"To kick off the yearlong celebration and provide the perfect summer soundtrack, Capitol Records and UMe will release a newly remastered and expanded edition of The Beach Boys career-spanning greatest hits collection, Sounds Of Summer: The Very Best Of The Beach Boys, on June 17. Originally released in 2003, the album soared to no. 16 in the US and stayed on the chart for 104 weeks. Now certified 4x platinum for sales of nearly four and a half million albums, the collection has been updated in both number of songs and audio quality, expanding the original 30-track best of with 50 more of the band’s most beloved songs for a total of 80 tracks that span their earliest hits to deeper fan-favorite cuts and from their 1962 debut album, Surfin’ Safari through to 1989’s Still Cruisin’.
Assembled by Mark Linett and Alan Boyd, the team behind 2013's GRAMMY® Award-winning SMiLE Sessions and last year’s acclaimed boxed set, Feel Flows – The Sunflower and Surf's Up Sessions 1969-1971, Sounds Of Summer features nearly every US Top 40 hit of The Beach Boys’ incredible career, including “California Girls,” “I Get Around,” “Surfer Girl,” “Surfin’ U.S.A.,” “Fun, Fun, Fun,” “God Only Knows,” “Good Vibrations,” “Be True To Your School,” “Wouldn’t It Be Nice,” “Kokomo,” “Barbara Ann,” “Help Me, Rhonda,” “In My Room,” and many others. Fifty additional tracks showcase a broad mix of songs from across their wide-ranging catalog with some of the many highlights including “All Summer Long,” “Disney Girls,” “Forever,” “Feel Flows,” “Friends,” “Roll Plymouth Rock,” “Sail on Sailor,” “Surf’s Up,” and “Wind Chimes.”
The collection boasts 24 new mixes including two first-time stereo mixes, plus 22 new-and-improved stereo mixes, which in some cases feature the latest in digital stereo extraction technology, allowing for the team to separate the original mono backing tracks for the first time.
The expanded edition of Sounds Of Summer will be available in a variety of formats, including a 3CD softpack, and as a Super Deluxe Edition 6LP vinyl boxed set on 180-gram black vinyl in two options – a standard set or a numbered, limited edition version featuring a rainbow foil slipcase and four collectible lithographs. Both versions will feature color printed sleeves that replicate the original “Capitol Catalog” sleeves that highlight the entire Beach Boys discography, and all formats will include a booklet with new liner notes and updated photos. The original 30-track version will also be available in its newly remastered and upgraded form on single CD or double gatefold LP on standard weight vinyl or as a higher-end limited edition numbered version pressed on 180-gram vinyl with a tip-on jacket and a lithograph. Black Truffle is pleased to welcome free jazz legend Joe McPhee back to the fold with Oblique Strategies, a wild trio recorded in Antwerp in 2018 in the company of Mette Rasmussen’s fire-breathing alto saxophone and Dennis Tyfus’s post-Fluxus antics on tape, voice, and percussion. Rasmussen and Tyfus have previously recorded together as Bazuinschal, and some similar strategies are on display here: mysterious metallic scrapes, extended tones in which voice and sax become indistinguishable, comic explosions of varispeed tape. With McPhee on board, however, proceedings are more sumptuous, with the two horns moving fluidly from expeditions into the extremes of their instruments’ registers to pointillistic note-splatter and Ayler-esque folk melodies; we even get to bask in some of the slow-motion free blues that McPhee has now been playing for half a century. McPhee is heard primarily on tenor, Rasmussen mainly on alto, but with Rasmussen doubling on sundry objects, and the whole trio contributing vocals, certainty about who is doing what becomes nigh impossible.

The recording and production add to this hazy unclarity. Where much contemporary improvised music aims at dryly clinical hi-fi, the lively reverberant space of Oblique Strategies calls to mind the less-than-pristine sonics of classic free jazz artefacts like John Tchicai’s Afrodisiaca or McPhee’s own Underground Railroad. A further dimension of oblique unpredictability is added by subtle changes in the sense of space: at times merely a reverb tail glimpsed between phrases, at other points the whole mix seems to be momentarily swallowed up in slap-back, blurring the lines between acoustic instruments and the decayed fidelity of Tyfus’ tape playback. Spread across four pieces ranging from four to nineteen minutes in length, Oblique Strategies moves with anarchic swagger from explosions of clattering cymbals and bellowing horns to near-silent episodes of mysterious rumble and clunk. ‘Death or Dinner?’ opens the record with a lovely duet of climbing melodic patterns shared between the two saxophones, played with a buzzing oboe-like tone. A long, wavering note sung by Tyfus cues the first of countless changes of direction, eventually leading to a crescendo of watery splutters and duelling saxes. At points Tyfus’ keening resemble the signature moves of his friend and collaborator, Ghédelia Tazartès; at others, his tape-sped huffs and puffs possess a rawness reminiscent of Henri Chopin or Gil Wolman. The dialogue between wailing saxophones and vocal cries, punctuated by percussive thuds and crashes, can at times feel less like a musical performance and more like the calls of some mysterious forest creatures, possessing a primordial energy that might remind some listeners of the outdoor antics of Brötzmann and Bennink’s Schwarzwaldfahrt.

Oblique Strategies can also be delicate at times, as on the beautiful third piece, ‘Destilled Edible’, dominated by a slow, microtonal melody played with a breathy tone resembling a shakuhachi. The closing side-long ‘Light My Fire’ ranges across classic improv call and response, skittering trumpet blurts, inept cymbal clatter, mock-operatic vocals, and crude tape manoeuvres. Momentarily pausing at the ten-minute mark for an interlude of ghostly room sound and crackling texture, its closing moments unfurl a glorious dual saxophone finale, the almost epic tone subtly undermined by Tyfus quietly tapping out swing rhythms. Arriving in a striking sleeve adorned with Tyfus’ drawings, Oblique Strategies is an invigoratingly free-spirited blast of improvisation.

Edna Wright's idiosyncratic "Oops!" is one of the most sublime vocal refrains in soul music history. Anchoring its host album's leadoff cut, it sets the tone for a uniquely satisfying modern soul LP. Indeed, whilst many of its ilk come laden with filler, Wright's one solo record is an exercise in elegant restraint, a concise killer.

Originally released in 1977 on RCA, this rare and sought-after album followed the 1973 disbanding of Edna's much-loved Honey Cone. Produced by her husband, legendary producer/songwriter Greg Perry, the album was somewhat of a risk, a deep soul album released during the period when disco was altering the landscape of popular music. And perhaps inevitably, despite the stellar production and spine-tingling vocals throughout, the album glided gracefully under the radar, spawning only one single and seeing no chart action.

That single - the magnificent title-track - soon became a notorious rare groove stepper in its own right. However, in the years since, it has become a crate diggers classic. Its fame was elevated among hip-hop heads when Prince Paul memorably looped the shimmering intro when crafting the melodic hook for De La Soul's late-summer-stunner "Pass The Plugs", a wistfully melancholic back-porch nostalgia trip. And, more recently, Leon Vynehall liberally lifted the same intro for his sepia-tinged "Midnight On Rainbow Road" to augment the excellent Rush Hour compilation Musik For Autobahns 2.

Yet this album is so much more than its most famous song. An assuredly lean masterpiece from start-to-finish, the album features a further six dynamite tracks of warm, smooth soul. As such, it's an impossible task to choose certain tracks to highlight alongside the mighty title track. Throughout, Edna's strikingly mature vocals are wonderful, proudly stepping out with a sophisticated groove reminiscent of Jean Carn or Gloria Scott, whilst Greg Perry's gorgeous string-drenched backdrops add a rich depth. So much so, many of the other tracks have been sampled by producers with impeccable taste, from 9th Wonder to The Alchemist for songs featuring Nas and Talib Kweli.

Following her glowing role in the acclaimed documentary 20 Feet From Stardom, we pray this long overdue reissue will allow further light to shine on Edna. Officially licensed and beautifully remastered for vinyl by celebrated engineer Simon Francis, it has been pressed on audiophile 180g vinyl for the first time and features the original iconic artwork. Each copy includes a printed inner sleeve with a sumptuous black & white photo, full lyrics and heartfelt notes from Edna herself.

Zu großer Bekanntheit führte das nicht, Simon Joyner bleibt ein outsider mit seinem Loner-folk, aber für die, die ihn entdecken bietet er ein Kraft von rauher Schönheit. Conor Obers von Bright Eyes nennt Joyner, der seit 1990 seine dunklen Americana Songs veröffentlicht, einen entscheidenden Einfluß. Simon Joyner's neuestes Album gerät noch dunkler und eindringlicher. Sein Thema hier ist Isolation, und er übernimmt es gleich auch als Grundlage für seine Produktion. Ihm war es wichtig, dass die beteiligten Musiker allesamt alleine waren um ihre jeweiligen Parts zu finden. Die Abgeschiedenheit der einzelnen Musiker auf Songs From A Stolen Guitar bietet somit weniger Spontaneität vieler früherer Arbeiten von Joyner, führt aber zu einer Art Silberstreifeneffekt: Joyners Songs, die hier sorgfältiger und vielleicht absichtsvoller produziert wurden als auf jedem seiner früheren Alben, kommen viel klarer durch und stellen sowohl seine schillernden Wortspiele als auch seine klare Vision in den Vordergrund. Ein Kritiker bringt einen Vergleich zu Neil Young und meinte "Wenn (sein 2012 Album) 'Ghosts' sein 'Tonight's the Night' war - zornig, nackt und bodenlos - dann könnte sich 'Songs From A Stolen Guitar' als sein Harvest erweisen." Songs From A Stolen Guitar wurde in verschiedenen Städten aufgenommen. Joyner nahm seinen Gesang und seine Gitarre live in Omaha auf; Bassist Wil Hendrix fügte seine Parts zu Hause in San Francisco hinzu, Michael Krassner nahm seine Gitarren- und Klavier-Overdubs zu Hause in Phoenix auf, und Schlagzeuger/Percussionist Ryan Jewell nahm in Colorado auf. Das Zusammenspiel ist einfühlsam und kohärent, auch wenn es aus geografischer Entfernung und Abgeschiedenheit zusammengefügt wurde und oft wie Musik klingt, die durch den Nebel eines Herbstmorgens gefiltert wurde. Doch wenn es um Simon Joyner-Platten geht, zahlt man sein Ticket, um großartige Songs zu hören, und auch in dieser Kategorie enttäuscht Songs From A Stolen Guitar nicht. Eins der seltenen Alben, das nach dem klingt, worum es geht: die Kluft zwischen Einsamkeit und Alleinsein, die Grenzen zwischen Liebe und Hingabe, der Unterschied zwischen dem Tornado und dem, was er hinterlässt.

De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest may have been more commercially successful, but the afrocentric, jazz political rap movement and unfadeable Native Tounge Massive started with the Jungle Brothers. Their debut full length “Straight Out the Jungle” opened up many doors that are walked through by today’s artists like Mos Def, Common and even Kanye West. Their taste for jazzy horn samples helped kick-start the entire jazz-rap movement, and their James Brown fixation was one of the first. Plus, the group’s groundbreaking collaboration with legendary house producer Todd Terry, “I’ll House You,” paved the way for numerous hip-house hybrids that shot up the dance and pop charts over the next few years and appeared to be a staple on every East Coast Rap Album from ‘88 until ‘92. The opening track “Straight Out the Jungle” samples the classic Bill Withers drum break as the JB’s tell you where they are coming from. “Black Is Black” (featuring a young Q-Tip) and “Sounds Of The Safari” introduces the pro-black edge, while the sexually subtle classics “Jimbrowski” and “I’m Gonna Do You” are funny, clever and timely. Hard, smart, fun, clever and brilliant, Mike G., Africa Baby Bam and Sammy G may not have realized it but they crafted a classic rap album that stands the test of time. Featuring the singles "Desire Lines" and "Hypocrite", Split is the second full studio album by Lush. Produced by Mike Hedges - famed for his work on The Cure"s Seventeen Seconds & Siouxsie and the Banshees"s A Kiss in the Dreamhouse - and mixed by Alan Moulder, Split sees the band hit a poppier sound whilst retaining their almost pitch-black feel.

Svart Records presents a very limited vinyl edition of Kivimetsän Druidi's two full length albums. Never before available on vinyl, Shadowheart (2008) and Betrayal, Justice, Revenge (2010) are limited to 400 copies on pitch black vinyl. Newly remastered for vinyl, both come with spectacular 12 inch booklets. Kivimetsän Druidi (The Druid Of The Stone Forest) play metal that is both adventurously original and filled with elements that sound familiar. Part of the Finnish folk metal movement, which also spawned bands like Korpiklaani and Turisas, Kivimetsän Druidi's music stems from a similar origin but is more complex and symphonic. Their two albums to date were released by Century Media and are now being made available on limited vinyl courtesy of Svart Records.

This comes for the first time on 180g vinyl in a gatefold sleeve. Re-mastered for vinyl.This 22 track compilation spans the years 1995 - 2004 featuring key tracks from all their albums as well and live recordings and many unreleased tracks.BJM has been essential in the development of the modern U.S. garage scene, and many LA and SF musicians got their start playing with Newcombe, including Peter Hayes of The Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. Originally Newcombe was heavily influenced by The Rolling Stones' psychedelic phase - the name comes from Stones guitarist Brian Jones combined with a reference to cult leader Jim Jones, but his work in the 2000s has expanded into aesthetic dimensions approximating the UK Shoegazing genre of the 1990s and incorporating influences from world music, especially Middle Eastern and Brazilian music.

The Hampton All Stars played at the first concert of the festival "VS swingt" back
then. MPS boss Brunner- Schwer was there at the mixing desk. Some of these
recordings were released in 1978 as the MPS LP "Alive and Jumping" (MPS
15469).
"Hamp" and his All Stars were really into it and brought the audience in the Black
Forest, known as rather reserved, to a frenzy, especially after the break. The old
master worked his magic on the vibraphone, of course, but also played drums
and piano and sang with an irrepressible sense of rhythm as one who had
unmistakably internalized swing. The top trumpeter Cat Anderson was another
internationally known musician in the eight-piece all-star band with which "Hamp"
toured Europe at the time. And there was someone else who was one of HGBS's
personal favorites: pianist and organist Milt Buckner. Buckner's block chords had
not only influenced Oscar Peterson and George Shearing, but also inspired the
passionate piano freak Brunner- Schwer. The live recording with Hampton's All
Stars in Villingen was the last record of Buckner, who died a few weeks later in
the USA of acute heart failure.
The musicians can be heard in exuberant joy of playing, with "Hamp" standing out
sovereignly on vibraphone and drums, as well as Buckner with soulful organ
playing. Everything sounds unspent fresh and cheerful and shows Hampton and
his fellow players in top form. This rousing swing, which should appeal not only to
jazz fans, is available exclusively on LP.

This compilation takes us on a journey to the Colombian coast where the passion for African music burns bright.It's impossible to understand this love affair without first looking to San Basilio de Palenque - the first free town in colonial Latin America, established in 1691 as a place of refuge and autonomy for black slaves. It's a place where pride in African heritage and culture could be kept alive, just 50 km away from Cartagena de Indias.

The Afro Caribbeans' connection to their roots gave rise to the "picós" - artisanal, high-powered sound systems akin to those found in Jamaica. These music aficionados have a keen ear for African melodies, leading to a vibrant collector's scene that brought Afro sounds to the streets of Barranquilla, Cartagena, and Santa Marta. This compilation showcases the best of Kenyan Benga music - a unique style with a distinct guitar-picking method that draws from traditional instruments like the nyatiti and orutu. Learn everything about the history and stories behind these African tracks, from the carefully guarded "exclusives" to the piconema - the practice of renaming songs in Spanish based on their lyrics or the reaction of the dancefloor.

The project has been led by Spanish vinyl collector Joan Pujol aka Golfo De Guinea surrounded by a team of passionate music lovers including Don Alirio, a musicologist from Barranquilla who offered a coastal perspective, and George Ouma, a Kenyan DJ, collector, and Benga advocate who helped with track selection and securing rights. The result is a compilation that captures the joy and energy of sub-Saharan polyrhythm, bringing together a vibrant mix of genres that are sure to move your feet. Dieser erschien im Jahr 2016 als Single unter dem Titel ("A Solitary Human Voice"). DYMNA LOTVAs erstes Album "The Land under the Black Wings: Swamp" kam noch im gleichen Jahr heraus. Das Debüt stellt auch den ersten Teil einer konzeptionellen Trilogie über Belarus dar. Mit dem Nachfolger, "Wormwood" der nicht zur geplanten Album-Trilogie zählt, kehren DYMNA LOTVA im Jahr 2017 zum Thema Tschernobyl zurück. Nach den gefälschten Wahlen im Jahr 2020 unterstützte DYMNA LOTVA offen die Proteste gegen den Diktator Lukaschenka. Nach einem politisch motivierten Prozess gegen den Metal-Sänger Lesley Knife, der auch als Gast auf der Single 'To Freedom' zu hören ist, werden alle geplanten Konzerte von DYMNA LOTVA offiziell verboten und die Live-Besetzung der Band ist zur Auflösung gezwungen. Sängerin Nokt Aeon kann ihrer politisch motivierten Verhaftung nur durch Flucht außer Landes entgehen. Das Duo will sich in der Ukraine treffen, als der russische Überfall den Plan zunichte macht. Nach zwei Wochen schweren Bombardements durch Russland und harten Kämpfen um Irpin gelingt Nokt Aeon die Flucht aus der Stadt. Beide Musiker finden schließlich Aufnahme in Polen. Für DYMNA LOTVA ist die Veröffentlichung von "The Land under the Black Wings: Blood" daher auch ein Akt des Widerstands. Ihre Musik kann auf mehr als eine Weise gehört werden: Es handelt sich zunächst, nur für sich genommen, um ein wundervoll melancholisches, zeitgenössisches Metal-Album auf der dunklen Seite des Genres; mit einem hörbar belarussischen Einschlag. Komponist und Multiinstrumentalist Jauhien Charkasau sowie Sängerin Katsiaryna "Nokt Aeon" Mankevich datieren die Gründung von DYMNA LOTVA präzise auf den 8. November 2015. Am diesen Tag entzündete die Nachricht, dass die belarussische Schriftstellerin Swetlana Alexandrowna Alexijewitsch den Literaturnobelpreis erhalten hat, das musikalische Feuer der Band. Noch am gleichen Tag schuf das Duo seinen ersten Song, der von der Nuklearkatastrophe von Tschernobyl inspiriert wurde. Dieser erschien im Jahr 2016 als Single unter dem Titel ("A Solitary Human Voice"). DYMNA LOTVAs erstes Album "The Land under the Black Wings: Swamp" kam noch im gleichen Jahr heraus. Das Debüt stellt auch den ersten Teil einer konzeptionellen Trilogie über Belarus dar. Mit dem Nachfolger, "Wormwood" der nicht zur geplanten Album-Trilogie zählt, kehren DYMNA LOTVA im Jahr 2017 zum Thema Tschernobyl zurück. Nach den gefälschten Wahlen im Jahr 2020 unterstützte DYMNA LOTVA offen die Proteste gegen den Diktator Lukaschenka. Nach einem politisch motivierten Prozess gegen den Metal-Sänger Lesley Knife, der auch als Gast auf der Single 'To Freedom' zu hören ist, werden alle geplanten Konzerte von DYMNA LOTVA offiziell verboten und die Live-Besetzung der Band ist zur Auflösung gezwungen. Sängerin Nokt Aeon kann ihrer politisch motivierten Verhaftung nur durch Flucht außer Landes entgehen. Das Duo will sich in der Ukraine treffen, als der russische Überfall den Plan zunichte macht. Nach zwei Wochen schweren Bombardements durch Russland und harten Kämpfen um Irpin gelingt Nokt Aeon die Flucht aus der Stadt. Beide Musiker finden schließlich Aufnahme in Polen. Für DYMNA LOTVA ist die Veröffentlichung von "The Land under the Black Wings: Blood" daher auch ein Akt des Widerstands. Ihre Musik kann auf mehr als eine Weise gehört werden: Es handelt sich zunächst, nur für sich genommen, um ein wundervoll melancholisches, zeitgenössisches Metal-Album auf der dunklen Seite des Genres; mit einem hörbar belarussischen Einschlag. Doch aus einer erweiterten künstlerischen Perspektive betrachtet, ist DYMNA LOTVAs "The Land under the Black Wings": Blood" ein klagender, wütender Schrei nach Freiheit und Gerechtigkeit!

A personal interpolation of "music for films (& television)" expounds upon diverse sounds: synthy 80s soundtracks, contemporary hip-hop beatmaking, ambient music, and The Hulk"s "Lonely Man Theme". Emil"s dark visions are full of noirish shadows and eerie neon glow - mood music for drug trips spent dreaming up new soundtracks to take drugs to! Emil Amos" forthcoming Zone Black album is a fully inhabitable world, its episodic narrative divided into an improbable balance between morbid ambient anthems and insouciant hip-hop instrumentals. Emil hadn"t heard it done quite this way before, so he took it upon himself. And it sounds real! Straight out of Madlib"s kitchen sink, and with a sense of brooding dread, "Jealous Gods" features throbbing beats, low synth paired with high vocal melody, layered together into something even more impossibly bizarre than the sum of their parts - like say, monks singing from on high, over a battleground littered with remnants of the old guard. Emil warps evocative tones, taking familiar sounds into new dimensions, reaching for the kind of depth and resonance that defines moments with an almost invisible touch.

Previous countless Trout Mask Replica repressings used scans of scans of scans of the cover image, but the original Cal Schenkel cover photo has been tracked down and reproduced here at its clearest — its resolution from the original release in 1969. If you’ve only ever seen a jpg online or fuzzy, smeared-looking CD issues from the 90’s, be prepared to be wowed by the fully engaging spectrum this iconic image casts. This 2xLP is pressed on heavyweight 180-gram black vinyl for that full-on frenetic feeling.

A long-awaited release, this is the 7” version of the Bob Dylan Classic “Blind Willie McTell”, out exclusively on black vinyl on August 20, 2021. The record will be available only at indie record stores and the Third Man Records online and physical stores. The 7” features two previously unreleased takes of the song, with the A-side being exclusive to this vinyl release. The B-side (take 5) will be included as part of Spring In New York: The Bootleg Series, Vol. 16 (1980-1985). The recordings on this single feature a formidable lineup of session musicians, including Mark Knopfler, Mick Taylor, Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare. “Blind Willie McTell” was the first track seriously worked on at the Infidels sessions and the last attempted as recording concluded almost a month later. In the end, it did not make the Infidels album, but in 1991, the acoustic piano-guitar version that Bob Dylan and Mark Knopfler recorded the last day was released on The Bootleg Series Volumes 1-3. The full band version from the first day of the sessions will now see the light of day as part of Springtime In New York: The Bootleg Series, Vol. 16 (1980-1985). A dynamic maturation of the group's thrilling big band sound, When The Dust Settles is a personal and cathartic expression of grief, rage, love and joy.

Fusing West African rhythmic tradition with the energy of London's jazz continuum, the album celebrates the restorative power of Black male brotherhood among diaspora communities in London.

Led by composer/arranger and UK-based Djembe player Yahael Camara Onono, Balimaya Project have established themselves as one of the most exciting and forward-thinking ensembles in Britain.
Enlisting guest vocalists Afronaut Zu, Obongjayar and Fassara Sacko across ten groove- laden and punchily percussive tracks, each song on When The Dust Settles engages intentionally with the significance of folkloric rhythms to illuminate themes that include the death of Camara Onono's older brother, losing a child, becoming a father, migration, survival and a search for truth.
