Acclaimed Swedish multimedia artist and electronic music visionary TOBIAS BERNSTRUP returns with his highly anticipated new 7th studio album, “Shadow Dancer”, on German indie label Nadanna Records.

Known for his fusion of visual art, retro-futuristic aesthetics, and Italo-inspired synthpop, BERNSTRUP’s latest offering dives deep into the shadows of the dancefloor—where desire, danger, and digital nostalgia collide. “Shadow Dancer” marks a bold evolution in BERNSTRUP’s sound, channeling pulsating analog synths, icy vocal hooks, and cinematic atmosphere into a darkly euphoric collection of tracks. The album explores themes of identity, transformation, and nocturnal seduction, blending BERNSTRUP’s signature 1980s stylings with a sharply contemporary edge.

“This album explores the tension between appearance and reality—how we perform identity, desire, and memory in a world flooded with simulation,” says BERNSTRUP. “It’s both a personal and cultural reflection, rooted in the shadowy edges of nightlife, surveillance, and performance.”

Standout single tracks like “Chiaroscuro”, “Legend”, “And The Smile” and “Jackie 60” showcase BERNSTRUP’s unique ability to fuse melancholic nostalgia with dancefloor-ready energy. The album’s visual aesthetic is just as striking, featuring dystopian glam imagery, gothic noir, and sleek, gender-fluid costuming.

Bernstrup who works both as a visual artist and musician has been touring worldwide since the late 1990s and positioned himself as one of the leading re-inventors of Italo Disco with his unique mix of Italo, Synthpop and Gothic noir. He has created his own unmistakable stage persona wearing androgynous outfits in shiny latex and heavy make-up. Tobias has collaborated with seminal artists such as Trans-X, Apoptygma Berzerk, Martial Canterel, Xeno & Oaklander, Lebanon Hanover, and She Past Away.

'Technophobic' contains 10 smashing tracks including the recent single 'Utopia', and 'Metropolis of Tomorrow' featuring French dark synth wave artist HANTE. Combining influences from classic synthpop, minimal wave, dark wave in a retro futuristic manner TOBIAS BERNSTRUP has created an album reminiscent of the 80s but in a contemporary context of sound landscape.

Tobias Bernstrup is a contemporary musician and video artist born 1970 in Gothenburg, Sweden. He received an MFA from Royal College University of Fine Arts Stockholm in 1998. Using the visual language of pop culture, video games, sci-fi, classicism and gothic noir, he has created a stage persona with notorious live performances. Dressed in elaborate costumes of skin-tight rubber suits and fetish gear, Tobias' external appearance is androgynous. He raises questions about representation of identity, the body and physical space in both virtual and non-virtual realities. Between 1997 and 1998 he self-released two limited CD-R EPs. In 2002 his debut album 'Re-Animate Me' was released by Tonight Records followed by two limited 12' singles for the song 27' and the Italian version Ventisette'.

27' is a 5-song EP collecting 4 different mixes of the title track plus one unreleased song from the 'Re-Animate Me' recording sessions. The material on this EP is closely connected with the world of computer games which Bernstrup also inhabits. Bernstrup's music is influenced by 1980s Italo disco and synth pop, reminiscent of Kraftwerk, Depeche Mode and Ken Lazlo. On the A-side is the original mix at 115 bpm followed by the Lazer Mix set to an faster beat and additional arpeggiations and heavier bass drum beats. Lyrically the song tells the story of a good looking 27-year old boy from a small town searching for love with any man who can spoil him. On the B-side are both the vocal and instrumental of Ventisette', the Italian translation of the song 27.' Both versions of Ventisette' are stripped back compared to the A-side but keep the melodies in tact. Also released for the first time ever is the demo Dirty Money' a Pet Shop Boys influenced song about male prostitutes ready for a night out working the streets.

All songs have been remastered for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios. For the jacket Eloise Leigh transformed the original portrait of Tobias into a Warhol-like painted polaroid with a striking likeness to Liza Minelli with blue eye shadow and red lipstick. Each copy includes a photo postcard with lyrics and notes. I would rather create alternative routes to experiencing and understanding the world, understanding what it means to be human today,' says Bernstrup. We are more artificial than we want to admit.'

WE THE NORTH is Swedish musician Johan Hansson who has been active in the dark electronic music since the early 2000’s with his project Cyanide, then Unitary, and also exploring dark metal with his project Mondocane. Johan defines his music created in WE THE NORTH as Nordic Noir “with an intentional and deliberate blending of the old with the new a melancholic hopefulness is created from the dark seasons of life in Scandinavia.”

“Love + Death” is WE THE NORTH’s fourth album and the first on NADANNA after contributing a remix of Tobias Bernstrup’s track “Private Eye” in 2021. The songs on “Love + Death” are birds of a feather, brimming over with melancholy and melody, yet driven by a hammering sixteenth note synth bass and sounds from the Roland TR-707 drum machine, and melancholic lyrics in English or Swedish.

This 6-track EP opens with an invitation to take a step back in time, with a charming introductory descent, like the opening of a post-rock album. A melancholy cry, "Felt Her Knife", follows our journey into the psyche of this EP, driven by Alpha Sect’s sentimental but powerful vocals. "Drowning" merges the boundaries of what is real and what is lost in an ocean of despair. Not all those who wander are lost, and the "Fight in the Light" shows, with its powerful rhythms, that our guidance is within us. The call is stronger than we
sometimes think.
The vinyl is completed with beautiful remixes by the Swedish synthwave legend Tobias Bernstrup and Radondo from Slow Motion Records, adding an extra touch of “dancefloor-oriented” hopelessness and melancholia. Have you felt her knife yet?

A strew of like-minded musicians have been called upon to bring their own unique ideas and styles to this album. Sweden’s Tobias Bernstrup offers his vocals in the environmentally minded “Rainbow Warrior,” while the unique and unmistakable voice of French pop icon Etienne Daho sings in the charged “Virus X”. Modern day electro-disco maestros feature with Carino Cat collaborating in the warming rays of “The Year of the Sun.” Newcomers to the scene are also represented, Francesca Diprima’s voice accompanying Fred Ventura’s in the lovelorn lament of “Since You Went Away”.
