Das japanische No ist die älteste lebendige Theaterform. Themen wie Schuld, Liebe und Erlösung werden in Text, Tanz und Musik verhandelt. Eric Schaefer ist dem Land Japan und der japanischen Kultur schon seit vielen Jahren verbunden. So begann er, inspiriert durch seine Besuche des No-Theaters, während eines dreimonatigen Aufenthalts und Unterrichts bei Prof. Takanori Fujita (Kyoto City University of Arts) den Liedzyklus HAYASHI zu komponieren. Ein Begriff, der das im No agierende Musikensemble benennt, der aber auch einen Hain beschreiben kann. Die Erstaufführung von HAYASHI fand beim Jazzfest in der Oper Leipzig 2023 statt - gespielt vom Eric Schaefer Ensemble und gemeinsam mit den japanischen Künstler*innen Ichi-Go (Tanz) und Acci Baba (Videokunst). Nun liegt die Studioproduktion von HAYASHI vor. Auf Vinyl und in einer limitierten Auflage. Mit einem Coverbild der in Kyoto lebenden Kalligraphin Chizu Ikura. Die Musik des No hat sich aus einer heterogenen Vielzahl volkstümlicher und religiöser Spielarten (Matsuris, buddhistische Rituale) entwickelt und besitzt eine kompositorische Struktur, die den Ausführenden einerseits exakte Vorgaben macht, aber andererseits selbstbestimmte Räume und Unschärfen besitzt, die sich zu Improvisationen öffnen. Die Komposition HAYASHI von Eric Schaefer nimmt diesen Modus Operandi des Musizierens im No-Theater auf. Durch die Zusammenarbeit von klassisch gebildeten und improvisierenden Musizierenden wird eben dieses fluide Durchwirken von festgelegten und frei zu interpretierenden Kompositionsteilen ermöglicht. Es gibt hier nur eine Partitur für alle, eine semantische Ebene, auf der sich alle bewegen. "Letztlich", so Eric Schaefer, "gehen wir mit dem Ensemble HAYASHI der Frage nach, was uns diese alte Kunstform des No heute ästhetisch sagen kann, wie wir mit Freiheit und Gebundenheit in der Musik umgehen." Dies geschieht im Geiste Zeamis, dem Gründer des No-Theaters, der vor 600 Jahren schrieb: "Das Alte befragen, das Neue begreifen".

begonnen. Noch mehr Fahrt nahm Byrd auf, als er im Jahr darauf einen jungen Pianisten namens Herbie
Hancock unter seine Fittiche nahm und in sein hervorragend besetztes Quintett holte. Auf dem exzellenten Hardbop-Album “Royal Flush” konnte der Trompeter mit diesem Quintett 1962 all seine Trümpfe
ausspielen.

Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers - A Night In Tunisia
Dieser Albumklassiker ist ein Paradebeispiel dafür, wie Art Blakey den jungen Talenten in seiner Band eine
Plattform zur eigenen Entfaltung bot. Er lässt sie nicht nur ausführlich in ihren Soli zu Wort kommen,
sondern vertraut auch blind auf ihr Können als Komponisten. Einzige Ausnahme im Repertoire ist der
Bebop-Klassiker von Dizzy Gillespie, der diesem Album aus dem Jahr 1960 seinen Titel verlieh.

Blue Hawaii have been around for a decade, having released 3 full length albums and two EPs to date. Consisting of Ra and Ag, the duo met throwing parties and shows in Montreal and continue to create together despite living in separate cities - split between Montreal and Berlin.

You can hear The Stones' versions of Muddy Waters' "I Just Want To Make Love To You" and Slim Harpo's "I'm A King Bee" appeared on England's Newest Hit Makers, Chuck Berry's "Come On" on their debut single, Dale Hawkins' Susie Q" on 12 X 5, Marvin Gaye's "Hitch Hike" on Out of Our Heads and Howlin' Wolf's "Little Red Rooster" on their second no. 1 single. Howlin’ Wolf’s “Little Baby” (‘Stripped’ 1995). There’s Allen Toussaint’s “Fortune Teller” (‘Got Live If You Want It’ 1966), Muddy Waters’ “Mannish Boy” (‘Love You Live’ 1977), The Coasters’ “Poison Ivy” (‘No Stone Unturned’ 1970) and the closing track on the album is “You Better Move On” from southern soul singer Arthur Alexander (‘December’s Children’). The EP kicks off with ‘Trekia’, a chord-driven techno track evolving slowly with blissful pads and a dreamy melody. ‘Orisus’ follows a similar palette, adding more funk to the drums and introducing drama with an unexpected string variation.
On the B-side, ‘Atoll’ delivers a more rolling, percussive groove, with subtle riffs breaking through the repetition. The final track, ‘Triton’, takes a deeper, moodier turn, featuring melancholic bell like tones and a wandering arpeggio. Followers of Blue Hour will find echoes of his earlier work here, but ‘Duality’ brings a breath of fresh air and sense of refinement, making it the perfect home on Arsenik Records.

"Blue Garden", das fünfte Album der britischen Math-Rock-Band Delta Sleep, wurde in zweieinhalb Wochen in den belgischen Daft Studios geschrieben und mit Produzent Mark Roberts (Black Peaks, Toska, The Physics House Band) aufgenommen, während die Band die Gelegenheit nutzte, mit dem vorhandenen Equipment wie elektronische Sampler und Synthesizer ihren Sound zu bereichern. Booker Little - Booker Little 4 & Max Roach
Gerade einmal 20 Jahre alt war Booker Little, als er 1958 für United Artists sein Solodebütalbum “Booker
Little 4 & Max Roach” einspielen konnte. Auf ihm präsentierte sich der Trompeter, den Max Roach nach
dem Unfalltod von Clifford Brown in sein Quintett geholt hatte, als neuer Hoffnungsträger des Hardbop.
Seine Originalität bewies der Youngster, der leider auch schon mit nur 23 Jahren sterben sollte, dabei auch
mit drei Eigenkompositionen.

Wie viele seiner Zeitgenossen, begann der Hardbopper Donald Byrd sich Ende der 1960er Jahre auf seinen
Alben mit dem neuen Genre der Fusion-Musik auseinanderzusetzen. “Kofi” entstand 1969 und 1970 bei
Sessions mit zwei unterschiedlich besetzten, aber gleichermaßen hochkarätigen Ensembles, mit denen sich
Byrd auf rundum überzeugende Weise auf das neue stilistische Terrain vortastete, ohne gleich ganz von
seinen Hardbop-Wurzeln zu lassen.
