Die in Kyoto geborene und heute in Berlin lebende Midori Hirano schafft minimalistische, ätherische Musik, in der akustisches Klavier nahtlos mit elektronischen Texturen verschmilzt. In Anlehnung an Ryuichi Sakamotos spätere Werke (Async, 12) erforscht, dekonstruiert und erfindet Hirano den traditionellen Rahmen der klassischen Musik neu und verwandelt jede Klaviernote in eine introspektive und immersive Reise. Unter ihrem Pseudonym Mimicof produziert sie auch elektronischere, Ambient Techno/IDM-orientierte Werke. Es war daher fast unvermeidlich, dass Midori eines Tages mit Ivan Pavlov zusammentreffen würde. Der russische Künstler, der heute in Frankreich lebt, ist eine Schlüsselfigur der experimentellen elektronischen Musik der letzten 30 Jahre. Als ehemaliger Akustikingenieur der russischen Marine ist COH ein Freigeist mit chirurgischer Präzision. In den späten 1990er Jahren trat er mit avantgardistischem, präzisem Post-Techno hervor, bevor er sich mit Glitch beschäftigte und später akustische und Ambient-Sounds in seine Klangskulpturen einbaute. Seine frühere Zusammenarbeit mit Peter Christopherson (COIL), Cosey Fanni Tutti und Abul Mogard (COH Meets Abul Mogard) sowie Veröffentlichungen auf renommierten Labels wie Raster-Noton und Editions Mego unterstreichen sowohl seinen Einfluss auf die elektronische Avantgarde als auch seine bemerkenswerte Fähigkeit zur Kollaboration. Mit Sudden Fruit liefern COH und Midori Hirano ein immersives und chimärisches Werk ab. Inimitable poet, cultural theorist, author, 2020 MacArthur Fellow, Fred Moten creates new conceptual spaces that accommodate emergent forms of Black cultural production, aesthetics, and social life. Moten is a professor of performance studies and comparative literature at New York University concerned with social movement, aesthetic experiment, and Black study. He is also a United States Artists Rockefeller Fellow and was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Puerto Rican- American bassist Brandon Lopez is the son of a gravedigger who himself put time in doing the same, developing muscles that serve him well in his thorough command of the upright bass. On moving to NYC, Lopez made himself indispensable within numerous realms of creative music. As the Cleveland Review of Books noted, "This is virtuosity as vocabulary, a total command of texture, subtlety, and a depth that can be reached into."

Die in Naarm/Melbourne ansässige Rockband Floodlights kündigt ihr drittes Album 'Underneath' an, das am 21. März 2025 über PIAS Australia veröffentlicht wird.

'Underneath' entstand inmitten ausgedehnter Tourneen durch Großbritannien und Europa, Australien und den USA, und wurde von einer surrealen Phase im Leben der Bandmitglieder geprägt - voller Premieren, der Erkundung neuer Orte und den bisher größten Gigs und Festivals.

Trotz der Vergänglichkeit ihres neuen Lebens auf der Straße erwies sich der Schreibprozess als eine äußerst intime Zeit, die von ruhigen, gemeinsamen Momenten der Kontemplation geprägt war. Beatrice M's amusingly entitled Bait label has in fact become exactly that - very desirable to those who know. Its latest is a four tracker that serves as a taster of a forthcoming digital album by Trois-Quarts Taxi System. Behind the moniker is Eloi Petillon, a versatile producer, DJ and live act who has a knack for blurring genre lines. On this one, they mix up elements of dubstep, techno and d&b into soundscapes that are cerebral, hypnotic and psychedelic. Each one is made from futuristic sound design, field recordings and intricate polyrhythms: 'Metamorphism' warped, linear, deft and brilliant deep techno. 'Coma' is more busy, 'Fraction' has wispy synths and a sparse soundscape and 'Spectre' is a fizzy, skeletal sound that tickles the brain.

Kills Birds gehen mit einer Intensität an ihre Songs heran, die so greifbar ist wie keine andere junge amerikanische Rockband. Elori Saxl's soundtrack for the VR film Texada is an exploration of the smallness of human existence within the grand scope of geologic time, mirroring the film's exploration of Texada Island's limestone-rich landscape. Saxl, inspired by her own experiences of island life on Madeline Island, assembled a soundscape that captures both the vastness of Earth's ancient processes and the intimate moments of human existence. Using analog synthesizers, baritone saxophone (performed by Henry Solomon), and processed field recordings of water and rocks, she created ambient layers that evoke cycles, waves, and the transformative forces of nature. The score begins with an exploration of Earth's origins and the emptiness of a rocky planet before life emerged. This foundation grows into pieces like "The Quarry," where the central geological feature, limestone, takes on a dynamic presence. As loops and rumbling textures evoke the rise and movement of stone over millennia, as abstracted creatures spiral upwards, full of life. The album concludes with "The Most Special Place," which serves as a final bridge between the cosmic and the intimate, leaving a lasting impression of how deeply human lives are intertwined with the ancient geology beneath our feet. Saxl's compositional process itself mirrors the themes of transformation and cycles. Working with limited time and resources, she recorded Solomon's saxophone parts early in the project, later repurposing fragments through re-pitching, stretching, and digital effects. As she explains, "I experimented with bringing out the human character of the saxophone by highlighting breath and imperfections while also pushing it into an alien/unrecognizable/bigger world through digital processing and effects." The result is a soundtrack that feels both organic and otherworldly, capturing the grand scope of Earth's timeline while remaining grounded in human emotion and connection.

Far Out Recordings proudly presents a landmark discovery in Brazilian jazz: the long lost album by drumming pioneer Edison Machado. Recorded in New York City in early 1978 but never released, Edison Machado & Boa Nova captures a pivotal figure in Brazilian music history at the height of his artistic powers.

Combining North and South American jazz traditions with Machado's revolutionary samba innovations, Edison Machado & Boa Nova represents a triumph against the odds. After facing persecution under Brazil's military dictatorship and being forced to sell his drum kit in 1976, Machado found renewed creative purpose in New York with the Boa Nova ensemble. The resulting album captures the essence of his genius - sophisticated yet wild, controlled yet daring, leading an ensemble of some of the best jazz, samba and bossa nova players of the day.

At just fifteen years old, Machado revolutionized Brazilian music through an accident that would change everything - when his snare drum broke during a performance, he began playing samba rhythms on the cymbal. This innovation, known as "samba no prato" (samba on the cymbals), brought new layers of dynamism to samba and proved instrumental in the development of bossa nova alongside contemporaries like Antonio Carlos Jobim and João Gilberto.

A complex and passionate figure, Machado was notorious for his militant perfectionism and "attacking" style of drumming. Having spent some years of his youth in the Brazilian army, musicians often remarked that he played as if he were at war. But his innovative style, while exhibiting complete control and sophistication, somehow so often danced right on the edge of chaos and wild abandon.

After making his name in Rio's legendary Beco das Garrafas (Bottles Alley) in the 1950s and early '60s, Machado went on to form Bossa Três - the world's first instrumental bossa nova group. His influence spread internationally through collaborations with Stan Getz, Sergio Mendes, Antônio Carlos Jobim, Milton Nascimento, and Chet Baker, while his 1964 album Edison Machado É Samba Novo stands as a masterpiece of Brazilian jazz.

At 80 minutes in length, Edison Machado & Boa Nova, the lost 1978 New York sessions, is a singular achievement in Brazilian jazz. The format itself is a rarity in the canon. It’s packed full of exceptional technical precision and creative vitality, with sophisticated arrangements and masterful improvisation from its exceptional sextet of Brazilian and US musicians: Paulinho Trompete (flugelhorn/trumpet), Ion Muniz (tenor saxophone), Steve Sacks (baritone saxophone), Mozar Terra (piano), and Ricardo dos Santos (double bass).

The album features unheard compositions by Brazilian masters Dom Salvador (Salvador Trio, Harry Belafonte, Edu Lobo), Guilherme Vergueiro (Raul De Souza, Leon Ware, Joyce), Aloisio Aguiar (Arthur Verocai, Airto) amidst the plethora of captivating original material by the members of the Boa Nova ensemble.

Across eight tracks, Tilliander and Kajfes masterfully balance slow, lumbering machine pulses, delicate synth textures, and impeccable trumpet lines. Tilliander's use of both analog and digital synths carve out the structure of these sonic sculptures, while Kajfes's elegant trumpet playing pushes against them, infusing the dreamy soundscapes with both acoustic tension and melodic detail. Individually, Andreas Tilliander and Goran Kajfes have long been recognized as leading names in Swedish electronic music and jazz, respectively. Both have consistently pushed and transcended the boundaries of their genres. Tilliander has explored everything from techno, drones, and dub to clicks'n'cuts under monikers like TM404 and Mokira. Kajfes has been a relentless innovator in jazz, playing a central role in bands such as Oddjob, Subtropic Arkestra, Tropiques, Nacka Forum, and Fire! Orchestra. Now, they join forces, forging a new path for both ambient and jazz music.
