Highly anticipated new release from adored Danish indie purists Northern Portrait!
The band debuted in 2008 with two very well received EPs—'The Fallen Aristocracy' and 'Napoleon Sweetheart'—both of which sold out almost instantly upon release. The band's consummate debut album 'Criminal Art Lovers' enjoyed widespread international acclaim in 2010 including numerous appearances on year-end favorite lists, and the 'Life Returns To Normal' 7' single on elegant clear vinyl was released later that same year.
Northern Portrait has charmed live audiences in Denmark, England, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and USA over the years, including performances at the Indietracks Festival and popfests in Copenhagen, Limoges, Madrid and San Francisco.
The fantastic new 'Pretty Decent Swimmers' EP is available on deluxe 10' color vinyl and digital formats, and features the first new recordings from the band in over two years.
Lead track 'Happy Nice Day' is three and a half minutes of straightforward power pop inspired by Swedish pop idols The Wannadies. It is an ode to the joys of traveling and casual meetings in hotels, airports and pen friend sections from Tokyo to Stockholm to Hamburg to Nice and beyond.
Meanwhile, 'Greetings From Paris' explores the difficulty in admitting when reality doesn't exactly match expectations and ambitions. It's a superb slice of Nordic guitar pop that builds to an especially melodic conclusion.
Side two opens with the playful and jaunty 'Bon Voyage!', a song about short term holiday attractions gone wrong ... but with a slight twist. Musically sunny and shimmering, the song is a guitar driven sunbath and pool dive all in one. Bon voyage indeed!
Powerful and jangly, closing track 'I Feel Even Better' is an escapist's dream come true. Lyrical elements from the Cheers theme song in reverse accentuate the desire to get away, while autoharp and 12-string guitar add a bright sparkle to the general bounciness of the song.
'Pretty Decent Swimmers' is pressed on transparent swimming pool blue vinyl and limited to 1000 hand-numbered copies in a luxurious sleeve featuring fashionable Los Angeles water ballet troupe Aqualillies on the cover.

Finland's finest are back with something truly epic. Where K-X-P's 2010 debut was an exercise in Kraut-tronica, K-X-P II finds the band unleashing their inner pop deviance. This is an album full of rock 'n' roll shamanism, glam-punk madness, grinding dance music, electronic Motörhead techno - and a bit of Krautrock too.

K-X-P comprises frontman Timo Kaukolampi (electronics, vocals and the 'K' in the band's name) plus Tuomo Puranen (bass, keyboards and the 'P' in the band's name) and drummers Tomi Leppänen and Anssi Nykänen (the 'X' - for the mystery). While Tomi is a permanent feature of the band and 2 drummer line-up is a studio only affair- it has been known to happen live on rare occasions. Born from the ashes of seminal Finnish groups Op:l Bastards and And The Lefthanded. the band began with a manifesto: 'K-X-P started after I wanted to stop playing in bands,' says Timo, frontman. 'It's the antidote to normal bands. Its an anti-band"

Their latest album is music from a place of perfectionism, fed by some dark times in Timo's life. 'I've recently experienced some personal losses - big ones - and so though it might seem like a really long time between albums, but in my actual life it's more like a split second,' he says.

The record was written in Berlin and completed in Helsinki. Timo travelled to the German capital in search of solitude. 'In Berlin I was totally alone, a nobody in the shadows of this city. It offered new challenges for me to break through; a jungle of concrete and, the antithesis of myself: absolute hedonism.' he says. The band recorded in converted cinemas and traditional studios, surrounding themselves with vintage equipment, analogue electronics and - for the first time - analog step sequencers.

Before K-X-P, Timo worked in the Xenomania pop factory, where he composed for - among others - Annie, who appears as a guest vocalist on 'K-X-P II'. This time around, he's been more willing to let his natural ability with a pop hook inform his work with K-X-P. 'Especially for this record, these 'pop' lines/hooks are just coming up - and I can't act like it is something that I have done intentionally,' he says. 'I felt that rhythm of this record needed to be different. More in and out, faster moves. Shorter songs. More punk.'

Most of all, the album is a record for the band that K-X-P grew into on stage. Since releasing their debut album, 'K-X-P' in 2010, the band have come into their own live. 'That's where we unleash our power,' says Kaukolampi. 'Pre first album shows were pretty static and minimal. Now it's totally all over the place, exploding energy. Free jazz, drone, noise, pop, rock.' Timo had an epiphany while watching videos of the band performing and realising he spent most of the show bent over his electronics, 'like some bird of prey feeding on a carcass.' So he created an alter ego, a persona inspired by 'a lunatic occult reverend, a yoga teacher, John Lydon, Freddie Mercury and Rob Halford. And then I had to compose some music for this creature.'

While The Misfits early recordings, devotional chants, P.I.L. and Bad Brains have been added to the band's list of musical influences, lyrical influence still comes from a dreaming place. 'Staring At The Moon' finds Timo imagining the fusion of spiritual consciousness and an animal body- like a 'praying tiger, wolf or minotaur', Magnetic North is inspired by Finland, a place of 'northern lights, polar night and endless summer days; heavy metal, Nokia, drinking, the highest suicide rate in the world...'. Elsewhere, Flags And Crosses is inspired by TImo's father's experiences in World War II, Reel Ghosts is composed from distant voices found on reel-to-reel tape and Dark Satellites has its eyes fixed upwards.

The band will, of course, be stepping out to perform this masterpiece in 2013. 'I feel so good when K-X-P is playing live,' says Timo. 'It's like drug to me. I'm addicted to that noise and everything that surrounds it.'

Popstrangers are Joel Flyger, Adam Page and David Larson, three native New Zealanders who make 'pop' music that's hard-driving, punk-influenced and sonically inimitable. After releasing several singles on fabled New Zealand label Flying Nun, the band arrives with their debut album Antipodes . Recorded in the basement of a 1930's dancehall, Popstrangers' first full-length features dissonant, claustrophobic melodies, anchored by the languid affectations of Flyger's vocals, that bring a vintage feel to their decidedly contemporary garage rock. Channeling early Radiohead and kiwi indie bands of yore like the Gordons, 3Ds and the Chills, Antipodes further develops the band's nuanced, distorted 'pop' created and cultivated from years spent honing their craft live.

Antipodes begins with a wavering chord from a classic rock organ in 'Jane,' over which the band layers gently oscillating bass, a razor-sharp guitar riff and the faintest hint of a tambourine, until the song rotates on its axis with the introduction of Flyger's shadowy vocals enveloped in noise. Popstrangers revel in this conflict, playing with dynamics and tempo to whip their droning melodies and tightly wound riffs into utter frenzy. Antipodes ' storm breaks for 'Heaven,' a song that contrasts Flyger's moody lyrics about imprisonment and escape with a serotonin hit of snappy guitars and infectious hooks. Drawing the album to a close is seven minutes of slow-burner 'Occasions,' anchored by a murky bassline that eases the album to its end. Antipodes operates within a claustrophobic world of depression, captivity and dark matters of the heart, but Popstrangers anchor their debut LP's hazy gloom with earnest anticipation for contentment.

Eaux are the new project of 3 members of cult British group Sian Alice Group who released two albums and an EP via The Social Registry(Gang Gang Dance, Growing, Pshycic Ills) and toured with the likes of Spiritualized, Deerhunter and Florence and the Machine. Eaux focuses on the more electronic elements that were touched on with SAG using programmed motorik drum machines, samplers, mutliple layers of synth, bass, guitar woven in neatly beneath vocalist Sian Ahern's crystaline vocals. Since their inception early this year the band have taken in shows with Chromatics, Blondes, Teengirl Fantasy, Active Child, Yacht and Walls, and are set to head out on tours round Europe this autumn with Destroyer and Mercury Prize nominated Django Django, as well as a slot at taste maker London festival Nail The Cross which in the past has featured early sets from the likes of The XX, SBTRKT, Actress, Joy Orbison, Hudson Mohawke and Nite Jewell.

For 'Chimerization' Hecker invited the Iranian writer and philosopher Reza Negarestani, to contribute an experimental libretto, 'The Snake, the Goat and the Ladder (A board game for playing chimera)' a script that has been recited by a group of speakers and recorded by Hecker in anechoic and sound-attenuated chambers - rooms designed to minimize the reflections of either sound or electromagnetic waves. Hecker characterizes 'Chimerization' as a concept derived from psychoacoustic investigations on difficult-to-define areas between language and non-language, a process focusing on the decomposition of sound and synthesizing incompatible modalities, surpassing their respective particularities without fusing them, in order to obtain a narration beyond immediate comprehension, which may be deciphered through repeated, 'active' listening.

The Confusional Quartet are Enrico Serotti, Gianni Cuoghi, Lucio Ardito and Marco Bertoni, a four piece experimental band with new wave, avant-garde and post rock influences who have been recording since the late 70s. Having first released their debut album more than three decades ago, they now return with a new,
eponymously entitled full length on Hell Yeah recordings, and accompanied by fabolous artwork by Andrea Amaducci. One of the most recognized Italian bands in the so-called new wave era, the energetic group were never afraid of pioneering new sounds and performing energetic shows (often called the italian Devo), and this new album suggests they have lost
none of their edge having reformed just last year. Across the course of the 11 tracks, the band explores the fusion between synthetic sounds and real drums; fizzing guitar lines and plenty of feedback. It's funky, raw and looks to many different eras and genres all at the same time. The opener 'FuturFunk' (co-written and co-produced with Sir Bob Rifo of The Bloody Beetroots) is just that, dazzling and arresting as it goes.Elsewhere, high energy, dense and gauzy songs like 'Kursaal' rage
and writhe as drums cut in and out and guitars get worked to the max. Pilling layer upon layer of sound, each track is stuffed with contrasting surfaces before being stripped to just a jazzy drenched bassline or funked up lead. Anfang 2012 lieferten die Schotten mit ihrem dritten Album "Have Some Faith In Magic" ein lupenreines, intelligentes Pop-Album ab, das von der Musikpresse wie auch Fans gleichermaßen gefeiert wurde. Herbert Grönemeyer ist der charismatischste Sänger und Texter, den wir im deutschen Pop seit Jahrzehnten besitzen. Groß war mithin die Neugier und Spannung, als er erklärte eine Platte mit englischsprachigen Versionen seiner Songs herauszubringen. Das Ergebnis halten Sie in ihren Händen! Dreizehn Lieder finden sich auf dieser Platte, von dem epochalen Lied auf die Freundschaft "Mensch" ganz am Anfang über das epische "Zum Meer" ("To the Sea") bis zu "Flugzeuge im Bauch", das in der englischen Fassung nunmehr "Airplanes in my head" heisst. Mit am schönsten aber sind die Lieder geworden, die schon im Original in englischer Sprache geschrieben wurden: wie das herzzerreißende Duett "Will I Ever Learn", das er mit Antony Hegarty von Antony and the Johnsons singt.
