Mark Lanegan & Duke Garwood - With Animals

The album's 12 songs are spectral and sinewy, often defined by the spaces in between the sounds. A ghost's whistle weaves itself around a pulsing single note on 'Lonesome Infidel'; 'Feast To Famine's hard luck story floats above a guitar part so strung out and washed with distortion it's become barely recognisable. It's soul music for anyone who's long since left the crossroads.
Over the last decade, Mark Lanegan and Duke Garwood have worked in tangent on 2013's 'Black Pudding' as well as on Lanegan's solo records (Garwood contributed to 2012's 'Blues Funeral' and 2017's 'Gargoyle' after which he toured as part of Lanegan's band). Writing and recording was split between studio collaboration and sharing music between Garwood's home in London and Lanegan's in Los Angeles.
While 'Black Pudding' put Garwood's mercurial guitar centre stage, 'With Animals' is constructed from a different set of tools. Analogue and dust flecked, it sounds like Lanegan and Garwood have been holed up in a 60s recording studio while the apocalypse rages outside. Tracks sit on loops that sounds like they're straight out of 'There's A Riot Goin' On' while sparse melodies nod in the direction of British electronic producers like Burial or Boards Of Canada. Which is not to say it sounds like any of those things - this is a weird world all of their own design.

Blood Orange - Negro Swan 2x12"

Producer, multi-instrumentalist, composer, songwriter and vocalist Devonté Hynes returns with his fourth album as Blood Orange, Negro Swan, released on Domino on August 24, 2018.

Raised in England, Hynes started out as a teenage punk in the UK band Test Icicles before releasing two orchestral acoustic pop records as Lightspeed Champion. In 2011, he released Coastal Grooves, the first of three solo albums under the moniker Blood Orange. His last album, Freetown Sound, was released to critical acclaim in 2016, and saw Hynes defined as one of the foremost musical voices of his time, receiving comparisons to the likes of Kendrick Lamar and D'Angelo for his own searing and soothing personal document of life as a black man in America. He has collaborated with Solange Knowles, Skepta, fka twigs, Carly Rae Jepsen, A$AP Rocky, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Blondie, and many other artists, and was recently one of four artists invited to the Kennedy Center to perform alongside Philip Glass. In addition to his production work, he scored the film Palo Alto, directed by Gia Coppola.

Negro Swan was written and produced by Hynes. Says Hynes:

'My newest album is an exploration into my own and many types of black depression, an honest look at the corners of black existence, and the ongoing anxieties of queer/people of color. A reach back into childhood and modern traumas, and the things we do to get through it all. The underlying thread through each piece on the album is the idea of HOPE, and the lights we can try to turn on within ourselves with a hopefully positive outcome of helping others out of their darkness.'

She Makes War - Brace For Impact

DOGFACE SPLATTER' VINYL

Right now, the world needs a warrior. Town by town and tour by tour, She Makes War has been widening her battle stance and soothing tortured souls with her no holds barred, peaceful protest music. Armed with songs to persuade and words that bite then linger with the sweetest aftertaste, She has a message - wake up world and Brace for Impact.

'People still live in fear of persecution and violence every day for the 'crime' of being themselves,' attests the nom de plume of melodic visualiser, storyteller and creator Laura Kidd. 'With everything that's going on in the world, adopting a brace position to protect ourselves from external forces is more important than ever.'

From broken hearts to broken bones, Laura was given plenty of time for rumination when she broke her right foot moments before supporting The Brian Jonestown Massacre. Tumbling off a darkened stage during soundcheck, adrenaline kicked in and, ever the fighter, the show went on. With barely enough time to visit A&E, a face full of glitter and steely resolve, she performed a slew of summer festival sets and a BBC 6Music Marc Riley session sporting a fetching knee crutch.

'Having my mobility stolen from me was exhausting and depressing. I'd come up with the album title while driving on tour, daydreaming about what it must be like to be in a high-speed car crash - I'd wondered whether there would be time to apologise to my passenger if we got in an accident...it was a bit dark', she recalls. 'After struggling through the summer with that phrase in my mind, then finding it written in the venue toilets at the end of a tour in Brighton, it just had to be the album title.'

She Makes War has received press support from Louder, Clash Magazine, Rock Sound, Line Of Best Fit, DIY, The Quietus, Gigwise and Louder Than War. Singles from her last album 'Direction Of Travel' received national airplay on 6Music (Marc Riley Steve Lamacq, Lauren Laverne, Tom Robinson), XFM (John Kennedy), Kerrang (Alex Baker) and Amazing Radio (Shell Zenner and Jim Gellatly) - in addition she was invited to play a live band session on Marc Riley's 6 Music show. She launched the album with a series of UK headline dates and supported The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Carina Round and The Wave Pictures on tour throughout the rest of the year. Anton Newcombe of BJM calls her "an inspiration" and other industry fans include Tanya Donelly (Belly, ThrowingS Muses) who guested on DOT, Ayse Hassan (Savages), Neil Codling (Suede), Terry Edwards (Tindersticks, PJ Harvey) and comedian Robin Ince.

The Fall - 45 84 89: A Sides

The seventeen songs collected here come from
The Fall's Brix Smith era, aka 'the golden era of Fall
releases'. This is a perfect introduction to the band
and, as legendary critic Robert Christgau said, it's
'The only Fall record any normal person need
own.'

Originally released in 1990, this pressing will be on
white vinyl.

The band's legendary and notorious frontman Mark
E. Smith passed away earlier this year at the age
of 60. The band's output since they formed at the
height of the punk rock movement in Manchester
in 1976 was prolific to say the least. It's hard to be
exact but in their four decades The Fall released
31 studio albums, 5 part-studio / part live albums,
32 live albums, 40 compilations and Mark E. Smith
also released two spoken word albums. Another
high number is that of former members of The
Fall. There were over 60 different band members
over the years. Their high volume of quality work
over the last 40+ years had an enormous influence
which was extolled greatly after his death

Dirty Dishes - Kabinett Von Papen

Shortly before the turn of the year 2017/18, my friend Jan Müller wrote me an e-mail: »Dear Martin, I'll send you the new album of my band ›Dirty Dishes‹ now. The album is titled ›Kabinett Von Papen‹. It is a concept album, which has the third-last government cabinet of the Weimar Republic as a subject. So, please tell me how you see it - whatever your verdict, I'll use it as an incentive to put my mind and body in the service of global pop culture even more so in the future«.

Dirty Dishes is founded in 2005 by Jan »Rasmus Engler« Müller (Tocotronic) and Rasmus »Jan Müller« Engler (MHerrenmagazin, Little Whirls, Ludger) when the two are bored during recording sessions for the second album of their group Das Bierbeben. Immediately, they write two pieces of music (»Bon Giorno«, which has alcohol and drug abuse as a subject, as well as »Drink a Coke«, a Brigitte-Mira-dedicated anthem for the caffeine-containing soft drink), which are released in the same year as a single under the title »Hurra...! Endlich Ferien!« on the label K.i.N.d.V. Two years later, the duo releases their debut album »Tea Is Not Our Cup of Coffee«. Here one can hear the first experimental and more conceptual works such as »Dirty Dishes as Goofy as Asterix«. The following albums (»Mit uns nicht!«, 2009, and »Von der raffinierten Kunst, jemanden in einen Tümpel zu stoßen«, 2013) juxtapose song and experiment. The first pure concept album, including now-permanent members ALEXANDER (Schrottgrenze, Station 17), Guido vom Flockenberg (Back On The Road), Isabella Stellmann (pedagogue) and Zopfus (ByteFM), is »Der Egel vom Tegel - Die kleine Rock-Operette der Dirty Dishes« (2010), followed by »Round about Ignaz Kiechle«(2013). The latter brings together songs that deal with significant events in the life of former Agriculture Minister Kiechle and were recorded freely improvised in just one recording session.

On the now-available »Kabinett Von Papen«, composed in monastic retreat, each piece is named after a minister from Papen's presidential cabinet (1.6.1932-3.12.1932) and represents them tonally and/or lyrically succinct.

Lark/Andrew Weatherall - Can I Colour Your Hair

Care in the Community recordings release a 7" single of Lark's Can I Colour In Your Hair featuring a flip side dub version by renowned DJ and producer Andrew Weatherall, adding to past re-workings of Lark songs by artists such as Scritti Politti's Green Gartside, Erol Alkan and producer Brendan Lynch (Primal Scream).
The label released Lark's first two albums; the 'sharp and clever' (Quietus) debut ,Shop, and the  purely solo effort of song writer and front man Karl Bielik, I Don't Got, which Uncut noted  '...throws up myriad references - Daniel Johnston, Tom Waits' junkyard jazz, early Human League - but the wonky, unsettling world it creates is completely Bielik's own.' (4/5).
Can I Colour In Your Hair dates from the period that formed Lark's debut and was always intended for its own vinyl cut. While the Andrew Weatherall version that followed, a while later, featured in his BBC6 music 6 mix and gained traction in his club sets, the physical record has proved elusive until now.
Can I colour In Your Hair is coinciding with the release Larks next album, The Last Woman,on Standard Lamp Records.

ALBUM FUNNY MAN 'A dark subcurrent of industrial noise runs under raspy vocals punctuated by driving basslines that fuel this idiosyncratic album' - 4/5 MOJO

ALBUM I DON'T GOT (CARE106)Lark are fronted by abstract painter Karl Bielik, who hollers and shrieks his way through these 15 tracks, sometimes resembling Nick Cave's baritone-voiced preacherman ('The Bible Rhymer'), sometimes lurching off into a demented falsetto ('Palucca'), and occasionally sounding like Mark E Smith fronting The Cramps ('The Scream').
His Beefheart-ish backing band maintain a similarly unhinged and studiedly amateurish variety of skronk - all squalling guitars, one-fingered basslines and plinky-plonky Casiotones. It throws up myriad references - Daniel Johnston, Tom Waits' junkyard jazz, early Human League - but the wonky, unsettling world it creates is completely Bielik's own.' John Lewis 4/5 UNCUT

Madonnatron - Mermaids
  • A1: Mermaids
  • AA1: Ich Liebe Dich

Much in the manner a devotional feline will proudly massacre vermin, leaving it's sacrificial remains to fetter your hallway carpet, we bring you Madonnatron. In the space of about 18 months they went from not knowing how to play their instruments to knowing how to play them slightly better (in between doing full time jobs and having babies) and during this time ended up supporting The Moonlandingz on their Autumn 2016 tour, touring with Trashmouth Records and label mates Meatraffle across the UK at the end of 2016, and doing two live sessions for Marc Riley on BBC6. They also played two sold out shows during Independent Venue Week this January - one at the Windmill, Brixton, and the other with The Moonlandingz at Hebden Bridge Trades Club. Now with a new line up, their first two singles 'Headless Children' & 'Tron' have received extensive radio play on BBC6 music via Marc Riley, Gideon Coe & Tom Ravenscroft. They played a successful slot at the Republic of Music's show at the Great Escape Festival this year and will play the Rising Stage at the Green Man Festival in August.
With their eponymously titled debut album due for release on vinyl & digital format on the 28th July, they launch it at the Windmill, Brixton on 29th July.
More shows across the UK to be announced and they are set to tour in early 2018.
"If Madonnatron was an amplifier, it would be a mutha of a Krell beater, a class A with plenty of power in reserve. Better than Led Zeppelin " - Zsa Zsa Sapien of Meatraffle

Tomberlin - At Weddings

Tomberlin

At Weddings

12inchLBJ276LPC1
Saddle Creek
04.12.2018

On her deeply moving debut album At Weddings, Sarah Beth Tomberlin writes with the clarity and wisdom of an artist well beyond her years. Immeasurable space circulates within the album's ten songs, which set Tomberlin's searching voice against lush backdrops of piano and guitar. Like Julien Baker and Sufjan Stevens, she has a knack for transforming the personal into parable. Like Grouper, she has a feel for the transcendent within the ordinary.

Born in Jacksonville, Florida, and now based in Louisville, Kentucky, Tomberlin wrote most of At Weddings while living with her family in southern Illinois during her late teens and early twenties. At 16, she finished her homeschooling curriculum and went to college at a private Christian school she describes, only half-jokingly, as a "cult." By 17, she had dropped out of school, returned home, and begun to face a period of difficult transition in her life. The daughter of a Baptist pastor, Tomberlin found herself questioning not only her faith, but her identity, her purpose, and her place in the world.

"I was working, going to school, and experiencing heavy isolation," Tomberlin says of the time when she first began writing the songs on At Weddings. "It felt monotonous, like endless nothingness. It was a means to get through to the next step of life." In songwriting, Tomberlin found relief and lucidity she had trouble articulating otherwise. When she was 19, she wrote "Tornado" on her parents' piano, and began to develop confidence in her music. A year later, she had written enough songs to fill an album.

Throughout At Weddings, Tomberlin's lyrics yearn for stability and belonging, a near-universal desire among young people learning to define themselves on their own terms for the first time. "I am a tornado with big green eyes and a heartbeat," she sings on "Tornado," her voice stretching to the top of her range. Rich, idiosyncratic imagery — a fly killed with a self-help book, brown paper bags slashed violently open, clouds that weep over a lost love — sidle up to profound realizations about learning to be alive in this world. "To be a woman is to be in pain," Tomberlin notes on "I'm Not Scared." On "A Video Game," she muses, "I wish I was a hero with something beautiful to say."

Tomberlin cites the hymns she grew up singing in church as her greatest musical influence, and while At Weddings in many ways documents the unlearning of her childhood faith, it's easy to hear the reverential quality of sacred music in her songs. "A lot of hymns talk about really crazy stuff — being saved from the depths and the mire, judgment. When you actually realize what you're singing, it becomes really overwhelming," Tomberlin says. "I grew up singing in church. I was still helping to lead worship when I started coming to terms with the realization that I didn't know if I believed. I felt nauseous and shaky reading these words I was singing and feeling their intensity. If I did believe this, how could I sing these words without being scared out of my mind That's what's influenced how I write."

At Weddings is laden with reverence for music itself, for the power it has to heal others and help people navigate their lives. It is a record about learning to love oneself and others without reservation, from a place of deep sincerity — a lifelong challenge whose tribulations Tomberlin articulates beautifully. "My number one goal with my music is for honesty and transparency that helps other people find ways to exist," she says. With At Weddings, this remarkable young songwriter offers up comfort and wonder in equal measure.

"If Fellini, Dali and Captain Kangaroo got together in their teens and ate peyote, this is the album they would have recorded."- Les Claypool All My Kin is the strange and somewhat unbelievable album by an artist called Beanpole. Starving artist must have been their mode of recording as stories of farming, eating, and
disfigured animal-human hybrids course throughout the record. Very little is known about Beanpole, but it is widely recognized by collectors that most of the music originated from the late 1980s and early 1990s. Some sources maintain Beanpole is still active, although evidence remains unsubstantiated. Primus' Les Claypool claims he attempted to release a decade's worth of Beanpole recordings on his Prawn Song label in the '90s. We're told that the tracks were delivered to the mastering studio on worn-out cassette tapes and dusty DATs. As legend has it, when Claypool played the mastered tracks to his distributor, the response from company executives was poor. As a result, Claypool was summarily dismissed from his business relationship with the distribution company, effectively ending his label. For nearly 20 years thereafter, the tracks were to remain forgotten. Fast forward to 2017 when Claypool was touring with Sean Lennon as The Claypool Lennon Delirium. Les played the old, neglected recordings to Sean, who decided that the world was finally ready for Beanpole! Beanpole's All My Kin is a concept album for post-modern America. It chronicles the epic tale of Chicken Boy and his dangerously interrelated family. Years of isolation have resulted in the birth of a child who is part man and part poultry. Despite obvious adoration for their uniquely feathered offspring, having fallen upon hard times they consider the unthinkable: will
Chicken Boy be sacrificed to feed his hungry family

Pip Blom is a phenomenal young indie rock band from Amsterdam that's been making waves in England, a BBC radio darling touring with Franz Ferdinand and The Breeders. Pip Blom is both the name of the band and its leader, a dynamic 21-year-old singer-songwriter-guitarist. Paycheck, the group's new EP, is a roaring, attitude-laden offering that maintains their playfulness and knack for melody that's earned comparisons to Blur and Courtney Barnett.

In 2017, a series of hooky singles Pip uploaded to the internet hit over a million plays, bringing a sudden burst of overseas accolades. The singles sold out quickly, and El Diablo (run by Guided By Voices / Yoko Ono manager) has pressed up just 500 copies of this 10' vinyl. The EP is something of an older sibling to Pip's previous 7's, doubling up on the infectiousness of those early hits but with a bigger crunch. Festival appearances and energetic, gripping live shows around the UK and Europe have solidified the band as a rising star in a new generation of indie guitar bands.

Drahla - Twelve Divisions of The Day
  • 1: Twelve Divisions of the Day
  • 2: Twelve Divisions of the Day ( Black Ribbon Alternate Mix)

Blending wiry, dark post-punk with unpredictable art-rock, Drahla have established themselves as a formidable and distinctive band across their two sold out 7' singles and the 2017 Third Article EP. Formed in late 2015, Drahla quickly found their identity in Yorkshire's fertile music scene with their minimal yet robust bass-heavy sound.

Their reputation as a fervent live act is ever-growing, with the band being asked to share stages with the likes of Parquet Courts, METZ, Ought, Buzzcocks, Hookworms, The Cribs and more. Their Third Article EP, produced by Hookworms' MJ, was released at the end of 2017 on the band's own Blank Ad label followed by their first European tour supporting Metz. Third Article finds the band at their most captivating, with track 'Silk Spirit' exhibiting Luciel's mesmerizing spoken drawl, paired with the steady unrelenting wall of sound from Rob Riggs on bass, and Mike Ainsley on drums. After watching the band's self-made video for 'Silk Spirit', Mike Sniper, founder of Brooklyn independent label Captured Tracks, was immediately hooked. The band signed to Captured Tracks shortly after.

Now, having just completed a tour supporting Ought, the band are releasing their commanding new 7-inch single 'Twelve Divisions of the Day', featuring a B-side remix that strikes with as much fervor as the original but leaves a different bite mark. As they commence a slew of May and June shows, including an invitation to play Robert Smith's Meltdown Festival, the band are poised to take their mark as one of the most visceral and exciting new bands on the scene.

Phantastic Ferniture - Phantastic Ferniture LP

Phantastic Ferniture, the delightfully lightheaded project of Julia
Jacklin, Elizabeth Hughes, Ryan K Brennan and Tom Stephens,
release their self-titled debut album via Transgressive Records.
The mission is obvious: don't overthink it. These artists' shared
want to shake the shackles of their meticulously crafted solo
work to experience a second, giddy adolescence is evident in
the garage-pop perfection introduced today.
I'd gone straight into folk music,' says Jacklin, 'so every
experience I'd had on stage was playing sad music with a
guitar in my hand. I thought, I would love to know what it's like
to make people feel good and dance.'
Phantastic Ferniture's spiritual home may be the garage but
they were born in a bar, specifically the hallowed basement of
Frankie's Pizza in Sydney. One late night in 2014, on Jacklin's
birthday, a group hug manifested amid the pinball machines,
with all ten participants vowing to form a band. 'Only four of us
remembered the next day,' notes Hughes.
United by fern puns and a love of leisurewear, the band met up
whenever schedules would allow, writing songs and playing
smatterings of dates to an increasingly devoted audience.
Eventually it was decreed that this was no side project and an
album should follow. The result is one of the most enjoyable
albums of 2018. 'It feels really good,' Jacklin says with
satisfaction. 'It's like having an alter ego.'
A slice of defiant brilliance that feels effortless in its
execution.' - London In Stereo

OBJETO - Micromundos

The first of two wonderful new full lengths for Polytechnic Youth for the first week in July. This is a debut release on vinyl for Spanish based Jordi Navarra whose musical oeuvre stretches between 'Surf, Hippie / Space Rock and crude electronic music' often different yet coated in tons of reverb and echo for 'it's final catalepsy'! 'Micromundos,' needless to say for PY devotees, concentrates on his cruder electronic soundscapes; incredible often ambient, drone themed pieces that on one hand dip their toes into the revered works of Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Dieter Moebius, and the sky back catalogue whilst equally conjuring up a collision of Spacemen 3 psych meets Wire, early Cabs or Magazine darker more atmospheric, post punk industrial / experimental workouts. Eight abstract, kosmische fuelled pieces that act as an interesting sister release to the label's other July offering, the more overtly 'in-yr-face' synth pop themed Mitra Mitra LP. Two beautiful releases expected to sell out pretty swiftly, and released together first week of July.

My favourite songs on Terry's new album 'I'm Terry' (the band's third record in three years), are Under Reign, it's a creepy one, sandwiched between other new faves The Whip and Crimes. There's a theme of dominance and submission here, but kinda unremarkable and ignorable, like knowing you're enslaved by your streaming service but just gently putting that out of your mind for another week. Terry is domesticity. Terry romances the mundane. This is how romance ekes out a triumph amidst mundanity. That's what Billy Bragg's New England and Squeeze's Up The Junction do. Terry's suburban escapism moment is Ciao Goodbye. Listen to Ciao Goodbye on an arterial road under the yellow streetlights of a weeknight. Terry has never been this beautiful. Terry may never be beautiful again, definitely not on this record. The next song is psycho.
That's what I like about Terry, there are few rules in Terry's world. They seem to make a song out of whatever sounds good to them. I literally don't know what they'll do next. They aren't a genre study. The only stylistic consistency is in their hat wear. I've never been in a band like this. I've been in a band that simultaneously studied genre and also hats. But never only hats. Have you noticed the reggae undercurrent in Terry There is one. This is good. Terry are kinda like Steely Dan or 10cc. Both bands make me queasy after a certain point. Terry probably also make me a bit queasy, singing about police beatings and nationalism and all that. But they're not out to hurt you. They're like the kindly bearer of bad news. There's some awful shit going on in this country. Terry knows. Terry puts it in terms that speak to me. It's a tragicomedy. I want to laugh and sometimes I want to consider crying. But I don't think I will. I'm pretty certain Terry isn't perverse, they're just the harbinger of the encroaching perverse world. I'm pretty certain Terry wants to be my friend, and your friend. *Release date 17th August 2018** Crack the coffers, Oh Sees have spawned another frothy album of head-destroying psych-epics to grok and rock out to. Notice the fresh dollop of organ and keyboard prowess courtesy of Memory Of A Cut Off Head-alum and noted key-stabber Tom Dolas, while the Paul Quattrone / Dan Rincon drum-corps polyrhythmic pulse continues to astound and pound in equal measure, buttressed by the nimble fingered bottom end of Sir Tim Hellman the Brave and the shred-heaven fret frying of John Dwyer, whilst Lady Brigid Dawson again graces the wax with her harmonic gifts. Aside from the familiar psych-scorch familiar to soggy pit denizens the world over, there's a fresh heavy-prog vibe that fits like a worn-in jean jacket comfortably among hairpin metal turns and the familiar but no less horns-worthy guitar fireworks Dwyer's made his calling card. Perhaps the most notable thing about Smote Destroyer is the artistic restlessness underpinning its flights of fancy. Dwyer refuses to repeat himself and for someone with such a hectic release schedule, that stretching of aesthetic borders and omnivorous appetite seems all the more superhuman!

  • 12: ) Son Of Nothing

Originally formed as teenagers in 1984, The Wolfhounds released four critically acclaimed LPs and numerous singles, appeared on the NME's influential C86 cassette, extensively toured the UK and continental Europe, finally disbanding in 1990. The band reformed in 2006 at the request of St Etienne's Bob Stanley to celebrate 20 years since the release of C86, and inflicted a severe guitar noisefest on an unsuspecting indiepop crowd at London's ICA. Since 2012 they have been recording and releasing new material.

At the peak of media attention over the new bands promoted by the C86 cassette, The Wolfhounds recorded three four-song sessions for the BBC's legendary late-night John Peel Show between March 1986 and January 1987, capturing all the excitement and youthful exuberance of a band just catching the public imagination. With an energy born of sweaty, rammed gigs in the function rooms of London pubs and a willful experimentation nurtured in suburban bedrooms and garages away from watchful eyes, The Wolfhounds blasted their raw live sound straight to tape with little in the way of overdubs or the more considered studio polish of their excellent albums.

Every song from these sessions is now gathered together on Hands In The Till, making a surprisingly coherent whole despite the heady disorganized thrust of the times and a couple of line-up changes in the meantime. More wiry and angular than most of their C86 peers, The Wolfhounds had more in common with The Fall than The Byrds, and "Hands In The Till" shows them at their caustic best.

The Wolfhounds are now (hyper-)active again, releasing two full-length LPs in recent years and performing at several popfests (including Berlin and New York) and Stewart Lee's All Tomorrow's Parties, as well as regular club dates of their own. The band continue to be more relevant than ever, grabbing their home country's woes by the horns on the recent double LP, "Untied Kingdom or How to Come to Terms with your Culture" (which featured guest musicians from such bands as PJ Harvey, Gallon Drunk, Scritti Politti and Evans The Death), Hands In The Till is sure to illuminate such an expansive modern work's precocious teenage beginnings, as well as providing the band's contemporary listeners a nostalgic buzz - forever, a real all-ages show!

Liam Gallagher - Wall Of Glass

Liam Gallagher

Wall Of Glass

7"-Vinyl190295793708
Warner UK
11.07.2017

Unlike boxing, rock and roll is not renowned for great comebacks. A few missteps and then it's usually farewell, have a good life, who are you again Occasionally, though, a true heavy musical champ loses a bout only to re-emerge even stronger later. David Bowie, for example, went through a long fallow period before his renaissance. Paul Weller had a rocky few years before finding his feet as a solo artist. Now we can add a third era-defining voice to that list of champions who returned to reclaim their belt: Liam Gallagher.

After Beady Eye officially split in 2014, Liam found himself out of the bubble' of being in an organised rock group with all the appropriate management apparatus for the first time in twenty years. He fell hard. Suddenly just a regular geezer ( just a regular absolute legend' he clarifies), he had to consider what he was going to do. For a while, he toyed with the idea of moving to Majorca and living Sexy Beast-style' around the pool in the sun. He had a few holidays. He went for lots of jogs. He had a few pints. And he got divorced. And when all that was done he took a long look at himself in the mirror and remembered who he is and what he does. He's Liam Gallagher, son of Peggy Gallagher, of Burnage, Manchester, the best singer and frontman of his generation. So he decided to start singing some songs again. Majorca could wait.

Playing around in his own idiosyncratic style on a guitar at home in London, he surprised himself by writing a song. I am definitely not a professional at it,' he says, modestly. It's proper Frankenstein tackle. But I suppose everyone has their ways. Even Paul McCartney didn't just sit down and write Hey Jude straight away.'

The song that he wrote was a heavy dollop of soul-rock called Bold and strong enough to get him signed to Warner Bros. There was something there alright. Eventually, he had a whole batch of songs written which he demoed with a multi-instrumentalist called Dan McDougall in London before he started to meet producers and co-writers. Warner Bros said to me, 'Are you up for a bit of co-writing I was, like, 'never done that before. Why not'' He flew out to LA, met a few, but really hit it off with Greg Kurstin. Greg Kurstin played me a few ideas, we had a chat, swapped some ideas, sorted it out and before you know we had some more songs. I'm as surprised as anyone that it worked, but the songs we did are top.'

These songs include Liam's incredible first single as a solo artist, Wall Of Glass. If you had to make an equation of all the elements that made the early Oasis singles so apocalyptically good - i.e, huge waves of guitar hooks + melody you can't shake for...ever + thunderous rhythm + LIAM GALLAGHER'S VOICE delivering an unbelievably catchy chorus - then Wall Of Glass fits in the lineage perfectly. It's hard to recall a time he's sung better - it's like hearing him for the first time again, the same yearning menace that claimed a million hearts by the end of Supersonic's first chorus. His voice is definitely on point.

Yeah, well,' he almost agrees. I'm a good singer, man! Nine out of ten times I nail it. In a studio, without a doubt. Never done a shit vocal there.'

Ora Iso - Image Certifies

Ora Iso

Image Certifies

12inchDNLP12
Downwards
22.06.2018

Regis' Downwards label presents an album of heavy hearted industrial songs from Ora Iso, making a kind of windswept, slowed-down and gothic pop variant that's essential listening if yr into HTRK, Tropic of Cancer or Clay Rendering. Ora Iso are an NYC-hailing band revolving around Indonesian-Australian, Kathleen Malay and New Yorker, Jason Kudo. Building on the rubbly ground of their Bathcat debut for Ba Da Bing!, the duo's mutual sense of entropy and ennui results in a classically scorched sound in Image Certifies, one laced with scornful sarcasm and a general dissatisfaction with the world, and yet somehow bolstered by the slightest promise of hope. Weighing in their heavy, bleeding hearts on 10 brittle dirges described by the band as 'A love letter to a society dying of its own self-induced cancers', Ora Iso play to Downwards' most maudlin aspects with a sound that clearly resonates with their previous releases by Eyeless In Gaza or Tropic Of Cancer, but here blessed with a strung-out, unyielding and lugubrious quality they can surely call their own. As will become patently obvious, Image Certifies is not a record that takes itself lightly, and when the mood is right, the blend of Kathleen Malay's stark, cracked, gothic vocals with Jason's Kudo's cranky as hell Vainio-esque instrumental backdrops is a perfect accompaniment to moments of introspection and misanthropy. From almost BM-styled beginnings on No Fish, their agenda becomes apparent as it grows into a slow rolling fog of distant, evocative vocals wailing worn-out nothings about 'the future' and 'the children' in an effortlessly sensuous and blank-eyed style that worms thru the record, peaking in highlights such as the jagged Dead Riot, and the folksier trudge of Pour It On Me, whilst the bollocked drums of From The Hallway To The Door and the exquisitely succinct Have I Gone Too Far packs a more gothic electronic crunch recalling NIN or Clay Rendering.

LATE NIGHT TALES
30.04.2020

Singer/musician/producer Aisha Chaouche is set to release debut album 'Safe', a deeply emotional document of heartbreaking and spine tingling hymns that have helped bring peace to traumatic events experienced earlier in her life. Her delicate piano playing features prominently and is bolstered by balanced production of her own massed vocals, programmed drums, sub-bass, cello, violin and an obsession with reverb and delay.

Aisha spent her childhood growing up in Swansea before moving to Bristol where she studied at BIMM music college. Signing to Late Night Tales' sister label Night Time Stories on the strength of a Soundcloud demo, Chaouche's debut single 'I'll Lose My Head' was released in May 2017. Her music has been described as 'heartbreaking and spine tingling hymns' by Wonderland Magazine, 'channelling the hymnal qualities of Cat's Eyes with the dense vocals of Medúlla-era Björk' by The Line of Best Fit and a 'songwriter of real strength and subtlety' by Clash. Bristol Live Magazine has hailed her "the city's most exciting new act". Support has also come from BBC 6 Music's Lauren Laverne, saying she'd played her "on a loop all week" and Radio 1's Huw Stephens who's called her music 'beautiful".

"To start with I'd say that the somehow poetic title of the fourth album of The Married Monk (MM, a delightful acronym...), The Belgian Kick, is meaningless. This enduring nonsense (remember R/O/C/K/Y the previous one) is of an appropriate aestheticism. To be specific, it is a portrait of a bearded refrigerant wearing Ray Ban shades and who seems to be coming from nowhere. I especially love this art of foiling (in this point you have to call it art) the potential listeners of MM. Actually, MM like being where nobody awaits them. Yet, nothing is planned and their only motivation is to go forward even if it implies taking steps aside. Presently reduced to the original trio (a wonderful anglophile singer plus a brilliant DYI photo-graphic designer-musician and a gifted drummer), the band has here recorded its most mature and varied album to date. This diversity allows an incredible balancing act, making a standing jump from an implacable disco-pop hit (Pretty Lads) to an improbable slow (Totally Confused) through a rock injunction (Tell Me Gary) and a swaying ballad (Love Commander); add to these a transfiguration of an unknown title of John Barry (You Only Live Twice) or forgotten Captain Beefheart (Observatory Crest) which will not go unnoticed 'ici ou ailleurs'. Or else, how to cleverly revisit songs of others - an old habit for MM. And what about the others MM just don't care much. Enough to take out from the cupboard the saxophone, the most disparaged instrument of rock history. If I had to write a chapter on that point I would state that MM is one of the most atypical French bands, and the twelve tracks of this Belgian Kick are a good illustration of it. Belgian people won't say the contrary."
