Produced by director Matthew Cullen and mastered by Howie Weinberg (Beastie Boys, Nirvana, The Ramones), their tenth studio album brims with the slowly-matured vocal of Evan Dando as he lures a host of personal faves to his melodic lair. 'Larry Jon Wilson He can break your heart with a voice like a cannonball.' - Kris Kristofferson. Larry Jon Wilson came to the party late. When he arrived in Nashville, country soul pioneer Tony Joe White had already made six albums. Townes Van Zandt had made seven, Mickey Newbury eight. Kristofferson, the accepted High Priest of the New Nashville, had made five. Larry Jon, by the time he arrived, had spent ten years in corporate America. He did not start playing guitar until the age of 30, but five years later he released his debut, New Beginnings (1975) and followed it just a year later with Let Me Sing My Song To You, both on Monument Records. A revelation among the hipsters and critics of Nashville, the LPs ensured Larry Jon was immediately embraced as part of the mid-70s 'outlaw country movement' that eschewed slick production in favour of a raw, gritty approach. When a film crew came to document this burgeoning sound, they made straight for Larry Jon's door. The legendary Heartworn Highways (1981) featured his mesmerising performance of 'Ohoopee River Bottomland'. He was a singer and writer of intensely private, painfully moving tales of southern life. With his deep, papa-bear voice, funky southern groove, and richly evocative narratives of rural Georgia, Larry Jon was a unique stylist but his gutsy, greasy sound did not translate into sales. Too funky for the country crowd, too heartfelt for pop radio, he fell between the cracks.

The Moments' On Top is a perfect example of symphonic soul. Amongst true heads, this is considered the most valuable of all their albums; an original copy of this LP, if you can find one, starts at around $75. Alongside contemporaneous acts from the early 70s - The Chi-lites, The Stylistics, The Delfonics, The Futures, Blue Magic and The Main Ingredient - The Moments exuded all that was compelling about deep, harmony-drenched, string-laden soul. The standout here is undoubtedly 'To You with Love", a floating, tender ballad sung by Harry Ray that features the group's patented handclap-tambourine combo, sweetly repetitive strings, serene guitar and gentle piano. It was famously sampled by J Dilla for 'Last Donut Of The Night' - the gut-wrenching finale to his seminal Donuts. Concentrating solely on its sampled history would do The Moments a huge disservice, but its crucial appearance at the climax of Donuts directed fresh generations of pre-disposed soul fans to the absolute canon. Judged entirely on its merit, it's one of the most heart-breaking songs of any decade and worth the price of admission alone. It's the sweetest, most goose-bump inducing 3 minutes of aural bliss you're ever likely to be exposed to. If that wasn't enough, On Top spawned two minor R&B hits: 'All I Have' and 'Lucky Me", each featuring Billy Brown's ice-melting falsetto. Opener 'All I Have' is a sumptuous introduction to the album. With melancholic, understated guitar licks, twinkling keys and heartbeat drums, it's a gem.

The man himself created an 8 tracks LP which truly represents our spirit of experimentation, this time round steering towards a more jazzy influenced hip-hop, shaped up staying true to the sound we love. 'The Sound' LP features dope collaborations such as the Detroit vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Brownstudy singing on the opening and title track, the amazing progressive artist Maia Von Lekow giving her voice for B1 track 'Mother' alongside Mista Monk, the superb Han Litz's flute and Trujillo on Kellin' it & also Divine Species on 'Galaxies' and Mr. Shem rapping on A3 track 'Dedicated to Mr. Schem'. This work is a bold and captivating selection of different styles belonging to the same soul orchestrated by Inkswel and his musical mastermind, listening to 'The Sound' is like jumping on a caravan for a journey where every track is a different stop: crunching beats, deep bass lines, psychedelic melodies. The ingredients for this amazing recipe are all coming from different parts of the planet, a place that Inskwel seem to have written on his palms seen his capability of bringing different music influences under the same roof, where he finally invited Apparel Tronic to hang for a bit.

Arguably one of the most acclaimed and loved bands of the past 20 years, by both fans and their musical peers alike, The Beta Band formed in St. Andrews, Scotland, in 1996. Innovative and singular, their unique musical and aesthetic approach to everything they did set them far apart from their musical contemporaries. Together for a relatively short period of time, the three albums and three EPs they released between 1996 and 2004 would nonetheless help define them as one of the most exciting and cherished bands of their generation. Released in 1999, the album The Beta Band' followed the critically acclaimed compilation The Three E.P.'s' (1998). With high anticipation for The Beta Band, the band originally planned to record the album in four separate continents, but financial constraints slimmed the recording locations down, however, the album was still recorded in a variety of locations and pulling inspiration from sources as diverse as Jamaican reggae, Disney's movie The Black Hole' and Bonnie Tyler's Total Eclipse of the Heart".

Upon examining the eventful life of Can bassist Holger Czukay, one might
conclude that this intrepid musician was a loner. His turbulent career exuded
an enduring eccentricity governed by a boundless free spirit. Yet Czukay,
who passed away unexpectedly last year at the age of 79, constantly
emphasized that his creativity was always contingent upon a musical
partner, whether that was a skin-and-bones counterpart or an anonymous
manifestation that interacted with him through radio waves or, as happened
ater, the internet. Nonetheless, most of his partners were of flesh and
blood.
His oeuvre, which is in itself cinematic in nature, boasts a cast worthy of a
Martin Scorsese film. Only the most interesting character actors were cast:
Brian Eno, Phew, Rolf Dammers, David Sylvian, Annie Lennox, Jah Wobble,
his Can bandmates... the list could go on and on.
Many of these masterpieces are now out of print, so Groenland Records,
who already released the highly acclaimed retrospective 'CINEMA' to mark
he occasion of Holger's 80th birthday at the beginning of the year, has
aken it upon themselves to release reissues of Holger's music in order to
make it accessible once again.

"In 1978, Nova performed for Obama. Well, kind of: Nova was the band for the Punahou School prom in Honolulu, Hawaii, and a young student named Barack (known then as 'Barry') was in attendance.

Backtrack to 1976, and Nova was the opening band for Donald Byrd at the nearby Blaisdell Arena. The day was Sunday, June 27. The following day, Isaac Hayes would perform on island for the admission price of $1.

Nova, led by singer Checo Tohomaso, was one of several go-to party bands during the golden era of Hawaii funk and soul music in the mid-1970s through early 1980s.

The band's infectious gospel-funk-disco can be heard on their sole release, a self-titled 1980 LP that feels like one big party recorded live in the studio. (Check out the Marvin Gaye-inspired 'I Feel Like Getting Down' on the 2016 'Aloha Got Soul' compilation on Strut Records).

The story is all too familiar, however: funk band releases LP, the music goes dormant in years to follow, and today original copies sell for hundreds online.

Not long after the album's 1980 release, Checo met Marvin Gaye, who was living on Maui (where George Benson also resided). Shortly after, Marvin invited Checo and his counterparts to join his multi-city tour across Europe. Videos of Checo rocking keyboards, percussion and singing background vocals for Marvin Gaye's last European tour can be found online.

Checo, born in Florida yet raised in lush Manoa Valley as well as Okinawa, Japan, now resides in Vancouver, Canada, where he leads the VOC Sweet Soul Gospel Choir and continues to deliver his signature sound: high energy, positive, 'sweet soul' music.

As Longitude is the Berlin based duo Eva Geist and Ondula, which started to make its place on the new electronic scene after brillant release last year on Knekelhuis and apparence on Ein Welt...
On this EP we fall in their psychedelic madness, mixing hypnotic sounds, voices and Saxo, in a very punkish way, to come back to our bestial primitive instincts, when we were still close from animals.

to be counted among the foundation
stones of the Canterbury scene
of the mid-to-late Sixties. After
their departure from the band, the
members formed other two seminal
groups of the Canterbury Sound: Soft
Machine (Robert Wyatt, Kevin Ayers,
and Hugh Hopper) and Caravan
(David Sinclair, Richard Sinclair, Pye
Hastings, and Richard Coughlan).
The name is of course an homage
to Oscar Wilde, and this album is a
selection of some of their rarest gems
that originally came out in 1994.

Released in 1976, Distinctive Themes / Race To Achievement is legendary arranger Nick Ingman exploring the two distinct ideas of 'impressive themes varying in style from 'Basie to Elgar'' and 'a study in the pressure and rewards of achievement'.Distinctive Themes is a veritable indulgence of variously-tempoed, full orchestra, big band workouts, from relaxed swing to more propulsive themes. The progressively building 'Expanding Markets' is a true highlight, with its rolling pianos, contemplative electric guitar solos and moody horns over skipping beats.
The dramatic 'Against The Odds' is another stand-out.
Race To Achievement is all rugged funk with stabbing chords and strutting horns and it's probably our favourite side. Of course we have to acknowledge the fantastic 'Tense Preparation', sampled by Prince Paul and Dan The Automator for Handsome Boy Modeling School's seminal 'Magnetizing' with Del Tha Funky
Homosapien. But the whole side's range from tense underscores to fast and punchy chase themes makes this is a gem of the KPM catalogue.
As with all ten re-issues, the audio for Distinctive Themes / Race To Achievement comes from the original analogue tapes and has been remastered for vinyl by Be With regular Simon Francis. We've taken the same care with the sleeves, handing the reproduction duties over to Richard Robinson, the current
custodian of KPM's brand identity.
