Horsebeach is the Manchester-based project masterminded by multi-instrumentalist and producer Ryan Kennedy. Two years on from the chiming majesty of II, he returns with Beauty And Sadness - ten rain-soaked vignettes touching on love, loss, regret and remorse. Conceptual, confessional and boldly melodic, it's a deeply textured LP fusing the familiar C86 jangle with chirping synths, grooving rhythms and expansive ambience whilst meditating on break ups and fuck ups with striking lyrical honesty.

Melancholic, but never miserable, Beauty And Sadness is a celebration in the exquisite pain of longing. Named after Yasunari Kawabata's 1964 novel of the same name - a book which helped Kennedy through a difficult breakup - the source of the album's title gives a clue as to what lies within, as Ryan explains, It's about regret and an overlaying sense of loss but also a realisation of the beauty of starting again. I found some beauty in sadness, as it forced me to re-evaluate everything.'

Although the sound may be a departure from Horsebeach's norm, the recording process remains the same with Kennedy overseeing all aspects of production. Taking full control of his melodic output, Beauty And Sadness is the third record to be released on Horsebeach's own Alone Together imprint.

Drawing on inspiration from either side of the Atlantic, both new and old, Horsebeach's music retains a certain appreciation to classic British guitar bands - The Smiths, Felt and groups from the C86 era are all indebted here. But Kennedy gives it a unique twist by delving into ambient electronics inspired by the likes of William Basinski and Jefre Cantu-Ledesma. From the album's dream-like intro - soft with velveteen pads and the delicate romanticism from a speech sample of Japanese author, Yukio Mishima - hazy synths give way to propulsive percussion, rippling guitars and soaring chord progressions as the band's bittersweet signature sound evolves with newfound poise and purpose.

"Different Class" was the fifth album by Pulp and their commercial breakthrough. "Different Class" went to #1 in the UK album charts in 1995 at the height of Britpop with the classic track "Common People" reaching #2 on the UK singles chart. The album explores sex and class with Jarvis Cocker's biting, witty lyrics taking a perfect snapshot of mid 90s English suburban and working class life. A stone cold Britpop classic reissued on mint color vinyl.

Australian gothic synth-pop quartet The Jezabels have released the haunting animated video for 'Come Alive', the first taste of the band's third album Synthia released on February 12th through Caroline Distribution. 'Come Alive' is a dark industrial encounter, its brooding bass-led synths making way for cathartic, breathy vocals that build into a gargantuan crescendo from The Jezabels. Kerrang have confirmed an album review to run the week ahead of release and The Jezabels will be completing a Playlist and a Photo Diary for Notion to run online to be published around the album release. The Jezabels are set to play a special one-off performance at The Dome, London on March 10th in support of Synthia. Having previously playing sold out shows at Shepherds Bush Empire, KOKO, Brixton Electric, Heaven and many more in support of their extensive back catalogue. This will be a rare opportunity to catch the band in one of their most intimate appearances in the capital yet.

The husband and wife duo of Alaina and Patrick, otherwise known as Tennis, return with Yours Conditionally', their new album which will be released on 10th March 2017 on the band's own label Mutually Detrimental.

Building on their dreamy combination of perfect melodies and classic songwriting, Yours Conditionally' sees a full circle return to their nautical roots of sorts, with the duo even writing part of the album while sailing at sea, what Alaina calls a grandiose gesture', a necessary venture of revisiting the past to reinvigorate the present. However, the pair dig deeper and darker this time round, with the resultant album wedding discussions of identity and self-sacrifice to some of their most pristine and infectious hooks yet.

Achingly beautiful lead single In the Morning I'll Be Better', written about the precariousness of our lives', sums up this paradox completely, with gorgeous melodies belying its subject matter of Riley seeing a family member through a serious illness. Please Don't Ruin This For Me' and Fields of Blue' also deliciously straddle the light/ dark divide, while others, like Ladies Don't Play Guitar' and the divine swoon of Modern Woman' hit the pop bullseye square on the nose while unpacking conflicting themes of feminism and industry archetypes.

Taken in toto, Yours Conditionally' sees a band at maturation point, looking fondly to the past while also staring down the uncertainty and confusion of the future without flinching. This is Tennis at their contrary, compelling best.

The generic tag Be Music was first used in 1981 and covered studio production work by all four members of New Order: Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook, Stephen Morris and Gillian Gilbert. Sumner often teamed with Donald 'Dojo' Johnson of A Certain Ratio, including the pioneering electro cuts featured here by Quando Quango, 52nd Street, Marcel King, Paul Haig and Surprize. Morris and Gilbert worked with Thick Pigeon, Life, Red Turns To and also 52nd Street. Although more rock orientated, Hook proved he was no slouch on the dancefloor either with the mighty Fate/Hate by Nyam Nyam.
'Producing was a really important sideline,' recalls Bernard Sumner of the Factory era. 'It's OK doing it because although all the groups are skint, you learn a lot and you're helping somebody.'

It's the forgotten place. Lying between the mountains of northwest Tunisia and the Algerian border, the Bargou valley and the village named after it lie isolated, away from the world. It's poor, barren country, but standing apart, Bargou has developed its own culture that had never been documented until Nidhal Yahyaoui began the task.

Born in the valley, he grew up hearing his parents and family sing the songs that belong to the region, and he was determined that the music and traditions shouldn't slip away into obscurity. With Targ, the album he's made with his band Bargou 08, Yahyaoui has perfectly fused the past and the present to place Bargou on the map.

Nidhal began collecting songs from all over the valley more than ten years ago,' explains producer and keyboard player Sofyann Ben Youssef, who's known Yahyaoui since they were both ten years old. No one had ever done that before. He listened to the women, to the village elders, and he learned all the variations on the songs. This is his passion, and he asked me to join him.'

Together, they assembled a collective of both local and European musicians who spent three weeks playing in the Yahyaoui family home in Bargou village. They worked on the material, shaping a sound that harnessed the power of the tradition and connected it to something the young would understand.

They took the music they'd created on the road, playing it in cities and villages throughout Tunisia and around the globe, including roaring performances at the famed Roskilde festival in Denmark and the Rainforest festival in Sarawak. For touring, Bargou 08 became a five-piece band, with Yahyaoui on vocals and loutar, Ben Youssef on Moog, along with drums, bendir, and gasba and zokra flutes. By the time they arrived back in Bargou to finally record, they'd honed their ideas and knew how the album would sound.

Bales of hay were piled up in the rooms to act as acoustic baffles. Ben Yousef set up in the kitchen, operating the recording equipment with one hand and playing Moog with the other. It was an improvised setup, but it captured the fire and energy of the musicians' performances. But it all revolves around Yahyaoui's voice. Raw and emotional, plaintive and passionate, it proudly bears all the weight of history. And underneath, the thick, fat bass carries the music firmly into the 21st century.

Yahyaoui's singing, whether about love or the sense of difference and isolation that marks the Bargou people, catches every strand of emotion in the songs, making them so real and concrete that the songs could have been written yesterday. Around him, the explosive rhythms of drums and percussion give a primal power to the bass grooves. It's the trance of the past emerging from out of the speakers.

Cloudland Canyon's third LP, An Arabesque, was spearheaded by founding member Kip Uhlhorn but fleshed out with contributions from Memphis rock royalty such as Ross Johnson (Panther Burns, Alex Chilton), Lesa Alridge (Big Star) and Jody Stephens (Big Star), alongside collaborative accents by Ezra Buchla, M. Geddes Gengras, Kliph Scurlock (ex-Flaming Lips), David Scott Stone (ex-LCD Soundsystem), and Pete Kember aka Sonic Boom (Spacemen 3, Spectrum), who also co-produced the album. While past recordings on Holy Mountain and Kranky flirted with drone and krautrock modes, An Arabesque skews in a more rhythmic direction, with shades of naive disco and new age. This particular set of songs benefits from having been heavily road-tested over the last two years, resulting in greater distillation and focus.

RIYL THE CURE /KILLING JOKE/CHAMELEONS; Drab Majesty began as a warbled transmission received via 4-track cassette in a dim, Los Angeles bedroom in 2012. The entity known as Deb Demure, an interdimensional muse of sorts, lent an otherworldly vision to a human contact; one to be realized through meticulously composed lo-fi recordings. Focusing on the aesthetics of cult ritual and the devastating power of music, Deb sought an alternative way to share the cosmic agenda. Culminating in a cassette titled Unarian Dances, Drab Majesty's manifesto to humanity was revealed: revel in the power of artistic influences that reside beyond the self. The tape circulated through Los Angeles, catching the attention of local tastemakers like the heads at Lollipop Records in Echo Park. It quickly found a place on the shelves of LA's underground musical seekers. After a gauntlet of performances and late night manifestations, Drab Majesty came on the radar of DAIS Records.In 2015, Drab Majesty released Careless, the first LP which was received and recorded solely by Demure on living room floors and in cluttered spaces across the city. After three pressings and an imminent fourth, Careless remains a fixture in LA's somber yet sublime nightlife and a noted contribution to the murkier subcultures abroad. Wielding a left-handed guitar, Deb employs a unique style of arpeggiated finger picking, producing vast and organic musical textures reminiscent of Vinny Reilly (Durutti Column) with the anthemic power of Sisters of Mercy and Cocteau Twins. In the past two years Deb has been invited to support bands such as Cold Cave, Psychic TV, Clan of Xymox, The Frozen Autumn, Prayers, and label mates Youth Code and King Dude. From its incarnation, Drab Majesty was a solo act; an interplay between guitar and triggered machines. In 2016, with growing audiences and heightened interest, Drab expanded into a duo, employing the keyboard accompaniment of far-out twin, Mona D - filling out frequencies and upping the spectacle of the live performance.

Medical Records (again) in collaboration with Crispy Nuggets blog is proud to present a compilation/reissue of the UK underground duo Laugh Clown Laugh. In addition to the driving, infectious earworm that is "Feel So Young" (and the dub version), this LP is composed of 10 never before heard songs from those home recordings. All tracks have been transferred and restored from the original tapes with dazzling results. The album opens with the fitting "Feel So Young" which sets the tone and engages the listener to know they are in for a wonderful synthpop journey. The simplicity and focus on the lead synth tracks and percussion is what sets this collection apart. The tracks "Face To Face" and "Kiss In The Rain" are absolute minimal synth pop masterpieces. All tracks have an amazing dance floor sensibility but could also be well suited to a quiet day at home immersed in synth warblings. This LP will certainly appeal to fans of earliest Human League, Oppenheimer Analysis, and earliest Vince Clarke era Depeche Mode (but even more sparse). Presented on 180gram transparent orange high-quality vinyl in a limited edition. Bonus insert included as well with liner notes by Kurt B. Reighley and other tidbits.

Alexis Taylor announces Listen With(out) Piano, a companion album to his 2016 record Piano. Released March 3rd 2017 via Moshi Moshi, Listen With(out) Piano features new versions by artists including Papa M (David Pajo), Green Gartside (Scritti Politti), Spring Heel Jack, Beatrice Dillon, Brian DeGraw (Gang Gang Dance), which can be played on their own, or at the same time as the songs on Piano, to create a brand new listening experience.

The album features the work of eleven of Alexis's favourite musicians, handpicked to create new tracks designed to work in response to the songs on Piano, the third solo album by the Hot Chip frontman. Though the record can be synched with the original Piano recordings by playing both albums on two devices simultaneously, the tracks on Listen With(out) Piano can be also be enjoyed as original songs on their own merits.

As humans, we are aware of our inner beast and should therefore be able to control it. We understand our hard-wired primal urges and why they exist in an evolutional sense. We understand the relationship between mind and body. Highly evolved and intelligent, we should be able to recognize these genetic hangovers and control them as a means to act positively and move forward as a compassion-ate species. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Recent global events have proven this. The human race is consuming itself.World Eater, the new album by Benjamin John Power's Blanck Mass project, is a reaction to this. There is an underlying violence and anger throughout the record, even though some of these tracks are the closest Power has ever come to writing, in his words, actual love songs.' Maybe subconsciously this was some kind of countermeasure to restore some personal balance,' Power explains. On World Eater, Power further perfects the propulsive, engrossing electronic music he has created throughout his impressive decade-plus career, both under the Blanck Mass moniker and as one-half of Fuck Buttons, as he elaborates upon the sound of 2015's brilliant double album Dumb Flesh. As massive as the sonic world of the new record often feels, its greatest achievement is in its maximization of a limited set of tools, a restriction intentionally set by Power himself. As an exercise in better understanding myself musically, I found myself using an increasingly restricted palette during the World Eater creative process. Evoking these intense emotions using minimal components really put me outside of my comfort zone and was unlike the process I am used to. Feeling exposed shone a new light on this particular snapshot. I feel enriched for doing so.'

Plants and Animals are a Montreal-based trio that began playing together as kids, emerged on the international scene in 2008 and have developed a varied cult following ever since, built this on the shoulders of their self-produced records, their intense live show, or both—depending on who you ask. They have been on many tours on their own around North America and Europe. In 2013, they decided to slow down. By slow down, they meant make music the way they used to. It was the beginning of what would be an on-and-off recording process stretched out over two years. It was a time of rest, as the story often goes, for a band that had seen plenty of touring and not enough home. They slept in their own beds and made their new album through nine seasons and the thick of life. Through births and deaths, most notably—magnificent sunrises, shattering sunsets and the days between. Their new LP is called Waltzed in from the Rumbling. It is a dance of days.
By make music the way they used to, they meant to follow threads to their frayed ends. They recorded any ideas that popped up and edited impulsively. Lyrics were often streams of consciousness, bent into shape. They left mistakes in place where they had their charms, looking to expose rather than conceal. The lead singer doubled as engineer, the lead guitar player as baroque pianist, the drummer as inside-outside eye. They called in friends to sing, to play bass, keys, strings and horns. They found an antique guiro next to an obsolete VCR on the curbside and recorded both. They made an empty fridge sound like a timpani drum. They covertly recorded girls' brash gossip on a city bus. They discovered the guy who always hung around in the kitchen was a cabasa wizard. It all found a place. They took the path of big production. They pulled down the curtains and showed their hearts and bones. It felt like the time that they quit their day jobs, holed up in a crooked apartment on Parc Avenue and made their first record. "It was more like an art studio than a recording studio," says Warren Spicer. "A mess, pieces of songs all over the place. We had this big canvas and were constantly filling in corners here, erasing there, repainting that part, standing back and looking at the whole picture to see what we had."
The influences are far and wide: the broken soul of Van Morrison; the off-kilter geometry of J Dilla; the dark, French funk of Serge Gainsbourg; the fire of John Coltrane's quartet; Messiaen's synaesthesia; the quirk of Angelo Badalamenti. It sounds like P&A, wide open with room to move.
"We wanted to push the songs in less obvious directions to keep it interesting," says Matthew Woodley. "To keep each other on our toes but also imagining that people listening to it would appreciate the same. But if it ever felt like cleverness was taking precedence over feeling, we'd drop what we were doing and move onto something else."
"We pushed each other and we listened to each other more than ever before,' says Nic Basque. "It was fun and much easier than in the past. You just work—that's how people develop their language in whatever they do. That's what we did."

This is Plants and Animals' most soulful and inventive collection of music yet. Eleven soundtracks for leaps taken, ships sailed, dark water and pink skies.

'Sea Sate Pictures' is the debut album from The Hundredth Anniversary, recorded by Ben Hampson in a barn on the outskirts of Brighton over the winter of 2015.

Sea State Pictures sees the band explore themes of the body, loss, and finding courage for change - with the album pinpointing a year that saw huge twists and turns for members of the band. The album is an intimate celebration of change and quiet hopefulness, delivered through their precisely structured songs that marry bright guitar lines, rigorous percussion and clear, honest vocals.  

"No Problemo" is Jonny Teardrop's first physical album release. Inspired by Native American peyote songs, using his Jaguar as a bass, drum samples from obscure Japanese crust punk songs, Jonny Teardrop charges through 13 brief songs snapping audible polaroids and conjuring fragments of memories. A short movie made of 13 scenes, written by himself and directed by Louis Vignat will be presented alongside the album. The 13 videos will be your introduction to Jonny's weird and complex universe; a door that won't be easily closed once opened.

Im Februar 2017 erscheint "Dear Bigotry", das neue Album der Norwegischen Indie-Band Einar Stray Orchestra. Das neue Werk der Band um Sänger und Pianist Einar Stray entstand im letzten Winter auf einer Insel an der Nordwest-Küste Norwegens. Während vor den Studiofenstern Stürme wüteten, nahmen die fünf Bandmitglieder zusammen mit den Produzenten Marius Hagen (Frontmann von Team Me) sowie Rumble In Rhodos-Gitarrist Øyvind Røsrud die zehn Stücke ihres dritten Albums auf.
"Die neuen Songs drehen sich um Doppelmoral, eine Hassliebe zu Oslo sowie neue Aspekte unserer religiösen Erziehung. Die maximalistische Klanglandschaft wurde beeinflusst von allem zwischen Arabischem Folk bis Lana Del Rey," sagt die Band.

The first release of 2016 on the newly relaunched Dance To The Radio label will be 'Lose Control' the new single from platinum-selling Leeds band The Pigeon Detectives, ahead of their new album 'Broken Glances' out in February 2017. A sold-out UK tour preceded the release of the single which represents a new direction for the band having made the record with Leeds's critically acclaimed producer Richard Formby (Wild Beasts / Ghostpoet / I like Trains).

On February 24th, indie rock songwriter Alec Ounsworth will return with a new album as Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. Dubbed The Tourist, it will serve as his fifth full-length under the moniker and the follow-up to 2014's Only Run. The Tourist was recorded over the course of a week at Dr. Dog's studio in Philadelphia. Its 10 tracks were engineered by Nick Krill of The Spinto Band and mixed by Dave Fridmann, who assisted on two of CYHSY's previous LPs. Musically, the album is said to be a nod' to Ounsworth's inspirations, such as Tom Waits, Nick Cave, and Paul Simon, and features keyboard-laden cuts alongside more folk-based numbers. I wanted to experiment with packing lyrics,' Ounsworth says in a press release. On this album, the lyrics and vocal melody effectively carry the songs, maybe more than anything else. Elvis Costello does this really well on his song 'Beyond Belief,' as does Paul Simon on his solo albums.' In terms of theme, Ounsworth uses The Tourist to reflect on an emotional last couple of years, describing the songs as a type of purge.' A purge of certain emotional confusion that manifested itself in the last several years,' he explains. I'd rather not say that it was a dark time, but it was a difficult time in my life — among the most difficult. But I needed and need to try to let it go. And this is how I let things go.'

A delicate collection of songs for meditation on spiritual struggle, The Leaves Fall is a window into the parallel reality of Justin Carter. Centered on his intimate vocals, pointed with hints of Arthur Russell and John Martyn, the eight tracks are buttressed by warm acoustic guitars, vibraphones, organs and flourished with modern production. They are familiar but distant, like ghosts living in the present. Carter grew up in a country house in rural North Carolina, a place with a pecan tree and abandoned train tracks in the front yard. On long car rides from home to his dad's work as a school teacher, his ears were filled with the prog of Yes, the vocals of Al Jarreau and the complexity of Christopher Parkening's take on Bach. It was his father, who himself has moonlighted as a guitar player and songwriter for nearly 50 years, that taught Carter to sing and play in his early teens.

The Leaves Fall was written on and off over the course of about five years, a secret to most. Carter is more familiar, alongside Eamon Harkin, as co-founder of popular New York parties Mister Saturday Night and Mister Sunday, and their label offshoot, Mister Saturday Night Records. As the Mister thrived, his songwriting continued to tick along in the background, days and weeks stolen here and there to write and record in various locations - from remote studios in the
Catskills to basements in Venice Beach.

The album features Jason Lindner, pianist on Bowie's final masterpiece, Blackstar, cello from Archie Pelago's Greg Heffernan, and programming by LIES Records and The Trilogy Tapes producer Marcos Cabral. It was mixed by Benjamin Tierney, who also worked his magic on Kamasi Washington's The Epic. It finds its context in the world of Planetarium, a new listening session established by Carter and his Mister Saturday Night DJ partner, Eamon Harkin, where live music is mixed amongst hours of records to create an immersive, communal listening experience focused on quality hi-fi sound in non-traditional spaces, the album will presented in this manner when toured.

He started with Paisley Underground pioneers The Three O Clock, joined supergroups Jellyfish with Andy Sturmer and Roger Manning, and the Grays with Jon Brion, finally scoring a solo deal with Elektra. He's gone on to release numerous solo records and has worked with a wide range of artists, including Beck, Air, Brendan Benson and Paul McCartney.

A relentless vinyl collector and a fervent connoisseur of Anglo-American culture, the founding painter of the Figuration Libre movement (with Di Rosa, Blanchart and Boisrond) in the early 80's, Robert Combas has always connected his art with rock music. The two are always intertwined and fuel his inspiration. During his exhibition Sans Filet, Robert Combas made an essential encounter: the artist and video maker Lucas Mancione, also from the town of Sete, and decided to make the leap. Together, at the start of the decade, they created the band Les Sans Pattes. Notre Renaissance is a dazzling discharge, a geyser of cold and searing emotions, a conscious search for a unique and extreme experience. The tension in each track is palpable, as constant as it is pregnant. This band is full of character. Sometimes electronic, often a bit punk, always particularly rock'n'roll. Raw and physical tracks, compact and heady. Les Sans Pattes always lean towards psychedelics and repetition.
