2London-based pianist, singer and composer Joy Ellis often cooks up wistful ambience to accompany her beautiful voice. Here she gives her jazz quartet a full orchestra on One Hundred Years, her first major orchestral project, and one written with Arts Council England support. She works with the Engines Orchestra, conducted by Phil Meadows, alongside drummer Adam Osmianski, guitarist Mike De Souza and bassist Jonny Wickham across seven tracks that run from the lush 'My Usual Walk' and 'Tethered' through to the cosy "The Back Room at Ronnie's". Intimate jazz is laced with large-scale strings and wind, and means the album feels close and big at the same time, somewhere between a chamber setting and a concert hall.
