Marking sixty years of Bossa Nova, and twenty years since Marcos Valle's first release for Far Out Recordings, what better time to bring back this era-defining classic from the Brazilian master composer

Throughout his astounding six-decade career, infiltrating pop, bossa nova, samba, delicate psychedelia, jazz and funk, Marcos Valle has consistently shown a dogged determination to transcend the traditions and structures of bossa nova, whilst never veering away from the movement's inherent, fundamental spirit. To some extent, his epithet 'the original Rio beach boy' is a handy one: it reflects the origin and character of his often sun-soaked sound, but expounding his importance in the lineage of Brazilian music, he is more discerningly known as 'the renaissance man of Brazilian pop'. He is indeed one the very greatest and most important composers, arrangers, writers and performers in Brazil.

Up until Nova Bossa Nova, Marcos Valle hadn't released an album for well over a decade. After 1983, he resented the way the music industry had changed with commercialisation and new demands curtailing his creative freedom. This was until 1994 when Marcos met Far Out boss Joe Davis and they recorded a track for Far Out's first Friends From Rio album. This new collaborative partnership resulted in a new solo album, which commenced recording in 1996.

Nova Bossa Nova brought Marcos bouncing back into the 90s, slotting nicely in place alongside the acid jazz movement as well as a voracious new demand for Brazilian music on dancefloors from London to Tokyo. It was witnessing the London club scene's growing appetite for Brazilian music, as well as a lack of new sounds coming out of Brazil at the time, that a young Joe Davis put in a proposal to record a new album with one of his musical idols. Joe wanted to facilitate an album which would combine the latest technologies and production techniques, with live to analogue tape recording: a Marcos Valle album tailor-made for London's clubs. Always open to modern influences and possibilities, Marcos agreed to the project, and Joe and his production partner Roc Hunter flew to Rio in '96. The record wasn't released until '98, as the original ½ inch tapes were stolen from Far Out's London studio, meaning parts of the album had to be re-recorded.

Nova Bossa Nova was unveiled at the peak of the of the Brazilian movement, the record would also prove to be something of a revolution, inspiring a new generation of artists like Bebel Gilberto, Sabrina Malheiros, Da Lata and Bossacucanova, who continued to fuse Brazilian influences with modern electronic sounds.

Bill Browns super rare Brownstone release is one for the deep heads, less well known than label mate 'Everyday People' but just as rare and collectable. Shuffling sunshine soul its all about the groove and feeling. 500 copies only. One for the heads.
Bill Brown and Al Hall jr met around 1971, they were both in south central L.A and shared the same apartment building, also in the same building was Doug Carn and brownstone singer billy Wilson. These studio sessions were done at Paramount studios Hollywood where Al Hall jr was working for producer Art Smith a&c music. The main distributor for A&C was Accent records.

Nagel. A Long Play-cd And 2lp-set, Including The Great Jazz Funk Tracks "steamer", Steps Ahead", "keep Going" Plus The Brazilian Tinged Jazz Dancers´"four Corners" And "flying Carpet Ride". All Music Transferred And Carefully Restored From The Original Master Tapes.

West Germany In The 70's Of The Last Century. Composer And Arranger Fritz Münzer (1934-2007) Is One Of The Country's Best Jazz Saxophonists And Flutists. After A Career In The 50's And 60's As A Hip Musician On The German Hard Bop And Westcoast Scene, The Man From Mannheim First Refuses To Establish His Own Band, But Then Forms "second Direction". With This Formation He Records "four Corners", A So Called Library Lp For The Small Publishing Label "trend Records". The Album Was Produced In 1976 By "joy Unlimited" Founder And Guitarist Klaus R. Nagel With Top Notch Musicians At Tonstudio Bauer In Ludwigsburg. Münzer Is Now Active Behind The Scenes, Writing Music And Is Heard On Countless Recordings For Different Music Publishers.

Amongst Connoisseurs "four Corners" Is Considered One Of The Really Outstanding Jazz Funk Fusion Albums From Germany. Münzer Is Joined By Gerhard Spirka On Electric Bass, Val Hargreaves On Drums, Karl-heinz Merkel On Fender Rhodes And Occasionally Jörg Gebhardt On Congas. However, The Finished Lp Did Not Appear In Shops. It Was Exclusively Available To Broadcasters And Foreign Sub-publishers By Nagel's Publisher "badenia-vineta", For Use On Radio And Television. Therefore, Background Information And Visual Material Regarding Second Direction Is Missing. There Is No Band Story, Band Photos Or Anything, With The Exception Of An Unusual Artistic Designed Front Cover By Karl Hans Merkel. His Artwork Shows Four Stylized Profile Views Of The Musicians.

For A Long Time, The Album Remained A Secret. Then, In The Mid-90s, It Is Suddenly Discovered In Alternative German Music Clubs And Discotheques. During The "acid Jazz" Revival In The United Kingdom, The Dancers At Mojo, Unique And Atomic Café Not Only Move To Electronic Music, But Also To Jazz And Funk Again. Now The "rare Grooves" Of Second Direction Are On The Playlists. Dj Rainer Trüby Curates His Internationally Successful "glücklich" Compilations With European, Brazilian & Fusion Jazz Of The 70's And 80's. In 1996 On The Second Volume, He Presents Second Direction's "flying Carpet Ride". And So Begins The Hunt For The Extremely Rare Lp. "high Class Fusion And Brazilian Beats Made In Germany" On A Level With Bands Such As Weather Report Or Azimuth! The Track Is Frequently Played At Trüby's "rootdown" Parties And You Just Had To Have It! In Addition To The High Musical Quality, It Is Above All The Rarity And Obscurity Of The Record That Makes It Interesting For Djs And Collectors Alike Around The World Today.

Back In 1978. Fritz Münzer Wants To Deliver A Second Lp For Badenia-vineta With His Band Second Direction. Under The Working Title "steps Ahead", It Is Produced At Studio 2000 In Pforzheim, With A New Formation Of High Profile Musicians. This Time Münzer Plays With Toni Rabold On Trumpet, Pit Löw On Keyboards, Chuck Tscheschner On Electric Bass And Peter Lübke On Drums And Percussion. This Band Also Impresses With First Class, Danceable, Fusion Jazz. However, To The Surprise Of Everyone, The New Recordings Are Not Taken Into Account And The Tapes Soon Disappear In Nagel's Archives. A Second Vinyl Lp Is Not Manufactured And Münzer's Project, Second Direction, Becomes History After Only Two Years. With The Present Sonorama Reissue These Lost "steps Ahead" Sessions Are Released For The First Time In 2018, As Well As "four Corners" Produced By Klaus R. Nagel And Directly Transferred From The Master Tapes.

In The 1960's, Nagel Studies Early Music At The Mannheim University Of Music And The Schola Cantorum Basiliensis In Basel. He Then Works As A Freelance Composer, Arranger And Musician For Film, Radio And Television. Soon After, He Founded The Progressive And Internationally Successful Jazz Rock Group "joy Unlimited" With The Singer Joy Fleming. The Pairing Starts An Intensive Concert Career In Germany And Abroad. He Is Also Able To Bring Two Of His Complex Jazz Rock Ballets To The Stage. Nagel Is Still Active Today As A Bustling Music Publisher. During The 60's, Fritz Münzer Plays With Legends Such As Manfred Schoof, Joe Haider And Hartwig Bartz. In The 1980s He Becomes A Kind Of Father Figure To Young Jazz Musicians In The Rhine-neckar Area, Enjoying A Reputation For Playing The "blackest Sounds" On The Local Scene. From 1987, Münzer Teaches At The University Of Mannheim And Starts The So Called "college Jazz Ensemble".

For Decades, His Changing Formations Have Been Like A Regional School Of Jazz. Much In The Spirit Of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. Later On He Co-founded The Independent Label "jazz 'n' Arts" With Olaf Schönborn And Thomas Siffling. In Addition To "four Corners" Other Hidden Münzer Projects For Various Music Libraries Are Highly Recommended, Most Of Them In Collaboration With Jazz Pianist Wolfgang Lauth. In The 70's And 80's He Records Some Interesting Jazz And Funk Library Lps, Under Pseudonyms Such As "the House Band" Or "sound Factory Inc.". Under The Name "jazz Unit" A Vocal Jazz Album Was Released In 1982 With His Wife, Singer Peggy Drake. This Forms Part Of The Next Treasure Trove Of Fabulous Work By Mannheim's Jazzman Fritz Münzer ...

The electronic music duo Groove Armada released their fourth album Lovebox in 2002. The album includes some of their best tracks, ramping through genres from rock 'n' roll to the psychedelica and ska. It also features collaborations with artists like Neneh Cherry and Richie Havens, who ads some soulful voices to the whole. Opener Purple Haze' introduces us to a giant guitar riff and highlight Madder' takes the groove out of The Clash's Magnificent Seven', before moving on to the raps by M.A.D. tracks from their limited edition 7' and 10' singles on LP and digital
download formats. Among those artists / tracks involved in this collection are the skittering Arthur Russell-indebted jam of 'Running Out' by Boxed In & Formation, the DNA-rearranging genre-shifting post punk of Melt Yourself Down, the glacial synth-pop of JW Ridley and the Sademeets-PJ Harvey power pop of newcomer DEWEY.
In the strong tradition of breaking their own rules the compilation
also includes the two tracks from Speedy's very first double A-Side - MEATDUSCHER aka Meatraffle's 'The Bird Song' (one of Marc Riley's Tracks Of The Year) and the dirty riffage of Warmduscher's 'The Sweet Smell Of Florida' which also appears on their recent Careyproduced album 'Whale City'.

AKA Dan Carey. Speedy Wunderground, the label run by Dan Carey alongside Alexis Smith and Pierre Hall, is changing. As always this evolvement is a natural thing, driven by the artists and, more importantly, the music itself. Whilst the focus is still on the idea of spontaneity examples like the above are a perfect example of how the imprint is developing.
The whole idea of Speedy is to be unrestricted,' says Hall, 'so
although the 'rules' themselves have always been slightly tongue-incheek there would be a subtle sense of irony in the idea that we were restricted by our own restrictions! So we're kinda open to anything. That's the point. As always, the music takes first priority.'

Estonian archival label Frotee's 6th release 'Suvi ei jää' by Heidy Tamme is available again as 7' single with new B-side for the Balearic heads.

While 'Suvi ei jää' is a cover version of Roberta Flack's song 'What a Woman Really Means', it was given new Estonian lyrics which eloquently describe the summer season and its brevity (title translates as 'Summer Doesn't Stay'). It's sung by popular Estonian singer Heidy Tamme, recorded in 1982, and arranged by Tiit Paulus, one of the best Estonian jazz guitarists. After original release of 7' in 2015, Frotee has discovered another version of the title track. Tiit Paulus had played guitar over instrumental version of 'Suvi ei jää' and this version is now essential for our balearic summers.

When Aretha Franklin joined Atlantic Records in 1967, it was the beginning of an unprecedented run that would ultimately cement her place as a music legend, a global household name, and one of the most influential singers of all time.

The Atlantic Singles Collection 1967-1970 features 34 singles which Franklin released during her first three years with Atlantic Records. Arranged chronologically, the songs on the new collection originally appeared on six studio albums: I Never Loved A Man The Way I Love You (1967), Aretha Arrives (1967), Lady Soul (1968), Aretha Now (1968), Soul '69 (1969), This Girl's In Love With You (1970), and Spirits In The Dark (1970). The only exception is Franklin's cover of Elton John's 'Border Song', which was released as a single in 1970 and later appeared on her 1972 album Young, Gifted and Black. The vinyl version is a double LP with 25 tracks.

The album is stacked with many of Franklin's best-known songs, including 'I Never Loved A Man (The Way I Love You)', 'Respect', 'Baby I Love You', 'Chain Of Fools' and '(Sweet Sweet Baby) Since You've Been Gone.' Several of the songs on this collection are cover versions that underscore Franklin's exceptional skill at reinterpreting music and making songs her own. Among the highlights are her versions of Sam Cooke's 'You Send Me', The Band's 'The Weight', The Beatles' 'Eleanor Rigby', and Dionne Warwick's 'I Say A Little Prayer', which became a Billboard Top 10 hit for Franklin in 1968.

The Mabon Dawud Republic, Hungary's first all-star progressive Afrobeat ensemble started as the Fela Kuti tribute band for the very first Felabration event in Budapest, organised by the band itself and joined by Fela's original Egypt 80 band member, keyboard player and singer Dele Sosimi.

Given the member's love for Afrobeat, the jamming soon evolved into a project of their own songs. Their republic is a place filled with the soul-warming vibes of a 15 piece orchestra, a place for dancers, a place to escape from the outside world and enjoy the magic that is unfolding on stage.

Considered one of the finest and most successful works composed by Franco Micalizzi. A 500 limited-edition LP which includes two tracks never before released on vinyl, a reworked painted lettering title designed by Luca Barcellona, and extensive liner notes by Los Angeles'RendezvousDJ/film event founder, and Four Flies collaborator, Alfonso Carrillo: "A film score that was quite unheard of in horror - a funk and disco-tinged soundtrack, with a sound reminiscent of a blaxploitation film. Director Ovidio Assonitis'Chi sei(1974, American title:Beyond the Door) offered horror fans both a familiar sto- ryline and a stylistically unusual score. Recorded in the States, and using American session musicians, Micalizzi created one of horror's most unique soundtracks. He utili- zes soulful lead vocals (sung by Warren Wilson) along with sax and synthesizer, both of which are featured prominently on the score. Along with superb percussion work, this soundtrack features virtuosic musicianship by top session players and easily stands up to the test of time. Clarence Henry Reid, better known under his stage name Blowfly, wrote lot of songs for artists in the soul and funk scene. Hell Yeah’s summer will be all about Passages, a brand new and fantastic album from Quiroga that shows off his unique take on the Neapolitan sound. It is a soothing mix of real musicianship, laid back funk, soul and jazz stylings that wash over you, fill your heart with warmth and take you to a faraway beach where all your worries melt into the ether.

It is 11 years since Walter Del Vecchio’s last album on Cactus Island Recordings and since then he has put out a steady stream of sublime EPs on the likes of his own Really Swing as well as, of course, Hell Yeah. Label boss Marco calls him “a delicate musician” and it’s true that his deft sound is filled with beauty and detail.

A lot of attention is currently on his native Naples scene, but Quiroga doesn’t fit with the usual narrative thanks to his left of centre take on the breezy Mediterranean sounds of the city. This new album features six brand new cuts as well as six of his favourites that have previously been put out Really Swing, and is a fantastic showcase of his sound, with two of the tracks already getting big support from Italian ensemble 291out.

Gentle groove undulations and refrained vocal euphoria define opener Got Your Love, while fat bass twangs and nodding keys light up the jazzy-soul-funk fusion that is Martinica Feelings. Things get even more horizontal and romantic on The Zoist, with its steamy female coos and delicate keys, and North Hollywood Witches is a glorious bit of slow motion boogie with squelching bass and effervescing keys.

Elsewhere there are the lazy tumbles of Non Dire Notte, which is awash with acid gurgles, while glistening dreamscapes like Citto Di Mare shuffle on lush live drums and new age melodies. There are hippie vibes on Luzhin Defence which evokes sun beams breaking through the clouds, then Chiaia Sunset will melt your heart with its diffuse keys and rippling rhythms and ambient closer Bava casts you adrift into the clouds.

With many other gems along the way, this a perfect summer album that will temporarily rid you of whatever problems you may have.
