Ekoplekz is Nick Edwards from Bristol, UK. He made waves in the 2010s with his distinctive brand of lo-fi analogue electronica for labels such as Planet Mu, Mordant Music, Punch Drunk, WNCL and Perc Trax, while also playing live around Europe. In recent times, Nick has preferred to remain a low-key presence, but Selvamancer are excited to have coaxed him back with his first vinyl release in 5 years! Dirtbokz is an 8 track mini-album that showcases the Ekoplekz sound of now. Recorded as always on four track cassette using hardware analogue synths and drum machines with minimal post-production, the tracks retain a raw immediacy and the dirty, dub-infused sound that he was always known for. For the Dirtbokz LP, Ekoplekz reaches back to the early acid, electro and primitive rave of his youth, all mixed in a hazy reverb-soaked echo chamber inspired by his love of '70s Jamaican dub reggae. 'Frampton Kotteral' takes a gentle detour into more melodic, sentimental territory and the set closes with the forlorn acid comedown of 'Phader'.
Phoebe Rings is a dream-pop band offering a unique blend of introspective yearning with celestial danceable grooves. Their self-titled debut EP, a hopeful collection of musings, out on Carpark Records, is a testament to the distinctive musical style of Auckland jazz-school-trained pianist and songwriter Crystal Choi. Across six tracks, the EP is a love letter to some of the band’s influences: Studio Ghibli films, Zelda and Stardew soundtracks, Bossa Nova, Stereolab, and 90’s Korean ballads.
In 2020, the band played their first gig in a ‘funny side room’ during a festival at Auckland Town Hall. Choi’s songwriting was brought to life with Alex Freer on drums, Simeon Kavanagh-Vincent on guitar and synths, and Benjamin Locke on bass. Choi says she knew the tracks had to be recorded after the band played the songs better than she could ever imagine. And so, remotely through the COVID-19 lockdowns, the band started recording the EP.
“Daisy” is the vibrant leading single, with the shimmery refrain “Ooh-wee-a-waa” and the uplifting mantra: “When you’re next to me, the world’s full of daisies.” The swirling synths fizz on the skin like warm sun, promising growth and new starts. “Cheshire” is an Alice in Wonderland-inspired trip through the rabbit hole, pacing in anticipation. “Like a Cheshire cat, it grins and disappears in moments when you accept yourself,” explains Choi. Locke and Choi finished the lyrics one evening, huddled in the corner of a local underground music venue, with references to Murakami’s book Dance Dance Dance.
Choi grew up in Seoul, developing a palette for K-pop and retro sounds. The city-pop influence of “January Blues” shines through, with Choi crediting one of her favourite songs from the ’80s: “연극이 끝난 후 After Play”. The track explores her disconnect with the summer break. “In the Northern Hemisphere, January is winter,” says Choi. “I missed that a lot, and I don’t vibe with the beach.”
“Spissky,” chimes in with Choi’s lilting vocals reminiscent of childhood lullabies, inspired by a lonely-looking castle she saw on tour with Princess Chelsea in Slovakia. While “Ocean” leans into its mumble-core roots, taking a leaf from the Cocteau Twins. There’s an external shift in the EP, with “Lazy Universe” being the most energetic track, evolving with the band’s chaotic sci-fi experimentation. Asking, “Are you still waiting for a kiss?” Choi is self-critical and urgently speaks up from being passive.
The members of Phoebe Rings are cemented in the musical ecosystem, balancing other projects and full-time work. Yet Sundays will always be carved out for Phoebe Rings to dream up imaginative, world-building tunes — often with a Nintendo game soundtrack in the background as inspiration.

The album is a strikingly honest exploration of their relationship with gender and identity, and specifically it tracks Walk’s experience undergoing top surgery, from making the decision to the process itself.
Breymer utilizes a rich array of instrumentation elevated by a standout vocal performance, raw lyricism, and textured production by Grammy winning Tyler Chester. Exquisite, layered vocal harmonies across the record enforce its reflective themes, and at times the conversation seems to be internal, with much of the record posing questions such as “Am I better now?”, “Am I on the wrong path?”, “Who am I?”. ‘When I Get Through’ examines a journey of self-discovery, it’s introspective and transformative, and it’s a testament to the strength of its lead; someone willing not just to make the choice, but to document the emotional experience in its entirety.
On their decision to change their artist name, Walk explains that “this album feels really transformative to me. I was compelled to have some kind of separation between my artist existence and personal existence. Bremer is my middle name and has always been intriguing to me; I like that it’s androgynous and uncommon. I changed the spelling, and it feels like it suits my music, particularly parallel to this album, and I was ready for a fresh start. Choosing a name requires a certain amount of agency and intentionality. This album feels bold and gender non-conforming, and Breymer felt like it encapsulated all of that”.

Aus den Tiefen von Post Punk, Cold Wave und Dancefloor meldet sich Levin Goes Lightly mit neuem Album zurück: Numb ist der Titel des mittlerweile fünften Longplayerst. In den für ihn so charakteristischen schrägen Bildern erzählt Levin Goes Lightly von toxischen Beziehungen, dunklen Lebensabschnitten und der großen Liebe. Der melodische Gesang wechselt zwischen Deutsch und Englisch, das musikalische Grundgerüst sind treibende, elektronische Beats, kühle Synthesizer, und gleichzeitig warme Orgeltöne und wavige Gitarrenparts. Im Song "Headbanging" fragt er "Is it beautiful when it"s sad? / Ist es so schön, weil es so traurig ist?" - und liefert doch selbst den Beweis, dass bittersüße Traurigkeit schön und trotzdem sehr tanzbar sein kann. Die Songs handeln von tief im Meer lebenden Liebenden (oder Seeungeheuern?), die gemeinsam nur zum Licht streben oder die so lange in die Sonne blicken, bis sich ihnen ein gemeinsamer Fleck ins Auge einbrennt - "damit man sich an diesem Fleck für immer erkennt". Darüber, dass man einsehen muss, dass man selbst das Chaos ist, auch wenn man noch so sehr dagegen ankämpft und über Hände, die nur dann nicht taub sind, wenn sie den andern berühren. Engel, die doch nur schrecklich sind und sich auflösen im Rausch. Levin Goes Lightlys Musik ist sophisticated und treibend, seine Auftritte immer schweißtriefend und glamourös. Bei einigen Songs denkt man an die frühen New Order, Boy Harsher oder Grauzone und an die Wärme von Beach House. Das Songwriting ist wie bei den vorherigen Alben geprägt von musikalischer Vielseitigkeit und tiefgründigen, aber auch merkwürdigen Texten. Mit seinen melancholischen Melodien, oft begleitet von kraftvollen Beats, gelingt es ihm tiefe Emotionen einzuweben. Wie der Song selbst angelegt als eine 'Ode an die Freundschaft', kam es bei den Dreharbeiten, bei denen er Studenten während der letzten ausgelassenen Tage ihres Semesters begleiten wollte, zu einer dramatischen Wendung, die dem Song im Nachhinein eine ganz neue Bedeutung gab. Ein bewaffneter Einzeltäter erschien auf dem Campus, erschoss einen Freund der Gruppe und verletzte zwei weitere Menschen. Nach reiflicher Überlegung beschlossen die Beteiligten, die Dreharbeiten fortzusetzen und den Opfern mit dem Video ein Denkmal zu setzen.
Zur Feier des 10-jährigen Jubiläums des gefeierten Debütalbums „Islands“ von Bear's Den aus dem Jahr 2014 wird das Vinyl in einer neuen limitierten Farbe veröffentlicht. RUN-DMC DOWN WITH THE KING 30th ANNIVERSARY Pressed On Red, White and Black Double Colored Vinyl With Commemorative Numbered OBI Limited To 2000 Copies Thirty years ago on May 4, 1993, Run-DMC made one of the greatest comebacks in Hip-Hop history with the release of their 6th studio album Down With The King. To understand the significance of this feat we have to go back a few years. Coming off an amazing four-album run ending with the platinum album Tougher Than Leather, Run-DMC released their 5th studio album, Back From Hell, to lackluster sales. Did Run-DMC fall off? Did the emergence of gangsta rap push them off to the side? It was sad to see your Hip-Hop heroes take a fall. Then in 1991, a 12-inch remix came out for the single "Back From Hell" featuring Chuck D and Ice Cube and fans took notice. It would be two more years before anyone would hear from Run-DMC again. In March of 1993, a new single and video “Down With The King” debuted on Yo! MTV Raps featuring the new Hip-Hop Gods Pete Rock and CL Smooth paying homage to The Kings calling back verses from Sucker MCs over a dope signature Pete Rock beat. The video would be in constant rotation on Ralph McDaniels Video Music Box, YO!, BET’s Rap City and more. Fans watched it over and over to catch all the cameos, everyone from Eazy-E to the Native Tongues Family of De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest. The anticipation was building, but would the album live up to the lead single that knocked it out of the park? On May 4, 1993, the album dropped on CD, Cassette, and Vinyl. Run-DMC enlisted The Bomb Squad from Public Enemy, Q-Tip, EPMD, Jermaine Dupri, Kay Gee of Naughty By Nature, and Pete Rock to produce the album with a special appearance by Tom Morello rocking out his guitar emulating DJ scratches he made famous with Rage Against The Machine. Their rhyming was as enthusiastic and powerful as they were on their debut album 10 years prior. Run-DMC, the self-proclaimed Kings of Rock and original Kings of Hip Hop were indeed back. The album debuted at #1 on the R&B/Hip-Hop charts and #7 on the Billboard 200 and would go Gold within two months.
