The 20th installment of Saddle Creek’s Document series features Dean Johnson, the Seattle-based singer/songwriter whose heartfelt storytelling and undeniable charm have been quietly building a devoted fanbase across the globe.

For years regulars at Al’s Tavern might murmur to each other about Dean Johnson behind the bar. There were nudges and whispers that he might just be the best songwriter in town. They spoke of his talent like a family secret –Seattle folklore. How many times, and for how many years, did Dean elusively reply to some variation of the question, “When will there be a record?”

In May of 2023, there finally was. Nothing For Me, Please, Dean Johnson’s debut album, was released on his 50th birthday.

Deerhoof haben sich schon vor langer Zeit als eine der großartigsten Rockgruppen des Planeten etabliert - wer das für übertrieben hält, hat noch nicht genug Zeit damit verbracht, Deerhoof zu hören - das wahnsinnig erfinderische Quartett behandelt jedes seiner neuen Alben als eine Gelegenheit zur kreativen Wiedergeburt. Und doch sind sie irgendwie auch zutiefst zuverlässig, eine seltsame, aber wahre Beschreibung für eine Band, die so kreativ rastlos ist. Man weiß nie, wie ein neues Deerhoof-Album klingen wird, außer dass es immer nach Deerhoof klingen wird. Die Band wird durch solche Paradoxien definiert, wie "Noble and Godlike in Ruin" erneut bestätigt. Ihr neuestes Album ist entweder ein Porträt einer Welt, die in monströsen Hass, Entmenschlichung und Dollarzeichen abgleitet, oder ein eindringliches Selbstporträt der Band als Monster: ein intelligentes, sensibles, hybrides Wesen, das unermüdlich von Liebe singt, sich aber zunehmend von dieser Welt entfremdet. Die Musik ist fröhlich und ahnungsvoll, kybernetisch und zutiefst menschlich, alles zugleich. Streicher, die an avantgardistische Kammermusik und klassische Horrorfilm-Soundtracks erinnern, prallen auf Gitarren- und Basslinien. Das Schlagzeug ist manchmal gefiltert und klingt fast elektronisch, aber kein Computer könnte einen so funkigen und dynamischen Rhythmus erzeugen, bei dem jede winzige Variation von einem Snare-Schlag zum nächsten Welten der Möglichkeiten vermittelt. An der Spitze steht die unnachahmliche Altstimme von Satomi Matsuzaki. Eine Stimme der Einsamkeit, deren schlichte Ruhe seltsam außerhalb des Mahlstroms der Band zu stehen scheint, zu dem sie mit ihren zackig-präzisen Bassläufen selbst beiträgt. Als Einwanderin der ersten Generation in den USA hat sie nie versucht, ihren japanischen Akzent oder ihre Karaoke-esken Vortrag zu verbergen. Auf "Noble und Godlike in Ruin" wirkt dies abwechselnd als Ausdruck von Einsamkeit und als kühle Provokation gegenüber Systemen der Unterdrückung und Kontrolle. ,Kindness is all I needed from you", singt sie auf dem epischen Albumabschluss ,Immigrant Songs`. ,But you think we're in your house." Nicht lange danach explodiert der Song, sein eng gewickelter Art-Pop macht Platz für mehrere Minuten heulenden Lärm. Auch wenn das Thema düster sein mag - wie könnte es anders sein - tragen die Songs trotzigen Optimismus in ihrer Weigerung, sich den Konventionen oder überlieferten Weisheiten zu beugen. Da ist diese berühmte Zeile von Dylan Thomas über das Wüten gegen das Sterben des Lichts: "Noble and Godlike in Ruin" fühlt sich ein wenig so an. Die Welt mag untergehen, aber Deerhoof gehen schwungvoll unter.

Annie A, the one-off collaborative project between Félicia Atkinson, Time is Away, Christina Petrie and Maxine Funke, arrives on A Colourful Storm with an inquisitive, exploratory composition evoking questions of inconstancy and reconciliation, vastness and finitude and the sometimes cruel deception of human perception. Who will conduct our dreams if we never wake?

It is a geographically diverse yet like-minded ensemble whose seeds were sown during an A Colourful Storm show in London, where time on stage was shared by Atkinson, Time is Away and Petrie. Atkinson had previously found solace in Time is Away's Ballads (ACOLOUR041), Funke's Seance (ACOLOUR035) and particularly the voice of poet Petrie, whose delivery drifts from a wide-eyed stream of consciousness to crystalline sensory expression. It is the perfect accompaniment to Atkinson's hushed tones, spoken sensitively like a mother to a resting child.

Atkinson's evocative sonic landscapes are formed from keyboard, voice and organic materials collected from life on the dramatic coast of Normandy, as well as field recordings from places far and wide. She breathes life into liminal spaces, the sound of wind, whispers and the distant clatter of rocks conjuring visions of places both beautiful and eerily familiar. Time is Away delicately arranges the field of sounds, their weaving and layering likened to the assembly of an Anni Albers textile. The spirit of Albers guides the piece, Petrie's recounting of her loom and thread a symbol of her endurance, vitality and seeking wonder in intricacies. The piece also features an exclusive concluding track by Maxine Funke, whose meditation on vulnerability confronts and surrenders herself to the enchanting natural world.

"No sign of Rotten Leaves" is Selma French's second album and draws inspiration from life's paradoxes.

Selma French is a songwriter and musician renowned and revered within the Norwegian folk scene. She grew up with traditional music and has played and created music all her life. Her musical inspirations include Linda Perhacs, Nick Drake, Judee Sill, Frøkedal, Sundfør and Sandy Denny.

Her debut album Changes Like the Weather in the Mountain was released in 2022 to critical acclaim and was ranked among the top Norwegian albums of 2022 by notable Norwegian newspapers such as Dagsavisen and Aftenposten. In the fall of 2024, she did a lot of touring in the UK together with Euros Childs (Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci / Teenage Fanclub).

Selma has also toured extensively throughout Scandinavia and is a member of the bands such as Masåva, Frøkedal & Familien - (with whom she toured in the UK as special guests of Teenage Fanclub), Sondre Lerche and Norwegian Grammy award winners Morgonrode. Her music is widely recognized in her native country and has recently featured as the theme song in the hit Viaplay T.V series Furia.

Her music reflects an admiration for Norwegian and English folk music and is infused with an airy, enigmatic energy. Her rich landscape of guitars, wurlitzer, fiddles and high pitched choir voices manages to convey a roar of frustration, obscure portraits of the present and a gathering force of hope.

Per och Olof finden ihre Stärke in der Einfachheit und im Minimalismus.Mit einem geradlinigen, direkten und sich oft wiederholenden Ansatz legt ihre Musik das Wesentliche frei und lässt es für sich selbst sprechen. Das mag nach Faulheit oder Naivität klingen, aber in diesem Fall geht es eher um Perfektion.Musikalisch lassen sich Parallelen zum Punk und zu Künstlern wie Kjell Höglund und I.B. Sundström ziehen, doch Per och Olof nehmen innerhalb der schwedischen Popmusik einen ganz eigenen Platz ein - einen, der den Hörer auf eine Weise fesselt und bewegt, wie es nur wenige andere schaffen.

Die Violinistin Esther Abrami wirft auf ihrem Album "WOMEN" neue und erhellende Schlaglichter auf Komponistinnen. "Women" legt den Fokus auf die außergewöhnlichen Talente von 14 Komponistinnen aus unterschiedlichen Epochen und Genres und enthält neue Kompositionen der Oscar-Preisträgerinnen Rachel Portman und Anne Dudley sowie neue Arrangements von Werken historischer Komponistinnen wie Pauline Viardot, Chiquinha Gonzaga, Teresa Carreño und Ethel Smyth. Esther Abrami hat selbst einige dieser Stücke neu arrangiert und mit "Transmission" ein eigenes Orchesterstück für das Album komponiert. Im Mittelpunkt von "Women" steht die Weltersteinspielung von Ina Boyles Violinkonzert, eine poetische, spätromantische Komposition. Esther Abrami hat jedes Stück für das Album aufgrund einer besonderen emotionalen Verbindung zu den unterschiedlichen Frauen hinter der Musik ausgewählt: "Solange ich mich erinnern kann, war die einzige klassische Musik, die ich je gehört habe, von männlichen Komponisten geschrieben. Ich habe über 15 Jahre lang klassische Musik an renommierten Musikschulen studiert, aber in all den Jahren kein einziges Stück von einer Frau gespielt. Es war nicht so, dass ich sie diese Stücke aktiv vermieden hätte - sie waren einfach nicht Teil des Kanons. Ich fragte mich 'haben Frauen jemals klassische Musik komponiert?' und es stellte sich heraus, dass sie es taten, und ich entdeckte einen verborgenen Schatz. Ich verbrachte Monate mit Recherchen und tauchte in eine völlig neue Welt der Musik und faszinierenden Geschichten von Frauen ein, die im Schatten der Geschichte geblieben waren. "Women" führt diesen Weg konsequent fort und versammelt eine Reihe außergewöhnlicher Mitwirkenden, wie das ORF Radio-Symphonieorchester Wien unter der Leitung von Dirigentin Irene Delgado-Jiménez, die Pianistin Kim Barbier, die Harfenistin Lavinia Meijer und das Esther Abrami Quintet."Ich bin unglaublich glücklich mit einem so großartigen Orchester und tollen Musikerinnen an einem so persönlichen Projekt zu arbeiten. Hermon Mehari and Tony Tixier first met in 2010, in their early twenties, in a club on Paris's Rue des Lombards for a concert with saxophonist Rodolphe Lauretta. Over the next decade, the two musicians took opposite paths, while continuing to collaborate on two continents. The American trumpeter moved to France to discover European culture and the world cultures that coexist there, while the Parisian pianist of Martinican origin spent several years in the USA, immersing himself in the roots of jazz and Afro-American music.



In June 2024, the two musicians, who had been working for fifteen years on numerous albums and collaborations, and whose musical understanding had continued to be forged in clubs, festivals, and on recordings, met again for a duet at the TOC-TOC festival in the Puisaye region, where Antoine Rajon was a collaborator. Enthusiastic about the idea, the artistic director of the KOMOS label invited them back to his home in this corner of Burgundy to record this Fender Rhodes/trumpet formula. He called on sound engineer Christian Hierro, who traveled with his mobile studio for the album recording, then mixed and produced the master in his studio in Lyon, using the best analog equipment and his expert ear.



At dusk on November 12, 2024, the duo played eight tracks in a single, direct take on a 33-minute magnetic tape.



Four unusual cover versions were carefully chosen. "Maimoun" is a composition emblematic of pianist Stanley Cowell's style, also recorded by Marion Brown. George Duke's "The Black Messiah" was captured live by Cannonball Adderley's band on an album of the same name but has never been released as a studio version. "Hello To The Wind" was created by Bobby Hutcherson in 1969, sung by Eugene McDaniels. Finally, "Laini," dedicated by the great Martinican pianist Marius Cultier to one of his daughters, is a mazurka dear to Tony's heart.



Each of the musicians also contributed a composition: Hermon with "This Is Our Fantasy," written especially for the session, and Tony with "Poem For The Oppressed," a moving composition with an explicit title. Lastly, the duo improvised two tracks, without repetition, in mutual symbiosis and echo.

SOUL SONG captures a moment without enhancement, transformation, or additives, far removed from contemporary virtual technologies.

Vilhelm Hasselgren is a Gothenburg-based producer and DJ with a focus on Jungle and productions that move between 160-170 bpm. Vilhelm focuses a lot on complex rhythms and ambient soundscapes and takes inspiration from both older and modern Jungle, as well as other electronic acts such as Basic Channel, Mala, Skee Mask and Arkajo. Vilhelm tries to create soundscapes that move between different musical starting points.
He has previously released on Rezonant Body, Canape Records, Bukva Sound and Of Paradise Records. Also has an upcoming EP releasing on Bukva as well as a V.A on Western Lore. In 2025, Vilhelm also has a residency at London-based Subtle Radio.

Vilhelms words:
Central Line EP is an EP that I'd myself consider to be my debut EP. The tracks were created within a two-and a half year span, with some tracks being re-worked and replaced. Later ending up with the final track-list, which I am very happy in how it ended up in the end. One of the tracks that were later added onto the EP being 1000 a co-production with my brother Einar (Local Arms), which we spontaneously recorded at our parents house over a weekend.

I mostly start from percussion, onto bass and later melody in my productions. The title track "Central Line" was started when I lived in Brighton for half a year, together with Theo Soderlund (Theomega). The Eski sample is a bit tricky one, but wanted to experiment with it, further I chopped an Amen and a Think break with an idea to create a pretty simple rhythm that could leave the riff to speak for itself. Even though the tracks were created within a pretty long span of time, I feel like they portray a sound that I want to further explore and produce at this point. Also Arcne adding a monster remix of Central Line that has been getting lot of love. Could not be happier to release it on Bukva Sound which prior releases I think really captivate a sound that has been really inspiring throughout the process.

Justin Sullivan has been living something of an artistic double life for the last 8 years. He’s been playing drums in Los Angeles’ Flat Worms and getting back together with his NYC bandmates in The Babies, but he’s also been crafting his own songs under the name Night Shop. Under this moniker, Sullivan has released two LPs and two 12” EPs and toured supporting, Widowspeak, Shannon Lay and Waxahatchee.

Waxahatchee’s Katie Crutchfield once described Sullivan as “a well-read modern day Buddy Holly” and on his new record, The Beloved Returns, he raises the bar of both the literary allusions and the rock’n’roll. The record’s title track was inspired by Thomas Manns’s 1939 fictionalized biography of Goethe titled Lotte in Weimar: The Beloved Returns and themes of desire, obsession and the places they send you are all over the record. On the sonic end, the record is louder and faster than any Night Shop record before, a result of Sullivan’s collaboration with the Summer Cannibals’ Jessica Bourdeaux who produced the record, with songs like the opener “Ode To Joy II” coming fast out of the gate quickly followed by “Let Me Be the Lamb.”

Moor Mother is an American musician, poet, and interdisciplinary artist known for her avant-garde and experimental work. The Great Bailout is an expansive meditation that acts as a non-linear word map about colonialism, slavery, and commerce in Great Britain. Featuring guest contributions from Lonnie Holley, Angel Bat Dawid & Sistas of the Nitty Gritty, Vijay Iyer, Mary Lattimore, and more, it"s Moor Mother"s most uncompromising vision to date. Moor Mother has gained recognition for her unique blend of spoken word, noise, and electronic music, addressing themes of race, gender, and socio-political issues. She hails from Philadelphia and has been an influential figure in the city"s vibrant arts and music scene. She has received critical acclaim for her albums, with reviewers praising her fearless approach to sound and her thought-provoking lyrical content on albums like "Jazz Codes" and "Analog Fluids of Sonic Black Holes", showcasing her boundary-pushing sonic experiments.

Placenta is the fourth collection of broadly imaginative and highly collaborative Carlos Niño & Friends music released on International Anthem since 2021. But perhaps more notably for the zeitgeist of today, it is the first new music to be released by Carlos Niño & Friends following the November 2023 release of André 3000’s New Blue Sun – an album which Carlos produced alongside André, while co-writing, performing, and co-mixing every song. The announcement of Placenta also comes while Carlos is in the middle of tours with André to support New Blue Sun, where Carlos wields an immense presence as music director, bandleader, and percussionist, and performs alongside many of the same musicians that are present on his recent & Friends albums, including this new one.

Placenta is announced on the 1st solar return of Moss Niño, of whom Carlos and his partner Annelise are Earth parents. Their experience of pregnancy, labor and delivery were all profoundly impactful for Carlos. Becoming a father again (a whole 25 years after the birth of Azul Niño, who has become a regular artistic collaborator for Carlos) he felt total Inspiration for this set of recordings, and hence it is perhaps the most conceptually-grounded Carlos Niño & Friends album we've yet to present–fully connected to the spirit of family, birth, and "how we get here."

In Niño’s words, Placenta is “dedicated to Mothers, Children, Babies, Aunties, Doulas, Midwives, Birthworkers...,” and a short list of track titles includes: "Love to all Doulas!," "Some Rest for the Midwives," "Real Vital Organs," and "Generous Pelvis." The centerpiece of the album, the sprawling "Placenta, Nourishment, New Home, The Galaxy," is an unbelievably vivid immersion in the sonic architecture of Niño's memory-scape...like being present in his energy field...or being present in a birthing room, or maybe even being born yourself. And it just might be the most powerful, unique piece of music Niño has ever created.

Deutschland, deine Städte. Der Schauplatz aller Songs und Erzählungen des Berliner Duos Die Anteile ist klar umrissen: Sie interessieren sich für die dunklen Ränder, für Ecken, in denen lange niemand mehr gekehrt hat. Holzvertäfelte Eckkneipen, asphaltierte Garagenhöfe, aber auch mitten in die Scheinwerfer blicken sie, die ihr Licht werfen auf alles, was einmal subversiv und anders war. "Pelzwerk", das nun bei Tapete Records erscheinende Debütalbum der Anteile, wurde geschrieben in einem feuchten Berliner Kellerraum. Einige Meter unter der Erde erblickte eine Vielzahl an Figuren das Licht, die auch einem düsteren Varietétheater entstammen könnten: Nazi-Erben, die dem Sheriff hinterher reiten, Sammler, die Vergangenheiten in Vitrinen ausstellen und Zirkusdirektoren im Gewand von Bürgermeistern sind im "Pelzwerk" beschäftigt. Dabei sind Die Anteile keine Kinder von Traurigkeit: Das Debütalbum ist umspült von quirligen Synthielines, überschwänglichen Gitarrenriffs und liebevoll garniert mit allerlei Sounds aus dem Krautrock-Zauberkasten. "Ich beherrsche wenig / aber du würdest mir auch schon reichen", singen sie auf dem Titeltrack. Bass und Drum Machine zielen auf die Beine, die Stimme - mal als Sprechgesang, mal oddly elegant - auf den Kopf. Hinterher ist man immer schlauer - "Und ich wurde aufgeklärt / vernünftig ist was sich rentiert" - oder zumindest nass geschwitzt. "Pelzwerk" vereint viele Genres in sich. Ist es EBM, ist es IDM oder - Gott bewahre! - NNDW? Ein begeisterter Konzertbesucher beschrieb Die Anteile einmal als "freundliche DAF". Doch eigentlich sind Die Anteile auch dafür zu verspielt. Statt mit Diktatoren tanzen sie eher im 4-eck, packen den Vocoder aus und halten die tanzende Menge mit knarzigen Basslines in Schach. Die Anteile sind im Nebenberuf Gärtner:innen. Ungeachtet der heimischen Witterungsbedingungen pflanzen sie munter verschiedenste musikalische Gewächse an. Prominent im Rundbeet wurzeln die japanischen Elektropioniere von Yellow Magic Orchestra in der selben Erde wie Proto-Industrialisten der Marke Crash Course in Science und Pyrolator. Am Gartenzaun treiben Post Punk-Bands wie Talking Heads und Magazine Blüten, während im Nachbarbeet gerade neu mit Electroclash gedüngt wird. One of the UK’s most exciting breakout stars of the past decade, Rebecca Lucy Taylor AKA Self Esteem emerged from cult favourite status to mainstream hero following the huge success of her empowering, truth-telling 2021 single ‘I Do This All The Time’. The song resonated intensely as a perfect example of Taylor’s affectionately termed ‘trojan horse’ or ‘salad and chips’ approach, fearlessly packing important, emotive messages into witty, resonant pop music.

Self Esteem’s wildly acclaimed second album Prioritise Pleasure quickly followed, tackling the hypocrisies and joys found in her experiences of modern day womanhood across dating, friendship, comparison culture, self love, women’s safety and sexual assault and much more. Prioritise Pleasure received Mercury Prize, BRIT Award, Sky Arts and NME Award nominations, was crowned The Guardian and Sunday Times Culture’s Album of the Year, and ‘I Do This All The Time’ was also named The Guardian’s #1 song of 2021.

Quite the opposite of an overnight success, Taylor spent a decade as one half of indie duo Slow Club before adopting the pop star persona she’d always dreamed of. She released her first Self Esteem album Compliments Please in 2019, featuring fan favourite singles ‘The Best’, ‘Girl Crush’ and more.

Gathering a passionate and vast legion of fans ever since, Taylor has appeared on The Graham Norton Show, Celebrity Gogglebox, Friday Night Live & Taskmaster, performed three times on Jools Holland including the NYE Hootenanny, graced the covers of magazines from Grazia to NME to Sunday Times Style, and is one of a handful of artists to have been playlisted across BBC Radio 1, 2 and 6 Music simultaneously.

Having reached new heights of acclaim, Taylor continued to grow, diversify, and create in 2024. Branching out into the world of acting, Taylor starred in a regular role in the Sky series SMOTHERED before completing a run playing Sally Bowles in the multiple Olivier Award-winning production of 'Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club' in London's West End. Starring alongside Jake Shears (Scissor Sisters) as Emcee, the pair’s time on stage was extended due to popular demand and showcased the sheer range of talent in Taylor’s repertoire. m Herbst 2022 reiste Jerome Reuter, der luxemburgische Singer-Songwriter und Kreativkopf von ROME, erneut auf die grüne Insel, um dort einige entspannte Wochen mit seinen irischen Freunden zu verbringen. Wie nicht anders zu erwarten war, wurde viel getrunken und gelacht. Es entstanden aber auch Songs. Und am Ende der Reise erblickte eine weitere, faszinierende "Dublin Session" das Licht der Welt.

Wurden die Tracks der ersten Dublin Session noch im legendären "Sonic Studio" in der irischen Hauptstadt aufgenommen, zog man sich für die zweite Session bewusst in die grünen Hügel von Wexford County zurück, um in Brian Brodys "Ballycale Studio" vollkommen ungestört und ganz ohne Zeitdruck musizieren zu können. Alle daraus entstanden Lieder der "Dublin Session II" sind unveröffentlichte Neukompositionen, denen Dank renommierter, irischer Musiker der landestypische Folk-Sound innewohnt.

Auf "The Dublin Session II" verbindet sich auf fast schon ganz natürliche und vor allem sehr harmonische Art und Weise ROMEs ureigener Stil aus Proto-Folk mit dem Klang des Traditional Irish Folk. Hierfür rekrutierte Co-Produzent, langjähriger Freund und musikalischer Mitstreiter Brian Brody (Rack & Ruin) kurzerhand das Who-is-Who irischer Musiker wie Ronan O Snodaigh (Dead Can Dance, Kíla) am Bodhran, Eoin O Cionnaith (Van Morrison, Christy Moore) an den Uilleann Pipes, Matthew Hanaphy am Banjo und den Tin Whistles, Goshia Gasior auf der Violine und Andy Slowey am Bass.

Unter den Kompositionen befinden sich Lieder wie das eingängige, fast tanzbare "Hold the Line" oder das bitter-böse "The Tsarist Army", die einen Kontrapunkt zu melancholischeren Kompositionen wie "My White Rose" und "Muse of Fire" setzen. Nicht unbeeinflusst vom Kriegsgeschehen in Europa und den Zeichen der Zeit entstand so ein multilinguales Kleinod mit Liedtexten auf Französisch ("La Peau Dernière"), Deutsch ("An der Landwehr"), Englisch und Gälisch ("Eirigh Anois!" u.a.).

Totgeglaubte leben bekanntlich länger und so stellt man mit ROME fest: Der europäische Geist ist wohlauf!
