Obwohl "Suffer" lediglich eine Laufzeit von 26 Minuten hat, war die Platte für Fat Mike, den Sänger und Bassisten von NoFX, in Bezug auf das amerikanische Punk-Revival der Neunziger "das Album, das alles veränderte". Tatsächlich bedeutete der dritte Langspieler der Band 1988 nicht nur den internationalen Szenedurchbruch für Bad Religion, er schuf auch die Grundlage für den massiven Erfolg des Epitaph-Labels, das mit The Offspring, NoFX, Rancid und Pennywise just jene Gruppen unter Vertrag nahm, die in den Neunzigern mit Melodic Hardcore, Pop-Punk und Skatepunk für Furore sorgten. "Suffer" bot für die damalige Zeit etwas völlig Neues: Schnelle, aber sehr melodische Songs mit mehrstimmigen Gesängen und Hintergrundchören sowie abrupte Rhythmuswechsel; hinzu kamen der klare Gesang Greg Graffins, der durch eine exakte Aussprache und Metrik gekennzeichnet ist, sowie intellektuell inspirierte Lyrics. Bad Religion spielten die 15 Songs von "Suffer" in der Originalbesetzung - Greg Graffin (Gesang), Brett Gurewitz (Gitarre), Greg Hetson (Gitarre), Jay Bentley (Bass), Pete Finestone (Schlagzeug) - im April 1988 im Westbeach Recorders-Studio in Hollywood ein. Das Album wurde von Brett Gurewitz und Donnell Cameron in acht Tagen aufgenommen und gemixt.

The artform called Jazz was a unique reflection of “The African American experience here in the United States.Unfortunately by the 90″s it had been compromised by major record companies and made “smoother” for mainstream consumption and more profits.
Born in America’s rural black south Rock & Roll had suffered the same fate years earlier. Original artists eventually replaced by well studied clones and corporate mega profits!! Also happening the original artform of jazz appeared to be caught, processed & throughly EXPLAINED by people who sought to intellectualize “struggle & human emotion” into mere words and then benefit immensely financially by being authorities on the subject.

There are artists we occasionally happen across, even 14 years into our FatKidOnFire journey, where we know we need to work with them. There is material from said artists which sets our world on fire, and then there’s the four tunes that make up our first physical record in over two years. This one’s a long time coming, and also marks one of the first instances in FKOF Records where we welcome an artist to the family with a straight-to-record release. Over the last decade and a half, the 140 landscape has been through its peaks and troughs. Tastes and styles change, but the one constant is when we find the right beats, bass and space we know we’re onto a winner. The international TRAKA collective caught our eyes and ears early on in their project – for all the right reasons. Hailing from the northern city of Oulu and featuring members of esteemed Finnish outfits such as Haapoja, Dart, and Renate/Cordate, TRYPANON have steadily emerged as one of the most compelling and unorthodox underground acts in recent memory. Their 2021 debut "Amentia" earned widespread acclaim for its suffocating intensity and bleak atmospheres, establishing the band as a vital force in the realms of extreme music. With "Through the Portal of Flesh to Achieve Divinity", TRYPANON push their vision even further into the void. The album is a nightmarish fusion of down-tuned sludge, chaotic death metal, and dissonant black metal, woven together with progressive flourishes and hypnotic melodic fragments. The result is a deeply immersive and punishing listening experience that recalls the extremity of bands like Lord Mantis, Coffinworm and Cobalt, while retaining a sonic and conceptual identity entirely its own. Last Retch is a death metal band hailing from Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Your favourite parts of OSDM - The earworms of Carcass, the driving melodic force of Bolt Thrower, and the sheer brutality of Cannibal Corpse - blended with ease and delivered with memorable ferocity. The band made their initial mark in early 2021 with a well-received demo that showcased their raw and unfiltered sound. In September 2022, Last Retch released their debut full-length album, Sadism and Severed Heads. The album comprises nine tracks, including titles like "Neurosis," "Doomrider," and the title track "Sadism and Severed Heads." The cover art was crafted by the renowned painter Paolo Girardi, adding a visual intensity that complements the band's sound. Continuing their momentum, Last Retch released the Ergotism EP on April 26, 2024. This EP features tracks such as "Scalped En Masse," "Heaving Pieces," "Doomrider II," and the title track "Ergotism." The release solidified their status as a rising force in the death metal scene. In Steel City, Abject Cruelty is unavoidable. Decaying from all angles, Hamilton represents the suffering, plight, fears, and harsh reality of our most vulnerable. Our shared indignation inspired 8 tracks of pure old-school death.

Erik K Skodvin's feature-length score to Thomas Roth's thriller "Schächten" feels like the epitome of all his musical projects, conjuring a dark cinematic trip through 1960's post-WWII Vienna in a film that touches on topics such as law, justice & revenge.

Releasing a soundtrack as a stand-alone album can be challenging; and "Schächten" is by no means a typical listening experience. The record contains 24 more or less short pieces evolving through dramatic movements, underlaying menace and deep emotive scenes. One thing that stands out is the linear atmosphere throughout the story which creates a wholeness that keeps your attention to the very end. Set in wintery Austrian landscapes in dimly saturated colours, the film's dramatic events with dark political undertones feels like a perfect situation for Skodvin's atmospheric collages - perhaps sounding closer than ever to his early works as Svarte Greiner or Deaf Center. Cello, violin, piano, analogue synth and plenty of hardly recognizable instrumentation come together in a record that feels very organic in its subdued tones. The score also features percussion by Andrea Belfi as well as a Chopin piano interpretation by Kelly Wyse to the bizarrely schizophrenic piece "Judenfreund".

With the contemporary world sliding into darkness again, listening to the soundtrack feels like coming to terms with ones own anxieties - something that in the end comes through as a cleansing experience. As quoted in the film "Everyone is their own devil. And we make this world our hell".

Short synopsis : "Vienna 1960s - The young Jewish business man Victor has to witness how the prosecution of a Nazi crime against his family fails. The political and legal system is still virtually run by former Nazis with large parts of society being entangled in the past. When Victor also loses his grief ridden father and his girlfriend’s family opposes their relationship and his identity, Victor begins to loose faith in formal justice and takes matters in his own hands."

For our fourth release, we welcome Basel-based producer Ben Kaczor. ‘To Baby Bones’ showcases the tracks produced as part of Ben’s first live set presented at Above Below Festival in 2024.

Written as a homage to a loved one, the title track of the EP is a gentle soundscape traveling through memories and subtle body shivers, far away yet never out of heart’s reach. ‘Bridge’, as if hung high above, suffuses the air with a thick emotional haze, lifting slowly as a walk along a fragile structure ends. Wistfully transforming present into past, ‘This Blue Light’ melds with the orange glow of the sun and dissolves into a white cloud. Driving and fizzy ‘Punchbag’ brings all the dreamers down to earth. Immersing them straight into the buzzing front left, it buoyantly concludes an ode to the melody of life and the joy of a loving heart — To Baby Bones.

Five years on from their iconic debut album, the Red Robin posse return with another epic full length LP - this time featuring the ruffneck deejay styling of their longtime friend Tippa Lee.

With ten hardcore riddims from Naram stretching the full spectrum of 80s roots, rub-a-dub, and digi - and uncompromising street level lyrics from the LA-based Jamaican veteran Tippa Lee - Musically Bad is an absolute must-have for any discerning reggae collector.

The culmination of nearly a decade of collaboration, with multiple trips to LA where they improvised studio set ups at a range of cheap motels. Tippa takes listeners on a journey through his history in reggae, lamenting the rise of slackness and gun culture, firing shots at politicians and oligarchs, and shining a spotlight on the struggles of people of all colours and creeds suffering in the ghetto.

Despite the serious messages conveyed, and the heavyweight militant riddims, the album contains plenty of moments of humour and levity thanks to Tippa's lyrical nous.

With all riddims recorded and mixed to half inch tape in Naram's analogue Whanganui studio, and crisp mastering from Downbeat Studios, the LP is fine tuned to mash up any dancehall or living room.

Seit über einem Jahrzehnt nutzt der Sänger, Songwriter und Produzent Adam Andrzejewski diesen Künstlernamen als kreativen Sammelbegriff, unter dem er ein umfangreiches Werk geschaffen hat, das ebenso beständig fesselnd wie ständig im Wandel begriffen ist. Diese geschickte Fähigkeit, Sounds und Stile zu vermischen, ist zu seinem Markenzeichen geworden, aber unabhängig von den Genre-Kennzeichen - von Rap-Beats über New-Wave-Synthesizer bis hin zu Goth-Atmosphären - ist das schlagende Herz von WPSE Andrzejewskis einzigartige Stimme und seine esoterische und doch emotionale Lyrik. Diese Schlüsselelemente haben das Projekt durch musikalische Erkundungen geprägt, und auf seinem neuesten Album Mossy Oak Shadow" stellt Andrzejewski sie nun auf die Probe. Wie bei allem, was Wicca Phase Springs Eternal macht, zeigt sich Andrzejewski auch auf Mossy Oak Shadow" voll und ganz engagiert. Mossy Oak Shadow" mag für Fans von Wicca Phase Springs Eternal, die durch seine beatlastigen modernen Klassiker wie Secret Boy" (2016) oder Suffer On" (2018) auf ihn aufmerksam geworden sind, wie eine drastische Kehrtwende erscheinen - aber das sollte keine völlige Überraschung sein. WPSE-Veröffentlichungen haben sich schon immer mit reduzierten Akustiksongs beschäftigt, und noch weiter zurück gibt es Andrzejewskis frühere Arbeit als Mitglied der Emo/Indie-Größen Tigers Jaw. Als er diese Band 2013 verließ, um sich auf Wicca Phase Springs Eternal zu konzentrieren, stieß er auf Skepsis bei den Zuhörern, die zögerten, seine neue Persönlichkeit und seinen experimentellen Trap-Sound anzunehmen. Ironischerweise hat Andrzejewski jetzt Wicca Phase Springs Eternal so gründlich etabliert, dass er seine Fans erneut mit einem krassen Klangwandel herausfordert - diesmal jedoch durch die Rückkehr zu dem gitarrenorientierten Songwriting, das er beiseite gelegt hatte. Dylan, Will Oldman, Richard Thompson - was ich an diesen Songwritern am meisten mag, ist, dass ich ihnen vertrauen kann", erklärt Andrzejewski . Wenn sie etwas völlig Seltsames machen, vertraue ich darauf, dass sie wissen, was sie tun, weil es von derselben Person kommt, die all diese anderen Songs geschrieben hat, die ich liebe. Auch wenn es vielleicht etwas Zeit braucht, bis ich dort bin, wo sie sind, möchte ich es versuchen."

Here we are with the Earth perched on a thin tenuous wire. The neo-liberal order and its fascist mirror world burning through fossil fuels and the souls of vulnerable peoples the globe over. Conflict, warfare, climate degradation, misinformation. The time is nigh to break the spell with music.

Right on time comes IC007 – Four cuts of progressive elektro roots to shine a light on only four of the multitudinous hot spots of suffering while also inspiring a musical movement forward through the storm. Dedicated to the peoples of the Sudan, Palestine, Ukraine, and Taiwan this tune is another ITAL COUNSELOR sound system scorcher.

The message at its very core is to keep keeping on. Never give up. Forward through the storm like an ITAL WARRIOR! This RHYTHM SHOWER is a guideline toward a better tomorrow.

Delivering this message are some of ITAL COUNSELOR MUSIC’s stalwart players. Inyaki Basque Dub Foundation returns to the fold with yet another top-notch original rhythm – A drum and bass workout that harkens back to the best of Sly & Robbie’s Compass Point era science fiction dubwise and just a little bit of Aswad’s “To The Top” era progressive roots. Both raw and rhythmically complex, Inyaki makes the drum and bass hit hard with the mixing help of top studio man James Zugati. The dubwise cuts on side two are of course custom made to make bass bins rumble and weakheart drop.

Alas, we cannot forget Soothsayer horns – here as always proving that they are the best horn section out there. They feel it. They know it. They execute it in the hardest and sharpest of manors. Heavy heavy hornsman manners…

If you're a serious music fan but not a native Kiwi, your first awareness of New Zealand's fab music scene may have come from the debut of The Chills' mesmerising Kaleidoscope World collection of early singles. Within a few years, a great number of NZ acts saw music released by various UK and US labels . . . generally to great praise and enthusiasm. That this occurred without any of these acts having to move abroad to further their chances was nearly as delightful a feat as the music itself. The exception to this was Dead Famous People, radical in a snap decision after a five-song 12" for Flying Nun, Lost Persons Area, to change hemispheres and make a go for it in London. It started well. Three London recordings were added to three from their Flying Nun EP and put out by Billy Bragg's Utility label - about as perfect a mini-album as there's ever been. Response was positive, more songs recorded, the group did a John Peel session and played out often, but the vaguely impoverished group began to fall apart. Singer and primary writer Dons Savage - determined to make it - had a near-miss at becoming Saint Etienne's singer on an early take of their 'Kiss And Make Up' cover, and there was a fine performance from her on The Chills' 'Heavenly Pop Hit' . . . but dismay had set in. Upon learning of her mum's passing back home, Dons returned to NZ and was quiet for decades. Most of their London recordings were later released later in minuscule quantities by very small labels, but these saw scant press or attention and enjoyed next-to-no sales. Their moment had passed, and the band has suffered the strange fate of being the least-known of the truly brilliant acts associated with Flying Nun. Listening to these `lost' songs, it seems unfathomable that they could have fallen by the wayside. No NZ songwriter comes as close to equalling Martin Phillipps' pop brilliance as Dons. Her superbly sweet vocals, delicious harmonies and sophisticated arrangements aside, the songs dealt perceptively with universal follies of youth and yearning in tandem with a then-unusual twist of lyrics dealing matter-of-factly with her sexuality at a time when `women's music' was seen as exclusionary (segregated into its own bin in shops, if it existed there at all), and the riot grrrl movement was years away, later breaking through due to its radical stance. Dons is a pioneer in myriad ways, the irony of her transcendent brilliance failing to propel a greater career may rest in the fact that she leapt to the head of the class too quickly for people to grasp it; a fate that's befallen so many musical geniuses acknowledged today but less in their time - something rather tragically acknowledged in old pal Martin Phillipps' song with The Chills, 'A Song For Randy Newman, Etc.' None of these thirteen songs fails to deliver something both immediate and unique. And we're proud to debut 'Vampirella"', a magical fantasy song of longing and intrigue - surely one of the most perfect tunes to ever sit around unreleased for decades! Dons is again busy conjuring new songs; in the meantime we're delighted to unveil these obscure gems from the past.
