Das war eine Frage, die sich Khruangbin selbst stellten, als sie sich dem zehnjährigen Jubiläum ihres Debütalbums näherten - dem einstigen Kultklassiker, der heute als genreprägend gilt: The Universe Smiles Upon You". Wenn wir zurückgehen und uns selbst sagen könnten, wie viel nach diesem Album auf uns zukommen würde, was würden wir feiern wollen?" fragte Laura Lee, Bassistin, Sängerin und Gründungsmitglied der Band. Stattdessen dachten sie: Lasst es uns noch einmal machen." The Universe Smiles Upon You ii" wurde vom 4. bis 6. Januar 2025 in derselben Familien-Scheune des Gitarristen Mark Speer aufgenommen, an denselben Tagen, an denen TUSUY vor zehn Jahren erstmals entstand. Obwohl die Bedingungen dieselben waren - Schmutzboden, brutal kalt, minimale Schalldämmung, alle Aufnahmen live - sind die Songs es nicht. Sie wurden neu angegangen, einige stärker verändert als andere, mit der eingefangenen Blitz-in-der-Flasche"-Energie des ursprünglichen Albums, während gleichzeitig entdeckt wurde, was diesmal einzigartig sein würde, in dieser Phase des Bandlebens. Das Ergebnis bewegt sich wie Wellen auf dem Wasser über zehn hypnotisierende Tracks, die Scheune erzeugt ein Gefühl von Weite, Gelassenheit und kreativer Freiheit, die nahegelegene Tierwelt ist hörbar (achtet auf die Vögel bei August Twelve ii"), ebenso das Knarren und Klappern der Scheune. Es ist ein Geflecht aus kleinen Bewegungen in nuancierten Arrangements, das langsam das neue Leben, die Geschichten und den Charakter von jemandem enthüllt, den man nach zehn Jahren wieder wie zum ersten Mal trifft.

Synaptic Cliffs is barely able to contain the excitement for the release of the 4-track EP "Maximalism" where pdqb collaborates with DJ Sotofett in the most effective way. pdqb's sleek and melancholic electro originals carry a sexy 1980s reminiscing vibe, not too unknown from classic US electro disco-styled pop music. They meet warehouse remixes from DJ Sotofett, known for his top-notch electro productions on Clone and Tresor, as well as funky breakbeat, afro-dub and all-things-house on his own labels Wania and Sex Tags Mania. The remix of pdqb's electrocognition-beauty 'Giallactrus' has heavier, almost p-funk styled electro beats, live scratching complementing the block party approach while retaining the vibe of the original. Elysiaamore, pdqb's sonic love letter to Tangerine Dream, gets a bit of melodic menace treatment by DJ Sotofett, turning it into an intensified breakbeat juxtaposition with Junglized B-Boy elements... again without taking away the energy from the original. The vinyl version was cut by DJ Sotofett with optimal club sonics at Manmade Mastering, Berlin.

“Everything flows – nothing remains, there is only an eternal becoming and changing” is a well-known formulation of the river theory of the Greek philosopher Heraclitus, also known as panta rhei (ancient Greek: πάντα ῥεῖ, “everything flows”). This teaching states that everything in the universe is subject to constant change and that nothing stays the same forever. The metaphor of the river illustrates this: You can't step into the same river twice because both the river and you are constantly changing. The water is constantly flowing, but the river stays in one place. Thus, reality is constantly changing, even if sometimes perceived as constant.”

For the 26th time, the most consistent of all ambient compilations, in a constant flux of static change, is released on Kompakt. Joining good friends from the early days and reliable confidants are some new additions to the non-hierarchical charts of contemplative rapture culture.

Leading the way is Micå, a Japanese electronic musician whose finely chiseled, graceful musical style has made it onto the new collection with two pieces. Also making his debut is Richard Ojijo, a seasoned sound engineer known, among other things, for his long-standing collaboration with the artist Marcel Odenbach and the Cologne-based label Magazine. Oskø aka Max Hytrek, a multi-talented newcomer to Kompakt and the music scene, debuts with his rapturously ecstatic piece "Ar Vag." He's followed by Sebastian Mullaert, appearing for the second time—this time teamed up with Sebastian Lilja aka Hush Forever. After his surprise return last year after a 20 year hiatus, we are delighted that Tetsuo Sakae aka Pass Into Silence is back again this year with one of his distinctive sound gems. As are Dirk Leyers (Closer Musik) and Mikkel Metal. 18 tracks are featured on this CD. "Erlösung" (Redemption) is the title of Segensklang's closing track. A kind of ambient bolero into infinity. Or at least until next year...

And what would Pop Ambient be without the iconic, artistic cover design of Veronika Unland, who once again, in her unmistakable way, says through the digital flower: The eye always listens...

When Chuck D proclaimed "Bass, how low can you go?" on Public Enemy's anthemic 'Bring the Noise,' maybe he was pre-empting or inciting the 10,000 fathoms-deep, spine-bending basslines and sub-quake tremors of 'Implosion.'

Implosion is a crushing split album, appropriately released on The Bug's own PRESSURE label. Mapping out a new form of spectral dub, the sound is deliberately immersive, introverted, and yes, definitely implosive. In pursuit of heavy lids, blurred vision, and merciless bass bin punishment, it’s one part meditation, two parts low-end theory, and essentially a confession of devoted sound system addiction.

As expected from a tag team featuring British soundlab explorer and 'London Zoo' composer Kevin Martin, aka The Bug, and Michael Fiedler, aka Jah Schulz—a long-time graduate of Germany's new school of sound system reggae culture—the duo approaches their target differently yet share the goal of keeping their sound "raw" (Fiedler) and "brutally minimal" (Martin). This proves that opposites can attract, even if their tools are different and their methods sometimes diverge.

From such a disparate combo, hailing from different geographical and aesthetic backgrounds, contrasts are certainly on display, even within each artist's own contributions. From the melancholia and transcendence of 'Alien Virus (West Indian Centre, Leeds),' to the duality of ascension and descension on 'Hope,' or the Sunn 0))) in dub, visceral drone of 'Dread (The End, London),' to the tripped-out repetitions of 'Midnight,' which reinvents Chain Reaction for post-millennials, the result is both sacred and narcotic. Each track illuminates the emotional impact and atmospheric pressure being explored across this deceptively sparse album—a mastery of tone and texture.

This collection might be as reduced, minimal, and deep as The Bug has ever gone, perhaps echoing the solemnity of his recent Kevin Richard Martin Black release and invoking the futurist steppas self-pioneered on his previous Pressure album. Alternatively, Fiedler‘s Ghost Dubs project ventures into his most heavyweight direction yet, which is no mean feat considering his previous, the critically acclaimed album Damaged, was a monstrously massive triumph of analogue weight and enviable sound design.

Implosion is ice-cool, a stark contrast to the warmth and sociability of traditional Jamaican roots and the current trends in digi-dub. Instead, the mood is soaked in tension and intense dread, finding an unexpected melting point where classic dub's stark rhythm attack, isolationist ambience's eerie drift, dub techno's floatation strategies, and even the relentless riffs of doom metal collide. As the bass-obsessed pair drop what is arguably the heaviest ambient dub album to emerge from any electronic sector—a moody counterpoint to The Orb's fluffy clouds, etc, Martin has cited The Roots Radics, Black Jade, and On U Sound's Pounding System as heavily influencing his approach to the album, while Fiedler has expressed his admiration for Adrian Sherwood's productions and Rhythm & Sound's enchanting soundscape. Yet, the super heavyweight pulsations, emotive resonances, and bone-rattling vibrations detonated here effortlessly go far beyond these influences.

Shadowy and elusive, there’s a mysteriousness at this record's core. A haunting moodiness oscillating between nostalgia and future shock. Despite the deadly fixation with SLOW and HEAVY, the album maintains a totally hypnotic swing throughout. Implosion and its lead single 'Imploded Versions' are testaments to being enveloped in bass, seduced by bass, submerged in bass, and utterly crushed by bass, as The Bug and Ghost Dubs seek to craft a new form of dub for zonal headz and Babylon seekers.

Mastered by Stefan Betke (a.k.a. POLE) at Scape Mastering studio, this record is heavy as f-ck without resorting to continuous distortion. It’s low-end worship taken to an absolute extreme, yet remains highly listenable and definitely danceable, albeit at the slowest of paces. Sacred and narcotic, this is low-end worship amplified to the max. Dive in if you dare.

Ixona ist das zweite Album des Chicagoer Komponisten Conor Mackey unter seinem Pseudonym Lynyn. Lynyns meisterhafte instrumentale Elektronikkompositionen, die hauptsächlich mit Hardware erstellt wurden, greifen auf eine Vielzahl von Einflüssen zurück, darunter Drum and Bass, Dub-Techno und Acid, und tauchen den Hörer in eine Umgebung ein, die sowohl weitläufig als auch überraschend intim ist. Während komplexe Breakbeats durch körnige Texturen und pointillistische Schwärme huschen, entsteht dieser Ort, der kein Ort ist, und erstrahlt. In den Jahren nach der Veröffentlichung von ,Lexicon" vertiefte sich Mackey in den Minimal-Dub-Techno der Jahrtausendwende von Künstlern wie Pole, Basic Channel und Deepchord. Das Album ,Loop-Finding-Jazz-Records" von Jan Jelinek hatte besonderen Einfluss auf Lynyns nächste Schritte. ,Es ist ein Album, bei dem man sich richtig in die Couch sinken lassen kann. Es ist extrem weitläufig, aber es fühlt sich sehr nah an - sehr eindringlich, aber gleichzeitig beruhigend", sagt er. ,Es gibt diese kleinen Vinyl-Klicks und -Knackser, und die Percussion besteht aus Mikro-Sounds, und dann gibt es diese Ebenen von Pads und Loops im Hintergrund. Auf Ixona habe ich versucht, diese Komponenten in den Stil zu integrieren, an dem ich seit Jahren arbeite."

Eric Broucek war der Ur-Ingenieur der fruchtbarsten Ära der DFA Studios, etwa von 2003 bis 2008 (niemand weiß genau, wie es damals war, da alles im Nebel des Chaos verloren gegangen ist). Er hatte seine Hand im Spiel bei allen Remixen, LPs und Dance-12s. Er war fast jeden Tag in diesem überladenen Equipment-Keller, nahm auf, mixte und bemühte sich, Tim und mir nicht die Augen zu verdrehen. Und irgendwo in diesem Nebel veröffentlichte er still und leise drei limitierte 12-Inch-Veröffentlichungen auf seinem eigenen Label Stickydisc Recordings - zwei unter dem Namen Babytalk und eine als Watussi zusammen mit einem weiteren DFA-Stammgast, Morgan Wiley. Damals wollte Eric seine Musik nicht auf DFA veröffentlichen. Er wollte seine eigene Identität entwickeln, was ihm auch gelang, indem er Musik herausbrachte, die mit ihrer einzigartigen schrägen, umgekehrten und zurückhaltenden Kraft vom DFA-Pfad abwich. Seine Musik ist so anders als alles andere aus dieser Zeit, so einzigartig, dass sie immer noch völlig zeitlos klingt. Vor ein paar Jahren begann ich wieder, die Tracks aufzulegen, und sah, wie die Welt immer noch von dem überrascht war, was Eric geschaffen hatte, und so entstand die Idee zu dieser Compilation. BERNADETTE BASCOM - I DON’T WANNA LOSE YOUR LOVE

I DON’T WANNA LOSE YOUR LOVE is a revered soulful gem courtesy of the incomparable Bernadette Bascom. The original 1981 ‘Solidarity’ 7s command a four figure price tag.

Reissued again due to high demand and presented here is an extended version which includes a sublime instrumental break - crafted by Philip Ward.

CAN’T YOU FEEL MY LOVE on the B Side is a sultry smouldering song from a demo session that Bernadette recorded some twenty years ago, produced by the famous Sir Mix-A-Lot.

Before he became better known as Porn Sword Tobacco (PST), Swedish producer Henrik Jonsson released two albums under the name of Stress Assassin. Like his later oeuvre, the tunes are spacious, cinematic and multi-layered, influenced by the likes of Harold Budd and Tangerine Dream, but for this project there is additional guidance from Lee Perry and Moritz von Oswald.

Released on vinyl for the first time, Within the Office of Eye and Ear’s smoked-out ambience and blissful beats are permeated with melodic bass and cinematic space. Found sounds, floating voices and intermittent pops ripple amongst the sweet harmonies, lush atmospheres and pulsating basslines, creating a captivating other-worldly dreamspace.

As Henrik explains: “Made often at night in an attic in Gothenburg, it’s music I did in a world far away from today: the music was, and is, about not running along with a stress-y society soaked in TV, media and materialism, out of touch with the calm beauty this world gives us”

He certainly succeeded as Within the Office of Eye and Ear offers the ultimate stress assassination.

This second EP from Alex Jungle comes with the standard amount of chaos and confusion, what with it being titled Chapter Three. But once again, Alex drops four demented breakbeat tracks, flexing his muscles with both the old skool and the classic jungle styles, yet keeping his eyes on progression and innovation. The only thing better than having this Chapter Three EP would be having Chapter Two as well.

Eternal Atake is the second studio album by Lil Uzi Vert and features a guest appearance from American singer Syd. The production was handled by Bobby Raps, Brandon Finessin, Bugz Ronin, Chief Keef, Oogie Mane, TM88, Wheezy, and more. The album was supported by the singles "Futsal Shuffle 2020" and "That Way", which later appeared as the album's bonus tracks. On release Eternal Atake received widespread acclaim from critics, debuting at number one on the US Billboard 200

Autechre setzen ihre chronologische Reihe von LP-Neuauflagen mit den Alben Untilted (2005) und Quaristice (2008) fort. Keines der beiden wurde seit seiner Erstveröffentlichung neu aufgelegt, beide sind über 15 Jahren kaum erhältlich. Die Nachfrage hat in der Zwischenzeit für begehrte Wiederverkäufe unter Fans gesorgt, die diese Musik auf Vinyl hören möchten. Die Neuauflagen erscheinen zu einem besonders aktiven Zeitpunkt für Autechre, die sich auf eine ihrer bisher umfangreichsten Live-Tourneen vorbereiten, darunter eine komplett ausverkaufte Serie mit 25 Konzerten in 29 Tagen durch die USA, Kanada und Mexiko im Oktober sowie Tourneen in der EU (August) und Großbritannien (November). Autechre veröffentlichten zuletzt im November 2024 neue Musik im Rahmen des laufenden digitalen Projekts AE_2022–. »Reise der Schatten« (»Journey of Shadows«) is the soundtrack to the eponymous debut feature-length animation film by Swiss artist Yves Netzhammer. Composed by Anthony Pateras and released as a stand- alone album through Hallow Ground, the 29 pieces are based on »weird folk melodies ornamented with electro-acoustics to give the film a more fantastical, fairy-tale feeling,« as the composer puts it. His extensive international recording sessions with a slew of guest musicians results in a record imbued with a sense of mystical surrealism, otherworldly and haunting.

»Reise der Schatten« tells the abstracted story of a genderless being coming to terms with its identity and place in a world full of conflicts and systems of control. »The film was made with old animation software that only works on Mac OS 9. So already, we are in a very hermetic, unique space,« says Pateras. Having tried (and failed) to compose something »typically experimental,« he went for long walks in the Australian bushlands and came home with something else: the idea to create a soundtrack that would create »a kind of distance, or perceptual shift, but also a narrative drive and emotional context which is not always clear.«

While recording the album, the tētēma co-founder did not use digitally generated sound, instead workingwith live instrumentation whose sound palette was enriched by the use of feedback, tape delay, analogue synthesizers, and samples from vinyl records. Wanting to work primarily with acoustic instruments suchas the clarinet made Pateras embark on a complicated journey of his own. The initial recording sessions took place in Basel on metallophones that were designed by Domenico Melchiorre’s Lunason company and laid the foundation for everything that came after.

Pateras recorded with musicians such as guitarist Alexander Garsden, viola player Erkki Veltheim, clarinetist Aviva Endean, multi-instrumentalist Justin Marshall and Lizzy Welsh on the viola d’amore among other instruments. He recorded percussion and recorders with Rohan Rebeiro and Natasha Anderson in his hometown of Castlemaine, double bass with Benjamin Ward in Sydney, bass and flutes with Jon Heilbron and Rebecca Lane in Berlin, and electronics in Zürich with Netzhammer. »Reise der Schatten« was thus a literal journey, made with a »big, international electro-acoustic ensemble.«

As a stand-alone album, »Reise der Schatten« opens up a space of its own. Its stylistic diversity makes it atmospherically and emotionally multi-faceted. As its composer notes, »music for screen can be very virtuosic, sophisticated, and variegated!« His own work is a testament to that claim.
