Since 2011, Mike"s been a Drag City stalwart, first with Sic Alps, then as a solo and with The Peacers - but Mike "The Mighty Flashlight" Fellows has been a behind-the-scenes figure at Drag City since the early early days, playing live and on record with Royal Trux, Silver Jews and Will Oldham. Mike D"s music, in all phases, takes the form of a next-phase roots-pop: soaked in the traditional waters of rock and roll and passed through a variety of after-punk sonic sieves, highlighted with DIY and lo-fi values, and making a jolly hallucinatory racket, at that! He prefers a particular density of obtuse angles colliding sweet and hot noise, an arrangement he has perfected over all his Sic Alps/solo/The Peacers years; his innate understanding of the mechanics of a pop song wends purposefully through the junk-strewn landscape, sharing secrets with cipher in hand. Playing in this cracked kingdom of sound/garden of verse, Mighty Flashlight alternately accents and balances Mike"s eccentricities with his playing and knob-spinning - and with the Flashlight shining bright upon him, Donovan"s serpentine path becomes ever so much more elastic, heightened from line to line, change to change, its motility creating different shapes in our ears. Mighty"s own kind of stereo imagining informs Donovan"s smoky subterranea with additional depth of field, while still allowing all the wayward details within the arrangement to diverge as one. Mike and Mighty wind it all together: art punk utterance and top 40 radio junk of yore, the primitivity that formed recorded music in its youth, honkytonk romanticism, liminal chamber-folk and ever-present disassociated psychedelia, transformed via self-medication into a gleeful, extramusical ennui while giving the listener impetus to sing along with Mike"s patented unlikely combos of melody and lyric.

Obscure British prog-rock band Mighty Baby evolved from a Mod group called The Action, but moved heavily into experimental psychedelia in 1969, when they cut an incredible debut for the Head label. Glastonbury Fayre Festival 1971 captures the legendary group in live action, ‘A Blanket In My Muesli’ being a free-form jam that remains their best-loved effort; ‘India’ is a similarly hefty instrumental mega-jam with lilting flute amidst the bluesy guitar work, and there are awesome renditions of ‘Virgin Spring,’ ‘Devil’s Whisper’ and ‘Lazy Days.’ If you like your prog thoughtful, complex, and multi-layered, this one’s for you!

The Mapendo album of the Mighty Cavaliers, up to today, has been shrouded in mystery. If you look at the original cover of this very rare Kenyan funk-infused album all you will find are the names of the engineer and the producer, as EMI Kenya omitted the names of the musicians and the songwriters. Digging deeper a rather sinister story of deceit develops whereby Mapendo becomes symbolic for all what was wrong about the Kenyan record industry in the 1970s, and the music industry in Africa as a whole. As this maltreatment of artists proved endemic throughout the continent, although little talked about.

One of the three surviving members of the Mighty Cavaliers, bass player Bonnie Wanda - who started his career in 1971 with Gloria Africana - vividly remembers participating in the recording of the two albums the band made in 1976 and 1977 - Fisherman and Mapendo - and how they, especially on the last album, got short-changed by shrewd record label executives. In the 1960s it was mostly Indian and European record bosses that called the shots and usually gave musicians the chance of a one-off payment for their session time and recorded songs or wait for - hopefully - a generous royalty check. In most cases records didn't sell more than a thousand copies with an occasional hit selling in the tens of thousands, so musicians were reluctant to register themselves with the Music Copyright Society of Kenya. Although without doing so one couldn't receive royalties.

'For two years the Mighty Cavaliers performed five nights a week at the Starlight Club for five hour sets.

The re-release of Mapendo, the first of the German Want Some Records label, is another exciting puzzle piece in the tapestry of groovy Kenyan music. It proves that there are still great gems out there to be re-discovered for audiences worldwide.

20 albums and 25 years into her recording career and only now does Thea Gilmore feel enough of herself to make the self-titled album that renews her vows to music - her first love. The album is released on 6th October. The album was entirely written, played and produced by Thea. Thea Gilmore is absolutely the record she wanted to make. In many ways the record she had to make. Sustained by the very public dissection of her personal life laid bare on her last full-length release, the stunningly intimate Afterlight, Thea's hard-earned reputation as one of the most distinctive, strident and bold singer songwriters of her generation propels her to reach for new ground and this new release feels like a great leap forward into tomorrow. "That's why this is my first self-titled album," she explains. "On my last album I changed by name to Afterlight and drew a line under everything I'd done up to that point. Not to invalidate it, but to put an end to the 'before'. It was a very inward-looking record that was rooted in the darkness of everything that happened to me up to 2019, whereas this album has its head up and is eyeing the world as a challenge. It's a logical forward motion - the emergence from the shadows of Afterlight into the relative lightness of Thea Gilmore - in a renewal of my vows to music; my first love. In a weird way it feels like a debut of sorts so it made sense to make it eponymous." Across 12 tracks Thea delves into the cracks between the paving slabs of life's big themes. She's exploring the understanding that comes with experience, choosing her battles and finding out who she is now. The stunning 'She Speak In Colours' is a song for love and loss written as part of BBC Radio 2's critically lauded 21st Century Folk project; while 'The Next Time You Win' with its simple piano figures and its collage of spoken and sung lines seems to both accept the way the world works while reaffirming the pledge to stand on the frontline of change. Thea is also excited to bring the album to the stage. She will play London’s Union Chapel on 12th October and then an 11-date tour around the UK in early 2024. Full dates below. Timechild ist zurück mit ihrem lang erwarteten zweiten Album "Blossom & Plague", das am 1. September 2023 weltweit über Mighty Music veröffentlicht wird. Die Vision dieses Albums ist es, zu zeigen, wie Heavy Rock auch im Jahr 2023 noch herausfordern und überraschen kann.

Der schwere und dynamische Sound und die Texte der dänischen Band haben sich auf diesem Album in eine progressivere und dunklere Richtung entwickelt. Obwohl das Fundament des Sounds der Band eindeutig von den Giganten der Vergangenheit gelegt wurde, wird die Inspiration sowohl durch die Zeit als auch durch die Genres gezogen. Genau diese Möglichkeit, in die vergangenen Jahrzehnte der Musikgeschichte einzutauchen und dadurch ihren eigenen Sound zu definieren, war ein wichtiger Teil des Songwriting- und Aufnahmeprozesses.

Das Artwork wurde von Travis Smith (Opeth, Megadeth, Katatonia, Avenged Sevenfold) entwickelt, der Timechild dabei half, die perfekte visuelle Darstellung der Platte zu erreichen.

Produziert, gemischt und gemastert wurde das Album erneut von Soren Andersen (Glenn Hughes, Phil Campbell, Jesper Binzer). Mit seiner großen Erfahrung in diesem Genre, sowohl als Produzent als auch als Musiker, war Soren eine natürliche Wahl, als es darum ging, die neuen Visionen der Band zum Leben zu erwecken. Das Ergebnis sind acht starke und einzigartige Tracks, die die dynamische Bandbreite und die künstlerischen Visionen der Band aufzeigen.

Nach einem vielversprechenden Debütalbum im Jahr 2017 waren die dänischen Hardrocker JUNKYARD DRIVE bereit, 2018 mit ihrem zweiten Studioalbum "Black Coffee" in der Szene zu explodieren. Heute ist "Black Coffee" eines der meistgehörten dänischen Hardrock-Alben im Internet, mit über sieben Millionen Streams auf den wichtigsten Plattformen. "Where I Belong" ist sogar der beliebteste Junkyard Drive-Song mit mehr als drei Millionen Streams auf Spotify.Jetzt, nach Jahren des Ausverkaufs, wird "Black Coffee" endlich eine neue Vinyl-Edition bekommen. Es wird auf lila 180-Gramm-LP erhältlich sein, limitiert auf 500 Exemplare und handnummeriert. Ein klassisches Format für ein modernes klassisches Hardrock-Album, das sich die Sammler nicht entgehen lassen werden.

Die meisten in der Musikindustrie sagten eine neue Thrash Dämmerung voraus, nachdem eine dritte Welle die Szene in den frühen 00er Jahren erreichte und für genügend Nachwuchs sorgte, um in den Ruhestand gehende Veteranen wie Slayer zu ersetzen. Es stellte sich heraus, dass 20 Jahre später eine junge dänische Band sich weigern würde, im Status Quo zu verharren und die Szene mit einem der aufregendsten Debütalben seit Municipal Waste's "Waste 'Em All" heftig traf. Diese Band war DEMOLIZER, und im Jahr 2022 begaben sie sich erneut ins Studio, um das neue Album "Post Necrotic Human" aufzunehmen, nachdem sie die dänischen Autobahnen mit ihren alles zerschmetternden High-Speed-Riffs und erdrückenden Donner-Breakdowns bereist hatten. Das Album wurde in den Plague Studios aufgenommen und gemischt, und in No Masters Voice gemastert.

Mighty Baby evolved out of the Action, club favourites who released a number of poor-selling singles. Dropped by Parlophone, musical chairs saw Ian Whiteman (keyboards/flute) and Martin Stone (guitar) join and the music now blended progressive psychedelia with longer pieces dominated by instrumental prowess rather than Reggie King’s soulful vocals. King departed and guitarist Alan King and Whiteman began to share vocal duties on newly penned material like ‘Egyptian Tomb’ and ‘House Without Windows’ that, in retrospect, can be seen as reflecting light from the dark star of the Grateful Dead.

“Mighty Baby” was first released on the Head label on 7th November 1969 in a superb gatefold sleeve with artist Martin Sharp serving up the arresting front cover that looked like a lion being showered in blood. The album received positive reviews, with International Times stating “The music has a hundred characters… Eastern, Oriental, country, folk, rock, blues, pop etc. etc… At this moment in time Mighty Baby’s record is simply THE best thing in its class.”

The album is now seen as a progressive rock classic; cohesive, with no low spots, the inventiveness and musical prowess on a par with the equally revered, albeit jazzier, prog rock band Cressida. This latest edition from Ace, not only replicates the gatefold sleeve of the original but also contains an inner sleeve replete with memorabilia from the collection of Richard Morton Jack

With its cinematic mood and compelling groove, “Bona Fide" is a fitting title track for the debut album from the duo Michael Leonhart (producer/multi- instrumentalist) & JSWISS (emcee). Back in 2013 we took ourselves on a discographic adventure without really knowing what we were doing! Who would have thought that 10 years later, we'd be releasing our 50th 45 RPM record?

As luck would have it, we are happy to announce our new release, in collab with one of the flagship bands from today's funk scene, Germany's own "Mighty Mocambos", who have been delivering their instrumental groove and Caribbean vibes via their alter ego, "Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band" across Europe for more than fifteen years.

So, what better way to immortalize the raw and intense live sound that they're famous for than releasing a record on our favourite format?

Two sides recorded live on tape during the "Queen 16 B-Girl battle" in Berlin in 2022. Somewhat reminiscent of Can's "Vitamin C", the A side "International Cypher" has an oriental funk feel thanks to the use of the sharp sound of an electric Phin (Thai guitar), while thestraight up percussive funk instrumental "Queen 16 theme" pays tribute to the B-Girls onlyfestival, of which the soundtrackwas designed for the occasion.
