‘Hardcore Jollies’ was Funkadelic’s ninth studio album and their debut on Warner Bros Records. Released in October 1976 and dedicated to “the guitar players of the world”, it showed Funkadelic was the heaviest black rock band since Jimi Hendrix’s Band Of Gypsies (even featuring Buddy Miles on one track). With lead guitarists Michael Hampton and Eddie Hazel dazzling, the personification of funk Bootsy Collins on bass, Bernie Worrell’s keyboard wizardry and many more, the album was helmed by the genius of George Clinton. Reaching no.12 on the US R&B chart, the album spawned singles ‘Comin’ Round The Mountain’ (US R&B No.54) and ‘Smokey’ (US R&B No.96) and a live remake of 1973’s ‘Cosmic Slop’ from the album of the same name. Recorded during rehearsals for 1976’s P-Funk Earth Tour, this version features a vocal introduction dropped from the 1973 studio cut. Over 45 years since its original release, ‘Hardcore Jollies’ is among Funkadelic and George Clinton’s best-ever albums and remains a masterful example of their creative genius. Not so long ago Marlena Shaw was a forgotten figure. The talented vocalist had made several LPs for respected labels such as Cadet and Blue Note, and she'd performed regularly throughout the '60s and '70s. But she hardly had what you might call diva status. Falling into the unfortunate category that slips uneasily between soul and jazz, she was accepted - but not especially admired - by aficionados of either genre. Then came the '90s, and an open-minded enthusiasm for soul and jazz - and more importantly - everything in between - soon changed that. Marlena Shaw became an icon, and the diva status soon blossomed amongst her new-found soul-jazz fans.

Respect is a word that means much to any singer. The artist who stands up in the bright lights before an audience that has handed over their hard-earned cash has only their physical presence and naked voice to rely on. There is no hiding when you're on stage, you're the focus of attention and everybody is gawping at you. The singer yearns to communicate and entertain, and in return not only asks for appreciation and acceptance, but respect. To this end Marlena Shaw has endured decades of singing in the shadows, and she has only recently finally found her niche.

On Disc One we have 'California Soul', probably the most enduring and well-known of her many songs, but just a few seconds listening will tell you that it is much more than that. It's already a classic amongst those who have already seen the light and have danced and swayed to its timeless swing. Upon hearing it all lovers of soul, jazz – or any other kind of good music - will feel an aural glow as warm as the Californian sun. The song 'Liberation Conversation' on the flip was only ever available on her highly revered 1969 LP 'The Spice of Life'. This is where the 'Blues ain't nothing but a good woman gone bad' launches into an irresistible, relentless uptempo funk groove.

Disc Two showcases 'Wade in the Water', an ancient song rumoured to have been developed and popularised by slaves in the American south. The message is to pass on the notion that by fleeing in a bid for freedom through streams and rivers, the scent that bloodhounds use to follow their victims will be obscured. Marlena's version has long been a favourite dancefloor filler since its 45-only release back in 1966.

'Woman of the Ghetto' is one of her best-known songs and ends the set on the other side. The opening number from 'The Spice of Life', it's since been recognised for the classic it is, and as such has been afforded anthemic status. We release the original 45 version here, as used to promote the LP back in the day.

The third studio album from Rebecca Downes with 12 new, original blues-influenced, rock tracks all written by Steve Birkett and Rebecca. Album mixed by Bill Drescher and Chris Childs. The multi award winning Alan Nimmo (King King) plays guitar on If I Go To Sleep and Magnum’s Tony Clarkin delivers a fabulous guitar solo on Breathe Out. With her signature voice, style and song writing, it was little wonder that last year she was voted Female Vocalist of the Year at the FORM UKBlues Awards. The release of this jubilant new album once again gives her the chance to showcase her formidable powerhouse and gutsy vocals in tracks that have greater range and depth than anything she’s done before. Napoleon is the 2023 spectacle-filled action epic film that details the checkered rise and fall of the iconic French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, played by Oscar-winner Joaquin Phoenix. London-based rock duo, Yur Mum, is set to release their highly anticipated album, "Duality," on April 30, 2024. ‘Landmass’ Turtle’s first artist album since 2017’s ‘Human’. To be released on 24 March 2023, it is his third official album having also released the acclaimed ‘Who Knows’ EP in 2013.

‘Willson Williams’ witnesses the meeting of two likeminded musicians who’ve built their successful, independent careers on inventive folk instrumentation, reflective and sincere lyricism, and not a small amount of self-deprecation. Their modest confessionals, written poetically and over nostalgic and atmospheric melodies, are as relatable as ever, and together they find new ways to unpack their feelings.

One overarching theme on the album is that of grief, when the writing process saw them both, tragically, in mourning for separate loved ones; Dan for his brother Karl and his friend Scott Hutchinson of Frightened Rabbit, and Kathryn for her friend, comedian and BBC Radio 4 presenter Jeremy Hardy. They explain that “the initial premise and starting point for us was discussions and open conversations on bereavement. We’d both recently lost friends who were also in the public eye, and we talked about the strange place between personal loss and the communal grieving of a public figure”. Contrastingly, the music on ‘Willson Williams’ is warm, heartfelt and even cheerful, an opposing nature that is completely in keeping with both their humour and candidness.

Musicians include Aston 'Family Man' Barrett, Carlton Barrett, Robbie Shakespeare, Sly Dunbar, Ansel Collins, Ossie Hibbert, Earl 'Chinna' Smith, Tommy McCook, Cornell Campbell, Jackie Mittoo. Both The Aggravators and The Revolutionaries were influential in creating the distinctive sound of reggae music during its formative years, contributing their talents as studio bands behind some of the most significant recordings in the history of Jamaican music. 'Guerilla Dub' provides an illustration and insight into the close working relationships between the many producers, musicians and mixing engineers who created so many of Jamaica's marvellous musical masterpieces during its golden age and how interwoven and interconnected they were during this period of intense musical creativity.

Ball – has announced the arrival of their eagerly awaited debut album, 'Dark Light’. "These songs have
been many years in the making... Some of these ideas were crafted before MWWB, this is something
I've always wanted to do. Over the last couple of years, I’ve spent some time on finishing and crafting
these ideas and pieces of music into songs. Some were snippets of lyrics from my early twenties which
reflect on what seems like a different person. I think it’s quite poetic how it’s all come together now.”

Recall IV is the project created by Andre Fischer that reached a massive success in the German techno scene in 1990 with the release of the single “Contrast” on Techno Drome International / ZYX Records. This was shortly followed by two more releases in 1991 (“Contrast – Part 2” and the extended play “Aesthetic”) and contributions to various compilations.

Andre has been a very active techno composer and producer since the late 80’s working with people like Lars Janzik, Carlos Perón, Giora Schein & Holger Wick (Konzept), Volker Then (Friends Of Carlotta) on countless projects including Scope, Scrot, Technoline, Trust in 6, ADSX, etc.

“Interstate” compiles tracks from all Recall IV singles, some old compilations and a selection of unreleased cuts and remixes. Limited edition of 500 copies on double vinyl with insert (thick black cardboard with die-cut logo) and sticker.

'Welcome to Hotel Heaven' is a fresh start for is George van den Broek, a young man with an old soul and the voice to match. His music as Yellow Days fittingly, feels both of his era and completely other: a woozy mixture of soul, blues, psych, and groove leaking through the walls of a jazz lounge that's come unstuck in time. A self-taught multi-instrumentalist, George has never fit into one style or space. Despite George being an old soul — he hates social media, loves vinyl, and collects old cameras — Yellow Days really is a project about youth and modernity: “Hotel Heaven represents fake comfort in all its forms, this whole bullshit idea of luxury where nothing is real,” explains George. “There are so many young people who are living that kind of life. Because of the cost of living crisis, people are spending all they’ve got on a bag of white powder just to make them feel nice. Their jaws are still swinging at four o’clock in the morning, but they’re not saying anything. I wanted to write about these people and everything that is happening right now. This TikTok age where everyone wants to be famous. It’s also a big 360 of my life and career to date. Bach und Jazz - diese Verbindung besteht seit mehr als 60 Jahren und ist mittlerweile längst nicht mehr neu - aber wieder immer neu zu entdecken. Und mit "About Bach" ist die aktuelle LP-Veröffentlichung der Vinyl-Edition Black Forest Sounds ein weiterer musikalischer und klanglicher Leckerbissen für Musikfreunde, eingespielt von Johannes Mössinger im Ensemblehaus des Freiburger Barockorchesters auf einem Steinway D-Flügel. Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) ist unstrittig einer der wichtigsten Komponisten überhaupt. Seine Musik übt auf viele Musiker einen Reiz aus, vor allem aber auf Jazzer. Spätestens seit der Franzose Jacques Loussier Ende der 50er Jahre mit "Play Bach" die Grenzüberschreitung zwischen zwei Musikwelten etablierte, haben sich viele Jazzmusiker vor allem eben mit J.S. Bach beschäftigt und diesen immer wieder neu aufgearbeitet... Hier ein weiteres Meisterwerk, eingespielt vom Freiburger Pianisten Johannes Mössinger, der sich seit vielen Jahren (auch) mit Bach beschäftigt. Der 1964 geborene Musiker ist seit fast 30 Jahren auf der Jazzszene aktiv, unternahm aber Ausflüge in die Klassik und hat seit vielen Jahren immer wieder Bach-Themen aufgenommen. Im Jazz arbeitete er mit zahlreichen US-Musikern, wie Joe Lovano, Joel Frahm, Don Bradon und Adam Nussbaum zusammen, um mit denen vor allem seine eigenen Kompositionen zu präsentieren. Mösssinger hat seine ganz eigene Sichtweise auf Bach und kombiniert Bach mit seiner eigenen Musik: "Wie Mössinger Bach verwandelt, so verwandelt die Musik auch den Zuhörenden: Ein Gang durch eine sorgfältig kuratierte Gegenüberstellung, die den Blick auf Bach schärft, herausfordert und verändert. Bach hat sich bewegt, wurde bewegt, hat seine Räumlichkeit verändert und die Position gewechselt. Am Ende scheint ein anderes Licht darauf", schreibt die Musikerin und Autorin Maria Reich in den Liner Notes zur LP.

Somehow Klasse Wrecks has made it to 50 official releases, not bad for a label that wears its ignorance for others and 'the norm' proudly on its dirty sleeve. Over the years the label has released a multitude of various sounds, spanning bleep, rave, deep house, down tempo and the 50th release does well to encapsulate that free spirit and openess. Without much planning and totally by way of coincidence the responsibility lies with label co-owner Luca Lozano and its sonically a typical mixed bag as to be expected. Kicking off with restless acid stomping, the title track barges through the door...knocks over a few drinks before blossoming into a breakdown that propels the 303 deep into space and back again. On the A2, Lozano shows off his love for creaky breakbeats and DX donks on a track called 'Re-Mix'...which as far as we know isnt a remix of anything at all. The flip contains more raving beauties, 'Save Me From The Rave' might be a desperate plea but by the sounds of it he's still enjoying the madness, the producer makes an epic breakdown that might well signify the end of all Trance homages. Then the final track of the EP sounds like it could be played in a field in Glastonbury in 1993, its haunting vocal harmonies signify the sun is coming up soon and likely that we're about to start Chapter 2 of the Wrecks Wrebellion. Released back in 1988, Godflesh’s self-titled EP is still one of the most powerful and dark recordings the duo ever caught on tape. The slow, pummeling grind of ‘Avalanche Master Song’ is as iconic as the record’s immediately recognisable monochrome cover, laying down the blueprint for their seminal ‘Streetcleaner’ album, whilst tracks like the driving ‘Veins’ prove that guitarist/vocalist Justin Broadrick’s unique melodic sensibility was in full effect right from day one.

This 1997 compilation collects three of Entombed's classic EPs in full (namely, 1991's Crawl, 1992's Stranger Aeons and 1994's Out Of Hand) alongside some other rarities and unreleased gems. Featuring a diverse array of covers of bands like Repulsion, Kiss, Unsane and Roky Erickson alongside the band's own material, this compilation gives a great insight into the myriad of influences that went into creating Entombed's unique sound.
