,BMB x OBI II" ist die Fortsetzung der super begehrten Zusammenarbeit zwischen Minnesotas Afro-Psych-Powerhouse Black Market Brass und dem jungen, visionären Talent Obi Original. Beide Seiten zeigen die rohe, hartnäckige Haltung, für die die beiden Künstler einzeln bekannt sind, mit einer Songauswahl, die ein breiteres Spektrum abdeckt als die erste Ausgabe. Obi Original zieht eine direkte Linie zwischen dem Godfather of Soul und dem Vater des Afrobeat und führt das raue 10-köpfige Ensemble auf eine Weise, die an die Bühne von Zaire '74 erinnert. Diese Tracks hauen rein, bleiben heavy und entschuldigen sich nicht dafür. Die A-Seite, ,If I Do My Own", ist Funk. Dieser Track ist schwer auf der Eins und zeigt Obis Bandleitung à la James Brown; wenn man ihn nur tanzen sehen könnte in der Gesangskabine. Ace’s small but ever-evolving “Black America Sings…” series has been quiet of late, but it springs back into action this month with the 2-LP and CD releases of “Highway Of Diamonds” – a second dip onto the catalogue of Bob Dylan, as reimagined by some of the foremost African-American artists of the 20th century.

From almost the start of his songwriting career, Dylan’s words and music have impacted on black American music, with ‘Blowin’ In The Wind’, speaking to an America that was still mostly segregated and becoming an anthem for all colours and creeds. As Dylan’s own career progressed, so did the number of covers he received, with a significant amount coming from what might be termed ‘non-traditional’ sources such as those heard here.

The 20 songs on “Highway Of Diamonds” continue the story that was told in part on the earlier “How Many Roads” compilation, with an almost entirely different selection of artists lending their voices to some of the best songwriting of the 20th century, and an almost entirely different selection of songs (with the exception of ‘Blowin’ In The Wind’ itself, which provides a common thread linking the story told across the two sets).
Big names from the worlds of soul, gospel and jazz, timeless songs and, for many, new ways of appreciating ever-durable material make “Highway Of Diamonds” as essential a purchase as its predecessor.

It’s been over 20 years since Kenny Dixon Jr., better known as Moodymann, released Black Mahogani—an album rich in atmosphere and emotion, offering a quintessential journey through deep house, soul, and jazz. Originally released in 2004, Black Mahogani is arguably one of Moodymann’s most revered and sought-after works. With the help of Detroit legends like the late Amp Fiddler, Roberta Sweed, and Norma Jean Bell, Dixon infused his analog soundscapes and samples with a new organic warmth—expanding the deep house genre while simultaneously paying homage to 1970s soul and cinematic soundtracks.

US ambient powerhouse and Past Inside the Present label head Zake is one of the most prolific producers in the game. He puts out new music more often than most of us put out wheelie bins. That doesn't stop him from revising what has come before, as he does here. Wash Away was made with Lucy Gooch and Black Brunswicker back in 2020 and now gets a series of subtle edits before being dropped on heavyweight wax. It is a mirage of vocal whispers, soft drones, and mindless (in a good way) musical daydreaming marbled with acoustic strings and backed with signature tape hiss. Yet another crucial work from Zake and co.
