Aurora Borealis is proud to announce the release of the stunning new album from Jarboe and Helen Money.
Jarboe is a famed vocalist, musician and performer, who came to prominence as co-front and co-writer in SWANS. In addition to her X solo albums, she has notably worked with Neurosis as well as many other legends such as Blixa Bargeld.
Helen Money is the nomme de guerre of cellist Alison Chesley. In addition to working with Mono, Anthrax and Russian Circles, she has toured with Joe Lally and Shellac among others, and released her third album 'Arriving Angels' on respected metal label Profound Lore in 2013.
Legend of underground music Jarboe joins forces with visionary cellist Helen Money (aka Alison Chesley) to create what is probably the most beautiful release in the label's history.
While still a "heavy" record in many ways, Chesley's cello looming massive and distorted over much of the proceedings, there are moments of transcendent beauty with Jarboe's ethereal vocal and piano work soaring above the drones, reaching for the beyond.
Working together and separately on the compositions, the album comes together as a seamless whole under the mastering of Kris Force, with moments of sparse beauty mirrored by howling squawls of intensity. This is a very human record, organic, the voice of Jarboe and the many textured strings of Chesley's cello combining with an earthy depth but reaching for the stars.

Phil Julian - electronics The donation by Kevin Drumm to Phil Julian of a Hewlett Packard test tone generator (to avoid excess baggage charges) caught the curiosity of Dale Cornish. With Cornish and Julian renowned for their own releases, for a variety of labels including The Tapeworm, this chance bonding over former NASA technical equipment has led to their first collaboration.

Highly anticipated and absolutely superb new album from legendary English band The Popguns! Purveyors of heartfelt, uncomplicated pop music, carried by melodies and vocals that go straight to the heart, the group's debut single 'Landslide' in 1989 was voted into John Peel's Festive 50 and a rush of brilliant singles and albums over the next six years assured the band a well-deserved place in pop history. Recently the four original members reformed along with a new drummer and backing singer and this year has seen them play to enthusiastic audiences in London, Paris, Berlin, New York, and the prestigious Indietracks Festival. The first Popguns album since 1996, 'Pop Fiction' is a truly magnificent return. Epic album opener 'City Lights' begins with a chiming guitar intro that builds into dreamy vocals telling a tale of misplaced affections and the alluring lights of the big, bad city, accompanied by some especially dazzling melodies. Meanwhile, 'If You Ever Change Your Mind' is a classic three-minute power pop tune with a wicked hook and a little twist in the tail. The song was inspired in part by an episode of the Danish political drama 'Borgen' and is a stunning showcase for the incomparable vocals of Wendy Pickles. The album continues with the immediate pop hit 'Lovejunky' which was released earlier this year as a limited red vinyl 7" single. It's a glorious song with soaring vocals, driving guitars, an insanely catchy chorus, and marvelous harmonies. Next, a long acoustic intro for 'Still Waiting For The Winter' showcases dual female vocals before the rest of the 'Guns arrive for a reflective journey through a vignette of Popgun nights out on the Brighton seafront. The song references the band's second single and live favorite 'Waiting For The Winter' from 1989, giving long-time fans even more to smile about. 'Alfa Romeo' is a single contender inspired by the fascinating story of American trumpeter Chet Baker, and the mood of the song perfectly fits the romantic image of the unimaginably cool Baker in his Alfa Romeo on the boulevards of San Francisco, Paris and Rome. Side two of the album opens with the slow burner 'Out of Sight' with its tom-tom intro providing the base for some ethereal feedback guitar and gorgeous layered vocals. It's an altogether different side to The Popguns as they sink into the divine sound of a long distance love affair quietly beating on a rainy Wednesday night. This segues into the sparse backing track of 'Not Your Night Tonight', which lets Wendy's voice be heard in its full beauty with lyrical shades of Lou Reed and Bob Dylan and some beautifully twinkling keyboards. 'Leaning on the Backline' is a proper up-tempo indie guitar track and a nostalgic look back to the late 80s and the people and places around the band at that time, while 'Something Going On' sits perfectly beside any track from that time period as a classic Popguns song with Wendy's vocal delivery leaving no doubt that this is still someone not to be messed with! Finally, 'I'll See You Later' is a celebratory sign off to the album with The Popguns getting as close to rock as they probably ever will with some solid guitar riffs. Utterly accomplished and bursting with confidence, 'Pop Fiction' is that great pop record The Popguns always promised when they formed 25 years ago and an absolutely spectacular return for the band. Pop perfection indeed!

Chandos follow on from Greys and Speedy Ortiz on Carpark with a more guitar based heavy sound, this time bringing to mind the likes of At The Drive In and Japandroids

Rats In Your Bed's short but sweet song structures mix Chandos' pop sensibility with dread and urgency, creating a tense energy that gives the group a sound they feel they can call their own. The Boston-based group honed its craft in the local house show scene bands like Speedy Ortiz, Grass is Green, and Guerilla Toss also call home.While this is not the trio's first release, it is the first of this fashion. The band's first two self-recorded EPs were self-released on tape. 'While the DIY approach was a great and fulfilling process, we felt the sound we developed needed a boost in quality,' says drummer Julian Moore, who also plays with Sneeze. The band intends to reach a wider audience with a higher fidelity, but not too high. 'It's definitely a pretty dirty sounding record,' according to bassist Sean Tracy. 'It's dirty, but more so that it sounds aggressive and tight, it's not totally blown out by any means. Between the guitar and bass, there's enough distortion to go around for everyone.'For Chandos' first studio sessions, they teamed up with engineer Ryan Stack of Format Audio (Now, Now; The World Is...) where they recorded the instruments over a two day span. Vocals were finished in Chandos' practice space/makeshift studio. The result is a record of dissonant, fast-paced, anxiety-filled pop songs containing endless drum fills, distorted strings, and vocals that teeter on the edge of frustration and desperation.

Formed in the spring of 2011, roommates Sean Tracy, Julian Moore, and Dan Coulson began playing music together in a small Allston, Mass. bedroom. Over the course of several months, the trio turned their half-witted beer-fueled jam sessions into fully fleshed-out songs. With their similar upbringings in the Massachusetts and New Hampshire local music scenes, the three's fast paced and up-tempo writing style came naturally. The trio established themselves in the local Boston music scene as a weekend usual while releasing two EPs as Chandeliers, Big Shot Weekend, and Monday. Newly christened as Chandos, the band has just finished recording its debut LP, which will be released by Carpark winter 2015.

It's not often you come across an artist you can genuinely refer to as a 'cult legend', but Vashti Bunyan is truly that. A full 35 years on from her only previous album, the singer returns with her first new solo work, a breathtakingly beautiful album.

Far from being simply some kind of appendage tacked onto the end of an amazing story and a past classic, 'Lookaftering' is a fully beautiful album in its own right. Produced by fellow Edinburgh resident Max Richter (whose 'Blue notebooks' album was released on FatCat's 130701 imprint in 2004) - who also co-arranged with Vashti, it's a rich, beautifully arranged and stirring album. Developing gradually and organically - with work initially taking place between Max and Vashti's homes, and then at various studios in Edinburgh, London and Glasgow - 'Lookaftering' is anchored around Vashti's voice and picked acoustic guitar, and Max's piano playing and co-arranging. Its instrumentation includes a string quartet, oboe, harp, French horn, recorder, flute, hammer dulcimer, glasses, harmonium, and Rhodes piano, and it features contributions from Joanna Newsom, Devendra Banhart, Adem, Adam Pierce (Mice Parade), Robert Kirby (Nick Drake / etc.), Otto Hauser and Kevin Barker (Espers / Currituck County)

As well as a neat balance between gentle, sparse songs and heavier, more orchestrated numbers, there is a beautiful play between the lush instrumental arrangements and the incredibly intimate, in-your-ear presence of Vashti's voice. There's a real honesty to the album - from the fragile intimacy of the vocal itself to the stories it weaves. Just as 'Diamond Day' was a very pure document of a journey, 'Lookaftering' is similarly based on stories taken directly from lived experience (the death of a brother; the joys / fears of motherhood; the tension between freedom / commitment and travel / domesticity). There's also a great integrity forged from the cohesiveness between lyrical content and musical form (the gentle rolling and pitching of the melodies on 'Same But Different'; the vocal roundelay on 'Here Before'; the ice-shiver of dulcimer on 'Turning Backs'). The album title itself, a personalised word that describes the role of 'taking care of someone - human or animal - or even something that needs to be done, that needs lookaftering.'

Mit "Man On The Run" veröffentlicht die englische Alternative-Rockband Bush am 17. Oktober ein neues Studioalbum. Mit dem Longplayer, der u.a. die Single "The Only Way Out" enthält, gibt die Formation um Sänger und Frontmann Gavin Rossdale, ihren Einstand bei Sony Music. Die Aufnahmen fanden in der Besetzung Rossdale (Gesang, Gitarre), Chris Traynor (Gitarre), Corey Britz (Bass) und Robin Goodridge (Drums) unter der Regie von Grammy-Preisträger Nick Raskulinecz (Mastodon, Deftones, Foo Fighters, Alice In Chains) in Dave Grohls Studio 606 im kalifornischen Northridge statt.

A single continuous 54 minute excursion into the netherworld of the audio spectrum, 'Trouble' is neither ambient nor drone but a more complex investigation into the deep recesses of sound. One which discreetly works itself into the mind of a listener willing to invest in the path laid out in this extremely subtle, beautiful and exceptional release.

This is Mamiffer's first solo release since 2011's 'Mare Decendrii'. The
line up for this incarnation of Mamiffer consists of the core duo of Faith Coloccia and Aaron Turner (Isis etc..).

Nazoranai comprises three gentleman, three friends and three fans of each others creative output. 'the most painful time happens only once has it arrived already..' is the second release from Nazoranai, a power proposition made up of three sound/song heavyweights: Haino Keiji, Oren Ambarchi and Stephen O'Malley (no introductions necessary, intimidation checked in at the door).

Recorded by Chris Fullard at CCSO, Birmingham 9th July 2013 'the most painful time...' expands the trio's devastating explorations of improvised rock based shapes. The opening track 'you should look closely those shattered spells never attaining embodiment as prayer they are born here again you should look closely those shattered spells never attaining embodiment as prayer they are born here again' hurtles the listener straight in the abyss with an epic 18 + minutes off apocalyptic free rock. This is music on the threshold, a searing landscape where soaring guitars circle amongst a pounding minimal tribal rhythm. 'will not follow your hoax called history' lurches out at the listener offering a hand as a guide for this invented netherworld. The multi limbed 'who is making the time rot' documents our hosts in absolute freeform mode, wildly rummaging the remains of exploded structure. Finally the title track swings the pendulum back to earth in the guise of structure, base, rhythm and song.

Hovering between annihilation and brutality 'the most painful time happens only once has it arrived already..' is a sonic sinkhole where the unrestrained improvised peaks are indelibly stamped with the unique traits deployed by these three titians of rock and experimentation.

Wenn Dave Grohl etwas anpackt, kann man immer davon ausgehen, dass etwas Magisches dabei herauskommt. Sonic Highways , das neue Album seiner Foo Fighters, ist eine Liebeserklärung an die amerikanische Musikgeschichte eine vertonte Reise quer durch die USA. Jeder einzelne der acht neuen Songs wurde in einer anderen Stadt von Butch Vig produziert. Grohl und seine Bandkollegen Taylor Hawkins, Nate Mendel, Chris Shiflett und Pat Smear wollten so das Energielevel hoch halten und jedem Stück den persönlichen Stempel des jeweiligen Aufnahmeortes aufdrücken. Dabei wurde die Band stets von einem Kamerateam begleitet, das die Studiosessions für die Nachwelt in einer acht Folgen umfassenden HBO-Serie festhielt, die auf den gleichen Namen wie das neue Album hört. Die Platte und die Dokumentation, die am 17. Oktober ihre US-Premiere im TV feiert, gehen eine einmalige Synergie ein, die es Dave Grohl erlaubte, das Schreiben seiner Songtexte immer genau ans Ende eines Tages zu legen, um sämtliche Erfahrungen in die Lyrics einfließen lassen zu können. Blending the words and wisdom of visual artist David Shrigley with the whipsmart musicianship of songwriter and Arab Strap co-founder Malcolm Middleton, the pair's absurd wit and stark delivery is perfectly captured on 'Music And Words' - a special collaboration album that started out wrong but ended up just right.'I misinterpreted the meaning of David's words so created a certain style of music to accompany the wrong themes,' admits Middleton of the album's non-existent narrative. 'I took one song 'Sunday Morning' to be a scathing attack on the pomp and arrogance of religion, only to be informed that it's just about willies and was recorded on a Sunday morning. It makes for an interesting record though'.Featuring the vocals and mimicry talent of comic actor Gavin Mitchell, the transatlantic tones of Californian friend Scott Vermeire, actor Bridget McCann and David Shrigley himself, the album was born in lieu of payment after Shrigley created artwork for Middleton's 'A Brighter Beat' album 'I loved all the music Malcolm made,' says Shrigley. 'We have similar sensibilities; we're both into darkness, pathos, despair; existential things. It was just what I wanted, even though I didn't really know what I wanted.''Story Time' is the first earful from the album and boasts humour as black as the lines of Shrigley's drawings. 'It's the song that started it all,' Middleton recalls. 'Funny, disturbing, and then a bit more disturbing. It's a beautiful song, not just a cheap shock,' he says, affirming the album's subjective nature. Nottingham's Sleaford Mods are a duo that need little introduction, having fiercely penetrated people's consciousness on a large scale with their sixth album Austerity Dogs in 2013.

Since then they've garnered critical acclaim with their subsequent work and now they're joining forces with Ipecac Recordings to release a physical version of their previously released digital compilation Chubbed Up, which shall be released on October 28th. This version will include three previously unreleased tracks "The Committee", "Bring Out The Canons," and "Fear Of Anarchy" - check out the full track list below.


Sleaford Mods started out sometime during 2006 whilst Jason Williamson was living in Nottingham. Born out of part frustration and part accident, it quickly found its feet as an aggressive verbal onslaught on all that is contrived and connected to the day-to-day hammer of low paid employment and domestic siutations arising from that trap. After a year of working ideas out in both the studio and in live performances, Williamson moved south and took the cause to London for a couple of years and trod the boards there for a couple of years, before returning to Nottingham in 2009.
Soon after that return he met Andrew Fearn and the Sleaford Mods became a duo. Fearn's first work was on the production of 'Wank' - the Mods' fifth CDr album. Soon after that started stalking the stage and studio with Williamson. Andrew's involvement meant that Jason was now able to stop creating the samples and loops that littered the early recordings and concentrate on the lyrics, whilst Andrew created numerous tunes for Jason to vent his spleen over.

Just after the release of 'Wank' the duo were invited to play a three day festival curated by Nottingham's Rammel Club. During that weekend a working relationship with Nottingham's abstract-punk Harbinger Sound label was formed. A relationship which - a year later - resulted in the release of the 'Austerity Dogs' vinyl album. This release would be followed by numerous shows around the UK and Europe, including further festival appearances. As word- of-mouth praise for the album slowly spread out and onto the record-buying publics' radar, 'Austerity Dogs' soon sold out of its intial run of 300 copies and has gone one to, as of today, a fourth pressing of the vinyl edition and a CD version was also released. Rave reviews would start to appear in magazines as diverse as The Wire and Uncut, along with interviews being published both on paper and on-line, both here and abroad. The album featured, and topped, many writers polls for the best records of 2013.

It was great to realise that together we had a band sound without having to contrive it.'In the way bands such as Deerhoof are revered for their unusual sonic approach, The Drink celebrate beauty in oddness through their use of bold syncopated rhythms, strange time signatures and complex structures, via a love of artists from Joanna Newsom to The Breeders and Captain Beefheart. Nazoranai comprises three gentleman, three friends and three fans of each others creative output. The opening track 'you should look closely those shattered spells never attaining embodiment as prayer they are born here again you should look closely those shattered spells never attaining embodiment as prayer they are born here again' hurtles the listener straight in the abyss with an epic 18 + minutes off apocalyptic free rock. This is music on the threshold, a searing landscape where soaring guitars circle amongst a pounding minimal tribal rhythm. 'will not follow your hoax called history' lurches out at the listener offering a hand as a guide for this invented netherworld. The multi limbed 'who is making the time rot' documents our hosts in absolute freeform mode, wildly rummaging the remains of exploded structure. Finally the title track swings the pendulum back to earth in the guise of structure, base, rhythm and song.

Audrea Lim and Gabriel Sedgwick are creators of sparsely inhabited pop-dramas, mini epics in chorus and reverb reflected through a chromium camera obscura.
