Robert Johnson was an American blues musician whose 1936 and 1937 recordings heavily influenced many, many future generations of artists. Despite the fact his recording career spanned a mere seven months, he is universally recognized as a master of the Delta blues style, one of the earliest-known styles of blues emerging from the Mississippi delta in the early twentieth century.

This second compilation of the King of the Delta Blues collects sixteen recordings previously available on the 78 rpm format and includes recordings of two Johnson songs that have since become blues standards: "Sweet Home Chicago" and "I Believe I'll Dust My Broom." In contrast to the deeply emotive songs released on the 1961 album, many of the tracks on this volume display Johnson's lighter side. In 2003 the record was ranked #424 on Rolling Stone's list of 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Whether he really needed to sell his soul to the devil at the crossroads to reach these great heights, we'll never know...

“I Believe I’ll Dust My Broom” is one of Robert Johnson’s most iconic recordings, later made even more famous by Elmore James’ legendary interpretation,
which helped establish the signature “broom style” in blues music. The track brilliantly translates boogie-woogie piano bass patterns into a single-guitar
performance, showcasing Johnson’s extraordinary technique.

“Dead Shrimp Blues” is often interpreted as a metaphor for sexual impotence, with Johnson’s emotionally resonant vocal delivery adding a sense of haunting
emptiness to the track.

Indigo Blues - an 8 track double disk journey through various depths of deep, cosy, warm and blue. Launching the release at the BBE store on the 19th May. Writing of Blues and Yellows is the highly acclaimed debut studio album by the British folk singer-songwriter Billie Marten, who wrote the album at the age of 16. At the end of 2015, the prodigy was nominated for BBC’s Sound of 2016 award. Marten’s thoughtfully crafted debut is a collection of tales, retrospect, and self-examination. It spawned four singles, “Milk & Honey”, “La Lune”, “Lionhearted”, and “Live”, which remain some of her most popular tracks to date.

The deluxe album of Writing of Yellows and Blues is now again available on vinyl. It includes a bonus D side which features demos, the bonus track “Out of the Black”, and an alternative version of her hit “Milk & Honey”.

Slope114 are Dmitri SFC & Elise Gargalikis, a duo that makes their house music live from home in San Francisco. That lends it a rare musicality and melodic lushness that sit their work right up there with deep house forefathers. This outing starts with the slouchy goodness and endearing bass of 'Dystopian Blues', complete with aloof vocals that exude cool. The dub is even more pillow and smooth than the Mark Ambrose mix that brings a little more roughness to the drums but still locks into a hypnotic vibe. 'Emu 2' is a gentle rhythm with dusty pads and candle-lit chords for when slow-burn subtlety is prized over immediacy. Classy stuff.

A remarkable release in John Lee Hooker's vast catalogue, Folk Blues, released by the Crown label in 1962, puts together tracks originally recorded for Modern Records between 1951 and 1954.

Among its many highlights are Bad Boy, one of the finest examples of Hooker's wordless humming and singing in unison with his guitar figures, and Rock House Boogie, which offers a sampling of Hooker's use of bottleneck style.

Malted Milk's 1975 album tackles subjects that concern the band's singer in particular, but also paints a picture of a society with which many people identify. Difficult present times, a broken family and dependent children. The character oscillates between moments of great lucidity and optimism, and moments of anger. Feelings that are reflected in a general vision of the world we live in today, devastated by the abuses of the powerful ones and rendered insensitive to the "false" freedoms they offer us. Could it be that the personal condition of the album's character is also the result of a twisted society?

Malted Milk takes a stylistic journey from strong soul and funk roots to resolutely more modern musical influences, all seasoned with sweet hooks ranging from disco to folk-world. Malted Milk is newly committed to speaking openly about uncomfortable subjects and honestly reflecting its passion for American and pop music. On Delta Estácio Blues, São-Paulo-based singer, composer and actor, Juçara Marçal delivers an electric, unflinching take on contemporary Brazil where samba, tropicalia and maracatu are reimagined via hip-hop production techniques.

Not known for his acoustic work, Buddy Guy unplugs on Blues Singer for a rare album-length excursion into folk blues. The guitarist gets down and dirty with 12 tracks that sound like they were recorded after hours in his living room or on his back porch.

Guy’s stinging leads are still evident as is his emotive voice, but both are less flamboyant in the unplugged setting. Accompanied by spare stand-up bass and brushed drums, Guy sounds nearly supernatural on covers from Skip James ("Hard Time Killing Floor"), Johnny Shines ("Moanin’ and Groanin’"), Son House ("Louise McGhee"), and John Lee Hooker ("Sally Mae") among others. It’s a low-key, low-down affair made for late nights, rainy days, and the saddest of moods.

Buddy Guy is just as convincing here, arguably more so, as on his barnstorming electric albums, making Blues Singer one of the bravest and most poignant albums in his catalogue.
