Deke Tom Dollard - Na You

Deke Tom Dollard

Na You

HOT CASA
07.05.2018

Mindblowing Afro-Soul music from Ivory Coast served up by Deke Tom Dollard, an obscure artist who only recorded two albums in 1979 and 1981 but who created an original funky fusion with Bété langage. A Selection of four amazing tracks recorded in Abidjan on two different records label called War Records and As Records.

The music here is a mixture of Funk with heavy basslines, traditional percussions, funky guitar riffs, nice horns section and lyrics in Beté. The song Demonde' is inspired by harmonies of the famous Dance to the Drummer Beat' by Herman Kelly.

Those two rare records were found by Afrobrazilero (aka Djamel Hammadi) and never appeared on the vinyl market. It's almost impossible to have infos about this singer and composer neither the musicians involved in the recording sessions. Most of the traces of the recording session were lost by the labels we licensed the tracks with.

Unique, pressed on a deluxe vinyl, remastered by The Carvery, this very Funky album is a must have for all the Afro Funk lovers!

Tommy Stewart & Bridge - Mukatsuku Presents First Time On A 45 Classics Volume 2

Seems strange that Tommy Stewart's seminal rare groove funk anthem 'Bump And Hustle Music' has never had a 45 release but Mukatsuku has set out to re address this issue with volume 2 of their First Time On A 45 Classics series. On the flipside we find the sublime version of Stella ' from Bridge via the originally unreleased album 'Crying For Love' recorded in Boulder, Colorado in 1981. First Experience reissued that album in 1999 but this is the first time 'Stella' written by Paul Tillman Smith has been made available as a 45

Lee Moore - Do You Feel Like A Party (rare Singles - Memphis 1979 - 1984)

Arkansas native, Lee Moore moved to Memphis in 1975 with only one goal in mind: to make it big in the music industry and to release music that would be played in New York, L.A and everywhere in between.

As a singer and songwriter Lee Moore spent the 1980s collaborating in Memphis with the best of the best session musicians and vocalists from labels like Volt and Stax Records to record and release futuristic boogie, soul, and funk. Lee Moore unfortunately never got close to reach his goals of fame and fortune.

Past Due have taken the welcome liberty of repressing this monster slice of Disco-Soul from Moore's catalogue for us all to enjoy and spin on today's dance-floors. 'Do you feel like party' is a rare early
80's jam from the man and features all the hallmarks of his unique sound and style. This DLP features every (incredibly rare) single and 12' that Lee produced under his name and different monikers. Essential Boogie business!

Lee Dodou & The Polyversal Souls - Basa Basa

As the lead singer of George Darko's legendary Burger-Highlife hit-band, Lee Dodou became the number one voice of 80's Highlife. Born in Kumasi, the epicenter of Ghanaian Highlife, he came to Berlin in the late 70's - by then the uprising epicenter of Burger-Highlife - to work as a back-up-singer for Pat Thomas. After joining and leaving Georg Darko and running his own band "Kantata", he stopped releasing music in the early 90's. Now, Philophon is proud to present new recordings of his soulful genius to the world of 2018.

Basa Basa is a song in the classic "concert party" style, as it was played in the glorious 60's. After a firey horn introduction Lee takes over in that funny and entertaining manner typical for "concert party" music. Buzz Duncker joins Lee's phrases with some gentle clarinet. Highlife at its best!

Sahara Akwantuo is anything but a classic: it's the start of a kind of philophonic Highlife, labeled as Kraut-Life. Ghanaian love of life meets German romantic melancholy. Happy rhythms meet mysterious synth landscapes. Eternal summertime and mangos are meeting a wet winter world and roast apples. Kraut-Life at its best!

Nona Hendryx & Soul Clap - Keep Funkin

We (Soul Clap) first connected with Nona Hendryx through our work with George Clinton, Sa'd "the Hourchild" Ali and Chuck "Da Fonk" Fishman. She wrote and sang the single "Shine" from our last album. That experience left us all wanting to collaborate more, so we teamed up with Morgan Wiley from Midnight Magic and all got in the studio to producing new EP for Soul Clap Records, four tracks of house, soul, jazz and of course THE FUNK.

Lee Dorsey († December 1, 1986) began his career as a lightweight boxer in the early 1950s and moved on to become an influential African American pop and R&B singer during the 1960s.

His successful period began when he met songwriter and record producer Allen Toussaint with whom he recorded several songs like Ya Ya', Working In The Coalmine', Ride Your Pony' and many more which all charted in the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart.

In 1970 Dorsey recorded the Yes We Can album again with Allen Toussaint together with the support band The Meters. Several of the songs were covered by major artists who scored hits with them later that decade, Yes We Can' by The Pointer Sisters and Sneakin' Sally Thru The Alley' by Robert Palmer. The other songs are straight up funky tracks and have a variety of styles and sounds. Included are the protest soul recording Who's Gonna' Help Brother Get Further' and the somewhat hilarious comedy song Would You'. All in all it stands as a great soul album for that time.

The Music On Vinyl edition is pressed on green vinyl and is available in a limited run of 1.000 individually numbered copies, including an insert with song lyrics.

DETROIT RISING: A COSMIC JAZZ FUNK ADVENTURE—an unprecedented project created by universally respected musicians, including current and original members of the archetypal funk band Parliament-Funkadelic, along with a selection of world class talent from across the country—is going to bring a new style of funk to audiences this spring.

The hybrid jazz-funk and R&B-flavored album—set for release Friday, March 30 via Down Jazz Records, with physical distribution via the Seattle-based Light In the Attic Records—is a collaboration between highly sought after young P-Funk artists and writers, and is supported by legendary industry veterans, including members that have performed with artists such as Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Mary J. Blige, Herbie Hancock, Bootsy Collins, Bernie Worrell, Theo Parrish and Red Hot Chili Peppers, in addition to their regular work with Parliament-Funkadelic. Key figures in the group also played regularly with late, great artists such as Prince and Miles Davis, among others.

The 10-track album—conceived and overseen by creative producer David Schwartz over the past three years—opens with the saxophone and keys-heavy Lashing Out' followed by Little Bit,' one of multiple tracks that musically stretches out over nine minutes in length. Elsewhere is the soulful Rocket Love,' the sexy ode of Gorgeous' and the groovy unity-themed anthem With Peace & Harmony.' *See below for the full track listing.

DETROIT RISING was recorded live at the world famous Motown affiliated United Sound Studios in Detroit, as well as at renowned studios in New York, Los Angeles, Las Vegas and the Swamp Funk studios in Florida, and mixed and mastered by some of the best engineers in the business, including Richie Beretta (Beyonce), Tatsuya Sato (A Tribe Called Quest) and Mark Santangelo (Childish Gambino). The result is a highly skilled, vibrant and progressive album that combines elements of funk, jazz, soul, hip-hop and rock 'n' roll to capture a live sound that genuinely represents the next best thing to having the full band performing live in front of an audience.

Featured on DETROIT RISING are United Sound musicians guitarist DuminieDeporres (Theo Parrish) and bassist Kern Brantley (Lady Gaga, Beyonce) and P-Funk musicians Gabe Gonzalez (drums), Danny Bedrosian (piano, keys, moog, vocals and current young Parliament-Funkadelic synth leader), DeWayne Blackbyrd' McKnight (guitar/has also played with Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Bootsy Collins), Lige Curry (bass), Greg Thomas (saxophone, vocals/also played with Bootsy Collins), Benjamin Benzel' Cowan (drums and son of P-Funk trumpet player Benny Cowan), Tonysha Nelson (vocals and granddaughter of George Clinton) and Steve Boyd (vocals), along with special guest vocalist Sue Ann Carwell (Prince, Parliament-Funkadelic).

After years of honing their performance skills on worldwide stages, the current touring musicians of DETROIT RISING now take center stage, performing original compositions that shine a light on the true extent of their talent and creativity.

Imarhan - Temet

Imarhan

Temet

12inchSLANG50135LP
CITY SLANG
23.02.2018

When Imarhan released their self-titled debut album in 2016, they stepped into a genre already flooded with talent and exposure, but still managed to rise to the top and be heralded as the new wave Of Tuareg music . It is with much anticipation that the band from Tamanrasset, Algeria have announced the details of their second album Temet, due out February 26 on City Slang.

Temet is a huge leap forward in production, as well as creatively for Imarhan. Whereas their debut was anchored in the meditative Desert Blues tradition, Temet eclipses such notions, finding bounce and drive by stirring their sound with funk, fuzz, disco and rock. This is not a novel concept to the band, as anyone who has seen them play will attest. Imarhan's experience as a touring band has reinforced the focus and meaning behind their music.

With Temet, Imarhan have firmly established themselves as a band to reckon with. Rather than being distracted by meddling around with big producers or famous guests, they've focused this release on their inherent strength of songwriting, using the eternal bonds in their community, families and friendships as a blueprint not only for an amazing standalone album, but as a reference for generations to come. We hope that Imarhan will allow the younger generation to become aware of the fundamental importance of friendship. As long as someone is by your side supporting you, asking for your friendship, what more could you want out of life You will want for nothing.'

Benny Golson - Im Always Dancin To The Music ( Special Disco Version)

Philadelphian Jazz legend Benny Golson has had a long and storied career, he's played with luminaries such as John Coltrane, Dizzy Gillespie and Art Blakey just to mention a small handful. Obviously his credentials are rock solid and his skills as a tenor sax legend are undisputed.
'I'm always dancin' to the music' from 1978 is taken from Benny's LP of the same name. Released on the mighty Columbia imprint as a mono & stereo promo-only white label it's status among underground soul, funk & jazz aficionados is heavyweight, a true 'rare groove' indeed. Produced by George Butler (whose credentials are no less than impressive!) this one has been a hugely popular dance record that has never been easy to track down in 12" form, often topping 'most expensive' record lists it's a record that certainly won't appear in your local second hand spot anytime soon.
Due to it's scarcity and the fact that 'I'm always dancin' to the music' is such a stellar, uplifting piece of jazz-funk-disco goodness it's no surprise that the bootleggers have tried their hand at replicating this masterful release, often resulting in some fairly shoddy facsimiles. Fear not, this beautiful, legit repress comes to you via the combined forces of Above Board distribution and Sony Music, utilising their superior and original master sources and lovingly remastered and repressed just as the 1978 promo 12" was released. No messing around here.
Essential, rare and beautiful - Another amazing nugget from the vaults!

In 1967 he entered a studio with several friends to cut his rst solo album, Soul Drums'. The album was critically acclaimed upon its initial release, only to reach mythical proportions once being rediscovered by DJs and hip-hop producers years later, when it became one of the most sought-after drum LPs among vinyl collectors. Soul Drums' is now available on vinyl for the rst time in years, along with an entire bonus LP comprising Purdie's long-lost follow-up LP Alexander's Rag Time Band', which was never given a proper release. Reissue of great 2005 compilation.
A really wonderful compilation of some of the hardest, most pounding a righteous soul ever recorded, geared to be a sort of unofficial soundtrack to the Black Panther movement of the late 60s and early 70s! It's a proud mix of both longstanding hard soul and funk favorites and more obscure cuts alike, including "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" by Gil Scott-Heron, "Heritage Of A Black Man" by Sam Dees, "Panther" by the Last Poets, "Right On" by Sons Of Slum, "Be Black" by Grady Tate, "You're The Man" by Marvin Gaye, "Ghetto Reality" by James Brown, "Ghetto Child" by Curtis Mayfield, "Won't Bleed Me" by Melvin Van Peebles, "Do You Remember Malcolm" by Miriam Makeeba" and lots more. 19 cuts in all - with a really nice booklet of photos, notes, an essay, biographical details and more, complete in both English and German. A really hard, really tight batch of great songs - and a huge treat to have rounded up on one set!

During the late 1960s the Afro-American struggle for civil rights, equality and freedom led to 'Black Power' slogans and the Black Panther Party was born to take on those issues in a radical way. Since the late 1960s the lyrics of numerous soul, funk, reggae and hiphop songs had been inspired by the struggle of the Black Panthers. The two-volume anthology "Black & Proud" documents political charged Afro-American pop music through four decades of some of the hardest, most pounding righteous soul: from the gospel-informed soul of Sam Dees, Syl Johnson, Marlena Shaw and the Staple Singers, through Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye or Gil Scott-Herons social conscious funk anthems, to the fierce rap of the Last Poets, Chuck D and the Asian Dub Foundation.

We can think of fewer things more Spanish than the works of Alfonso Carlos Santisteban.

He was an anarchic genius, he was scorned on, or worst, ignored. Talent and necessity as well as geniality and the most prosaic worldliness collided in his persona.

If we can blame Santisteban for anything it would be for the way he lived and breathed music. A tireless Spanish music workaholic, he made no differences between copla, rumba, pop or soul and didn't mind if it was for Bambino, La Polaca, Mara Lasso, Calibre 38, Ellas or Mila. A sincere devotee of jazz and immediately seduced by bossa and by cinematographic music, his full works, full of inevitable flaunts as well as moments of geniality, can be critiqued for negligence and an unfinished sense of accomplishment but at the same time his panoramic view and daring musical vision, sometimes just as reckless as accurate, was evident and has made his work endurable several decades later.

Spanish Moog, an album Adarce Records has the pleasure to present, is one of those strange and almost invisible musical milestones that our man portrayed in Italy.

Just as he wrote in his autobiography, in 1973 and thanks to the help of José Antonio de La Loma, he met two of the capos of the most important film music publishing empire in Italy, Giuseppe Campi and Giuseppe Giachi. They were about to open a C.A.M. (Creazione Artistiche Musicale) delegation in Madrid so they could start building their business in the most exciting times for Spanish film industry. The company started by signing two Spanish composers: our man, and Waldo de Los Ríos.

Deception and frustration would come soon. Apart from a large number of small (or more like embarrassing) film scores, Santisteban published five library albums - catalogues of fragments and music pieces offered on a menu and sold afterwards to both co-producers as well as film producers - up until 1975 for C.A.M.: Ambiente e Folklore, Rinascimenti, Night Club, Situazione per Orchestra and this one, Spanish Moog.

Five of the songs included (Jugando al toro, Nuestro Ayer, Gitanos, Torremolinos Soul and Todo ha sido un sueño) were originally recorded by Santisteban and Rafael Ferro for the album Flamenco Pop (Sintonía, 1969), and three more (Zorongo, Nuestro ayer and Tierra mojada) were originally meant for Sabor a fresa' (Belter, 1971) by La Nueva Banda de Santisteban.

Beyond the supposed editorial filibusterism what is left is a wonderful festival of grooves and beats, an omnipresent Moog, Wah Wah and 'cañi' soul blend in Torremolinos soul'.
Dreamy melancholy, fuzz and southern tocuh in Tierra mojada', impeccable arabesque beats in the steadfast Zorongo', funk and folklore sown tight in Noche en Marbella' and pure space Blaxploitation in Tute de Reyes'...

As like other pioneers and talented adventurers in our country, Alfonso Carlos Santisteban would collide inevitably with a time already lost in the annals of history. We cannot think of a better way to resume his works and his person than the sentence he used to open his autobiography:

...I speak with the authority given to me by failure...'
