Traversing with an understated technical assuredness, the ambitious shapes of Steely Dan, the popping lounge funk of McDonald era Doobie Brothers, the sweet mourning of the Stylistics and Delfonics, and the exquisite song-craft and flawless harmonising of CSNY, Daniel Collas (The Phenomenal Handclap Band), Bart Davenport and Quinn Luke aka Bing Ji Ling have recorded an absolute darling of an album under the name Incarnations. They are three friends with enough musical guises, side-projects, collaborations and production jobs to fill the annual itinerary of your average musician twice over. When three CVs like these get together on a regular basis, it's only logical they speculate and hypothecate on the possibility of an album together. But, how to make those congested diaries synchronise? Bart lives in Oakland and Quinn and Daniel are in New York, all three of them are on tour for the better part of the year. One sunny day in Madrid, Spain, a plan was hatched and a proposal was made. Lovemonk, a small, eclectic and affable Spanish label, dangled the carrot that clinched the deal; 'find two weeks between gigs/productions/recordings and head down to this little place we know in Tarifa, Southern Spain'. A family-run studio, in a house 5 minutes from a wild beach and a short ferry ride from the coast of Africa; the perfect ambience for the fleeting melody and sultry grooves of the Incarnations debut album, "With All Due Respect". Arriving with bits and bobs of half-songs, grooves and melodies, Daniel, Quinn and Bart, sketched and improvised their way to the most intensely evocative songs you'll hear this year. Punctuated by a day trip across the water to Tangiers, all 9 songs were written and recorded inside a fortnight in October 2009 and laid to rest while our protagonists jetted off to their respective diary appointments. Whether it was the beach, the soft weather, the fact that you can smell Africa from the studio, the home cooked Spanish food or the relaxed environment of the recording room, when the band returned to the songs at a New York studio earlier this year, they found an album as fresh and resonant as the moment it came into being. Quickly mixed down with no over-dubs or re-records, "With All Due Respect" captures the combined gifts of Tarifa and the three very talented friends that paid a visit. Incarnations are: Daniel Collas: DJ, drummer, organist, and one half of production team Embassy Sound Productions, the minds behind The Phenomenal Handclap Band. Bart Davenport: Collaborator with Greyboy, General Elektriks and The Phenomenal Handclap Band; Singer-songwriter with The Loved Ones, The Kinetics and Honeycut, and most recently a touring member of the Kings Of Convenience. Plays - guitars, keyboards, vocals The band are named after Encarnacion "Nini" Sagrista, owner of the recording studio in Tarifa, who housed and fed them during their stay.

After her much lauded debut 'Playin' Me' last year, Cooly G returns with an EP that switches from songwriting mode to create extended, spaced out and rhythmic house tracks built for the dancefloor. 'Hold Me' starts with minor note stabs and Cooly's vocal refrain 'Hold me' over a punchy bassline. The rhythm slowly builds as the vocal becomes more dubbed out and the atmosphere more smokey. 'Oi Dirty', made with DVA, is a piece of wonky, rhythmically lopsided house with a cavernous elasticized bassline and lots of micro detail destabilising the track then bringing it back, pitching drums and mini breakdowns. 'Molly' is a slow burning 4/4 house track built around a static grid that gradually builds up, getting stiffer and more intense, with wobbly acid-like synth lines and hissing static stabs, underpinned by a one note bass kick. It's a masterclass in creating tension with sleight of hand production moves.

Magic sometimes happens with the wonders of the internet and digital age of the music industry. Lost Again is a great example of just that.The project started in Baltimore by Lomez and the singer Symbol. Then travelled to Florida to get the touch of Atnarko and ended up in Noir's hands (and studio) in Denmark before the beautiful song reached it's end result.
The package comes with a Raw Club Cut aimed for the tech house floors, a James Welsh (Hypercolour, Join The Dots) Remix for the UK beats and bass approach and a deeper 303 led techno journey done by German Patrick Chardronnet (Connaisseur, Poker Flat).

It's always a treat here at Circus Company to be able to shed the light on a lesser known talent. After all, it's a philosophy we have built the label on, but there's no denying we need to have that personal connection with the artists whose music we release. In the case of San Francisco act Moniker, our own dear Dave Aju has a previous history with Kenneth Scott from the duo, having lent some vocals to his 2009 jam 'What Do I Do' So it is that we come to release this, the first fully fledged vinyl offering from Scott and his studio partner Emilio Orlandi after years spent treating Californian crowds to their live, hardware-driven sound. The machines definitely rule the roost in the world of Moniker, but unlike so much of the current obsession with analogue noise and the lo-fi aesthetic, Scott and Orlandi instead coax heartfelt emotion and hand-crafted grooves from an array of beat boxes and synthesisers without making any self-conscious moves to demonstrate how .undigita' they are. Instead, the music takes priority, coming forth in soothing waves of harmonious chords, captivating leads and understated drums that speak volumes for simplicity and soul within deep house. The live aspect of Moniker's mission undoubtedly shines through, manifesting itself in smart switch-ups and breakdowns, impulsive edits and subtle variations that can only result from an on-the-fly jam. Mainly though, this is an exercise in satisfaction, speaking to the same pleasure neurons that would have been tickled the first time you heard Metro Area. In keeping with the warm tones of the original material, Patrice Scott makes for a thoroughly welcome addition to the fold.

In the 1970s the American composer Henry Flynt started a series of pieces under the title - New American Ethnic Music'. In so doing he worked together native styles of music such as blues, Country or Hillbilly with electronic production methods to make something altogether new. So far in Germany it has never been attempted to rework folklore electronically for a compilation. However, this picture changes if one redefines the idea of who the population is. Incomers have brought new - national anthems' to Germany, which means: even the Portuguese Fado, the African Gnawa, the Croatian Klapa or the Vietnamese Quan ho are these days at home in Germany.
With the cultural project - Heimatlieder aus Deutschland' ('Native songs from Germany') founded by former Spex editor Mark Terkessidis and label manager Jochen Kühling all the various styles of traditional folk music now found in Germany has been collected. Thirteen of the songs recorded for the project have now been transformed by contemporary electronic producers to present a - New German Ethnic Music'. But why remixes For one thing electronic music has recently focused a lot on the past (Ghost Music, Hypnagogic Pop etc.) - electronic editing is well suited to follow the effects of the immigrant music which the - imaginary national anthems' has created. Furthermore the project's instigators were curious how - electronic musicians' would handle folk music and folk songs which is a hugely difficult task. To this end artists were sought out who could get along with the idea of each music style and who are known to already have experimented with the human voice. The results are as varied as the music styles and Djs involved. Some melodies remain completely intact while others are abstracted beyond recognition.
Margaret Dygas' associative approach ensured that she presents a polish song about a girls arranged marriage with a claustrophobic feeling. With his remix of the Marrabenta of Mozambique Mark Ernestus has continued the rhythmic experiments he is known for with Jeri Jeri. Thomas Mahmoud translated Gnawa into dub and finally Ulrich Schnauss turned the song of the Italian Chorus of - Donni So' into a hymn for the horizon-expanding power of migration.
Hopefully this compilation will also expand some horizons.

After a superlative EP from Chicago's DJ Rahaan, Dublin's Fatty Fatty Phonographics is back with another installment of Pablo and Shoey's 'Rejigs', which have had support from the likes of Hot Toddy, Bicep, Get Down Edits, Leftside Wobble, House of Disco and Rub'N'Tug.

'No Good (Start The Jack) sees them take on Kelly Charles' 'You're No Good', a late 80's New Jersey house bomb and source of the infamous vocal hook from The Prodigy's 'No Good (Start The Dance). After one of the great 80's dance music clichés - an intro where some sassy mama gives her boyfriend shit down an old school telephone line - they go straight for the jugular with that big big hook, spinning the whole thing out for 10 minutes with lots of hypnotic piano loops and large chunks of the great song at the heart of it all. This is one that the crowd will be immediately singing right back at ya at 2am!

'Gonna Get Ya', meanwhile, goes for some Greg Wilson 'Edit The Edit' style shenanigans, taking on Barna Soundmachine's sly, slinky funk loops. The Barna man's original had a whole heap of Diana Ross' vocals from 'I'm Gonna Make You Love Me' at the centre but never let rip with the big hands in the air chorus. The lads have rearranged it here so it's alot less teasin' and alot more ease-in!

The 3rd track is as important to Pablo and Shoey as it is to Moodymann, so 'Funky Rump (Tribute To MCA)' pays tribute to the sadly deceased Beastie Boy by looping up some busy jazz drums from 'Paul's Boutique' and splicing it with a very fitting in concert tribute from the one and only Flava Flav of Public Enemy. The full track, when it eventually arrives, is a relentless clav funk monster that just keeps going and going....

Label boss Daniel Solar returns with a new EP and some helping hands from Stee Downes on the mic, Florian Kruse & Nils Nuernberg with the mixer and Berlin homie Mario Aureo on the composition.

The tracks are ranging from disco to house, from mild to wild and should keep the audience from start to finish.

After a string of releases on Drumcode Records, Pets Recordings and Hypercolour, Tom Demac has joined forces with Will Samson in a somewhat unlikely pairing for their debut release via AUS. Following on from AUS's celebratory 50th release from Deetron, a surprise re-release of Sei A and another solid EP from Dusky, this release takes the label along a more expansive and less dance floor orientated route. In 2012 Tom Demac established himself as one of the UK's most exciting producers after widespread acclaim for 'Critical Distance Part 2'. He followed up this success in New Release Information 2013 with collaborations and remixes with Glimpse such as 'L-Plates'. On the other hand Will had been touring indie venues with Kurt Vile, Marissa Nadler, Shearwater, Ólafur Arnalds off the back of his newly released LP, 'Balance' - an album of hazy, ambient & intimate tape recordings At the end of 2012 Tom stumbled across Will's album, although on opposite sides of the musical spectrum, the two shared a similar ethos towards their work - passionately creating, but never taking themselves too seriously. Having both experienced the recent and sudden loss of close family members just a few short months apart from each other, it was clear that there were both in need of a cathartic outlet. 'It Grows Again' and 'Chasing Shadows' reflects these experiences with a striking blend of wistful vocals and ambient guitar swells from Will Samson and Tom's distinctive grumbling and weighty bass lines. The final track on the EP is Tom's formula remix which seeks a more 4 to the floor approach, led by punchy beats and groove rather than intricate vocals. Tom Demac will be complementing the build up to the release by playing gigs and live shows across the Netherlands, Germany, Ibiza and the UK.

Once upon a time...in the midst of masked identities, artist pseudonyms and the like, Midnight Shift introduces a creature not even of human form.

Tapirus conjures music reflecting the duality of his soul. On one hand, rough and acidic to tell of the terrain of his past. And on the other, pure ethereal sounds borne of another place. This EP, showcasing 3 songs of the Tapirus alongside a remix by label artist Basic Soul Unit, is just the introduction to his tale.

The wiggly 'Acid Love Story' enters the room with its tight drum programming and infectious bassline commanding attention. A voice speaks of a love lost: 'She left...she left. Dark time ahead. Dark times in my head.' But perhaps the story is not yet over.

'Trying to Make Something of Life' continues the monologue, conveying an acidic almost bitter experience. Freaked out and haunting, this track is literally inspired by the dead. It lays as atribute to losing yet another close companion in life.

On the flipside, 'To Live in the Hearts...' and its remix comes through. Ascending the scales of life, its Asianic influence and soaring chords take one beyond the clouds. Basic Soul Unit's transforms the track helter-skelter, a frantic pace turning the peaceful tune into beautiful art of war.

Featuring all-new material and recorded in the band's isolated studio on the edge of the Essex marshes, the album ebbs and flows in mood like the nearby Blackwater estuary. Working with a palette of vintage drum machines, analogue synths, textural samples, acoustic recordings, electric bass & heavily treated guitar, the songs were born out of captured live studio performances. Cooper & Hammond then rewired their initial sketches through a series of hands-on, lo-fi effects chains, blurring the edges between acoustic & electronic elements. The result is an organic, playful feel; leaving the music room to breathe and carrying distinct echoes of the band's previous work. BIOGRAPHY Ultramarine are the London/Essex-based duo of Ian Cooper & Paul Hammond. Formed in 1989, the band's early records were released by the seminal Belgian label Les Disques du Crépuscule. Ultramarine released five albums during the 1990s including the highly-acclaimed ambient techno/house classic Every Man And Woman Is A Star (Rough Trade, 1992); United Kingdoms (Blanco Y Negro, 1993), featuring writing collaborations with Robert Wyatt; and Bel Air (Blanco Y Negro, 1995). After a prolific decade, including full American and European tours with Björk and Orbital, Ultramarine went on a long sabbatical following the release of their fifth album A User's Guide (New Electronica, 1998). After a 13-year absence they resurfaced with two new singles in late 2011 on Real Soon and WNCL Recordings, fully rested and ready for action.

It's only early July, but 2013 has already proven to be a landmark year for production/DJ duo Deep'a & Biri. With a couple of their tracks being released on Transmat Records and appearing on Derrick May's mix compilations on the one hand, while on the other, getting signed to DJ Hell's International DJ Gigolo Records, where they released a single in April and have a full album forthcoming mid-September - it seems that all corners of the techno diaspora are ready to catch up on their sound. But it doesn't stop there, as they now launch their own Tel-Aviv based label, Black Crow. With a successful series of parties operating under the same name, bringing to Tel-Aviv a tasteful selection of the world's top class techno DJ's and live acts, Black Crow, the label, is set to counter-match this high standard with its musical output. Inaugurating the label is the imminent release of 'Redshift", produced in collaboration with their long-time partner and excellent producer on his own right, Gene. 'Redshift' has the signature Deep'a & Biri sound, a pumping Detroit-indebted roller, with shout snippets riding in & out the keys-led workout. Keeping it in the Mediterranean, Greek producer Argy provides the remix, accenting the baseline and adding a spoken vocal that takes 'Redshift' all the way to Chicago. Rounding off the package is 'Blueshift", which demonstrates the team's melodic tendencies, with its more spatial arrangement perfect for those deep space moments.

Vinyl Exclusive Version Vidis brought us a handful of hidden gems last year. A selection showcasing the under-estimated and often overlooked Lithuanian House scene. Short info: You're going to feel relaxed and ready for summer after listening to fenou #19. On this 2-tracker the Swiss guy Benotmane skillfully combines groovy basslines, melodic synths and carefully adjusted vocal parts. - Somewhere' is one of these tracks that carry you out in the morning sun. Later on when you listen again a melody snippet triggers memories of a perfect moment. The B-side is certainly no less exciting. Although the mood of - Submarine' is more quiet, almost dreamier. Eyes closed, you'll get wrapped in the sounds just to slowly drift away. As usual the 10 vinyl release is again a limited edition and numbered by hand.
