Netwerk - I Need You LP 2x12"

Netwerk

I Need You LP 2x12"

2x12inchPASTDUELP015
Past Due
24.09.2021

Past Due Records and Jerome Derradji are incredibly proud to present the complete and official reissue of Netwerk's boogie masterpiece "I Need You" on a Gatefold double LP / CD (with booklet) that includes 8 unreleased songs and the story of the band written by Jacob Arnold.

Netwerk was one of New York's best funk R&B studio projects, created by three prolific New York session musicians: guitar player Kevin Robinson, drummer Howard King, and keyboard player Kenni Hairston. The group's only album, I Need You, was recorded for Salsoul Records in 1984, but was never released due to the label's mounting financial issues. Licensee Rams Horn Records in the Netherlands pressed around 200 copies, under a misspelling of the band's name and using a recycled Salsoul artwork, before the LP was pulled from the market, making it an absolute holy grail of NYC boogie, funk and early garage.

Before starting Netwerk, Kevin, Kenny and Howard were high in demand session musicians playing for Mtume, Gary Bartz, The Brooklyn, Bronx & Queens Band, Cameo, Cindy Lauper, Slave and many others.

They created Netwerk, signed with Salsoul and hired vocalists Johnny Kemp, Keny Washington, Kevin Allen and recorded one of the best and most sought after boogie funk and R&B album to come out of NYC in the mid Eighties. For good measure, we've extensively remastered all the songs for your enjoyment and ours.

Rhythm Rhyme Revolution + DJ Tabu - BadThingz

The redoubtable renaissance man Barrie K Sharpe is back with a scorching vinyl 45 showing he’s lost none of his edge or ingenuity in producing a potent fusion of funk, soul jazz and beyond. This effusive cut sounds utterly unlike anybody else and is testament to his flamboyant superfly style cementing why he is considered to being one of the burgeoning spearheads in the Acid Jazz movement of yesteryear.

It’s interesting to note he hasn’t stood still either and has been extremely prolific releasing three exceptional albums under the banner of Rhythm Rhyme Revolution and this slow burning dance floor groove is the perfect distillation of his recent body of work.

‘BaDThingz’ falls between the sensual and the spiritual like all good dance music and the direct ‘come on’ lyrics becomes an injunction to move on the facts not just suppositions!

The groove is the epitome of seduction itself with a funkified blessedness as clear as a bell. A fantastic homily signalling the virtues of sexual chemistry whilst highlighting the modern era of cutting edge studio production to sonic perfection. The groove is simply total atomic explosiveness and DJ Tabu is someone you’d definitely want cooing in your ear!

Aided and abetted by multi instrumentalist Gareth Tasker and trumpeter Kenny Wellington it seems your man is riding his groove to glory - with a bit of added polish from Fritz Catlin. This is going to have untold longevity in any DJ’s trunk of funk. Grab it now for a shock of pure pleasure. (Emrys Baird – Blues & Soul)

Nu Guinea - Nuova Napol

Nu Guinea

Nuova Napol

12inchNG01
NG Records
26.07.2019

Almost 2 years after the success of the album THE TONY ALLEN EXPERIMENTS and a few months after the release of the 7inch AMORE, Nu Guinea return to the scene with a new LP published by their newborn label NG RECORDS.

After touring the world looking for sounds suitable for their vibrations, NU GUINEA decided to go back to square one, Napoli, where Massimo Di Lena and Lucio Aquilina were born and raised. They watched their city from a distance reconstructing its energy from their studio in Berlin, calibrating the synths on the meridian of Vesuvius, the volcano that has always protected and threatened Napoli.

NUOVA NAPOLI is the result of a long musical research that has become a historical investigation on the sound that shaped Napoli during the '70s and '80s, starting from the contamination of genres (disco, jazz-funk, African rhythms) which ended up in Nu Guinea's DNA.

In this album the synthesizers fill the spaces between the past and the future, tightening in a single body acoustic instruments, electronics and voices in Neapolitan dialect. It is the first time that the duo has worked with such a large group of musicians, some of whom are exponents of the contemporary Neapolitan scene.

WARNING: We recommend listening to Nuova Napoli while walking in the alleys of Napoli's historic center, around wet clothes hanging and street vendors on tiny three-wheelers.

Barbara Tucker - Think

Barbara Tucker

Think

7"-VinylQTZSEVEN007
QUANTIZE
13.09.2017

Here at Quantize we simply love confounding expectations 'cos, guess what We love all kinds of music and don't like to be stereotyped. But this one even surprised the hell out of us - so much so that we figured it deserved a 7" vinyl release in tribute to the original format.

"Think (About It)" was originally recorded 45 years ago in the summer of 1972 by the fiery Lyn Collins. Produced by the Godfather Of Soul, James Brown, it barely scraped into the RnB Top 10 at the time and normally would have faded into time as just another great James Brown produced record but in 1987, it started to get sampled by a new generation of Hip-Hop artists like Roxanne Shante and Robe Base and DJ E-Z Rock. Suddenly the world woke up to the possibilities of sampling and since that point, "Think (About It)" has been sampled 1908 times and is the No.3 most-sampled record of all time. So we decided to cut a new version of it with real musicians and one of the few vocalists that would be capable of matching Lyn Collins firepower - Dance Music's diva supreme, the incredible Barbara Tucker. We wanted Barbara to really cut loose on this and she didn't disappoint. And yes, those are real keyboards, real guitar and real horns. Believe us, this session was off the scale! So when we finally got our breath back we decided we HAD to get this out on a 45 on its 45th anniversary! It seemed the most appropriate way to do justice to a record that simply jumps outta the grooves.

We believe "Think (About It)" will have universal appeal pretty much everywhere since the song is now implanted within the DNA of dance music across the world.

MMYYKK - Science

MMYYKK’s Science EP arrives at a time when the world needs it. The eponymous title track is about recognising the power and connection that we all have to the cosmos - and it feels like no coincidence that this body of work arrives in 2021.

The EP balances universal themes with playfulness; asks hard questions relating to accountability and materiality whilst remaining musically cohesive and funky throughout. An exceedingly difficult artist to pigeonhole, MMYYKK (pronounced Mike) works concurrently within the realms of soul, jazz, hip hop, R&B and ambient; his sound equally indebted to his fellow west-coast natives Thundercat and Flying Lotus as it is to synth experimentalists Herbie Hancock and Stevie Wonder.

Whilst MMYYKK operates as the multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, producer & engineer across all 6 tracks, we can still hear the richness of improvisation musical collaboration involved in the making of this record, with numerous cameos from artists in MMYYKK’s adopted hometown of Minneapolis as well as a feature from London’s very own Demae.

The city of Minneapolis, whilst not addressed directly in the lyrics, provided a backdrop like no other whilst this album was coming together. Being at the epicentre of such a tragedy had a profound effect on the formation of the EP... “The City was literally burning...” MMYYKK recalls as he goes on to explain that tackling themes such as police reform, reparations and accountability in his work is his way of taking a stand in the fight for justice.

Despite the grief prevalent in the city, the EP exudes a complex “dopeness”, executed so effortlessly it belies the skill involved in the process - it’s precisely this nonchalant cool that defines what SCIENCE means to the artist.

Whilst we can dissect the inspirations and trace the lineage of this body of work- the result is singular. It’s clear that Mychal Fisher, aka MMYYKK is operating on his own terms, in a lane of his own - and making it look easy.

The Brand New Heavies - Beautiful/Getaway

May 1990 The Brand New Heavies released ‘that blue album’ and with it came a winning formula which would go on to earn them 16 top 40 hits and three million worldwide album sales not to mention two UK Platinum albums. 23.07.2021

The second drop from Ferg Ireland and his heavy duty trio. Volume II finds Ireland (bass), Nathaniel Facey (sax) and James Maddren (drums) channelling the great chordless trios of Sonny Rollins. The trio sound authoritative whilst playing the proverbial out of a New Cross related blues - cat-like on ‘Mel’s Mood’ and stately on the serene ‘When You Know’. Most of the tracks on this record were first takes and have an immediacy that allows Ireland’s assured compositions to take unexpected directions. In the case of Lips, these boil over into a spontaneous furore on the outro, the faders left up to capture the vibe.

Mildlife - Phase 2

Mildlife

Phase 2

7"-VinylRREP02
Research Records
08.03.2021

Early in 2018, the world was introduced to Mildlife through their debut album Phase. Few first releases amass praise from Mojo, The Guardian, BBC 6 Music, The Express, and Shindig, then go on to be celebrated by DJ Mag, Resident Advisor, Worldwide FM, Dummy and Indie Shuffle. But it's precisely this eclectic mix of genres, tastes, and influences that brought Mildlife together, and what they committed to reflecting in their sound. After a surreal start to 2018, the four-piece completed a sold-out national tour of Australia, and recently announced plans to cross the oceans for their debut Europe and UK tours.

With the release of their debut imminent, Mildlife took retreat at Research Records HQ in Melbourne, staying overnight after recording each morning and afternoon. It resulted in the evolution of the title track, newly imagined and re-contextualised at increased tempo with swathes of improvisation throughout. The studio recording was the culmination of the song's growth in a live setting, evolving on club stages and at festivals throughout 2017.

Mildlife's knack for locked-in grooves and celestial tones features heavily across 'Phase II', a more than 11-minute sonic journey. Kevin McDowell's synth soars while Adam Halliwell's growing prowess as a flautist is peppered over James Donald's shimmering percussion. Shortly after, Tom Shanahan phased bass appears, and the four lock into a groove that gives a subtle nod to 1960s Krautrock band, Can. It's not long before 'Phase II' erupts into a cosmic jazz-funk that urges you to move. It sucks you in, free of worry and consequence; utterly otherworldly. It's no surprise that the band has been described as "kaleidoscopic", "irresistible" and "enchanting". With Mildlife, you'll always leave wanting more.

The Mighty Mocambos - 2066 (Gold Vinyl Edition)

Limited edition gold vinyl edition.
Hamburg's funk adventurers at the top of their game with special guests Ice-T, Charlie Funk, Peter Thomas, Gizelle Smith, Lee Fields, JSwiss & the Mocambo Kidz.

Original press release note (2019):
Carrying blistering funk lines in their fingers and worldly influences in their hearts, the unique and distinctive Mocambo sound is not one to be confused with retro bands trying to recapture an era. Eschewing traditional recording methods, this DIY crew are committed to driving forwards, and 2066 sees them at the height of their powers, broadcasting a call for unity.
After reaching new audiences worldwide and earning critical praise for their two long players on Brooklyn's Big Crown Records in their tropical guise as Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band, the band have reassembled and refocused in their original form, the workhorses behind dozens of 45s on the Mocambo label and beyond. Crossing generations, this album introduces some of the world's youngest funk talent to step up and rub shoulders with soul and rap legends, soul sisters, an elder statesman composer/arranger and a brand new emerging artist out of New York.
As with all Mocambo releases, the two sides of the record have been meticulously sequenced by the
band. Side A welcomes us aboard with joyous instrumental stomper Preaching To The Choir, and a call to build bridges from Mocambo chanteuse and percussionist Nichola Richards, duetting with emerging rap talent, New York MC JSwiss. B-girls and b-boys are called to the dancefloor as Superstrada and Concrete Stardust commence, all buzzing synth lines and relentless drums. New Jersey legend and Big Crown associate Mr Lee Fields is guest of honour for Where Do We Go From Here before a horn workout brings us to a close with Macumba. It's time for a breather.
The B side kicks off with the grand return of the Golden Girl of Funk, Gizelle Smith, a sister who's been busy taking on the world. Composer and presenter Peter Thomas narrates a Return To Space to mark the centenary of the debut of his score to sci-fi show Space Patrol, which first broadcast in 1966. We're back down to Earth and the mean streets for the furious drums and car chase workout of Golden Shadow. Today slows down the pace for a reflective ballad with Nichola front and centre - and here's the next generation: the Mocambo Kidz sing along to their parents' instrumentation for Here We Go, a new kids' block party anthem... with no sleep 'til bedtime. The album closer makes it clear that the Mocambos are nowhere near powering down as Ice T and Charlie F unk bring their A-game for an old school attack which, since you're up bouncing anyway, gives you no excuse not to flip the LP and drop the needle right back on to Side A. Onwards!
A summation of their journey so far and a celebration in anticipation of what's to come, the album is set
to take its place in a legacy of open minded, organically recorded music, showering listeners with the crew's maze of tantalising sounds pulled from funk, afro, hip hop with cinematic composition and storytelling.

HONNE - LET’S JUST SAY THE WORLD ENDED A WEEK FROM NOW, WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

HONNE have announced the release of their much-anticipated new album, ‘Let’s Just Say The World Ended A Week From Now, What Would You Do?’ – a record that toasts the start of a new era of music from one of the UK’s most inventive and original outfits.

Releasing on October 22, ‘Let’s Just Say The World Ended A Week From Now, What Would You Do?’ forms HONNE’s third studio album following critically acclaimed LPs, ‘Warm On A Cold Night’ (2016) and ‘Love Me / Love Me Not’ (2018), as well as ‘no song without you’ – a surprise 14-track mixtape released last summer.

Written throughout the course of 2020, ‘Let’s Just Say The World Ended A Week From Now, What Would You Do?’ captures HONNE in limitless full bloom – as songwriters, producers and collaborators. “In the past, we’ve limited ourselves”, HONNE explain. “We might get to a section of a song and things are getting really exciting, but we then pull ourselves back and say, ‘Can we really do that?’. Now, we’ve sidestepped the rules and done whatever we wanted to do.”

This sense of freedom permeates the tracklist, which is defined as much by its eye-catching collaborations – Khalid (‘Three Strikes’), Griff (‘Back On Top’), 88 Rising’s NIKI (‘Coming Home’) – as it is by its musicianship, shimmering pop feel and intelligent song-writing; Sam Smith (‘Back On Top’) and MNEK (‘Easy On Me’) also co-wrote songs on the album.

Bold and ambitious , ‘Let’s Just Say The World Ended A Week From Now, What Would You Do?’ brings together everything HONNE have worked towards in their career so far, while simultaneously pushing them into broad and exciting new spaces.

David Batiste and The Gladiators - Funky Soul, Pt.1 / Funky Soul, Pt. 2

7" of this funk classic re-issued for the first time from recently discovered Master Tapes.

Funky Soul (originally titled "Going To See The Man") was a routine crowd pleaser during live shows that even had its own dance "rock the ship." This was the part two of the song. It was part one that was created in the studio as a riff off of part two. The raw energy of this song when performed live created hysteria and drove spectators into a frenzy. It didn't take long for word to get around and catch the attention of the famous WYLD DJ Larry McKinley. McKinley wanted to capture this magic onto record and helped arrange the session at Cosimo Matassa's studio. He drove Isaac Hayes down from Memphis to New Orleans in 1968 and organized Issac Hayes to arrange the horn section on this record while he was working with the Okeh label and developing an emerging artist named Margie Joseph. It was during this time that Margie recorded two singles Why Does A Man Have To Lie/See (Okeh, 4-7304) and Show Me/A Matter Of Life Or Death (Okeh, 4-7313).

David Batiste & The Gladiators were a band David Batiste and several of his brothers formed while they were in High School in New Orleans back in 1961. The band won a talent show in 1965 at Harlem's famous Apollo Theater and are the pioneers of what is now known as "Funk." David Batiste & The Gladiators were legendary mainstays of every bar in New Orleans that every band was hustling trying to get booked at.

It's no wonder that this song was famously complied on BBE Records and Ubiquity in the 1990's, rediscovered and performed by Miles Tackett & The Breakestra in the early 2000's. Those compilations contained audio sourced only from the vinyl record originally pressed up twice in the early 1970s and sought after by collectors and DJs for years and years. This version is from a direct master tape transfer from recently discovered NOLA tapes. But wait… The party's just started. An entire album's worth of 1960s previously unreleased David Batiste & The Gladiators material from recently discovered master tapes is in the works and forthcoming on Family Groove Records.

Kamaal Williams - DJ-Kicks

Kamaal Williams

DJ-Kicks

2x12inchK7388LP
7K! Records
05.11.2019

Game-changing multi-instrumentalist Kamaal Williams has put together the
latest DJ-Kicks mix. Due for release on November 8th, it features four of his
own brand new and exclusive tracks and hints at the wide world of influences
that have made him one of the most prominent artists of the last few years.
Williams has taken his long standing love of seventies jazz fusion and mixed
it up with the contemporary sound of the London underground to devastating effect. House, broken beat, grime, soul, funk, hip hop and jazz all
permeate his work, which has seen him evolve from producer Henry Wu to
acclaimed live band Kamaal Williams, backed by talented drummers and
bassists. His pioneering work in the studio and live arena has influenced a
whole new generation of like-minded musicians that have helped make the
capital one of the most musically exciting and quickly evolving cities in the
world, with Williams' own virtuoso drumming and percussion right at the
heart of it all.
Kamaal Williams was one half of the duo who wrote the breakthrough
Yussef Kamaal album 'Black Focus’, one of the most talked about records
of 2016. Vinyl pressings kept selling out, it received rave reviews, earned
the band the Breakthrough Act award at the 2017 Jazz FM awards and led
to spellbinding live shows all over Europe. His follow up , The Return, came
on Williams' own new Black Focus label and took his band global, all while
picking up nominations for best independent album at the AIM Music
Awards.
Improvised rhythm and spirituality are at the heart of everything Williams
does, as is London life, with its diverse people, cultures and musical
customs all feeding into his work. That is also true when making more
electronic sounds as Henry Wu, who appears here after standout EPs on
labels like Rhythm Section International. Williams' music is so individual it is
more than deserving of its own tag: the artist himself calls it Wu Funk, and
some of the many sounds that feed into it are all showcased on this adventurous new mix.
Exclusives include a live take of 'Snitches Brew,' new Kamaal Williams
tracks 'Shinjuku' and 'Strings ATL', as well as 'Wivout U' from Henry Wu.
Those vital highlights sit next to classic jams from Southern Freeze, a strong
contingent of London innovators from K15 to Dego and Tenderlonius to
Kaidi Tatham, with funk driven house from Peven Everett, raw stuff from
Steve Julien, lush synth grooves from Lone and feel good grooves from Phil
Asher all making this is an honest and uplifting collection that, when necessary, is happy to eschew blends, fades and mixing in favour of red hot
selections and sequencing. Kamaal Williams DJ-Kicks is a fascinating
insight into the record collection of a true musical alchemist

Chuwanaga
28.06.2021

Parisian label Chuwanaga proudly presents Latitude, Saint-James label co-founder new studio project. Keeping it close to the deep jazz-funk ethos of the label, Latitude brings to the light two luminous songs of joy and hope for a better day, highly danceable yet rich and complex grooves with a human feel to feed your soul and make you move. Their new EP Leo / Attitude presents these first effort with a Dub Remix by Mato: plenty of diverse tastes for every music enthusiasts. Available as Vinyl 12" and Digital.

Latitude is french. Not a random collection of chansons sung in french. Latitude is so french in its sheer elegance, in its simple yet so sophisticated seemingly effortless attempt to groove in a pop context, trying to create moments of grace in the process. Latitude is here with the right vibe as the chorus of "Attitude" says it in french: "It’s the bad attitude, always the good latitude". Latitude is sprung out of the wicked musicianship of Parisian jazz-funk and fusion mavericks and Saint-James tight and adventurous compositions and production. All that jazz combined with David Cukier (Greita) retro-futurist engineering skills in these intense sessions captured in his cutting edge vintage Delta studio.

On A Side, "Leo (Extended Mix)" is an uptempo disco track for the dancers but also a beautiful song for the summer. A seductive number with a pregnant classic French jazz-funk feeling with the help of Parisian singer Club Celest’s energy and beautiful voice. It comes on digital as a short edit for radio but as a serious extended 12inch mix on the vinyl with 8 minutes and 10 seconds of pure pleasure, ending in a real climax after an irresistible percussion break.

On B1, "Attitude" enchanting quality shines with a banging rhythm section and goes for the win as an anthem chorus while sweeping synths keep on growing till the very last drop. On B2, Reggae/Dub don Mato (Stix Records) delivers a sweet dub wise riddim for the Lovers Rock massive.

NMX - M.E.T.H.O.D. (NMX Modern Love Mix)

Naughty NMX brings a Shaolin flavoured Club Banger, that takes the M.E.T.H.O.D. man right into the 80s club feel of the original inspiration for it's hook. This mix makes Tical sound like a oldschool party MC in juxtapose to his usual gritty boom bap sound. On the flip we find his Clan brother in rhyme Big Baby Jesus about the cash money over hyped up funky stabs and a bouncy bass line. This sexy version of a rap club classic will have those booties shakin' around the globe.

Black Heat - Wanaoh | Chip's Funk

"Matasuna Records" has dug into the archives of "Atlantic Records" and unearthed two funky treats from the band "Black Heat". The funk & soul band was active in the 1970s and remained under the radar despite their talent. Both songs from their 1972 debut album are available for the first time as an official reissue on 7inch - the song "Wanaoh" even premieres on a vinyl single.

"Wanaoh" on the A-side is a monster funk joint written by the band's guitarist "Bradley Ownes". The song features a top notch mix with all kinds of delicious ingredients: a killer bassline, funky guitar riffs, crunchy drums, deep organ, tasty horns and a super funky flute. Absolutely astonishing that this song didn't go down in the annals of funk.

"Chip's Funk" on the B-side penned by bassist "Naamon Jones" also continues in the same vein and is an absolutely great tune which succinctly showcases "Raymond Green's" harmonica. The band's name couldn't apply better to this song either: Black Heat is exactly what the musicians deliver here.

"King Raymond Green" was born in 1951 to African American and Puerto Rican parents in "San German, Puerto Rico". Green, a percussionist and vocalist, formed the eight-piece funk & soul band "Black Heat" in the early 1970s. They signed to "Atlantic Records" and released three LPs between 1972 and 1975. Despite a high level of talent and creativity, they never achieved a great degree of popularity or commercial success like other bands from that time. Only their funky midtempo song "No Time To Burn" was a moderate hit. The band broke up in the late 70s. In August 2008, members of the band reunited for the first time in over 3 decades to play together on one stage at a memorial concert in NYC for "Joel Dorn", their original producer at Atlantic Records.

"Black Heat" is another example of a band with talented musicians who never managed to gain a foothold in the mainstream, but are highly regarded by connoisseurs. Their music was also influential in hip hop - their songs have been sampled many times by the likes of "Wu Tang Clan", "Notorious B.I.G.", "DJ Premier" etc., proving their influence on subsequent generations.

"King Raymond" was rooted in music throughout his complete life. By studying audio engineering he was able to establish himself as a first class sound engineer and worked with many R&B greats like "Chuck Brown & The Soul Searchers", "Dr. John" or "Carlos Santana". In the 90's he joined the band "The Flamingos" as lead singer, until he changed to the legendary R&B group "The Clovers" in 1999, where he also worked as lead singer. Green was also a songwriter & producer in Washington, DC. "King Raymond Green" passed away in 2017.

Cesar Mariano & Cia - São Paulo Brasil

One of the finest Brazilian jazz funk fusion albums ever recorded; thoroughly deserving of its cult status. First official reissue outside of Brazil.

Cesar Camargo Mariano is a celebrated Brazilian jazz pianist, composer and producer, born in Sao Paulo in the 1940's. He has played and worked with the likes of Elis Regina (to whom he was married at one point), Som Tres and Sambalanco Trio and still plays very regularly today.

'Sao Paulo Brasil' saw Mariano and co. step deep into jazz funk/fusion territory - and nail it. Tight, tough drum grooves, intricate arrangements, layers of synthesisers, percussion and FX transport and tell a story from the first beat.

Nick Bike dropped his first guest mix for Oonops radioshow a few years ago. Over the years Oonops played Nick's tunes in his shows so it was just a matter of time until they collab for an exclusive 45 for this Resense-series.

Expect two hot versions by James Brown and Q-Tip over a heavy beat construct. Not without good reason you'll see his edits landing into Questlove's or Jazzy Jeff's crates.

Kamal Abdul-Alim - Dance

Accomplished trumpeter, composer, bandleader and educator, Kamal Abdul-Alim has been actively involved in creative music for decades. He has toured Africa, Europe, the Caribbean and the United States. He has recorded with all kinds of bands, large and small, and performed in festivals all over the world. “He takes the postbop of the 50s and free-form jazz of the 60s and turns it into an even balance of fine textures. Alim, who is highly underrated, has one of the most beautiful tones and concepts of jazz. A master of improvisation, he knows the art of weaving different ideas, whether they stem from Manhattan’s lower East Side or Europe” (Hugh Wyatt, New York Daily News). “Dance” was recorded in 1983 but first released on vinyl in 1987. Rhythm section includes drummer Idris Muhammad. Original pressings are extremely rare and expensive. “Brotherhood” is a much sought after track on the jazz dance scene.
