Katagory V sind eine Progressive-Power-Metal-Band aus Salt Lake City in Utah. Anfang 1999 gegründet, sind bis dato fünf Studioalben erschienen: Auf "Present Day"(2001) folgten "A New Breed Of Rebellion" (2004), "The Rising Anger" (2006), "Hymns Of Dissension" (2007) und schließlich "Resurrect The Insurgence" (2015). Nun hat die Gruppe einen Vertrag mit High Roller Records unterschrieben, dessen erstes Resultat das brandneue Werk "Awaken A New Age Of Chaos" ist. Die Platte wurde von Dustin Mitchell (Bass), Curtis Morrell (Gitarre) und Matt Suiter (Schlagzeug) eingespielt, allesamt Teil der Originalbesetzung, plus Sänger Albert Rybka sowie Neuzugang Dan Coxey an der zweiten Gitarre. Das Album ist im Streamline Studio in Salt Lake City aufgenommen und von der Band selbst produziert worden. Für das Mastering zeichnete Alan Douches (Fates Warning, Cannibal Corpse) verantwortlich. Mit Riffmonstern wie "Empire Of Ignorance" und "Blood Siphon" oder melodischen Stücken wie "Absolute Divide" oder "Through Fate's Eyes" entpuppt sich "Awaken A New Age Of Chaos" als Meisterwerk des modernen Progressive Power Metal. In der Vergangenheit wurden Katagory V gerne mit Fates Warning, Queensryche, Hades, Sanctuary und Lethal verglichen. Laut Bassist und Gründungsmitglied Dustin Mitchell durchaus zutreffend: "Die genannten Bands haben uns ganz ohne Zweifel beeinflusst. Aber auch eine Menge Speed-, Thrash- und Doom-Bands der späten Achtziger und frühen Neunziger. Dazu Thrash-Metal-Gruppen der alten Schule - Realm, Death Angel, Helstar, Flotsam & Jetsam sowie Atrophy - und ferner auch härtere Melodic-Hardrock-Formationen, speziell aus Deutschland, da denke ich an Bonfire oder Jaded Heart." Das sollte all denjenigen, die mit Katagory V noch nicht vertraut sind, einen guten Eindruck davon geben, wie die Band klingt. Alles in allem ist das neue Werk "Awaken A New Age Of Chaos" von einer überraschend dunklen Grundstimmung geprägt: "Oh ja, dem stimme ich ausdrücklich zu", bestätigt Dustin Mitchell. "Diese Platte ist viel düsterer und auch zorniger als alles, was wir in der Vergangenheit gemacht haben, vielleicht mit Ausnahme unseres zweiten Albums. Im Verlauf unserer Karriere haben wir einige Tiefschläge einstecken müssen, weswegen die Band die letzten zehn Jahre auf Eis gelegen hat. Causa Sui return with the perfect companion to last year's tour de force, "From The Source". Whereas that record was a tightly structured piece of work, that condensed many aspects of the band's sound into a concise 45 minute LP, "In Flux" presents the more loose and impulsive side of Causa Sui. After an introductory suite in classic Causa Sui territory, with deep fuzz riffs and syncopated grooves, things gradually become more outlandish. Darkthrone began life in the late 80's as a thrash/ death metal act & progressed
through technical death/doom metal experimentation to become legends of the black
metal world & one of the original leading bands of the Norwegian scene, as well as
inspiring a whole generation of metal bands, as they continue as strong as ever to this
day.
'Under A Funeral Moon', Darkthrone's third album, was originally released by Peaceville
in 1993. The album is a bleak reflection of contemporary times, featuring harsh guitar
riffage & hateful vocals in what was the band's first 100% pure black metal opus; a
work completely stripped of the death metal traces of former releases & in its place, a
stark & primitive execution. This was aided by an intentionally lo- fi sound that is
powerfully cold & entirely unconcerned with any modern- day aesthetics. 'Under A
Funeral Moon' is the album that many Darkthrone fans hail as the ultimate manifesto
for Black Metal.
This edition of 'Under A Funeral Moon' is presented on double- disc CD format &
includes an audio master created for the album's 30th anniversary in line with the
original 1993 version, plus the 2013 commentary disc from Fenriz with his
recollections on the tracks & the time period.

There are bands that you feel you have known forever -- recent ones, new
ones even -- because you are already so familiar with what you know they are
going to offer, familiar with the anticipation and the need, with the pleasure
you expect them to, quite rightfully, provide the masses (by which I mean
people who have once considered calling their first-born Kang)
VERDICT is such a band. It has members of MEANWHILE, NO SECURITY,
WARCOLLAPSE, 3- WAY CUM, TOTALITAR, and too many other bands, and even
though I have never actually met any of them, I still have had more interactions with
them through (over)playing and rocking to their records than I have had with some
members of my family, which, to be honest, is definitely for the best. VERDICT is a
rather new (but experienced in the things of the D) kang hardcore band, and they know
exactly what they are doing and how to do it. Had they produced something different,
that would have completely taken me aback -- something horrendous like ska- punk
would have made so little sense that I would have had to quit punk altogether. Alright,
what about The Rat Race, then. This is the follow-up to last year's Time to Resign, and
this one has even more punch, fury, and pummeling power than its predecessor.
Unoriginal, in a good way, and thoroughly checking all the correct boxes: the
drumming is pure and relentless, the riffs' efficiency is religiously executed in a
"Scandicore 101" way, the vocals are angry, direct, and raspy. Think a joyous orgy
between NO SECURITY, UNCURBED, and TOTALITAR.
This is the kind of record that makes the world a better place to rock. Thank you

A fully licensed, analogue reissue -- sure, on cassette and not on vinyl, that's a
long story -- of the first Index LP, originally released in 1967
The "Black Album" is one of the all-time holy grails of psychedelia, with originals going
for more than $4,000. It is an album "with a really druggie sound, full of feedback and
fuzzy guitars. The vocals, when present, are not easily heard. The cover of 'Eight Miles
High' is very good, probably one of the best cover versions I have ever heard. The
original songs all follow a similar pattern as the covers, with hazy guitar riffs and loud
rhythms. The last track is particularly noisy and unstructured. Hidden in amongst the
echoing canyons of sound there's some really snotty punk attitude wrapped up in
trippy velvet fuzz."
This record is magnificent-- bizarre, atmospheric, amateurish (in the best of all
possible ways). It has a wonderful bleak sound, both droning and murky... the atonal
sound of 1960's rock that would leave the most lasting impression on what would
become future punk, post-punk and indie rock artists.
"Much has been written about this incredible band. Much of it isn't true. Index was
formed in the early spring of 1967 in Grosse Pointe, Michigan. I was 18 years old
when I met a chain-smoking 16-year-old named Gary Francis. Our conversation soon
got around to rock and roll. He told me that he and his friend, John Ford, were forming
a band. I told him that I played drums and we arranged a jam session at John's home
on Lakeshore Drive. Our first meeting was incredible. Our sound was full and
powerful. John's lead guitar techniques were fresh and innovative. After our first
sessions we knew we had something special. Index was born. Soon we hit the local
'sock hop' circuit, playing at high schools and teen clubs in the area. We poured our
unique sound out at The Hideout, Undercroft and G.P. War Memorial every weekend.
One afternoon John pulled out a new album he had been listening to. It was a new
band with a mind-shattering sound called 'The Jimi Hendrix Experience.' John played
some songs he had written inspired by this 'psychedelic' sound. Over the next few
days, 'Fire Eyes,' 'Shock Wave' and 'Feedback' were written. This album was recorded
in December of 1967 at the Ford estate. It is recorded in mono with literally one
microphone and with all instruments and vocals recorded at the same time. The cover
photo is of founders of a singing group John joined at Yale. The stiff, board- like
figures seem to characterize the exact opposite of this musical collection. This
reissue is taken from the original recordings. Nothing has been added and all songs
are in their original length. Over the years various bootleg copies of this album have

Also: in the coherent oeuvre it has become, it is perhaps her most consistent release yet. It's infectious as hell, carefully crafted, packs a punch and more accessible than ever before.



Everything is connected. Not just in the grand scheme of things - politically, culturally, socially,... - but also in the colourful universe of Karen Willems. A lifelong quest for profound experiences through organizing sound led to the crucial Terre Sol-series, four tapes released in 2020. Out of that fertile well, Grichte (2022) was born. A double LP that presented Willems as an original explorer as well as a committed bandleader, it was her boldest statement to date.

While the first (solo) album halfalready received a follow-up in K A A P M I J (2023), another tape release that suggested there's still a lot of ground left to uncover, Juju continues the work done on the second album half, with the Terre Sol Four quartet: Willems' voice, drums, percussion objects, keyboards and field recordings accompanied by the saxes of Marc De Maeseneer, Vincent Brijs and John Snauwaert. It was already something to behold on Grichte, swerving from introspective exploration to expressionist riff rock and semi-Dadaist avant-garde.

On Juju, the four-piece digs even deeper and the results are utterly spellbinding. One of the many attractions of Willems' recent work is that it combines relentless artistic experimentation with a commitment to broader socio-political issues. In essence, the artist tries to set up a discussion with her surroundings, sending out musical invitations to connect and participate, reminding ourselves of responsibilities that are too easily forgotten in these hectic, self-centered times. The refugee crisis is one, ecology awareness another, and it's hard not to consider "Voor De Stranden Verdrinken" ("Before The Beaches Drown") a caustic warning. Things need to change.

As said earlier, the music on Juju remains as adventurous as before, but this time around, the playing feels even more confident, diverse and punchy. If the album opener accentuates its urgency with a throbbing pulse and reed sirens, "Tako Deli" continues with rich vocal arrangements, roaring saxes and sweeping melodies. What follows strikes with vigor and consistency: "Nuuki" is as dense as it is infectious, while "Fuzzy Williams" manages to combine Ellingtonian abundance with Swans-like preaching.

And there's more, much more. Eccentricity and playfulness ("The Woo Woo Room, Dance Back In Style", "In Open Veld") go hand in hand with smoldering exercises in tension and release ("Koortsdromen") and a ridiculously infectious call for connection in antisocial times ("Come Vai"). Guest contributions by Nabou Claerhout, Kapinga Gysel, Esther Lybeert and Filip Wauters enrich the band's sound considerably. By the time you reach album closer "When Daytime Lands", Willems takes you on a short trip through that eerie soundscape-land she previously explored.

In short: Juju fits perfectly in Willems' output. Also: in the coherent oeuvre it has become, it is perhaps her most consistent release yet. Goed nieuws voor punkfans en nostalgische herrieschoppers: BLPRecords brengt de eerste twee LP's van Belgian Asociality opnieuw uit! De legendarische albums 'Belgian Asociality' (1989) met nummers als Boederie, Miep Miep en Keerbergen en 'Astamblief' (1991, met klassiekers als Bompa Punk, Jupiler Reggae en Stagedive zijn opnieuw verkrijgbaar op vinyl, allebei in een beperkte oplage van 500 exemplaren op gekleurd vinyl.

Gewapend met snedige teksten, genadeloze riffs en een onmiskenbaar Belgisch gevoel voor absurdisme, groeide Belgian Asociality uit tot een van de meest iconische en eigenzinnige punkbands van het land. Met hun unieke mix van punk, hardcore en maatschappijkritische humor schopte de meest asociale punkband van Belgë vanaf eind jaren '80 keihard tegen de schenen van de muziekscene. Cruel Entertainment is a catalogue of contrasts - dissonance and harmony, hardcore crunch and post-rock grandeur, complexity and catchiness - that adds a vibrant new dimension to the second phase of their discography, spanning thus far from 2019's landmark Heavy Age up to the "vivid, starry-eyed psychedelia" (AllMusic) of 2024's Underwater Over There. Opener and lead single, "Rock Candy", roars in with a gale of feedback, pounding drums, and nimble bass, until a latticework of howling guitars ushers us into a more goth-tinged space. It's a characteristically intricate, energetic composition that flows with remarkable ease between its parts, and wastes not a moment of its three minutes. "Monster Collecting" brings a rare combination of melancholic and driving energy, reminiscent of avowed heroes New Order, but ups the ante with a tight, fastpaced rhythm section and litany of guitar lines, until opening up into a cascade of reverberating textures and tenuous sweetness. According to Ford, the title Cruel Entertainment refers to "the hardships of being an artist and musician in the crowded, imbalanced world of social media and streaming," where the completion of a new work demands that the creator also be a promoter, content strategist, and agent, among many other intensifying challenges. Pointedly drawing inspiration from noisier, rowdier bands - including Fugazi, Quicksand, and Cherubs - here they seek a much-needed catharsis in the ongoing fight to keep the creative soul intact. Second side standout, "Monty Donahue", typifies this form of release, as massive, mid-tempo percussion leads a fluid low end theme - inspired by the dual bass assault of Dianogah - and Swatzell's chords burst into shimmering nebulas across a labyrinthine arrangement that's equally loud and beautiful. Title track, "Cruel Entertainment", is a mosaic of sound for which Ford's bass provides the mortar: taut drums list between the channels, washes of guitar stretch to the horizon, and metallic heaviness punctuates the drift. There is a confident immensity here, proving that, although Unwed Sailor have witnessed a wild amount of changes in the music industry, their knack for creating complex, vital, and masterfully produced work remains untouched.

Annihilation Time are an incendiary mix of '70s rock and '80s hardcore, with riffs personified by their legendary bar brawls and bloody-faced performances. Then again, constant touring with Municipal Waste and Caustic Christ - during their murky beginnings - can have that effect.

Seit 2011 und mit sieben Alben hat das explosive Trio immer größere Erfolge gefeiert und sich Aufmerksamkeit und Anerkennung bei Rock-Fans und Jazz-Anhänger:innen gleichermaßen erarbeitet. Der Bandname lässt eventuell auf Jazz schließen, nur dass in der Besetzung vom Hedvig Mollestad Trio Klavier, Saxophon oder Trompete nicht auftauchen. Stattdessen: Gitarre, Schlagzeug, (Kontra-) Bass und Songs, die gerne mal die Melvins beschwören (Blood Witch). Jazz ist hier also in erster Linie Rock und keine Kammermusik. Mollestad lässt ihre Gitarre dabei unablässig und vom Overdrive getrieben jaulen, tänzelt die Skalen auf und ab, rifft sich durch die halsbrecherischsten Soli und spielt dennoch geerdet mit dem satten Groove von Schlagzeug und Bass. Nach arbeitsreichenJahren (solo, mit Weejuns, Soundtracks und Auftragsarbeiten) verspürte Mollestad den starken Drang, zum Kern zurückzukehren, der immer das Trio war, mit dem alles 2011 und dem starken Debütalbum Shoot! begann. Die Aufregung war groß, als es ins Studio ging, und da ein Großteil der Musik recht kompliziert ist, mit vielen kleinen Variationen und langen Strukturen, waren die Studio-Sessions extrem fokussiert und konzentriert. Hedvig betont, dass das Hauptziel des Trios darin besteht, immer Spaß zu haben, ob im Studio oder auf der Bühne, und diese Freude mit den Zuhörern zu teilen. Beim Hören von Bees In The Bonnet wird deutlich, wie sehr das Trio es vermisst hat, gemeinsam neue Musik zu machen, und dass sie sowohl als Songschreiber als auch als Musiker sehr gut sind. Frontfrau Hedvig Mollestad präsentiert sich hier nicht nur als Riffmeisterin, sondern auch als Sologitarristin, die den bereits angestellten Vergleichen mit Tony Iommi und Jimmy Page mehr als gerecht wird.
