promo which shows there is a real market out there for this style which really goes back to the early beginnings of how Dubstep came about.

Nice Up
15.02.2012

Nice Up's first release of 2012 comes from none other than the legendary Monkey Mafia aka Jon Carter. One of the DJs and producers at the heart of the Big Beat explosion of the mid '90s, Carter's musical history reaches much further back. It is of course his antics at the seminal Heavenly Social alongside fellow residents The Chemical Brothers and Fatboy Slim that Carter is perhaps best known for. Starting his recording career on Wall Of Sound, he soon decamped to Heavenly and started making dancehall influenced beats under the Monkey Mafia name. Remixes soon came flooding in and the project quickly developed into a live band with the album 'Shoot The Boss' providing a blueprint for generations to come, with its heavy dub influences, razor sharp breakbeats and a creative depth to the dance. Despite his bulging global DJ diary, becoming a pub landlord and urban fox hunting, Jon still found time to indulge his love of reggae and dancehall and has recently revived his erstwhile moniker (with many thanks to the Dub Pistols' Barry Ashworth for tempting Jon back into the studio). Featuring longtime collaborator Doug'e Reuben, 'Royal Ascot' is a dark and dirty electro-bashment banger, that has already gained a lot of love from Rob Da Bank, Mary Anne Hobbs and Eddy Temple Morris . With a bouncy reggae rework from Bristol's rising star Mr Benn on the b-side as well as an exclusive acapella and full colour picture sleeve into the bargain, every one is a winner!

Bob Marley - Rastaman Vibration

Rastaman Vibration' is a roots reggae album by Bob Marley & The Wailers released in 1976. It captures the last moments of Marley's tenure as Jamaica's folk hero before he developed into a worldwide superstar. To those with their ear to the ground, he was already a giant, but it wasn't until the following year that those slower off the mark were to latch on to his energy. For the 'Rastaman Vibration' album Marley assembled what many fans believe to be his finest Wailers band. The album was a great success, becoming the first (and only) Bob Marley release to reach the top ten on the Billboard 200 charts, in addition to releasing Marley's most popular US single ("Roots, Rock, Reggae" was the only Bob Marley single to reach the Billboard Hot 100 charts). Among the 10 tracks that make up this record are several bone fide classics; The opening 'Positive Vibration' and 'Crazy Baldhead' .The album closes with two of Bob's most militant recordings; 'War' , with a lyric based on the speech of HIM Haile Selassie, and 'Rat Race', which addresses the degradation of humanity in political schemes. Synthesizers are featured prominently on this album, adding a breezy embellishment to otherwise hard-driving songs with strong elements of rock guitar.

Mungo's Hi Fi Ft. I Bogle & Kenny Knots - Bogle / Gimme Gimme

This dirty bass fatty is Mungo's most pulled-up riddim this year, and one of the most instantly catchy tunes they've ever released . With vocals recorded in Jamaica and Glasgow from undiscovered raw talent I Bogle, and UK veteran Kenny Knots, both sides are pure rotts-bass fire, augmented with extras in the shape a deliciously stripped instrumental riddim version of 'Bogle', and a finely crafted dub for 'Gimme Gimme'.

Da Grynch Ft Macka B, Massicker, Blackout Ja & Askala Selasie - The Gorilla Ep

Necessary Mayhem producer Curtis Lynch aka Da Grynch has come up with another musical masterpiece with a new riddim named The Gorilla, probably the strongest beat the label has unleashed so far, charged with a super heavy bass line and crushing drums. The line-up of artists who have vocalled on The Gorilla reads like the who's-who of the current reggae industry, and a series of 7' plates will be issued following this 12' featuring Tarrus Riley, Franz Job, Ziggi, Omar Perry, Tippa Irie, Cali P, Mr Williamz, and Chucki Starr. For the opening EP, roots star Macka B - known for his MC deejay style - singjays on 'Our Music' with a message to his neighbour explaining why his music is so loud. On the flip, Massicker, Blackout JA & Askala Selasie join forces at the mic on the self-evident proclamation 'Proud To Be Rasta', and both cuts come armed with cone-testing dubs courtesy of Da Grynch. This four-part selection is most certainly made with the conscious-reggae bass-bin massive in mind.

Mungo's Hi Fi Soundsystem - Forward Ever

Mungo's Hi Fi are at the controls delivering their latest productions featuring megatons of talent from a dream lineup of MCs. Mungo's Hi Fi champion the evolution of reggae, dub and dancehall music and are reinvigorating soundsystem culture. They have developed formidable live shows, touring every corner of the globe, but always sounding best when giving their own speakers a workout. They have collaborated with foundation veterans including Ranking Joe, Earl 16 and Sister Nancy as well as frequent shows with Kenny Knots, Solo Banton, Mr Williamz, YT and Scotland's own lyrical legend Soom T. Their live work feeds directly into the studio productions. Mungo's crucial releases, mainly on their own Scotch Bonnet label, have topped the reggae bestsellers on numerous occasions. 'Soundsystem Champions', their previous album released in 2008, has turned many on to their sounds and there has long been a clamour for a follow up. 'Forward Ever' is a distilled concoction of soundsystem smashers that are taking the world by storm and engaging widespread new interest in bass culture with contemporary music that hasn't lost its roots.'Forward Ever' has originated and evolved in the Jamaican soundsystem tradition, capturing spontaneous moments from live sessions and taking them fresh into the studio. Each track has been picked for the positive reaction it has received when played out and the album has been compiled how Mungo's Hi Fi would play it in the dance. The album kicks off with the late great Sugar Minott's dubplate intro in a 'Scrubadub Style' on Mungo's Greetings riddim, recorded in Scotland shortly before the legend's passing. Then comes an ode to diversity in the shape of 'Everyman Different' with Rasta Pacey covering Errol Dunkley's hit, treating it to a massive rolling bassline. The tempo speeds up when Charlie P takes the mic and rips it up with his infectious 'Skidip' on a pumping version of Billy Jean. Then it's lyrics time as Mr Williamz fires out 'Computer Age', talking about the advance of technology. You are guaranteed to have at least your head nodding by this point, and then it goes next level with Kenny Knots stonking 'Gimme Gimme' on Mungo's Bogle riddim, bringing up the vibes with appeals for more love. This drops into a digital groove as Pupa Jim's poignant 'Boat People' reminds us of the contemporary realities of inequality and injustice. Anger at comfortable complacency grows when YT is moved to 'Scream' about the situation over Mungo's Bad From riddim, and the Babylon-beating steps up as Omar Perry confirms that 'Dem No Like It'. Soom T brings things back to a personal level with her tale of a 'Bad Bad Boy' over an updated ska riddim before we settle in to a 'New York Boogie' with Ranking Levy's laidback foundation DJ style. Zeb And Scotty bring more oldschool dancehall vibes as they invite us to 'Warm Up' and the digital reggae sounds continue with Biga Ranx and his evocation of soundsystem culture 'Session Pon Top'. Then Soom T is back with machine gun lyrics challenging MCs to test the 'Soundboy Police' which drops big time as Mr Williamz returns to present 'Musically Mad' over the fattest bassline yet. The session is rounded off with a ganja anthem in the shape of 'High Grade' featuring Gentleman's Dub Club building to a two tone mosh pit crescendo. Double LP version mastered at D&M Berlin is pressed on heavyweight 180g vinyl and comes in a stylish gatefold sleeve.
