10"Synth revival from the mid-aughts gave us fractured sub-genre upon fractured sub-genre, outlets for noise-leaning basement dwellers to finally dance like dad said they couldn’t, and commercially-viable nostalgia drivel that eventually poisoned the well. Luckily, for all of us, Ryan Martin and his sincerity cut through all of it.
Secret Boyfriend, the monumental and ongoing undertaking of Martin, has spanned labels, media, and DIY line-ups for more than a decade. Whenever Ryan comes up in conversation I am sure to bring up his home in North Carolina and how it is a testament to his commitment to media and artistic ethos having a place in the world. The walls and rooms are thoroughly covered in drawings, flyer ideas, cassette collections, VHS in heaps and piles, instruments that seem like they are still warm as if they were just played then sat down. Martin and his home act as a means to unbridled expression without the need to fill a gap in a mostly saturated world.
