Almost three decades on from their last release, Acid Jazz forefathers Galliano are back with news of their new LP ‘Halfway Somewhere’ which is being released on Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood Recordings on 30 August.

Born out of London’s underground clubs and warehouse parties of the mid to late eighties, with the debut single on the Acid Jazz label in 1988, Galliano came out of a culture that spanned music, dance, fashion, art, design, and the written word.

When they arrived as the first act on Gilles Peterson’s Talkin’ Loud label in 1990 with ‘Welcome to the Story’ (produced by Chris Bangs who invented the term Acid Jazz) dressed in Gabicci sweaters, beads and skullcaps they captured a scene built on re-invention. “We were all playing around with what we could get our hands on whether that was a seventies book on Jamaican style or old Last Poets and Watts Prophets records,” says Gallagher. “We’d been recycling things for a few years but suddenly everything had coalesced and you’ve got an amalgam that seemed quite solid.”
For their first album since 1997, Rob Gallagher and his partner, vocalist Valerie Etienne, are joined by Galliano stalwarts Ernie McKone on bass, Crispin Taylor on drums, and Ski Oakenfull on keys (with guests including saxophonist Jason Yarde and percussionist Crispin ‘Spry’ Robinson).

Where the old Galliano recycled records they heard at clubs, today they are responding to the kaleidoscopic global jazz scene - from Total Refreshment Centre in London to International Anthem in Chicago. More than forty years since they came together, Galliano are still only ‘Halfway Somewhere’, but listening to the album they are obviously having fun getting there. “I think the stars have to be aligned when you redo things,” says Gallagher. “Coming at it from this door is very different to the door we came into back then. But once it's existing it is something. But I’m still not sure what that something is.”

Skin Bank is the second full-length vinyl release from Italian techno deviant Crypto Order. Drawing inspiration from conspiracy theories, occultism, transhumanism and the New World Order, the project mixes confrontational themes and recycled propaganda with a haunting blend of dark beats and ominous melodies. Thanks to a prolific body of work amassed over the last few years, savvy listeners who have been paying attention to the right places will know him already as an unorthodox force to be reckoned with in today’s underground music world. A hallmark of Crypto Order’s work is an enigmatic deployment of both sound and vision. Heavy electro-style breakbeats and extra-terrestrial atmospheres create a warped-yet-familiar sound reminiscent of early techno, whilst a compelling visual aesthetic evoking echoes of the early industrial and power electronics scenes infuses it further with a sense of mystery. Themes of power and control have been par for the course in the music of Crypto Order and Skin Bank is no different, manifesting a world that invites the listener to question the reality around them and dive deep into the shadows of their own repressed and murky consciousness. This is a kind of electronic body music which sends you into a dystopian realm of chaos and intrigue, throwing up uncomfortable questions along the way.

Frank Rodas is the elusive creator of 2019's 'The Sellout EP' (Optimo Music) and one of the brains behind the excellent 'Out The Flat' label. While his previous release deftly dipped into Electro, Industrial and EBM sonics, 'The Ritual EP' sees the versatile producer travel in another direction, taking the listener on an ethereal, acid-tinged Tribal voyage.

The visuals also complement the EP's cohesive deeper sound. Decadence comics co-founder Lando's immersive artwork draws us further into this imagined far-future world, with a vast flooded landscape dominating the front cover, any remnant of civilisation succumbing to nature. A large 50x70cm panoramic poster is included with every copy of the record.

MESS is the next instalment of the Liars' recycled coloured vinyl reissue series, released alongside the album’s 10th anniversary.

Originally released in 2014, MESS was the sound of Liars not only facing their fears but also chewing them up and spitting them back out in all their technicolor glory. Written and recorded by Angus Andrew and Aaron Hemphill, produced by Angus and mixed by Timothy "Q" Wiles, this record was less concerned with place compared to previous albums, and saw the band back in their own studio in LA.

Angus explained at the time of release, "We go from one extreme to the other. Working on the last record was really doubtful and paranoid, and that's fine, but it just meant that when work started on this one, it was the exact opposite. It was way more instinctual, fun, and confident.”

One of the rarest, and greatest, horn instrumental dub albums of the seventies featuring the soaring saxophone of Tommy McCook in combination with Glen Brown, 'The Rhythm Master', is finally given a legitimate release.

The original title for this long playing release was initially advertised on the label of the seven inch release of 'Determination Skank' as 'The Sannic Sounds Tommy McCook', however the album was released in Kingston in 1974 in very limited quantities on a white label in a plain recycled cover rubber-stamped 'Tommy McCook Dub'. Three years later the set was released through Grounation in London, once again on a white label and without a cover, where it was known as 'Horny Dub'. It gave music lovers a fascinating opportunity to compare and contrast the work of Tommy McCook, one of the architects and builders of the Jamaican sound, with Glen Brown's role in taking and breaking it into pieces...,

Dub Store Records is the Ska, Rocksteady, Reggae, Roots and Dancehall reissue label run by the eponymous Tokyo based record store. The label aims at accurately covering the 50-plus years of Jamaican music, and pass on many rare and magnificent recordings, which are non-commercial and highly artistic. Suchi’s bouncy, airy productions are so organically deft that they almost belie the complexity that exists within. Prior to her !K7 debut the Oslo-born, London-bred, Delhiinfluenced DJ and producer found herself in a period of creative stagnation, while attempting to rediscover her own voice through production. After going back to the drawing board again and again she resolved to let go of overthinking, eschew the process, and let experimentation lead the way, revisiting some simmering sketches and work in new ways.

Ghungroo EP is the result of this reset, and rediscovers Suchi’s sense of playfulness through different production styles. It’s pressed on eco-friendly vinyl, PVR free and 100% recycled. “Ghungroo” is a homage to Suchi’s early years, and named for the small metallic bells strung around the ankles of classical Indian dancers. The track is equal parts cosmic, bassy and wavy, with a downwards bassline that plumbs the depths of low frequencies. The memory of early music passions emerges as the same melodic loop undresses and redresses in different guises - between breezy pads, glowing chimes and euphoric bells.

“Blåmerke” means bruise in Suchi’s native Norweigan tongue, and it leads heavily with double-time polyrhythmic drums, ravey rhythms and percussive bubbles popping. Triplets of synth stabs are artfully deployed with reverb and warped, stretched pads, bringing a whimsical twist to a track that is otherwise a tough-edged stomper. “Bottlepop” loosens up the tempo for a funky house framework, foregrounded by a big melodic synth riff. The track’s hookiness is enhanced by its old-school school feel, with distorted whistles and evocative pads. “Blåmerke” is then given a rework by Sam Goku who was chosen for his euphoric, dusty-sounding club tracks that hit hard; in his care the remix provides exactly that, via throbbing, shimmering, deep trippiness

Hot Water Music singer Chuck Ragan and End Hits Records will collaborate to release the sought-after THE BLUEPRINT SESSIONS of the country/folk singer for the first time in a deluxe double vinyl version. Originally, these recordings were only available through a monthly 7" subscription offered by Florida punk rock cult label NO IDEA. For over sixteen years, these singles have been out of print and have become sought-after collector's items. That's why Chuck Ragan and End Hits Records have decided to make these songs available again, combined on a double LP. The 16-track collection is packaged in a deluxe gatefold sleeve and comes with printed inner sleeves. All versions of the sixteen songs included are exclusive to this release and have been specially remastered for vinyl. The double album will be released worldwide through End Hits Records and will be available in four extravagant vinyl configurations. Additionally, End Hits and Chuck Ragan are excited to offer eco-friendly, recycled vinyl for the first time. Fifth volume of "The Encyclopedia of Civilizations", Abstrakce's collection of split LPs where selected artists offer their own insight into fascinating ancient cultures. This time the focus is on the enigmatic Babylon, visited by two of the label's favourite electronic bands currently active.

Berlin-based duo Driftmachine take us on a journey between the ancient cities of Akkad, Uruk and Ashur. Astonishing electronics with a superb and precise sound, floating somewhere between modular ambient, leftfield, abstract dub... Every detail has been carefully crafted in this complex architecture. Unconventional tribal rhythms recall obscure rituals, meanwhile warm, dynamic pulses contract and expand, interacting on their journey along the sandy roads of the Mesopotamian basin and leading you into a deep trance.

Glasgow-based project Komodo Kolektif delves into the Babylonian vision of magic through the figures of the Kassaptu (witches and wizards) and the use of Mandragora. A blend of both tribal primitivism and a futuristic vision is provided by their vast arsenal of vintage synths and effects units, eastern metallophones and traditional hand percussion. Deep, psychedelic electronics that capture the spirit of ancient Babylonian sacred ceremonies and their vision of the cosmos.

This deluxe edition includes an extensive booklet with notes and images about Babylon, to help you to immerse yourself in this fascinating civilization while you listen to the music. The sleeve is printed in the old way: letterpressed with metal movable type, as Gutenberg used to do it, on high-quality recycled papers.

Recital presents the first full-length vinyl LP by sound artist Asha Sheshadri. Whiplash combines elements of sound poetry, diary-like narrations, and delicate incidental music. Sheshadri has crafted a unique and marvelous album.

Asha Sheshadri is a visual artist and musician, who “meditates on meaning, context, and impermanence” (Joshua Kim). Moves freely between video, writing, sound, and photography. Her forms flow together to create unpredictable observations of the overlooked, while documenting personal and political networks within our collective, imperfect memory.

“This record is an alternate approach to the autobiographical ‘confessional’ – I wanted to stitch together some pivotal sketches in self-understanding and forgiveness. While their designs may seem affectively disparate, they are in fact quite interrelated. My intention (as with past recordings) is to task the listener with tracing the contours of the narrative (or lack thereof). Each track contains sound from video work, excerpts from writers I admire, ethnographic methods, recovered and recycled voice/text memos, photographs from personal and public archives, and research-driven fictions. These sources expand and collapse into each other, only to reveal the eponymous "whiplash". To me, the feeling of "whiplash" is the collision of: a refracted ambivalence towards what was once real, the endless cycle of reckoning with wherever "home" has taken place, the fraught process of anchoring one’s self in the wake of slow-release trauma, and how (if even possible) to translate all of this into artwork.” –Asha Sheshadri, 2023

Yarni and John swapped musical and visual influences, each feeding the other; songs and art developing as a single process. From The Clash to the Bauhaus movement, references merged, and in particular, Anni Albers became a touchstone for both. Every physical copy of this EP is different, the geometry of John’s prints echoing Ben’s music. The loping hip-hop jungle of the title track, the airborne house groove of “Red Meander”, the footworking jitter of “Agitator II”, the cerebral dancing of “Rummy” – all are inspired by John’s artistry. The EP is brought to you via Sound Records, a label focused on artistry, process, and artifacts – things you can feel, hold and treasure.
