Hen Yanni’s first EP is the story of a journey. A story in music of a spatial and psychological journey. With this record, she abandons her former life as a nomadic model, actress and DJ, for that of a musician. She performs a cathartic exercise of going back over the darkest moments of her life. She opens up on the grief of losing her mother, the end of an incandescent seven-year relationship and, more generally, on the loss - tangible or not - of people, moments and memories. Produced by electronic music composer Arnaud Rebotini, the Israeli musician’s album transcends its folk, rock, dark and new wave influences. After releasing her acclaimed debut LP in 2019 that was followed by slots at Way Out West and Reeperbahn, she's now back with her second album 'The Dark Lord' that expands her sound without losing its characteristics.

In Blood is the group’s 14th album and the follow-up to 2020’s critically acclaimed Dances/Curses (Album Of The Year – The Quietus, Top 10 International Albums – Irish Times). It was typical of a band so well-known for stellar live performances to release their most successful album at a time when they were unable to back it up on the road. As was the case for many, lockdown changed the band’s lives in unexpected ways. Some felt a form of cabin fever at not being able to continue to make music (diverting their energies elsewhere - founding Wrong Speed Records for starters) whereas others relished the peace and quiet, perhaps questioning whether they wanted to return to the life they had before. Gigs (so long the lifeblood of the band) were booked, postponed, and cancelled. Things began to unravel and perhaps for the first time since the band formed in 2003 it was hard to see how it could continue. A plan was hatched to attempt to re-energise and reassemble the band: they would begin work on a new album. They would approach this as though a Somerset version of The Desert Sessions – members old and new and guests would contribute as and when time and restrictions allowed. Lyrically, British folk and ghost mythology provided the starting position for the song themes ranging from mutated stories of grief and loss written in the 14th Century (Perle), spiritual reawakening by ancient apparitions (Avalon) to the growth of nature after devastation (Can’t Feel Around Us, Over Cedar Limb), a metaphor also for spirit and body renewal and rebirth after trauma. The results sound free of any genre shackles and it suits Hey Colossus. They have taken the expansive anything-goes approach that made Dances/Curses so successful and fine-tuned and shaped it into an 8-song single album that never treads water or fills time. The prominent vocals steer the listener through the music, defining it as opposed to punctuating it (or being buried by it). The album is a calling card for the band in their 20th anniversary year. As odd and challenging as long-term fans would expect or hope for, but somehow more accessible and to the point than ever before. It is the closest the group have ever come to a pop record, radiating positivity through the murk like a small ray of light in some very dark and very weird times. Music can never entirely negate these feelings but, like the natural world referenced in the lyrics and sleeve, it invisibly bonds people together, lifting us up if we choose to let it.

„Teeth Marks“ ist S.G. Goodmans zweites Album auf Verve Forecast, wie der Vorgänger wurde es produziert von Jim James von der Band My Morning Jacket. James über Goodman: „Ich denke, sie könnte
eine wichtige Rolle bei dem Heilungsprozess spielen, den wir unbedingt brauchen. Sie ist der lebende Beweis dafür, dass wir sein können, wer wir wollen, egal woher wir kommen.“

Dot Allison returns with a new solo album, Consciousology. After over a decade away, the former One Dove singer and songwriter broke cover in 2021 with Heart-Shaped Scars and this new album follows just two years later, as she hits a purple patch of songwriting. It’s also her first full release for Sonic Cathedral after contributing to Mark Peters’ acclaimed Red Sunset Dreams last year. Consciousology finds multi-instrumentalist Dot joined by the London Contemporary Orchestra, her new labelmate Andy Bell from Ride, who plays guitar on two tracks, and Hannah Peel, who is responsible for some of the string arrangements with both the LCO and a stellar group of Scottish string players. It expands on the styles and themes of the previous album, all while pushing everything just that little bit further – the songs sound bigger, more avant-garde and experimental and, occasionally, properly out-there and psychedelic. “I wanted to make some albums that felt like a set, exploring love, what lies beyond the visible and how all these aspects dovetail together,” explains Dot. “I see Consciousology a more psych Heart-Shaped Scars with a far fuller, more immersive sound and so, in that sense, it’s a more wayward, bolder, rule-breaking partner.” Right from the eye-catching artwork by PJ Harvey collaborator Maria Mochnacz it definitely does not play it safe. It veers from the techno-played-as-folk of opener ‘Shyness Of Crowns’ and ‘220Hz’ and the Linda Perhacs-meets-The Velvet Underground chug of the first single ‘Unchanged’ to the Mercury Rev-style fantasia of ‘Bleached By The Sun’, the Brian Wilson-esque harmonies of ‘Moon Flowers’ and the kaleidoscopic colour trip of ‘Double Rainbow’. Elsewhere there are echoes of Desertshore-era Nico, Jack Nitzsche’s work with Neil Young, Karen Dalton and Anne Briggs before the relative simplicity of the Tim Hardin-inspired closer ‘Weeping Roses’. It’s a brilliant, breathtaking record.

Die Lieder sind tadellos sequenziert und wirken alle wie ein Stück, verbunden durch emotionale Themen. 'Before the Poison' ist poetisch und beunruhigend. Es steht im Marianne Faithful-Katalog ganz für sich, ähnlich wie 'Broken English' - dieses Mal jedoch auf der anderen Seite des Spiegels. Nach ihrem geliebten Debütalbum "A Quality of Mercy" (2017) widmen sich RVG der kniffligen Alchemie, die Dringlichkeit des Rock, die Anarchie des Punk und das Einfühlungsvermögen des Pop zu einem Album zusammenzuführen, das sich vital anfühlt: "Feral" ist eine Katharsis, ein Aufruf zu den Waffen und eine offene Anklage der zeitgenössischen Selbstgefälligkeit. "Feral" wurde in den Head Gap-Studios mit Produzent Victor Van Vugt (PJ Harvey, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Beth Orton) aufgenommen. Der international bekannte Van Vugt lebt derzeit in Berlin und reiste nach Melbourne, um mit RVG zu arbeiten. "Nests" ist das Debüt des Vollzeit-Duos. Aufgenommen 2008 in ihrem Brooklyn Appartement, mit einem Fünfdollar-Verstärker und einer akustischen Gitarre aus einer Satanisten-WG ist das ein neu zu entdeckendes Juwel in Sachen bassloser Boy-Girl-Duo-Sound und Bedroom-Blues. Howlin Wolf und Millie Jackson könnten hier Taufpaten gewesen sein. Cat Power, frühe PJ Harvey, The Kills sind auch nicht weit. Jessica Larrabee hat mit ihrem rauhen, beseelten Gesang und ihrem intuitiven Gitarrenspiel eine sehr eigene Intensität und Präsenz. Ihre betörend schlafwandlerische Stimme ist durch und durch soulful. Ihr Partner Andy La Plant ergänzt das mit seinem direkten, wie zurückgenommenem Schlagzeugspiel kongenial. LaPlant kümmert sich dabei auch um die Produktion. Die Selbstbeschränkung der Mittel sowie der Ort an dem sie aufnehmen ist sicher ein Vorteil. ,Nests" ist ein New York Album und She Keeps Bees Musik ist wirklich blank bis auf die Knochen, bestimmt von weiblicher Stärke und Emotion, und buchstabiert alten Blues: Minimal, dunkel, roh, heilend.

A pivotal record for contemporary times; bright, free, adamant, optimistic. Brain Worms is RVG's fullest, most pristine album yet. All throughout Brain Worms, it's apparent that this is a band in very fine form. Album opener 'Common Ground' sets the tone for what's to come; a shiny, thrilling, punch of an album, with all the beloved RVG hallmarks. Vager's voice is unfiltered and commanding as ever when delivering her clever, not-quite-ironic lyrics. Here, though, those lyrics feel so much less resigned to yearning, and so much more defiant and joyous. 'Tambourine' is the only Covid song Vager wrote when "trying not to write Covid songs", and it's a painfully honest portrait of grieving mid-isolation. 'Brain Worms' tells the all-too-familiar story of a person falling down the internet rabbit hole and finding comfort in conspiracies. 'Nothing Really Changes' is a keys-heavy new wave-ish thing, while closer 'Tropic of Cancer' sparkles with Vager's self-assured new manifesto: I know what I'm like, and I know how I get. If you think I'm strange, you ain't seen nothin' yet. Bloxham, Nolte, and Wallace are flawlessly adept in bringing Vager's songwriting to life. Recorded in London at Snap Studios with James Trevascus (Nick Cave & Warren Ellis, PJ Harvey), all ten tracks surge with lush sounds and clear intentions and the magic of an acoustic guitar once owned by Kate Bush, given to her by Tears for Fears (who, legend has it, wrote 'Everybody Wants to Rule the World' on it). Between the four bandmates lead singer and guitarist Vager, guitarist Reuben Bloxham, drummer Marc Nolte and bassist Isabele Wallace this is the most confident they've ever felt in RVG. They've moved past their influences, pushed themselves, and tried new things. And they have made a record they can, by all accounts, call their best. "Brain Worms feels like the antithesis to what a post-pandemic record could easily be. For a band who were already writing music about being reclusive "we were depressed and not going outside on our first two albums" the enforced isolation and time to think gave Vager space to write about anything she wanted. Brain Worms" erzählt die nur allzu bekannte Geschichte eines Menschen, der in den Kaninchenbau des Internets fällt und Trost in Verschwörungen findet. Nach der Veröffentlichung des von der Kritik hochgelobten Konzertfilms, „Live At Bush Hall“, haben Black Country, New Road heute das entsprechende Live-Album zum Konzert angekündigt, das das Set ihrer drei aufeinanderfolgenden, ausverkauften Shows in der historischen Bush Hall im Dezember 2022 enthält.
Anfang 2022 veröffentlichten Black Country, New Road ihr chartsstürmendes neues Album, „Ants From Up There“, das in Deutschland sensationell auf #10 der Albumcharts und in England sogar auf #3 (ihre zweites Top-5Album Veröffentlichung in UK innerhalb von 12 Monaten, nach ihrem für den Mercury Prize nominierten Debüt „For The First Time“), das von Fans und Kritiker:innen gleichermaßen gelobt wurde, zahlreiche 5-Sterne-Rezensionen erhielt und auf Jahresendlisten auf der ganzen Welt auftauchte, einschließlich der Wahl zur Nummer 1 durch Fans auf r/indieheads, Rate Your Music und Nummer 3 durch Pitchfork-Leser:innen. Und das, obwohl das Album nur wenige Tage nach der Bekanntgabe des Ausstiegs von Frontmann Isaac Wood aus der Band veröffentlicht wurde. Nach dem Erfolg von „Ants From Up There“ und mit einem vollen Tourneeplan im Jahr 2023 vor Augen, beschlossen die verbliebenen Mitglieder Lewis Evans, May Kershaw, Georgia Ellery, Luke Mark, Tyler Hyde und Charlie Wayne, die nun zu sechst sind, komplett neues Material zu schreiben und aufzuführen. Sie spielten auf Festivals vor großen Zuschauer:innenzahlen, darunter triumphale Auftritte auf dem Primavera, dem Green Man und dem Fuji Rock, und traten in eine neue musikalische Phase ein, in der sie Songs, die erst wenige Wochen alt waren, weiterentwickelten. Außerdem tourten sie mit Black Midi durch die USA und spielten zwei ausverkaufte Konzerte in New York. Die Band hat sich dafür entschieden, die Idee einer Frontperson komplett aufzugeben und teilt sich stattdessen die Gesangsaufgaben mit Tyler Hyde, die bei einer Reihe von Tracks den Gesang übernimmt, darunter „Up Song“, der die Freundschaft und den Erfolg der Band mit dem Text „Look at what we did together, BC,NR friends forever“ feiert. An anderer Stelle übernimmt May den Gesang bei „The Boy“ und „Turbines/ Pigs“, einem umgehenden Fan-Liebling und einem der verletzlichsten Stücke der Band bis heute. Lewis hingegen singt bei „Across The Pond Friend“ und „The Wrong Trousers“. Mit diesem Schritt hat sich der Sound der Band weiter verändert, so dass weitere Einflüsse und Vielfalt in ihr Songwriting einfließen konnten. Als sich die Songs während des stetigen Tourens weiterentwickelten, beschlossen sie, konventionelle nächste Schritte zu vermeiden. Die Leute, die auf neues Material warten, bekommen acht neue, hervorragende Songs zu hören, aber nicht so, wie sie es vielleicht erwartet hätten. „Wir wollten kein Studioalbum machen.“, sagt BC, NR-Pianistin May Kershaw. „Wir haben die neuen Stücke speziell für Live-Auftritte geschrieben und dachten, es wäre eine gute Idee, eine Performance zu veröffentlichen.“
Das Ergebnis ist eine gefilmte und aufgenommene Live-Performance, bei der Greg Barnes Regie führte und John Parish, ein langjähriger Kollaborateur von PJ Harvey, die Musik abmischte, die an drei Abenden in der Londoner Bush Hall stattfand. „Es geht darum, den Moment einzufangen.“, sagt der Saxophonist und jetzige Teilzeit-Sänger Lewis Evans. „Eine kleine Zeitkapsel dieser acht Monate, in denen wir diese Songs auf Tour gespielt haben.“

Als Aldous Harding 2017 mit ihrem Zweitwerk "Party" ihr Debüt auf 4AD gab, war sie wohl nur absoluten Insidern der Indie-Folk-Szene bekannt. Als Straßenmusikerin entdeckt, mauserte sich die Neuseeländerin mit ihren Alben aber schnell zum absoluten Geheimtipp, wobei schon vom ersten zum zweiten Album eine deutliche und steile Lernkurve im Schaffen der Songwriterin zu erkennen war. Umso schöner, dass sie uns nun ihr drittes, wieder von John Parish (PJ Harvey, Sparklehorse) produziertes Album "Designer" präsentiert! Aldous Hardings Musik ist nichts für zartbesaitete Menschen, entwaffnend aufgrund der trostlosen Bildhaftigkeit und ihrer einnehmenden Instrumentierung, behandeln ihre Songs die Kernthemen des Lebens: Tod, Geburt, Leid und Liebe. Es gibt ein paar Happy Endings in ihren Geschichten, aber vielmehr geht es um ihre Kraft, wie sie in den Kampf zieht - mit der Anmut eines Tänzers und Einstellung eines Boxers.

Wir dürfen uns Karin Rabhansl als einen glücklichen Menschen vorstellen. Beschwingt dreht die Sängerin aus dem Bayerischen Wald auf ihrem fünften Studioalbum "Rodeo" die Gitarren laut. Der Rabe fliegt wieder - doch diesmal will er dorthin, wo er noch nie war. Auf "Rodeo" verschiebt Karin Rabhansl munter ihre eigenen Parameter. Geschickt zitiert die furchtlose Niederbayerin mit den bunten Ringelstrümpfen Rockhelden wie Led Zeppelin, Kyuss und Weezer und frönt ihrer tiefen Liebe zu Radiohead, Sigur Rós und PJ Harvey. Der Albumtitel "Rodeo" steht für den Ritt des Lebens. Die Mundart-Riot-Queen aus Trautmannsdorf Rock City erzählt ihre dunkelbunten Milieustudien nicht mehr nur in der ersten Person, sondern aus der neutralen Position der Beobachterin und Chronistin heraus. Bemerkenswert in befindlichkeitsfixierten Zeiten wie diesen ist dabei ein Detail: In den Texten wird genau beobachtet, aber wenig bewertet und vor allem nicht gejammert. Ganz eigentlich geht es auf "Rodeo" ums Durchhalten. Ums Klarkommen. Und darum, seinen ganzen Mut zusammenzupacken und das Heft in die Hand zu nehmen, wenn es sich nicht mehr ausgeht. Über Rabhansls Geschichten schwebt stumm die Erkenntnis, dass dieses Leben kein leichtes ist und noch nie war. Und dass die Welt kein per se guter oder schlechter, sondern oft einfach nur ein heikler Ort ist - seltsam und schön und zugleich doch immer voller Falltüren und Untiefen.

AMBER ARCADES ist das Pseudonym von Annelotte de Graaf, der niederländischen Singer/Songwriterin, die zwei EPs und einige von der Kritik gefeierte Alben aufgenommen hat, von denen das zweite, "European Heartbreak", durch "hints of Lindi Ortega and early Saint Etienne, breezy, dreamy pop more personal than political" (The Guardian) glänzt. AMBER ARCADES verlor kürzlich für einen Moment den Glauben an die Musik, gewann ihn dann aber wieder zurück und liefert nun ihr bisher atemberaubendstes Album ab: "Barefoot On Diamond Road", das am 10. Februar 2023 erscheinen wird - ihre erste Veröffentlichung auf Fire Records. Die erste Single "Just Like Me" ist ein offenkundig tanzbarer und triumphaler Song, der durch seine Stop/Start-Struktur eine beunruhigende und unvorhersehbare Schärfe in das Geschehen bringt. "There's a clear distinction from my last record ,European Heartbreak', which had a complete narrative. This record is completely the opposite" erklärt die Niederländerin in einem Statement zum neuen Album. Eingetaucht in eine alles verzehrende Wall of Sound ist "Barefoot On Diamond Road" wie MY BLOODY VALENTINE in akustischer Form; es sollte eigentlich nicht funktionieren, aber tut es trotzdem. Es ist eine Gegenüberstellung von Texturen, von sprunghaften, unruhigen Dancefloor-Beats bis hin zu symphonischer Kosmik, ein barocker Pop-Teppich, der mit Celli und Harfen bestückt ist, mit einer klagenden Steelguitar, die in der Ferne widerhallt. Die Schlagzeug- und Perkussions-Arrangements von Matt Chamberlain (PEARL JAM, BOWIE, DYLAN, ADELE, LORDE, SPRINGSTEEN, COHEN...) verleihen dem Ganzen zusätzliche Textur. Es ist ein Album von einnehmender Reife, gefüllt mit Zeitlupen und epischen Steigerungen, die es mit all der Dramatik in schwindelerregende Höhen heben - man denke an THE GUN CLUB, die sich mit PORTISHEAD zurücklehnen, alles könnte passieren, es ist ein imaginärer Film... und PJ HARVEY lauert im Schatten. Der gefeierte australische Sänger, Songwriter und The Go-Betweens Gründer Robert Forster kündigt sein achtes Soloalbum an: "The Candle And The Flame" erscheint am 3. Februar 2023 bei Tapete Records. "The Candle And The Flame" enthält neun Songs, geschrieben von Forster. Das Album wurde produziert von Forster, seiner Frau Karin Bäumler sowie Louis Forster (The Goon Sax) und gemischt von Victor Van Vugt (Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, PJ Harvey). Mit von der Partie sind die ehemalige Go-Betweens- und Warm Nights-Bassistin Adele Pickvance sowie Scott Bromiley und Luke McDonald (The John Steele Singers), der auch auf Forsters Alben "Inferno" und "Songs To Play" gespielt hat. Großartige, zutiefst inspirierte Musik entsteht manchmal ganz unerwartet - in richtig schwierigen Zeiten, aber manchmal auch in Zeiten größter Zufriedenheit. 2021 hatte Robert Forster eine Reihe von Songs fertig, die er in den vergangenen drei Jahren geschrieben hatte. Diese sollten die Grundlage seines neuen Albums bilden. Die Songs waren stark und emotional wie aus einem Guss. Selbst der Autor war überrascht: Sie boten eine neue Perspektive, waren persönlicher und erzählten von den Menschen, die ihm am nächsten standen. Es gab noch ein weiteres Songfragment - nur Musik und Melodie, noch ohne Text. Da Robert zeitgleich an seinem ersten Roman arbeitete, eilte es nicht. Die neuen Songs konnten auch noch eine Weile warten. Doch das Leben stellte ihn plötzlich vor ganz neue Herausforderungen: Im Juli 2021 erhielt Roberts Frau Karin Bäumler, mit der er auch gemeinsam Musik macht, die Diagnose Eierstockkrebs. Und so standen also erst einmal Krankenhaus, Tests und Chemotherapie auf der Agenda. Eine intensive Zeit voller Angst und Hoffnung. Wie so oft in ihrer seit 32 Jahren währenden Beziehung war Musik der Fels in der Brandung, der Zufluchtsort. "Die Aufnahmesessions für das Album fanden sporadisch über sechs Monate statt. Manchmal nur ein oder zwei Tage im Monat. Das war alles, was Karins Kraft und ihr Zustand zuließen. Wir mussten also "live" aufnehmen, magische Momente einfangen und auf "Gefühl" setzen. Und das ist der Sound des Albums geworden", sagt Robert.

His debut was recorded in the winter of 2003 with assistance from Texas
chamber pop collective The Earlies, followed by three albums of original material
and one all-covers album. In 2011, a near-fatal car crash paralyzed his arms for
months. He spent his recovery time listening to some demos he'd made before
the crash. The material eventually culminated in the darkest and most intensely
personal collection of songs from him thus far and garnered widespread critical
acclaim. (Micah P. Hinson & The Nothing). Since then, each record is a final
confrontation with himself, each song shakes with danger. I Lie To You, the new
Micah P. Hinson album, comes from five days and five nights of recording in
Irpinia, South Italy, with production by Alessandro Asso Stefana (PJ Harvey, Mike
Patton, Vinicio Capossela). Accompanying Micah and Asso are Raffaele Tiseo's
celestial strings, Zeno De Rossi metaphysic drumming and the double bass
gentleman Greg Cohen. On this new album he sings, with his weathered, husky,
prophet-like voice, eleven tales of love, loss and regret, which once again reveal
his heart as an artist laid bare.

On November 18th, Rural Tapes is back with a follow-up to the highly acclaimed debut album "Rural Tapes" from 2021. A year and a half ago, Arne Kjelsrud Mathisen was declared a genius by Mojo, who described his music as a hybrid between Kraftwerk, Air, Tortoise and Serge Gainsbourg. While the debut album was created over a period of almost 10 years, the music on "Inner space music" has been composed and recorded during one intense month in January 2022 in Mathisens own studio in the countryside of Grimstad, Norway. Having first met in 1991, music photographer STEVE GULLICK and JAMES JOHNSTON, founder of Gallon Drunk, began blurring the boundaries between audio and visual in 2004 when they formed their own band, '...bender'. They’ve maintained the habit ever since, with Gullick subsequently founding Tenebrous Liar and Johnston pursuing a career, alongside his work with PJ Harvey and a tenure in Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, as an acclaimed visual artist and painter.After working together on an art show in late 2019, the idea of making music again immediately resurfaced. Without any firm strategy, Johnston and Gullick began recording, unprompted, drawing upon a shared love of noise, folk, and classical. This became the album ‘We Travel Time’, a compelling and mysterious record that bravely embraced beautiful piano, voice, violin, and guitar to create a drifting haze, forging an imagined soundtrack which offers echoes of Big Star, Nico, Lee Hazlewood and Palace Brothers alongside the haunting influence of contemporary minimal classical. Due for release this coming November 18th via God Unknown Records, Johnston and Gullick have returned to their craft to create a stunning new selection of songs and moods, brought together for the album ‘Everybody’s Sunset’.
