Maria BC ist mit ihrem dritten Studioalbum und zweiten Release bei Sacred Bones zurück: "Marathon". Entstanden aus einem Gefühl der Dringlichkeit, masochistischer Entschlossenheit und Ausdauer, zeigt Marathon, was es heißt, weiterzumachen, egal ob man sich wehrt oder einfach nur überlebt - man ist auf lange Sicht dabei. Auf diesem Album beschäftigt sich Maria BC mit Themen wie Widerstand, Umweltzerstörung, persönliche Umbrüche und Zerstörung, die alle mit musikalischer Kraft und Energie verflochten sind. Während sich ,Spike Field" aus dem Jahr 2023 wie ein langer Atemzug anfühlte, ist ,Marathon" eine dynamische Erkundung von Ausdauer, Vorwärtsstreben, Widerstand, Beobachtung und Überleben. ,Für dieses Album habe ich mich entschieden, weniger Zeit mit der Produktion und Aufnahme zu verbringen und mehr Zeit mit dem Songwriting", erklärt Maria BC. ,Das Ergebnis ist meiner Meinung nach thematisch konsistenter, textlich prägnanter und präziser - ich wollte etwas Dynamischeres und Abwechslungsreicheres schaffen." Auf einer Makroebene analysiert Maria BC die zerstörerischen, ausbeuterischen Energiesysteme, die unsere Welt antreiben: ,Maschinen, die um jeden Preis weiterlaufen, bis sie sich selbst zerstören", wie sie es beschreibt. Das Album, das an der Westküste geschrieben und aufgenommen wurde, ist sowohl weitreichend als auch unmittelbar und reicht klanglich von luftigen Akustiksongs bis hin zu glitchigen, verzerrten Tracks, die Chaos und Desillusionierung vermitteln, während gleichzeitig eine lyrische Linie beibehalten wird. In seinen dreizehn Songs scheut "Marathon" keine schwierigen Themen wie Grausamkeit und Mitschuld, Verlust und Zerstörung. Seit etwas mehr als einem Jahrzehnt hat sich EXEK ganz leise zu einer der faszinierendsten Bands der Welt entwickelt, die sich von Album zu Album verändert und weiterentwickelt und sich nach und nach geöffnet hat, ohne jemals diese seltsame, unergründliche und insgesamt essentielle Eigenschaft zu verlieren, die sie so großartig gemacht hat - so EXEK-mäßig. Nun bringt die Post-Punk-Band aus Melbourne - Sänger und Chefarchitekt Albert Wolski, Gitarrist Jai Morris-Smith, Schlagzeuger Chris Stephenson, Synthesizer-Spezialist Andrew Brocchi, Trompeterin und Sängerin Valya YL Hooi und Bassist Ben Hepworth - ihr siebtes Album und erstes für DFA raus: ,Prove The Mountains Move". Es ist, wie Wolski sagt, ,ein bisschen epischer" als alles, was er bisher aufgenommen hat, ein üppiges und unverhohlen melodisches Set surrealistischer Popmusik, das sich in Widersprüchen suhlt. ,Dieses Album ist in seiner Machart experimentell", sagt Wolski, ,aber es klingt nicht unbedingt experimentell." Dafür gibt es einen guten Grund. Die Arbeit begann an einem kalten Nachmittag im Juni 2023, als Wolski und Stephenson sich in den Pelican Refill Studios in Melbourne trafen, um die Drums aufzunehmen - das erste, was sie immer machen. Danach ging Wolski alleine nach Hause und fing an, die aufgenommenen Beats und Breaks durchzugehen, wobei er sich von den Drum-Sounds zu Melodien und Basslines leiten ließ, Loops und Layers erstellte und so die Grundlage für ,Prove The Mountains Move" schuf. ,Ich fühle mich wohl dabei, alleine wie ein verrückter Wissenschaftler herumzutüfteln", sagt er. ,Ich habe es auch genossen, ohne klare Absicht auf Aufnahme zu drücken. Meistens führte mich das in eine interessante Richtung, die mein Bewusstsein wahrscheinlich nicht gesucht hätte." Und doch gelangte Wolski irgendwie zu seinem direktesten Werk seit Beginn des Projekts, neu inspiriert von der Klarheit und Prägnanz des Mainstream-Pop, der starken und unbestreitbaren Anziehungskraft einer einfachen Gesangsmelodie. Nachdem die berühmt-berüchtigten strengen COVID-Lockdowns in Melbourne beendet waren, wollte er einfach draußen bleiben. ,Die Arbeit an neuer Musik trat gegenüber dem Feiern mit Freunden in den Hintergrund", sagt er. ,Und diese Partys waren voller großer Hits als Soundtrack - Sachen, die ich selbst nicht wirklich hörte, Sachen, denen ich seit meiner Jugend nicht mehr begegnet war. Aber in den frühen Morgenstunden des Sonntags klingt ,Alive" von Pearl Jam, als würde man mit Gott sprechen. Genauso wie ,All I Wanna Do" von Sheryl Crow und ,Feel" von Robbie Williams. Krautrock und Dub waren immer noch in meiner DNA, aber die Musik, die ich zu machen begann, war vielleicht etwas unbeschwerter und vielleicht auch etwas emotionaler." Das heißt nicht, dass man hier Spuren von Eddie Vedder in Wolskis Gesang erwarten sollte, aber die Einsätze fühlen sich auf ihre eigene Weise ähnlich an - so klingt es, wenn EXEK wirklich alles geben. Nimm zum Beispiel die schwebenden Synthesizer des Openers ,Sidestepping" oder die gewaltigen Gitarren von ,Arriverderci Back Pain", die pyrotechnischen Klavierklänge von ,Don't Answer (When They Call)" oder die Bowie-artige Melancholie von ,You Have Been Blessed". Die Arrangements wirken offener, der Sound fokussierter. Es fällt nicht schwer, Wolski zu glauben, wenn er sagt, dass er viel Zeit damit verbracht hat, seine Mixe von ,Prove The Mountains Move" mit einigen der wichtigsten Alben, die je aufgenommen wurden, darunter ,Abbey Road", zu vergleichen. Aber alles ist relativ. Und textlich bleibt Wolski weiterhin verschlüsselt. ,Jeder Song ist eine Vignette in einem abstrakten Milieu, sei es ein experimentelles Chiropraktik-Geschäft am Flughafen oder spärlich bekleidete Kreaturen aus Staub in einem Food Court. Egal wie verrückt das auch sein mag, es gibt Themen und Motive auf dem gesamten Album, sowohl textlich als auch musikalisch, die sich in verschiedenen Songs widerspiegeln und aufeinander Bezug nehmen." Diese Dissonanz zwischen direkt und indirekt, glatt und strukturiert, schattig und glühend, verrückt und ausdruckslos ist die treibende Kraft im Herzen dieser Songs, seiner bisher besten.

Joe Holmes ist ein amerikanischer Hardrock- und Heavy-Metal-Musiker, der vor allem für seine Arbeit als Tournee-Gitarrist für David Lee Roth und Ozzy Osbourne bekannt ist. Er fing im Alter von 9 Jahren an, Gitarre zu spielen, und wurde später Schüler der Gitarrenlegende Randy Rhoads. Im Dezember 2024 brachte Holmes ,Cross Eyed Stare" raus, die erste Single aus seinem kommenden Album, das seinen Namen trägt. Die Platte, die Holmes zusammen mit Brent Hoffort geschrieben hat, zeigt seine musikalische Verbindung zu Robert Trujillo (Metallica) und Mike Bordin (Faith No More) von der Ozzy Osbourne Band, wobei Sänger Robert Locke die Gruppe komplettiert. Beide Soloalben von Holmes wurden zusammen mit Rich Mouser produziert und von Mouser im Mouse House in Altadena, Kalifornien, aufgenommen und gemischt.

Zoals we van Admiral Freebee gewend zijn, is er ook ruimte voor humor en een introspectieve blik. Maar vergis je niet, een schoothondje is hij niet (No One’s Puppy). In slottrack Dog That Never Dies gaat de voet van het gaspedaal en legt het enige ingetogen nummer het album neer, als een synthese van alle thema’s die aan bod komen. Your energy boost in record form: that’s how the new Admiral Freebee album sounds. Born from a primal desire to make music with his friends aka heroes and dive into the studio. Opening track Seeking A Friend sets the tone: drums swell, a sharp riff takes centre stage and Van Laere lets out a raw ‘Armageddooon’. The world is on fire and Admiral Freebee does not turn a blind eye, but first we have some fun. Uptempo, groovy, danceable even, with funky synths and a bunch of infectious HEYs: for nine songs good times are all over the place, from first single Q&A With Myself to bangers like Future Fathers Of Utopia and The Hunger. As always with Admiral Freebee, there’s also room for humor and he doesn’t shy away from introspection either. And make no mistake: Tom Van Laere is no lapdog (No One’s Puppy). Closing track Dog That Never Dies is the only intimate song on the album and sounds like a synthesis of all the album’s themes. And rest assured: Admiral Freebee is doing fine, and both him and his music are bursting with joy. So leave your worries behind for a moment and have some raw fun.

If you know your death metal history, you are then well aware that 'Hating Life' stands for one of GRAVE earliest and gnarliest demo days classics, later on rerecorded on their immortal debut 'Into The Grave', later on once again used as the title of their fourth full-length, back in 1996. So when a brand new entity proudly waving an old-school death metal flag and bearing the same name seemingly creeps out of nowhere, you're entitled to except the same kind of HM-2 drenched, tribute-in-disguise and downtuned death metal innit? Well, for the time being, the answer would be yes. And no at the same time. Not so hidden behind the whole thing is Santi, guitar player and founding member of ATARAXY, one of Spain most respected and relentless old-school death metal outfit since 2008. "The whole process was very spontaneous, the result of me jamming with a Gibson Les Paul and a HM-2 pedal and ending up soon with great riffs, melodies and plenty of ideas. With ATARAXY having now a very specific personality, it felt great to rediscover primitive death metal roots." Describing HATING LIFE overall sound as "putrid and raw", he doesn't deny the obvious GRAVE nod, especially since the opening track/intro of their debut recording is simply called 'Into The Grave'. "You can call it a tribute or a declaration of intent. The first GRAVE material was and remains a clear exponent, among many others, of the kind of death metal that truly motivated me to compose the tracks for this."

Als wir uns auf den Weg zum Zug zurück nach London machten, steckte Ruth heimlich drei Bier aus dem Rider der Mekons in ihre Tasche und konnte sich dann nicht von der Zitrone trennen! Von Gesetzlosigkeit erfüllt, sind wir aus dem Zug ausgestiegen, nachdem uns gesagt wurde, dass wir nicht einsteigen könnten, weil wir die falschen Fahrkarten hatten. Wir haben die Biere getrunken, bevor der Zug den Bahnhof verließ, aber, liebe Leser, die Zitrone wurde nie verzehrt. Known for electrifying village ceremonies and carrying the fever of Toliara across continents, he takes a sharp turn — not away from trance, but deeper into its core.

Recorded in just three days at Studio Black Box with analog wizard Peter Deimel, Fanjiry strips the tsapiky band down to a single guitar and a single heartbeat. Damily plays alone, yet fills the space completely — bass, rhythm, melody, pulse, and breath merging into a dense and vibrating sound. Every riff is architecture, every harmonic a door opening onto memory, childhood landscapes, and nights where music heals, binds, and exhausts the dark.

There is no nostalgia here, no museum of tradition. Fanjiry is a new frontier for tsapiky: raw, precise, suspended between earth and sky, born from craft and necessity. With the album Cousin Zaka Vol. 3, Blundetto is closing the series he began in 2019, ending it on a psychedelic note.

A voodoo spirit of harvests, Zaka is the guardian of agricultural activities and, by extension, a protector of nature.


It is under his protection that Max Guiguet delivers his wandering music and instrumental escapades — those in-between states he strives to capture in his notebooks, mood journals composed between each album and collaboration.

Rooted in the landscape and nourished by long observation, it allows itself to distort, stretch and blur the outlines of this peaceful scenery.

For this last volume of Cousin Zaka, the atmosphere is psychedelic, hippie, and free.


A freedom drawn as much from the poetry of Francis Picabia as from that of musicians Pierre Barouh, Moondog, and Eden Abhez — free spirits whose work informed the composition of this record. The idea is to take a path and let oneself be carried away, to drift as one would during a long walk in the forest.

Cousin Zaka, Vol. 3 is a wide, gentle experience, reminiscent of 1970s freedoms.

I started writing the songs for V at the beginning of 2023, and the demos were finished by the end of that year. While creating this material, I kept returning to one thought: everything we take for granted - everything that feels stable and permanent - is, in reality, incredibly fragile. Nothing lasts forever, and the sense of things slipping away can hit much sooner than we expect. I tried to translate those feelings into sound. At that time, a lot of difficult things were happening in my life, things I didn't know how to cope with. Music became a form of therapy - a way to process emotions I couldn't express in any other way. In early 2024, we began working through the songs together as a full band. After finalizing the arrangements, we spent the rest of the year recording them. The process stretched over many months, split into several sessions across different studios. I didn't want to rush anything. I wanted, as always, to refine every detail the best we possibly could. Soon you'll be able to hear the result for yourselves. For me, this album is something deeply personal. It's an act of opening up to anyone who chooses to listen - a glimpse into things I can't fully describe with words, into what I felt and who I became during that period. I'm incredibly happy that together with my friends from the band, we've created another record. What comes next_ time will tell.

While creating this material, I kept returning to one thought: everything we take for granted - everything that feels stable and permanent - is, in reality, incredibly fragile. Nothing lasts forever, and the sense of things slipping away can hit much sooner than we expect. I tried to translate those feelings into sound. At that time, a lot of difficult things were happening in my life, things I didn't know how to cope with. Music became a form of therapy - a way to process emotions I couldn't express in any other way. In early 2024, we began working through the songs together as a full band. After finalizing the arrangements, we spent the rest of the year recording them. The process stretched over many months, split into several sessions across different studios. I didn't want to rush anything. I wanted, as always, to refine every detail the best we possibly could. Soon you'll be able to hear the result for yourselves. For me, this album is something deeply personal. It's an act of opening up to anyone who chooses to listen - a glimpse into things I can't fully describe with words, into what I felt and who I became during that period. Vor ein paar Jahren kam mir beim Lesen von Thomas Manns ,Der Zauberberg" eine Idee. Diese Idee kam nicht von der Geschichte im Buch, sondern von den Spuren und der Atmosphäre, die darin beschrieben werden. Das war's: eine hörbare, atmosphärische Reise durch die Erinnerungen an einen Ort, der irgendwo hoch in den Schweizer Bergen verloren gegangen ist. Ein Jahrhundert nach den Ereignissen, die im Buch beschrieben werden, sind wir an den Ort der Handlung gereist, um die noch vorhandenen Geräusche einzufangen, die damals zu hören gewesen sein könnten, und die Geister, die vielleicht noch immer dort umherwandern. Zauberberg basiert auf diesen Aufnahmen, auf Aufnahmen der Musik, die Hans Castorp (die Hauptfigur des Romans) spielte, auf akustischen/elektronischen Instrumenten und digitaler Bearbeitung. Das Ergebnis ist eine Beschwörung von Zeit und Dauer, eine Erkundung dessen, was bleibt und was verloren geht, eine Meditation über die Auflösung und das Fortbestehen der Aura, die alles umgibt.

Scupltures is composer and pianist Derek Hunter Wilson’s third solo album, an ode to the ancient and contested shorelines of the Pacific Northwest. Deeply embedded in place, the six longform pieces that make up the album reflect the artist’s journey through grief (including losing his father) and the passage of time, each one built upon loops created from extended sessions with harpist Joshua Ward. Like the foggy, moss-encrusted locations that inspired the album, Sculptures has a timeless feel to it, shadowed by the rumblings of a colonial system in decay.

Award-winning poet Mathias Svalina composed a poem for the album, entitled “A Dream for Sculptures”. It is reproduced on an insert that accompanies each LP.

Derek Hunter Wilson is a composer and multi-instrumentalist based in Portland. He has released two solo albums on Beacon Sound (Travelogue, 2017; Steel, Wood, & Air, 2019), as well as a collaborative album with Location Services entitled Wake (2022). In 2018 he collaborated with visual artist Gregory Euclide for his Thesis Project label, resulting in a split 10" with Spanish musician Rauelsson. He has additionally worked with poets Zachary Schomburg and Brandi Katherine Herrera for several sound and performance pieces, and has performed live on the West Coast and in Berlin, sharing the stage with artists such as Colleen, Amulets, Patricia Wolf, Pulse Emitter, and Liima.

Mute welcomes German synthesizer and producer duo Felsmann + Tiley to the roster with the release of their new album Protomensch. On Protomensch (German for “proto-human”), Felsmann + Tiley blend shimmering synthwave, pounding trance, and introspective IDM with synth-pop-infused tracks featuring guest vocalists including London’s Pet Deaths and Australian artists The Kite String Tangle, Woodes, and Laius.

Pacific Avenue, das Indie-Rock-Quartett aus Gerringong, hat sich mit seinem rasanten Aufstieg zu einer

Als das Oscar Peterson Trio im August 1964 mit Trompeter und Flügelhornist Clark Terry ins Studio
ging, um dieses Album aufzunehmen, spielte es bereits seit fünf Jahren zusammen. Die drei Musiker
funktionierten wie eine perfekt geölte Swing-Maschine. Großzügig überließ Peterson seinem Gaststar viel
Raum, um als Solist auf seinen Hörnern zu glänzen. Beim Publikum kamen insbesondere die beiden spaßigen Blues-Nummern ”Mumbles” und ”Incoherent Blues” gut an, in denen sich Clark Terry erstmals als

Grammy-Gewinner Hans-Martin Buff (Peter Gabriel, Prince etc.) in einen brandneuen Mix umgesetzt,
zusätzlich wurde das Original-Artwork um zahlreiche unveröffentlichte Fotos sowie jede Menge spannender
Making-Of-Anekdoten ergänzt. Ein Kultalbum erstrahlt in neuem Glanz!
„Es ist spannend, nochmal zurückzuschauen und sich daran zu erinnern, wie unsere verrückte Reise damals
angefangen hat“, erklärt Klaus Meine. „‘Lonesome Crow‘ ist eine Liebhaber-Platte für Die-Hard-Fans, die

Aufgenommen am 25. Juni 1962 live im Tsubo, einem Café in Berkeley, Kalifornien, zeigt „Full House“
den legendären Gitarristen Wes Montgomery auf dem Höhepunkt seiner Kreativität, begleitet von einem
beeindruckenden Ensemble mit dem Tenorsaxophonisten Johnny Griffn und dem Wynton Kelly Trio, das
durch seine Zusammenarbeit mit Miles Davis gereift war – dem Pianisten Wynton Kelly, dem Kontrabassisten Paul Chambers und dem Schlagzeuger Jimmy Cobb.
All About Jazz beschrieb das Album später als „einen Vorgeschmack auf das, was kommen und viel zu früh
verloren gehen sollte“, und die Darbietung wird diesem Versprechen gerecht. Was den Umfang angeht,
ist auf „Full House“ für jeden etwas dabei. Montgomerys lyrische Zurückhaltung kommt in „I’ve Grown
Accustomed to Her Face“ zum Tragen, während der mitreißende Bebop von „Blue ’N’ Boogie“ und der
lateinamerikanisch angehauchte Groove von „Cariba“ die ganze Bandbreite des dynamischen Zusammenspiels der Gruppe offenbaren. Untermalt von einem begeisterten Live-Publikum bleibt „Full House“ eine

gepresst bei RTI, mit vollständig analogem Mastering von den Originalbändern bei Cohearent Audio und

After decades spent shaping the sound of southern Madagascar and becoming one of the defining voices of tsapiky, Damily returns with Fanjiry, his most intimate and focused record to date. This is Jah Wobble"s first post punk LP in recent years following travel and dub records. The brash guitar driven tracks reflect his continuing preoccupation with the declining state of the nation. Driven by his experience working each week at a music based community project in Merton, with Jon Klein, it is reminiscent of Mark Stewart. Angry in an empathetic, constructive way it resolved with the beautiful instrumental "Brockwell Lido". Like much of his work these days, much of the lyrical content comes while traversing London"s transport system. Jah Wobble, is an English bass guitarist and singer. He became known to a wider audience as the original bass player in Public Image Ltd (PiL) in the late 1970s and early 1980s; he left the band after two albums. Following his departure from PiL, he developed a solo career. In 2012, he reunited with fellow PiL guitarist Keith Levene for Metal Box in Dub and the album Yin & Yang. Since 2013, he has been one of the featured pundits on Sunday morning"s The Virtual Jukebox segment of BBC Radio 5 Live"s Up All Night with Dotun Adebayo. His autobiography, Memoirs of a Geezer, was published in 2009. Jon Klein Is an English guitarist and producer, best known for being a member of Siouxsie and the Banshees for seven years, from 1987 until 1994. He also founded Specimen and The Batcave nightclub. Klein has worked for other artists including Talvin Singh and Sinéad O"Connor. More recently he has worked as a co-producer and guitarist with Jah Wobble.

On a Sunday in the early 70s in South LA one could asily find themselves experiencing the Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra doing what they do for the community, performing incredible music. "Live at Widney High December 26th, 1971" is a previously unreleased PAPA recording. It finds director Horace Tapscott conducting the band at Widney Career Preparatory & Transition Center, a special-education magnet high school in Los Angeles. The band played shows here between 1970 and "72, often sharing the bill with contemporaries John Carter and Bobby Bradford"s group, and at one point the Sun-Ra Arkestra. These weekend shows were free and meant for the surrounding Black community. On this date the PAPA performed a range of compositions from the Ark"s expansive songbook, including arrangements of tunes by Pharoah Sanders and John Coltrane.

Having ended the 90s with the spirited ‘Laughing Mostly’ compilation of singles and demos (Guardian Album Of The Week) Delta finally released their debut studio album of twelve songs in the summer of 2000 on the Dishy Recordings label. Accepting that this might be their sole studio album the band threw everything at these recordings allowing it to exist in its own sphere, unbothered by their contemporary generation and disregarding the idea of even releasing a single.

Recorded at DEP International there was a notable difference to the scruffier, looser charm of their 1990s recordings, a tighter focus developed by having the experienced Lenny Franchi mixing the LP with them. Lenny had been working with a number of Island artists including My Bloody Valentine and Tricky so knew his way around a desk. There was also the question of budget (a few months passed between recording and mixing whilst funds were raised) so every day counted. Ultimately though you can hear the joy in the recordings, even amongst the melancholy and angst. As James recently recalled in an interview in Shindig! Magazine: “It was such a big deal for us. It’s one of my fondest memories doing that record. Everyone was happy. If there’s anything that I’d stand by, I think it would be that”

Louis Clark Jr joined the band towards the end of the ‘90s and brought a classically-trained element to the recordings particularly with his string arrangements. For ‘Cuckoo’, ‘I Want You’ and the prophetic ‘We Come Back’ Louis brought in eight players from the Birmingham Conservatoire; the baroque style is partly why the record often receives comparisons to Love’s ‘Forever Changes’.

On release ‘Slippin’ Out’ was a big favourite with writers at the NME, Mojo and The Guardian again and before long the band were signed to Mercury/Universal for their second studio album ‘Hard Light’, a far more expensive and expansive love affair. It was a temporary palatial home where things quietly fell apart again, but that’s another chapter.

“If long-term memory is nothing more than selective editing and only pop’s most weighty visceral works are built to last then it’s quite possible that in 50 years the Britpop era will be best recollected for the two bands it ostracised. Earlier this year we met Shack and thought their story of mercurial brilliance indicated the biggest music biz oversight of the 90s. We were wrong because we hadn’t met Delta yet. This is richer and more engrossing than anything by Shack” 

Mal Devisa is the songwriting, liberation, and poetry project of multifarious artist Deja Carr. Starting in 2014 and breaking through with 2016's Kiid, Mal Devisa's work spans a selfmade spectrum of sound from gravitic, soulful rock to soliloquy to unabashed hip hop. Although known for her unmistakable, smoldering voice and loop-based, bass-forward compositions, Carr's talents also extend to reaches of spoken word and production, paralleled by aspirations to start both a youth foundation and Afrobeat orchestra. Such boundless inspiration is a central facet of Mal Devisa's work, whose sonically and narratively unrestrained passages teem with empathy and liberatory visions for a better world.

Most of the early releases were 45s and then LPs followed. Soon after, the label staff augmented and we started focusing on high quality reissues of rare LPs from the 60s-70s until now.

Whilst every effort has been made to record the subject in as great a degree of isolation as possible, the sound recordings you will hear on this record were made in a real working hospital and not under controlled conditions. Therefore, on occasion, you may hear some unavoidable background noise, conversations and other extraneous sounds.

All recordings were made by Mark Vernon at Forth Valley Royal Hospital, Larbert, Stirling Community Hospital and Falkirk Community Hospital between 2011 and 2013.

Uptempo, groovy, danceable even, with funky synths and a bunch of infectious HEYs: for nine songs good times are all over the place, from first single Q&A With Myself to bangers like Future Fathers Of Utopia and The Hunger. As always with Admiral Freebee, there’s also room for humor and he doesn’t shy away from introspection either. And make no mistake: Tom Van Laere is no lapdog (No One’s Puppy). Closing track Dog That Never Dies is the only intimate song on the album and sounds like a synthesis of all the album’s themes. And rest assured: Admiral Freebee is doing fine, and both him and his music are bursting with joy. So leave your worries behind for a moment and have some raw fun.

With `The devil's door' And Also The Trees, one true original Post-Punk/New Wave band, presents a quiet storm of an album. At times filmic, poetic and intense with an undercurrent of dark psychedelia. It completes a trilogy of works `The Bone Carver', `Mother-of-pearl Moon' and now `The devil's door' created by the current line-up. Here there are signature `And also the trees' poetic lyrics, orchestral guitar and soundtrack influenced songs inspired by newsreel, oil paintings and folklore. But with this work we have the addition of some surprising instruments that skew the album towards a world where John Barry meets Bela Bartok. And also the trees (AATT) formed during the original post-punk era in rural Worcestershire, an environment that has provided a constant inspiration to a group whose music has often explored the dark underbelly as well as the beauty of the British countryside. They are renowned for their captivating live performances, a unique style of mandolin-like electric guitar, evocative lyrics and dark jazz rhythms - not to mention a creative independence fiercely preserved for over four decades. Back then AATT immediately caught the attention of Robert Smith of The Cure, who invited them to tour with his group on several occasions. Smith was also involved with their early recordings alongside his bandmate Lol Tolhurst, who produced their first records. This longterm friendship and mutual respect was further solidified when AATT were invited to perform at the Robert Smith curated 2018 Meltdown festival in London. This July AATT appear as The Cure's special guests at the Nimes festival. Founded by singer Simon Jones and his guitarist brother Justin, AATT have maintained a continuous presence on the post-punk, and alternative rock scenes worldwide, with a solid fanbase e.g. in Germany.

Das vierte Album und Sub Pop-Debüt von Lala Lala, alias Lillie West, ist ein kraftvoller, warmer und mit Ohrwürmern gespickter Indie-Pop-Kracher für Fans von Jay Som, Porches, Dehd, Angel Olsen und Alex G. Lillie West hat ihre Musik immer aus dem Bedürfnis heraus gemacht, ständig in Bewegung zu sein. Als sie aber kürzlich den Wunsch verspürte, sich niederzulassen, hat sie gemerkt, dass Beständigkeit Kreativität fördern kann. Diese Entwicklung ist der Antrieb für einen Großteil ihres neuen Albums "Heaven 2". Viele Jahre lang lebte West in Chicago, wo sie Lala Lala als Teil der Indie-Szene der Stadt etablierte und mehrere Alben auf Hardly Art veröffentlichte. West hat das Album zusammen mit Melina Duterte von Jay Som produziert, die mit ihrer kraftvollen Stimme einen starken Kontrast zu Wests warmem, rundem Gesang bildet. Die Beziehung zwischen den beiden war telepathisch, und das Ergebnis ist ein mutiges und selbstbewusstes Album. Duterte und West spielten fast alle Instrumente des Albums selbst, mit ein paar wichtigen Gästen wie Sen Morimoto am Saxophon im Eröffnungstrack "Car Anymore" und einer Bridge, die Aaron Maine von Porches für den Titeltrack ,Heaven 2" geschrieben hat. "None of this was supposed to happen", singt West. Aber es ist passiert. "Es ist so eine grundlegende spirituelle Sache", sagt West, ,Widerstand ist die Wurzel allen Leidens, und ich dachte, ich könnte den Verlauf meines Lebens bestimmen." Natürlich konnte sie das, wie alle anderen auch, nicht. Wohin man auch geht, man ist immer da.

Mia Zapata was the greatest rock singer of her time. She may have likely been the greatest blues singer in punk rock history, the woman who married the 78 and the '78. Tragedy did not make this true. Mia Zapata made this true, and the ferocious, spring-loaded shrapnel frame that was built around her by Andy Kessler (guitar: metronomic and furious), Matt Dresdner (bass: fluid, punching, beat-addicted and melodic), and Steve Moriarty (drums: martial and explosive) - who, with Mia, combined to form The Gits - made it true. The Gits were formed at Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio in mid-1986, grabbing and swapping pieces of art, thrash, noise, punk rock, classic rock, and all the sorts of magical silly and bookish jingle bells that an old-school liberal arts education handed you; for the next few years they worked on turning it all into something tough, sensitive, both brutal and kind. Andy, Matt, Mia, and Steve moved to Seattle in middish 1989, landing in a house on Capitol Hill where they (and fellow travelers) wood-shedded and rehearsed for the next few years. The Gits put out three EPs in 1990 and '91 before signing with C/Z Records and releasing their first full-length album, Frenching the Bully. Seattle quickly claimed the quartet as their own and embraced the Gits blend of ferocious fangs and soft heart, the slug/slap of the guitars, and the gorgeous, soft underbelly of the poetic emotions. These qualities not only fit in with the doe-eyed/sharp-clawed grunge ethos but earned the Gits the respect of their peers, including Nirvana, who tapped them to open a major local show in 1990. Then other stuff happened, and their frantic, confessional barbed-heart snowball began rolling up hill very, very fast; the Gits "quickly" (hah! After half a decade learning to implode and explode hearts and stomping their boots on manifold beer-softened, Marlboro-weeded wood stages!) inspired rapture, awe, and the levitation that happened when peak emotion meets peak grindage in front of amps spitting out something that sounded like the mad marriage of Bolan swagger and Dischord tension_ all fronted by a genuinely incomparable woman who held her heart in her mouth and shared it, in all its celebration and fear, without hesitation. The Gits were an angry, inflamed slinky fully in tune with and tuned by the Bessie Patti Smith of her time, truly the only singer who could summon Joplin, Poly Styrene, Sam Cooke, Iggy Pop and Ian MacKaye all in the same goddamn song. In 1993, less than four weeks after accepting an offer from Atlantic Records, Mia died. I leave it at that, because this is not about death; it's about an extraordinary life. I do not say, "You should have been there," I say, "We are lucky so many of us were, and I am so glad we have this extraordinary evidence of the power and gifts of Mia and the Gits that you now can hold in your hands." And I note that Frenching the Bully, this extraordinary testament to the soul, shock, fury and feeling of the Gits, has been long out of print on vinyl and CD, and this new edition - remastered by legendary Seattle engineer Jack Endino - joyfully rectifies that. -Tim Sommer

Brooklyn duo The Still Brothers is a musical project of childhood friends Evan Heinze (The Shacks/Big Crown) and Andrew LeCoche (Ula Ruth). Heinze has toured with the likes of Khraungbin, Lee Fields and Cut Chemist, while LeCoche’s old band once opened for Paul Simon and Edie Brickell. A former student of Madlib’s uncle Jon Faddis, LeCoche has scored music for Netflix and Patagonia and sound design for Twitter, Patron, and Marvel. Signing to Lewis Recordings in 2020 the band’s first single ‘The Deep’ was instantly picked up by Steve Lamacq on BBC 6 Music who regularly plays it to this day. ‘Wake Up’ featuring the vocals of Marina B. spent six weeks on the BBC 6 Music playlist gaining support from Lauren Laverne, Gilles Peterson, Mary Anne Hobbs, Craig Charles, Huey Morgan, Cerys Matthews, Don Letts, Tom Ravenscroft and Guy Garvey. Lockdown didn’t slow down the band’s creativity with many tracks on their self-titled debut EP recorded remotely. Two such tracks were the collaborations with London based singer/songwriter Shauna Kelly aka Shoshy. ‘It’s Not Over’ and ‘Crazy’ were released on 7” and both received BBC radio support. Marina B stepped back on the mic with the upbeat hit ‘I Wanna Be With You’, a dancefloor filler mixed by St. Frances Hotel (producer for Michael Kiwanuka). The b-side ‘Sungalz’ is a hazy dream pop number that started life as an instrumental jam

This double LP of instrumental Hindustani, Carnatic and folk 78rpm shellac records from India comes with a full color 12-page insert of gramophone record ephemera, shops, labels, manufacturing details and graphics. The LPs feature over 25 artists recorded between 1904 and 1959 playing a panoply of instruments: jalatarang, dilruba, sarod, clarionet, pakhawaj, violin, been, kazoo, shehnai, tabla, sarangi, sitar, vina and more.
Artists include Imdad Khan (the first sitarist ever recorded), Ahmedjan Thirkhawa, Bundu Khan, Amir Hussain, Allauddin Khan (who taught Ravi Shankar), and others both forgotten and revered.
The Indian classical instrumental tradition is one of incredible proficiency and expressiveness using instruments and techniques created over generations that seem to perfectly and uniquely compliment Indian culture, landscape and tradition. Sympathetic strings resonate inside sitars and sarangis to manifest shimmering reverberant spiritual spaces; horns, reeds and flutes extend the range, volume and melodic inventiveness of the voice; a mind-boggling array of elaborately turned percussion instruments allow for rhythms as complex or as simple as the flowing Ganges river. Classical music in India was perhaps at its height during the 78rpm period as the Raj era was ending and the world was globalizing.

The most popular acoustic folk music group of the 1960s, Peter, Paul and Mary mixed great songs with political and social activism. They brought folk music to a new prominence in the post-McCarthy era, putting lyrics about politics and morality on the radio amid the syrupy boy-girl love tunes that dominated the airwaves. Presented here is the trio's debut album, originally issued in 1962, the splendid selftitled Peter, Paul and Mary. It features some of their most popular compositions such as 'Early in the Morning' and 'Cruel War', and great renditions of Hedy West's '500 Miles' and Pete Seeger's 'If I Had a Hammer'.

The bonus tracks were recorded live in San Francisco and Long Beach, California, late 1962: 'One Kind Favor', 'The Times They Are A' Changin', and 'If I Had My Way'. "The debut album by Peter, Paul & Mary is still one of the best albums to come out of the 1960s folk music revival. It's a beautifully harmonized collection of the best songs that the group knew, stirring in its sensibilities and its haunting melodies as it crosses between folk, children's songs, and even gospel. James Davison, the most startlingly talented UK brass player of his generation, joins this highly experienced team with brilliant results. Charlie Parker's 'Ornithology',Thelonious Monk's 'Straight No Chaser', Billy Strayhorn's 'Satin Doll' and Horace Silver's 'Peace are amongst the gems to be found here. This is the second Woodville Records release to be based solely around the brilliant arranging skills of world class trombonist Mark Nightingale. The first, Alan Barnes plus 11 (WVCD151) featured Mark's adept and characterful handling of a twelve- piece ensemble. Jazz Classics ...with a Twist displays equal inventiveness and imagination, showcasing a sextet line-up in a programme of individually re-thought takes on these ageless tunes. In Mark's hands this band frequently resembles a much larger ensemble such is his skill in manipulating tone colour and voicing.

After being fired by Miles Davis and traveling to Philadelphia to combat his drug addiction in 1957, John Coltrane accepted an invitation from Thelonious Monk to join his quartet. They famously played at New York's Five Spot Cafe and despite the exquisite quality of the band's music, it yielded few recordings and Coltrane's tenure with Monk only lasted six months. Produced by Orrin Keepnews for his label Milestones, the album is compiled from sessions recorded during April, June, and July of 1957. It wasn't released until 1961 though, four years after the sessions took place, and after Coltrane had become a leader and jazz star in his own right.

Portrait in Jazz was Bill Evans' third album as a leader, following New Jazz
Conceptions (1956) and Everybody Digs Bill Evans (1958). It was also Evans' first
studio album with his legendary trio, featuring Scott LaFaro and Paul Motian.
The repertoire here consists of standards (all of them treated in Evans' very
personal style) plus two originals, "Peri's Scope" – premiered on Portrait in Jazz,
and "Blue in Green," which was co-composed by Miles Davis. Bill first recorded the
latter composition in March 1959 with Miles for the classic album, Kind of Blue.

The next chapter in this series, 'Second Thoughts (Expanded Edition)', marks 50 years since Split Enz ventured to London to record with Roxy Music's Phil Manzanera in the producer's chair. This definitive 2LP set pairs the original 1976 mix, remastered from the original tapes, with a companion LP 'Wide Angle Enz' - a treasure trove of live recordings and alternate mixes, including a previously unreleased archival rough mix of '129 (Matinee Idyll)' which is exclusive to this release. Presented in the distinctive Australia/New Zealand sleeve featuring John Prew's band portrait, the album concludes with the hypnotic locked- groove of 'Mental Notes', mirroring the international version's striking finale. Pressed on two 140g vinyl, housed in a wide- spine sleeve with printed inner bags. Remastered from the original tapes by Phil Kinrade and overseen by Eddie Rayner, with lacquers cut by Harry Rudkins at AIR Studios.

"British shoegazing/alternative rock band Chapterhouse released two albums during their existence, Whirlpool (1991) and Blood Music (1993). Their debut album is a fantastic example of shoegaze at its best. The wall of sound approach is built around dance music structures and they're creating some heavy grooves. Whirlpool spent three weeks in the UK Album chart, peaking at number 2 The Nineties classic album Whirlpool is available as a limited edition of 1000 individually numbered copies on white marbled vinyl and includes an insert. "

Whirlpool by Chapterhouse, released 29 March 2024, includes the following tracks: "Autosleeper ", "Falling down", "Guilt", "Something more" and more.

"Tonight At Noon" compiles tracks from two earlier recordings sessions: one session from 1957 with Jimmy Knepper on the trombone, the drummer Dannie Richmond, Saxophone player Shafi Hadi and the pianist Wade Legge, which were released on the album "The Clown" (Atlantic 1260). The second session took place in 1961 with Booker Ervin and Roland Kirk on the saxophone, Knepper, the bassist Doug Watkins, Mingus at the piano and Richmond on the drums, and was released on "Oh Yeah" (Atlantic SD 1377).

The two sets differ in mood, but this does not mean that it is an album that uses leftovers. While Mingus in the first session strives for European harmonics and melodic approaches with a hard bop tempo (particularly on the title track) in the direction of the blues, the second session with its vespertine elegance and spatial explorations comes over rather as a sort of exercise à la avantgard Ellington with sophisticated harmonies that pave the way for sluggish marches and gospel-like blues. Kirk and Ervin complement one another particularly well, their swing is appararently boundless. Mingus’s piano playing is deeply rooted in the blues, and his sense of tempo and lightness anhances these numbers, particularly in "‘Old’ Blues for Walt’s Torin".

In these compositions one already finds hints of Mingus’s later recordings. The most beautiful number is taken from the 1957 session and concludes the album: "Passions Of A Woman Loved", almost ten minutes in length, feels like an Ellington suite. Although, or maybe simply because several years passed between the two sessions, one cannot deny this album’s magic.

So viele Einzelbilder braucht es um eine Picture Platte zum leben und zum Sterben zu erwecken. Auf dem Vinyl wird der Lebenszyklus einer Ameise von der Geburt bis zum Tod nachgezeichnet. Um die Ameise zum leben (bzw. sterben) zu erwecken benötigt ihr: die Knochenfabrik LP Ameisenstaat Zoetrope Vinyl Edition, eine Stroboskop-App fürs Handy die 1800 RPM bzw 30 HZ kann, wahlweise ein Handy dessen Videofunktion 30 Frames/Sekunde kann. Platte auflegen, Geschwindigkeit auf 33 RPM und bei sehr hellem Licht (idealerweise direktes Sonnenlicht) mit der Handkamera filmen. Die Framerate muss 30 fps (=Frames per Second) betragen, das ist üblicherweise voreingestellt. Je heller die Beleuchtung desto schöner der Effekt. Eine weitere Möglichkeit ist das Beleuchten der Platte mit einem Stroboskop. Es gibt zahlreiche Stroboskop Apps fürs Handy, der Blitz muss individuell einstellbar sein. Eine Strobo-App die ausschliesslich im Takt der Musik blitzt ist hierfür ungeeignet. Die Blitzrate muss hierbei auf 30 Hz bzw. 1800 RPM eingestellt werden. Hier gilt je dunkler die Umgebung desto schöner der Effekt.

Seit über einem Jahrzehnt ist THE NEAL MORSE BAND eines der beständigsten und einheitlichsten Kollektive des Progressive Rock. Mit "L.I.F.T.", ihrem neuesten Studioalbum und dem ersten seit "Innocence & Danger" aus dem Jahr 2021, kehren Neal Morse, Mike Portnoy, Eric Gillette, Bill Hubauer und Randy George mit einem Werk zurück, das sowohl Reflexion als auch Inspiration verkörpert. "L.I.F.T." wurde unter Zeitdruck während einer Phase großer Veränderungen geschrieben und aufgenommen und fängt die kreative Chemie der Band in ihrer instinktivsten und inspiriertesten Form ein.

Auch wenn die NWOBHM zum Zeitpunkt der Veröffentlichung von Elixirs »The Son Of Odin«, im Juli 1986, bereits Geschichte war, zählt das Album zu den besten Alben der Bewegung. Mit einer neuen Fassung ihrer hoch gelobten Single ‘Treachery (Ride Like The Wind)’, viele Jahre nach der ursprünglichen 7“, wurde »The Son Of Odin« vom englischen Terrorizer-Magazin als eines der Top 20 Power-Metal-Alben gekürt, während es das Sweden Rock im April 2010 als „Album-Klassiker des Monats“ auswählte. Elixir starteten 1983 in London. Die fünf Musiker nannten seinerzeit das erste Album von MSG sowie »British Steel« von Judas Priest sowie neuere Bands wie Mercyful Fate und Queensryche als ihre Haupteinflüsse. 1985 erschien die Debüt-Single ‘Treachery (Ride Like The Wind)’, die im Kerrang! von keinem Geringeren als Ronnie James Dio in einem Gastbeitrag abgesegnet wurde, was die Band anspornte, ihr erstes Album in Angriff zu nehmen. Das Resultat war »The Son Of Odin«, aufgenommen im Januar 1986 im The Lodge Studio von The Enid und sechs Monate später abgemischt. Nahezu überall folgten überschwängliche Kritiken, nicht zuletzt im Metal Forces, wo Dave Constable zu Protokoll gab: „Eine selbstfinanzierte LP, die so manche Veröffentlichung eines Major-Labels in den Schatten stellt.“ Constable resümierte: „Ich höre mir lieber »The Son Of Odin« an, als die hundertste Version von »Turbo« oder »Somewhere In Time«.“ Die 40th Anniversary Edition dieses unsterblichen NWOBHM-Klassikers beinhalt zusätzlich zum regulären Album die vollständige Session, von der die ‘Treachery (Ride Like The Wind)’-Single stammt, genauso wie das vorangegangene Demo und die BBC Friday Rock Show Session. Zudem erzählen aktuelle Interviews mit Gitarrist Phil Denton und Manager Seymour Mincer erzählen die Geschichte des Albums.
