‘ROSEBUD’ is the tenth album from Current Joys,
the solo project of Surf Curse drummer Nick
Rattigan - and his boldest reinvention yet.
Written during a difficult period and reworked
alongside producer never goodbye (Danny
Dwyer), the record transforms a set of strippedback slowcore songs into a maximalist collage of
nu metal, screamo, electronica, hip-hop, powerpop, emo and darkwave.
Big anthemic hooks shouted through layers of
static, punk chord progressions chewed up by
digital manipulation and moments of striking
tenderness underneath the noise.
It’s also a milestone: ‘ROSEBUD’ is the first album
Rattigan is self-releasing, via his own imprint They
Are Evil, after years on Secretly Canadian - a
return to the artistic freedom of his early
Bandcamp days.
