Mit ihrem neuen Meisterwerk "Beautiful Distortion" melden sich THE GATHERING am 29.04.2022 eindrucksvoll zurück!

Satte 10 Jahre haben sich THE GATHERING, die mit Alben wie "Mandylion", "How To Measure A Planet?" oder "Souvenirs" zu internationalen Ikonen atmosphärischer Rockmusik wurden, für ihr neustes Werk Zeit gelassen, denn nach über 16 Jahren im Hamsterrad von Tourneen, die sich mit Albumaufnahmen abwechselten, um dann die nächste Tournee zu bestreiten, und dem Weggang ihres langjährigen Bassisten Marjolein Kooijman in 2013, brauchten die Musiker einfach mal eine Pause, um ihre Batterien wieder aufzuladen und sich um ihre Familien zu kümmern.

Ihr 25jähriges Bandbestehen 2014 haben THE GATHERING dennoch mit allen aktuellen und ehemaligen Bandmitgliedern im Doornroosje Club in Nijmegen groß gefeiert, um sich danach wieder in ihre selbst auferlegte musikalische Klausur zu begeben.

2018 dann war die Band wieder startklar. In Hugo Prinsen Geerligs, der bereits von 1989 bis 2003 die vier Saiten bei THE GATHERING bediente, fand man einen neuen Bassisten und die Gruppe begann, neue Songs zu schreiben und Konzerte zu spielen, bis 2020 die Pandemie zuschlug und alles um weitere zwei Jahre verzögerte.

Das 11.Studioalbum von THE GATHERING knüpft stilistisch an den Vorgänger "Disclosure" von 2012 an. Acht Titel, im für die Band typischen, satten Electro-Rock-Sound - auch als Trip Rock bekannt - , getoppt von wunderbaren Gesangsmelodien und der warmen Stimme von Sängerin Silje Wergeland machen "Beautiful Distortion" zum wahrscheinlich dynamischsten und melodischsten THE GATHERING-Album in ihrer über 30jährigen Bandgeschichte.

Produziert und gemixt wurde "Beautiful Distortion" von Attie Bauw (u.a. Judas Priest, Scorpions), der bereits bei den THE GATHERING-Alben "Home" und "How To Measure A Planet?" an den Reglern saß. Für das Mastering zeichnet Maor Appelbaum (u.a. Faith No More) verantwortlich.
Die Musik wurde von der Band im Arnold Muhren Studio in Volendam (NL) eingespielt, alle Gesangsparts wurden im Bergen Lydstudio in Norwegen aufgenommen.
"Beautiful Distortion" wurde in Dolby Atmos gemischt und kann auf allen Plattformen, die Dolby Atmos Mixe anbieten, gestreamt werden.

Sämtliche Bandmitglieder waren von Anfang an am kreativen Prozess und den Aufnahmen beteiligt, sowohl einzeln, online, als auch persönlich und gemeinsam, wann immer es möglich war. Es war zwar eine Herausforderung, während der Pandemie und den damit verbundenen Maßnahmen ein Album über zwei Länder hinweg zu schreiben und aufzunehmen, doch THE GATHERING haben auch dies mit Bravour gemeistert.

Zum 20-jährigen Jubiläum zurück -zweifarbiges Swirl Dopple-Vinyl und erste schwarze 2LP-Pressung seit der ursprünglichen Warner-Veröffentlichung 2005. Plus exklusives Glanzlack-Sleeve! Mit über 2,5 Millionen verkauften Exemplaren weltweit ist "City of Evil" nach wie vor eines der beliebtesten Alben von Avenged Sevenfold. Inklusive des Fan-Favoriten "Bat Country", der Single "Burn It Doen" und "The Wicked End". Avenged Sevenfold (abgekürzt A7X), die amerikanische Heavy-Metalcore-Band aus Huntington Beach, Kalifornien, wurde 1999 gegründet. Avenged Sevenfold sind bekannt für ihren variantenreichen Alternative Metal-Sound und ihre dramatischen, teils expliziten, Bilder auf Albumcovern und Merchandise-Artikeln. Auf ihrem Debütalbum "Sounding the Seventh Trumpet" entwickelte die Band einen Metalcore-Sound, den sie bis zu ihrem zweiten Album "Waking the Fallen" weitgehend beibehielt. Der Stil der Band hatte sich mit ihrem dritten Album und ihrer ersten Veröffentlichung bei einem Major-Label Warner, "City of Evil", zu einem traditionelleren Heavy-Metal-Stil entwickelt, der u.a. Bezug auf NWOBHW und Metallica nimmt. Nr. 63 auf der Liste der "100 Greatest Guitar Albums of All Time" des Guitar World Magazine. Kerrang! listet "City of Evil" sowohl bei "666 Albums You Need to Hear Before You Die" als auch in "50 Albums You Need to Hear Before You Die" sowie als Nr. 35 in "50 Greatest Metal Albums Ever". Rolling Stone nimmt das Album in seine Liste "The 100 Greatest Metal Albums of All Time" mit auf.

Während das musikalische Fundament die Einflüsse aus Nordamerikanischem Pop-Punk aufnimmt und zu einem eigenen Sound weiterentwickelt, stechen insbesondere die klare Haltung und tiefe persönliche Momente in den Texten heraus. Entstanden ist ein Punk/Rock Album, das nicht nach 20ern und Jugendbewegung klingt, sondern nach neuen Perspektiven, nach späten 30ern - menschlich und politisch. Seit Erscheinen des BLAUFUCHS Debüt-Albums vor rund 4 Jahren hat sich in der Welt viel verändert und wenig verbessert. Diese traurige Abwärtsspirale findet sich – mal drastisch und direkt, mal dezent akzentuiert – in allen Texten von „Bis jetzt ging alles gut“ wieder, das trotz Anflügen von Resignation auch stets einen Funken Hoffnung auf Besserung vermittelt. Blaufuchs betrachten nicht nur den gesellschaftlichen Wandel – sie sind selbst auch einer ständigen Veränderung ausgesetzt. Ihr zweites Album ist ein Stück weit auch ein Neubeginn mit einigen Neubesetzungen im Verlauf der letzten Monate. Hale Winter übernahm den Bass von Marisa, Jan Schlagowski das Schlagzeug von Alex Veth und mit Jan Jurat stieß ein weiterer Gitarrist zur Band. Den Blaufuchs Sound verändern die neuen Einflüsse nicht gravierend, die Drums werden ein Stück härter, die Gitarren etwas filigraner, aber die Handschrift von Hauptsongwriter John Hofmeister verbindet nach wie vor den amerikanischen Gesamtsound mit den deutschen Texten von Johannes König. Dennoch verzögerte sich die Entstehung des Albums durch die Umbesetzungen um mehrere Monate, was laut Johannes König auch nötig war: „Mir und John war extrem wichtig, dass auf dem Album auch Einflüsse unserer „Neuen“ zu hören sind, die uns live teilweise schon seit Jahren unterstützen.“ Aufgenommen wurde „Bis jetzt ging alles gut“ in den Limetree Studios in Ilsede und produziert von Sören Kucz und Gitarrist John Hofmeister. Mit „Fertig“ setzt die Platte einen extrem persönlichen Schlusspunkt und König wird hier deutlich direkter: „Den Druck, der mit der Verantwortung in der eigenen Familie, im Job und auch in der Band zusammenkommt, trifft im Alltag oft auf ein Männlichkeitsbild, in dem wider besseres Wissen versucht wird, Dinge alleine zu regeln.“

Das ist zwar nicht ganz gelungen, aber »Equal Rights« ist immer noch eines der einflussreichsten Reggae-Alben aller Zeiten.

Tosh war ein großer Verfechter der Menschenrechte und das spiegelt sich auch in der Tracklist wider. Natürlich gibt es eine Version von »Get Up, Stand Up«, die zusammen mit Bob Marley geschrieben wurde, aber »I Am That I Am«, »Downpressor Man« (eine Version von Sinnerman, die durch Nina Simone berühmt wurde), »Stepping Razor« und »Apartheid« wurden alle zu eigenständigen Menschenrechtshymnen. 1987 wurde Tosh bei einem Raubüberfall getötet und ließ Reggae-Fans auf der ganzen Welt mit der Frage zurück, was hätte sein können.

L.A.-based soul singer Leela James started out singing backup vocals on Hip-Hop albums in the late 90s and early 2000s. In 2004, she recorded the song "No Tears" on Pete Rock's "Soul Survivor 2", shortly after she signed a deal with Warner Bros Records and released her debut album A Change is Gonna Come, named after her cover of the Sam Cooke song. A true soul singer, with a voice comparable to Mavis Staples and Betty Wright, Leela enlisted Commissioner Gordon to oversee production, which included tracks by Kanye West, Raphael Saadiq, Wyclef Jean, and Chucky Thompson. The lead single, "Music," is an ode to the soul singers of yesterday, with a Hip-Hop feel. She performs a soulful R&B cover of No Doubt's "Don't Speak" and alternates between funky uplifting tracks like "Good Time" and "Soul Food" with downtempo, soulful ballads like "When You Love Somebody" and "My Joy." Leela James departed from Warner after the release of her debut and went on to release seven more studio albums. It's been twenty years since A Change is Gonna Come was released in June of 2005, and Get On Down is proud to present this underrated gem for the first time on vinyl. The album is pressed on "Golden Pearl" colored vinyl and packaged in a gatefold jacket, limited to 1000 copies. It's been a long time coming, but this is a must-have for neo-soul and R&B music lovers.

Slam make no mistake when it comes to the sonic tone of the album as it opens with the tribalistic Use It, Lose It before the discordant sounds of title track Dark Channel hints at the relentless nature of things to come. The intensity continues with Parametric Factor & Glide - both pushing a pulsating, synth driven trip; the later leading on a more traditional Slam percussive workout. The dance floor warping Morganatic pursues dark territory while Infinit Spaces adds trippy FX to an already animated synth hook. The beautifully crafted Kuture Version delves into a more immersive sound as more direct, chord driven elements take the lead. The pace quickens yet again with Ghost Dancer highlighting sub tones whilst still crafting ominous intonations with its modulating FX. Approaching the conclusion, the ferocious Beat On The Drum delivers a lesson in rhythm and energy before the contorted Irregular Object completes proceedings in a suitably hypnotic fashion.

Today, guitarist Mason Lindahl — whose “unabashedly beautiful" (Aquarium Drunkard) sound "balances the romantic dynamics of flamenco and the meticulousness of Windham Hill with the unguarded qualities of improvised music" (Pitchfork) — announces a pair of new albums: Joshua / Same Day Walking via Mt. Brings Death.

Though packaged together, Joshua and Same Day Walking chart distinct worlds. Recorded in northern California and produced by Robby Moncrieff (Dirty Projectors, Zach Hill), Joshua is woolier and warmer, evoking haze, humidity, and overgrown Spanish moss. Meanwhile, Same Day Walking — recorded in Iceland and produced by Moncrieff alongside two-time GRAMMY-winning composer / sound designer Sam Slater (Joker, Chernobyl) — is, appropriate for its icier climes, windswept and beholden to the vast emptiness of harsh landscapes. As a pair, they provide a thorough portrait of Lindahl's singular and versatile playing.

Amid Lindahl's purely evident virtuosity, close listeners can savor wonderful imperfections freckled throughout Joshua / Same Day Walking: buzzing strings, minimal electronic ambience, soft undulations of tempo. Lindahl isn’t here to pageant his craft; he's adventuring within, uncovering fresh avenues of sound and emotive gesture.

Described by friend and contemporary Hayden Pedigo as “the greatest living guitar player,” Mason Lindahl’s “austere, gothic flamenco...dares you to submit to this odd and immersive sonic universe" (Uncut). The Northern California native's solo instrumental debut Kissing Rosy in the Rain, released in 2021 via Tompkins Square, was praised as "gorgeous" (Petal Motel) and "a minimalist gem" (Everything Is Noise). Prior to that, his only other solo release is 2009's Serrated Man Sound.

The artistry of Midori Hirano lives in the resonance between sonic and visual worlds. Over her distinguished career the Berlin-based, Kyoto-born composer, pianist, and synthesist has crafted a distinctive voice straddling the spheres of classical music and harmonies with abstraction and invention. In addition to works under her own name, Hirano has released dynamic experiments under her MimiCof moniker as well as composed for film, television, art exhibitions and architectural expos. Hirano has also been a prolific collaborator, working with CoH, Brueder Selke, Nils Mosh, Teodor Wolgers, Ben Lukas Boysen & Paul Emmerich, SPECIMENS, Mami Sakurai, Atsuko Hatano, and more, contributing to dozens of releases. Hirano is acclaimed for crafting emotive works that stimulate all the senses with impressionism, or painting with sound. OTONOMA is the culmination of her work synthesizing these elements and highlights her acumen as a practiced and intuitive artist. The album infuses Hirano"s more classical sense of harmony on the piano with the endless textural possibilities of synthesizers.

Don Leisure has cemented his name as one of the most forward-thinking and experimental beatmakers & producers within the current musical ecosystem. A dedicated student of music, over the years, Don has amassed a vast encyclopaedic knowledge of music genres and subcultures, including a fascination with Welsh psychedelic folk music from the mid-20th century. This introduction was made by respected musician, producer & selector Andy Votel’s 2005 two-part compilation series ‘Welsh Rare Beat’ (in collaboration with Gruff Rhys and Don Thomas), comprising twenty-five tracks from Sain Records’ back catalogue. Now the oldest independent record label in Wales, Sain is a wildly influential bastion of home-grown Welsh talent, co-founded by Welsh-language folk singer Dafydd Iwan, whose music has seen a cultural resurgence in recent years with his 1983 song Yma o Hyd (We’re Still Here) becoming a huge anthem for Wales football fans. Set up in the Welsh capital, many of Sain’s early releases were recorded at Rockfield Studios in Monmouthshire, but in the early 1970s the record company moved to the Caernarfon area and opened their first recording studio in 1974 near Llandwrog. Announcing a huge digitisation project throughout 2024, Sain Records took on the mammoth task of painstakingly digitising their entire back catalogue spanning 55 years, working in partnership with the National Library of Wales the resulting archive then be submitted for to the National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth, preserving them for future generations to enjoy. Taking this period of rediscovery as an opportunity to reimagine their impressive inventory, Sain invited Don Leisure to dig into their musical treasure chest, creating a sprawling sonic tapestry from the dusty gems within. On this exhilarating excursion, Sain Records founder Dafydd Iwan explains: ‘Imagine someone gave you access to over 50 years of Welsh popular music – almost all of it unknown to you before. It would be a strange experience of discovery, an unknown territory which could baffle and excite. This happened to Jamal (Don Leisure) – and he was captivated by a world of music he barely knew existed, and when he was asked to distill the experience into one album, he immediately warmed to the idea. The resulting product is ‘Tyrchu Sain' (translating to ‘Digging Sain’), a fearless and exploratory album, which sees Don put his signature unparalleled and unpredictable skills to work, weaving together moments of forgotten beauty into celestial and otherworldly compositions. The record features appearances by artists from Wales who have a similar obsession as Don Leisure in these classic Welsh rarities including Gruff Rhys, Carwyn Ellis, Earl Jeffers Amanda Whiting and Boy Azooga. A shimmering patchwork quilt of sound, ‘Tychru Sain’ traverses a shifting landscape of acid folk, eerie vocal melodies and interstellar soundscapes, propelled forth by crisp, head nod-inducing drums and grainy textures. Breathing new life into compositions lost to time, and paving a path for new listeners to discover the magic that lies within.
