Exit Records expands on dBridge' sophomore album A Love I Can't Explain with two new interpretations by The Fear Ratio (James Ruskin & Mark Broom) and Kahn. In keeping with the label's ethos the artists were left alone to deliver remixes without any stylistic requests and as a result we have two tracks that are personal & uncompromising.

dBridge has been a firm supporter of both Kahn and TFR so it's very fitting that Exit Records releases TFR's debut remix and Kahn's rework, which repurposes what you thought you knew about him as an artist. The ALICE remixes are another leap forward for Exit Records.

“It felt like it had been such a long time since I'd released anything that felt aligned with that sound I was exploring back in the early days of the Kahn project, and whilst I naturally wanted to bring something contemporary to the table with this record it was nice to allow myself to fall back into that older version of my musical identity. My past life, if you like.” Kahn

WE JAZZ
Books02.02.202402.FEB.24

We Jazz launches a new magazine bringing together contributors from such sources as Pitchfork, WIRE, Downbeat, The Quietus, Jazzwise, Deutschlandfunk Kultur, etc. Altering its title according to each issue's lead story, the first 128-page edition of the publication is entitled "World Galaxy" in connection to the cover story about Alice Coltrane written by US author Ashley Kahn. Other writers for the first issue include Phil Freeman, Debra Richards, Stewart Smith, Daniel Spicer, Peter Margasak, Andreas Müller, Matti Nives, Christian Adofo, Samy Ben Redjeb, 4AD's US Label Manager Nabil Ayers, plus more.

Topics in addition to the Alice Coltrane lead in include Sun Ra in Egypt, Scatter label profile, John Corbett, vinyl production in 2021, free jazz hero Alan Braufman, Finnish guitarist Raoul Björkenheim's jazz photos from 1976-77, a collection of European modern jazz posters, Oiro Pena, records / books / design, etc.

"We wanted to create a quality magazine with top content and a very organic feeling," says the magazine's co-editor and AD / graphic designer Matti Nives. "To us that means inviting some of our favourite writers to come up with ideas about topics they would like to cover, and linking up with great local illustrators and photographers. We hope that the end result would differ from other prints out there and provide fresh ideas in relation to the music we love."

Going forward, the English-language We Jazz Magazine is planned to be published twice a year.

Bristol-based producer and DJ 'Drone' present his album on 1985 Music. This 13-track long play, like his previous releases, continues to push the boundaries of underground dance and grime while retaining a sub-heavy, 808-laden coherence within his productions and selections, as anyone who has caught one of his sets can attest to.Since his first release on the imprint in 2020, Drone and his productions have grown from strength to strength. His debut EP ‘Evil Sky’ in 2021 received critical acclaim and support from all the leading figures in underground dance. His production work blurs the boundaries of trap, grime, and dubstep while enjoying support from the likes of Mala, V.I.V.E.K, and Kahn, it seems Drone’s inimitable sounds are becoming favoured by both scene stalwarts and club-goers: an admiration which looks set to grow as he continues to produce thoughtful and original music that promises a reaction in the club. ‘All I Know’ feat. Nottingham’s rising star Snowy kicks off the campaign and is a track that dominated the 2022 festival season. Calling on fellow production friends, this album also sees collaborations with label head honcho Alix Perez, Notion, Hyroglifics, and Deft. Kicking off 2023, Drone undertakes his first North American tour with a month of back-to-back performances and showcases of his new music ahead of release. He returns to the UK with a very special album launch party in his hometown Bristol before taking the party to the capital in early March.

Scott Monteith - Qawwali Quatsch

BeatsAmbientChill-Out

Field Records is proud to present a new experimental mini album from Scott Monteith aka Deadbeat that touches on the traditional music of Qawwali. Entitled Qawwali Quatsch, it feature lots of transcendental sounds and hypnotic violins and voices across eight tracks. This absorbing album came about after Monteith--best known for his dub techno--attended the 2015 Wasser Musik festival in Berlin, which featured music from both the coastal and land locked regions of India and Pakistan. One performer was Asif Ali Kahn and his "Qawwali party," as Qawwali bands are appropriately known, and his show really struck a chord. The resulting music (which the artist admits is just a humble experiment galaxies away from the real power of the source material that inspired it) makes up this first album under his own name, and is a sympathetically infused album that ably captures the spirit of the revelatory, life changing music that is Qawwali, and an entry quite unlike any other in his now vast catalog. Collaborator and longtime friend Sophie Trudeau of Godspeed You Black Emperor! was involved for additional violin and voice treatments.
