When Bob Vylan won the first MOBO award for Best Alternative Music Act in 2022, the punk-grime duo took to the stage and used the platform to speak about how they managed to achieve the impossible as independent artists in a genre-defying space. “We released an album this year that we produced entirely, mixed entirely, recorded entirely, all from my bedroom…so everybody that’s here, bigging up Atlantic and bigging up Warner, fuck that, us man did it ourselves”.

Humble as the Sun, the forthcoming album from Bob Vylan continues with much of the rage and urgency that they have come to be known and loved for, but this latest project shows that they are now stronger and wiser, bolstered by the wins and learnings that they have fought hard for along the way. Kane Pour is a songwriter and multimedia artist who lives in Gainesville, FL, and has been making loop and guitar-based electronic music since 2004. His work often leans into the subtle and murky emotions that dwell beneath the surface, calling forth themes of care, sadness, and tenderness of the human soul. With a wide sonic palette and sense of humor, he puts his love of harmony and space first, slowly dimming through soft landscapes of various textures. The Last Wave is a spiritual successor to Sun People Sleepwalker, an album Kane Pour released as Pospulenn in 2010. The album is a series of ambient guitar meditations on reconciling painful memories, growing, and reclaiming identity. The Last Wave was recorded at the onset of the Covid pandemic when Pour was home isolating. He put together the songs and walked around at night listening to them, feeling intense loneliness in the present, but finding comfort in having time to reflect on his past. The tone and aesthetic of the album evolved over time but Pour named it The Last Wave because he thought it might be his last album or the last living remnant of his soul left after the world fell apart.

THE YUM YUMS have been Norway's leading power pop ambassadors for nearly 20 years, and still going strong with a solid following outside of Norway. Power-pop, with 70's punk and glam rock influences, played fast with sweet harmonies that would give The Beach Boys cavities. "Sweet As Candy" was originally released in two different versions. First in 1997 by german label Screaming Apple, then, a year later on Universal Music in Norway. This here is the Norwegian version on vinyl for the first time.

With its latest record, The Lamb As Effigy or Three Hundred And Fifty XOXOXOS For A Spark Union With My Darling Divine, the band has translated this intent into an ambitious work that pairs its resplendent scale with uncompromising honesty towards the band's artistic and conceptual essences. The most extraordinary of art isn't created without its fair share of trials, of which Sprain faced numerous during the recording process of The Lamb As Effigy, with the sum and circumstances of them nearly sealing the album's fate in limbo. With obstacles including session reschedulings as a result of a line-up change and a major studio electrical failure at the last possible moment, a mixing process that demanded the organization of several years of material across four separate studios, and the recording of the actual songs pushing the members of Sprain to their own physical limits, there were several times where the band considered scrapping the whole thing altogether. But Sprain persevered, applying the knowledge and willpower derived from those struggles to get The Lamb As Effigy across the finish line. Clocking in at nearly two hours, The Lamb As Effigy resembles an aural parallel to the human experience itself, with all the glorious beauty, crushing brutality, and unexplainable chaos that comes with it intact. Explosions of earth-sundering guitars, angelic keys, swirling strings, and bursts of improvised electronic noise coalesce to weave a visceral yet unique sonic tapestry bearing hints of no-wave, sound collage, 20th-century avant-garde, and free jazz. Spanning bellowing howls, emphatic spoken word, and nuanced croons, Alex Kent's dynamic vocal delivery adds texture to these eight meditations on otherwise immaterial topics and the meaning or the lack thereof they embody.

Die australischen WOODS OF DESOLATION haben sich in aller Stille zu einem der weltweit herausragenden Vertreter des atmosphärischen Black Metal entwickelt. Art As Catharsis präsentiert die neue EP der australischen Metaller Tired Minds – eine schlammgetränkte Portion metallischer Post-Hardcore. Mit düsteren Instrumentaltracks, leidenschaftlicher Lyrik und spannungsgeladenen Kompositionen offenbart 'The Body Is A Burden' die Wertschätzung der Band für Acts wie Converge, Touché Amore, La Dispute und Cult Leader. In vielerlei Hinsicht fühlt sich die EP wie ein Liebesbrief an einige der besten melodischen Heavy-Acts der letzten zwei Jahrzehnte an, obwohl sie mit einer Eindringlichkeit und Intensität vorgetragen wird, die zeigt, dass Tired Minds auf der Höhe ihres Könnens sind.

Mit ausgelassenen Post-Rock-Soundkulissen (Mogwai, Sleepmakeswaves, Explosions In The Sky) ist die neue Bear The Mammoth-LP für die australischen Post-Rock-Veteranen eine triumphale Rückkehr zu alter Form. Purple Haus setzt ihre Experimentierfreude mit Kompositionsstilen und Songstrukturen fort, gepaart mit Inspirationen von Künstlern wie PVT, Com Truise und Boards Of Canada. Das Ergebnis bringt die Band an ihre Grenzen: Riffs treffen auf Synths, während die Stücke von Track zu Track lauter oder leiser werden. So unterstreichen zum Beispiel in Freshwater sanfte Höhen, ohrenbetäubende Tiefen, dröhnende Verzerrungen und zarte Verzögerungen die Stärken der Band in nur einem einzigen, energiegeladenen Track.

Das UK-Pop-Punk-Quartett As December Falls blieb stets seiner unabhängigen Selbstvermarktung treu. Angefangen bei dem selbstbetitelten Debütalbum (2019) über den von John Mitchell (Enter Shikari, You Me At Six, Architects) produzierten Nachfolger 'Happier' (2020) bis zu 'Mayday', der ersten Single aus dem neuen Album 'Join The Club'. Es ist ihr bislang ehrgeizigster Track mit einer härteren Soundrichtung, die man von der Band bisher nicht kannte. Produziert von Alex Copp (Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes), abgemischt von Stevie Knight (Stand Atlantic, Yours Truly) und gemastert von Grant Berry (All Time Low, Hot Milk, Deaf Havana) leitet 'Mayday' das dritte As December Falls-Album ein, mit dem die Band einen weiteren Riesenschritt nach vorne macht.
