1982 4-Piece Demo' is the first official, fully-licensed and unreleased material to be released under the name Strawberry Switchblade in 30 years. Since disbanding amid major record label acrimony and personal differences in 1986, the already-cult band have since grown in stature and legend. Trailblazers in many ways, the band's mythology justifiably centers around the charismatic duo of Jill Bryson and Rose McDowall, but that isn't a complete picture. Bryson and McDowall's growing friendship, having met some years earlier on the punk scene, became a creative partnership: Bryson's art school background and McDowall's history in avant-punk group The Poets meant Strawberry Switchblade was a band pitted against many established norms. The band's very first incarnation, an all-female 4 piece, recorded one demo at Glasgow's Hellfire Club and played a handful of gigs. Friends Janice Goodlett and Carole McGowan completed the line up on bass and drums respectively. Strawberry Switchblade would eventually pair down to a duo and go on to chart success but it's in these raw, passionate recordings that the songwriting and vocal elements were being hammered out and explored in real time.


Spanish Song' is a previously unreleased song. With Rose McDowall's instantly recognizable lead vocal dovetailing with Bryson's harmonies and lead guitar, it's the first glimpse at an alternative history of Strawberry Switchblade. This incarnation could easily have been featured on a Nuggets compilation or a precursor to the indie-pop revolution that would take over British bedrooms a couple of years later. "Trees & Flowers" is instantly recognizable, a bona fide classic that would earn the band its first record deal. Here it's given a more forceful rhythm section: Goodlett and McGowan's playing is in fact accomplished and doesn't hint at the bands' youth. "Go Away" would also surface later on the band's debut LP but here it is a moody-garage stomper with a psychedelic, haunting refrain. These 3 songs point to a tantalizing future of the band that was never realized.

Reasons To Stay is Tanika Charles' fourth full-length album, and her most introspective to date. Where her songs have typically touched on romantic love and heartache, the core love and loss of this record is family focused. It has taken years for Tanika to be able to publicly reflect on the childhood trauma and family breakup that occurred during her teens. Pelican has always been a band that's not just from Chicago, but distinctly of Chicago. Formed in 2000 by guitarists Trevor Shelley de Brauw and Laurent Schroeder-Lebec alongside brothers Bryan and Larry Herweg on bass and drums respectively, Pelican's foundation was built upon the rule-free, genre-agnostic scene synonymous with the Fireside Bowl. "The `90s in Chicago was a free-for-all. Everyone was just coming from a place of pure creativity," says Shelley de Brauw. With Schroeder-Lebec returning to the band following Dallas Thomas' exit in 2022, this reunified version of Pelican allowed the band to tap back into those influences and build something distinctly new with Flickering Resonance. While longtime Pelican fans will find an updated version of the band's ethos_one that's been constantly evolving since their very first EP_their new partnership with Run For Cover Records emphasizes something that's always been implicit to the Pelican formula. These songs take as much inspiration from titanic `90s post-hardcore, space-rock, and emo as they do traditional metal, showing that though Godflesh and Goatsnake records occupied the shelves of Pelican's songwriters, so too did Quicksand, Christie Front Drive, and Hum. Capturing the raw essence of the band, whose fearless exploration blurs the lines between structure, chaos, melody and noise. Bardo Pond's music traverses space rock, acid rock, post-rock, shoegaze, noise, Krautrock and psychedelia.

‘Volume 4’ hails from self-released sessions recorded in January 2002, its five tracks include the supremely tripped out heaviness of ‘K2’ and the balance-shifting ‘New Drunks (Revisited)’ with Isobel Sollenberger’s exquisite and, frankly, quite disturbing vocal. They’re shorter interrogations of sound by Bardo terms, almost succinct in their mesmerising riffage and off-kilter arrangements.

By contrast, ‘Volume 5’ consists of two lengthy mantras recorded between 2000 and 2004 and released as the tape spool spiralled out. ‘FUFO’ sounds like Cluster unravelling with Merzbow mixing, a post-industrial slew of hypnotic proportions, while ‘Monarch’ begins as a Current 93-like neo-folk mood piece before evolving into a wailing slice of drone-drenched Americana by way of a Velvets’ jam.

“We were pushing improvisations as far as we could. It was glorious having the studio. The more that our heads were spinning after a session, the better we knew that session would sound when we listened back. We were getting together two nights a week, usually three or four hours working on material and songs and the other half the time letting loose. Volumes 4 and 5 gather together some of these improvisations, and one early song that we felt like doing.” Adds Michael Gibbons of Bardo Pond.

2005's Naturally was a pivotal moment in the history of soul music. It was the first Daptone album tracked at the renowned "House of Soul", a recording studio handbuilt by Sharon and the rest of the Daptone family in a two story rental in Bushwick, Brooklyn. The album has gone on to sell over 200,000 records, with hit singles "How Long Do I Have To Wait?" and "This Land is Your Land" streaming in the hundreds of millions- staggering figures for a wholly independent release.

Up to this point Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings had yet to reach an audience outside of dingy, hole-in-the-wall clubs, dive bars, and underground DJ parties, attended by only the most in-the-know. This was the scene where the band began to flourish, developing the sound that would forever alter the musical landscape and set a lofty new bar for what could be considered real-deal soul music. It made Daptone a household name and opened doors for countless musicians and record labels to come. Die 1981 erschienene LP „Here We Are“ von SPHINX, eine Mischung aus Progressive Rock und Heavy Metal, war ihrer Zeit weit voraus. Die Band aus dem Raum Stuttgart, gegründet von italienischen Gastarbeitersöhnen, kombinierte härtere Gitarren mit verspielten Keyboards und Rhythmuswechseln. Der Gitarrist Thomas Metzger, später als Tommy Newton bekannt, prägte den Sound der Band. Die LP wurde 1985 unter dem Namen „Burning Lights“ erneut veröffentlicht, konnte aber damals nicht die breite Anerkennung finden, die sie verdient hätte. Heute gilt das Album als Kult, insbesondere unter Metal-Fans.

Aus der griechischen Black-Metal-Bastion Athen kommen Eleventh Ray mit Klageliedern, die schon seit fast einem Jahrzehnt auf sich warten lassen. Die okkulten Darbietungen in der unheiligen Hülle von Reviving Tehom beschwören den Geist von Celtic Frost, Sodom, den 90er-Jahre-Taten des großen Magus Wampyr Daoloth (Necromantia, Rotting Christ, Thou Art Lord) und natürlich Therions 1993er Symphony Masses: Ho Drakon Ho Megas Album.
Die Saat für Eleventh Ray wurde von Material gesät, das einst für die Black-Metal-Kraft von Serpent Noir geschaffen wurde, deren wechselnde Tonalität Gitarrist Y.K. dazu veranlasste, das besagte Material für einen späteren Zweck zu vergraben. Eine Entscheidung, die erst 2022 durch ein verheerendes Probedemo Früchte trug, das das Interesse von Dark Descent Records weckte.

Ein großartiges Album des baskischen Musikpioniers Fermin Muguruza, ehemals Mitglied der großartigen Bands Negu Gorriak und Kortatu, das ursprünglich im Jahr 2001 erschien.Fermin Muguruza hat auf diesem Album einen Schritt in Richtung der Musik seines guten Freundes Manu Chao gemacht, und das zahlt sich aus mit einem Stil, der den Geschmack von Manus Musik teilt, aber dennoch eigenständig bleibt und Groove, Spannung und vor allem Intelligenz bietet. Reggae/Ragga/Dub und mehr, mit einem fast Ska-artigen Touch. Die Texte sind alle in der historischen baskischen Sprache Euskera, der ältesten in Europa, mit hilfreichen Übersetzungen in Französisch, Englisch und Spanisch. Die Feuilletonisten Tageszeitungen schwadronierten ausgesprochen gern vom "Soundtrack der Globalisierungsgegner", als Manu Chao mit seinem zweiten Solo-Album tourte. Eine bedauerliche Verkürzung der Tatsachen, wie nicht nur Manu Chao selbst immer wieder betonte, der den revolutionären Drive schon Mitte der 90er-Jahre für seine Band Mano Negra und sich erkannte, dass auch der dringlichste Aufruf zur Revolte seine Kraft verliert, wenn man ihn zu oft wiederholt. Eine ganz andere Schule vertritt da der Überzeugungs-Baske und tatsächliche Globalisierungsgegner Fermin Muguruza: Er wird nicht müde, gegen die imperiale Politik der weltweiten Konzerngiganten zu wettern, das Fernsehen als Instrument der Desinformation zu geißeln und an die gewalttätig-militaristischen Seiten der amerikanischen Außenpolitik zu erinnern. Dort wo Manu Chao seine Songs als Klangpostkarten von seinen musikalischen Weltumrundungen verschickt, schreibt Fermin Muguruza herbe Kampfprosa in politischen Pamphleten.

On his second solo album, "Gamle Mester" (Old Master), Lars Fredrik Froislie pays homage to the greats of the past. Drawing inspiration not only from the pioneers of progressive rock but also from art, literature, and mythology, the album reflects on timeless acts of creativity that still resonate today. The title is derived from the ancient oak tree "Den Gamle Mester," found at Krodsherad Prestegård, which also inspired a poem of the same name by Jorgen Moe. This symbolic tree serves as a unifying theme throughout the album, representing wisdom, endurance, and the passage of time. From the opening track "Demring" (Dawn) to the closing "Skumring" (Dusk), the album embarks on a dynamic journey filled with masterful instrumentation and some of Froislie's most compelling songwriting to date. The album reaches its crescendo with "De tre gratier" (The Three Graces), named after the daughters of Zeus. Spanning 12 minutes, this opus encapsulates everything that makes "Gamle Mester" a triumph. Shifting between light and dark, the track is a treasure trove of rich keyboard textures, soaring flute melodies, dynamic percussion, and the virtuosic bass work of Nikolai Hængsle.
