Music From Memory is excited to announce a special compilation that they’ve been working on for some time now; MFM053 – VA – Heisei No Oto – Japanese Left-field Pop From The CD Age (1989-1996). Compiled by long-time friends of the label, Eiji Taniguchi and Norio Sato, Heisei No Oto delves into a world of music released almost exclusively on CD and brings together a fascinating selection of discoveries from a little known and overlooked part of Japan’s musical history.

The last ten or so years have seen a global wave of interest in Japanese music encompassing ambient, jazz, new wave and pop records from the 1980s, some of which is increasingly considered the most innovative and visionary music of that time. Although some music from this period, in the form of ‘City Pop’ or ‘rare groove’ records, had been coveted by collectors and DJs for a number of years, most Japanese music from the time was little known outside and often even within Japan.

Sometime around the mid 2000s, two Osaka record store owners, Eiji Taniguchi of Revelation Time and Norio Sato of Rare Groove, along with a handful of deep Japanese diggers such as Chee Shimizu of Organic Music records in Tokyo, began to explore beyond the typical ‘grooves’ or ‘breaks’. Much like their counterparts in Europe and the US, they began delving into home-grown ambient, jazz, new wave and pop records, discovering visionary music, often driven by synthesizers or drum computers, that broke beyond the typical confines of their genres.

Spending tireless hours in local record stores and embarking on digging trips across the country, Eiji Taniguchi and Norio Sato, much like Chee Shimizu, have been at the forefront of unearthing and introducing many of the very Japanese records now loved and sought after around the world. Yet as YouTube algorithms and vinyl reissues would transport such music into the global consciousness and demand and therefore scarcity intensified for such records, so Eiji and Norio have recently begun to turn their attention to CDs.

The title of the compilation Heisei No Oto refers to the sound of the Heisei era, which began in 1989 and corresponds to the reign of Emperor Akihito until his abdication in 2019. Marking the culmination of one of the most rapid economic growths in Japanese history, 1989 also coincided with the music industry’s final shift away from vinyl in favour of CDs. And, although compact discs were first introduced seven years earlier it wasn’t until late into the ‘80s that, beyond dance music labels, CDs became the exclusive format for major and independent labels in Japan and throughout the world.

This however didn’t signal the end of the innovation in Japan. Many of those same musicians who have become known for their work in the ‘80s would continue to produce outstanding music well into the mid ‘90s, as greater innovation and advances in musical equipment allowed Japanese musicians and producers to refine and explore new sounds. While musicians such as the seminal Haruomi Hosono, whose productions feature on a number of tracks, would continue to push the boundaries of these new technologies, these technological advances also meant less established musicians were able to make use of increasingly affordable but state-of-the-art equipment.

Including music by Haruomi Hosono as well as Yasuaki Shimizu, Toshifumi Hinata and Ichiko Hashimoto who have become known and loved around the world in recent years, Hesei No Oto also features Japanese pop star Yosui Inoue, producers Jun Sato and Keisuke Kikuchi in aaddition to less established artists from the contemporary, jazz, new wave, pop and dance music scenes. Bringing together a selection of tracks that seem to define these specific genres and in fact move fluidly between a number of them, the music on the compilation is again underscored by experimentations with synthesizers and drum computers though with something of a gentle Pop sensibility. Reimagined here then under the encompassing term ‘Left-field Pop’, this is an exciting chapter in Japanese musical history that has only just begun to be fully explored.

Als Progressive Metal getarnt verdrehen The Hirsch Effekt auf ihrem sechsten Langspieler "Urian" wieder die Gewohnheiten. Das neue Album taucht musikalisch tief in die immer aufdringlicher werdende Ambivalenz aus Krisen und Alltag ein. "Urian" wird der ungebetene Gast genannt, dessen Begegnung meist ziemlich unerwünscht ist. Eine knappe Stunde fesselt es dich klanglich und weist mit einer hinterlistigen Umarmung geschickt auf all den schief gewickelten Mist hin!
"Urian" nimmt sich Zeit, lässt uns zwischen kraftvollem Dauerprasseln atmen und Luftholen. Harte Ansätze vor atmosphärischen Collagen - mal einfühlsam-akustisch, mit ausgefeilten Gesängen und groovigen Passagen - bis dir Urian wieder derb in die Seite prügelt. Deutlich weniger konzeptuell als das 2020er Album "Kollaps" ist es dennoch eine absolute Weiterentwicklung. Textliche Chiffren wirken intimer, Bezüge und Verweise liegen scheinbar klar auf der Hand. So werden sozialpolitische Themen besprochen, bei denen die Musiker sich selbst und die derzeitigen Entwicklungen kritisch hinterfragen. Neben Bots, die sich in Insta-Kommentaren demokratie-zersetzend in menschliche Köpfe einnisten, geben THE denen eine Stimme, die keine haben oder denjenigen, auf die all das schöne Leben noch wartet. Aus diesem zwar dystopischen, allerdings klaren Welt- und Werteverständnis erwächst eine gesittete Hoffnung, dank der "Urian" noch zum Tee verweilen darf.

Throughout 2022, The Wedding Present’s ‘24 Songs’ series saw the legendary indie band release two new tracks a month as double A sided 7”s, ultimately creating a much-sought-after box set. David Gedge has now re-curated full-length versions of all twenty-four tracks for a new compilation album that will also comprise five bonus recordings including one featuring The Wedding Present’s first guitarist, Peter Solowka.

‘24 Songs’ was a doff of the cap to The Wedding Present’s ‘Hit Parade’ project of 30 years previous. That series proved to be a real milestone for the band with them becoming only the second-ever artist to achieve twelve Official UK Top 40 hits in a calendar year – at the time something that only Elvis had achieved!

David Gedge says: “When it came to compiling the ‘24 Songs’ album, I decided not to sequence the tracks in chronological order. With six sides of vinyl, you have six ‘beginnings’ and six ‘ends’ to play with, and I felt that the opportunity to build some kind of a musical journey was too good to miss! Listening back to this collection, I have to say that I genuinely believe that, for this project, The Wedding Present have recorded some of the best tracks in our history. I loved releasing the singles, but it’s satisfying to have them all rounded up together.”

“The idea of releasing another collection of twenty-four tracks did initially seem quite daunting,” admits David Gedge in the deluxe-CD sleeve notes but, with Jon Stewart (also of Sleeper) having joined the band at the end of 2019 and their subsequent writing partnership flourishing, he began to feel confident that they would be able to produce a year’s worth of music. And, with one of the UK’s most influential independent record labels by their side in Clue, a key partner to EMI North who will be distributing the record - there was no looking back.

Wenn Afrob ein neues Album produziert, darf man zurecht alles erwarten. Er lässt sich nicht beschränken und geht jeden Weg. Das gilt auch für „König ohne Land“. Die neue Platte erscheint im Juni ’23 und stellt die Vielfalt des Godfather of Deutschem Rap erneut unter Beweis. Seit 25 Jahren dabei, ist er der letzte seiner Art und der erste, der voran in eine neue Richtung geht. Er repräsentiert HipHop immer
noch wie am ersten Tag. Er ist so real wie man es nur sein kann. Er kennt die Geschichte des Games und ist immer offen für neue Sounds. Und genau so ist auch die neue Platte. Von der Ansage im Intro bis zum letzten Gospel im Schlussstück rundet sie sich musikalisch wie textlich.

Das 2007er Studioalbum "The Sum Of No Evil" von The Flower King ist das nächste Album der Wiederveröffentlichungsreihe, die in re-mastertern und teils neu abgemischten Versionen wieder erhältlich gemacht wird. Das 10. Studioalbum markierte die Rückkehr von Schlagzeuger Zoltan Csörsz und war ihr letztes, bevor sie eine 5-jährige Pause einlegten. Zum ersten Mal erhältlich auf Vinyl als Gatefold 180g 2LP+C

Ursprünglich wurde Lost Not Forgotten Archives bereits 1997 als internationale Fanclub-Sammlung veröffentlicht: The Making of Falling Into Infinity (1997) dokumentiert im Detail die Entstehung des vierten Studioalbums der Band. Diese Sammlung, die den Fans einen seltenen Einblick in den Entstehungsprozess eines Dream Theater-Albums gewährt, wurde neu gemastert und ist nun als Special Edition CD Digipak, Gatefold black 2LP+CD, Ltd Gatefold dark green 2LP+CD und als Digitales Album erhältlich.

It will surely come as no surprise that Quentin Tarantino picked up on Link Wray’s ‘Rumble’ and ‘Ace of Spades’ for the movie ‘Pulp Fiction’. The brooding guitar man; born in North Carolina in 1929, as Fred Lincoln Wray Jnr, hails from pulp territory - the mythic Americana of rock n’ roll. Wray’s mother, from whom he inherited his striking appearance, was a Shawnee Indian, his father was a street corner preacher and grandpa did some jail time. Whilst having contracted tuberculosis when serving in the Korean war affected Wray’s vocals, his guitar playing mostly did the singing for him, but he wasn’t always volatile - ‘Lillian’ and ‘Alone’ revealing the heart beneath the tough exterior. Fiercely independent, when the rock n’ roll boom burst, Wray fashioned a 3-track home studio from a chicken shack and largely extricated himself from the music business although he would continue to record and play, stating ‘Money don’t rule me, record companies don’t own me.’ Nothing owned Link Wray but he owned rock n roll. Though the era of monochrome had ended, Link cast a long shadow, drawing admiration from the likes of Neil Young, Keith Moon and Pete Townshend who noted of Wray ‘He is the king, if it hadn’t been for Link Wray and ‘Rumble’, I would never have picked up a guitar.’ Though often marginalised throughout his career, Wray was like the night, an unquantifiable influence on successive generations of guitarists who sought to scorch rather than soothe. In November 2005, Bob Dylan was just about to step out on stage at the Royal Hall Albert, when he learned that Link had struck his final chord. In tribute to the great man, Dylan commenced his set with ‘Rumble.’

Ein brandneuer, bisher unveröffentlichter Neuzugang findet seinen Weg in die Lost Not Forgotten Archives: 'Distance Over Time Demos (2018)' dokumentiert die Schreibsessions für das vierzehnte Studioalbum von Dream Theater in Yonderbarn in New York, dem abgelegenen Studio, in dem die Band für die Entstehung dieses vielgepriesenen Albums zusammenkam. In der ursprünglichen Reihenfolge, in der die Stücke geschrieben und aufgenommen wurden, bietet diese Veröffentlichung einen faszinierenden Einblick in die Entstehung des Albums. Niedersachsen's calling:Die EgOi!sten sind zurück - und wie! Das 2002er Studioalbum "Notes from the Past" von Kaipa wird zum ersten Mal auf Vinyl erhältlich sein, und zwar in einer brandneuen, remasterten Ausgabe. Für das erste neue Album der Band seit 20 Jahren hatte sich Hans Lundin wieder mit Roine Stolt zusammengetan, neben Morgan Ågren, Patrik Lundstrom, Jonas Reingold, Aleena Gibson und Tove Thörn Lundin. Erhältlich auf Gatefold 180g 2LP+CD, sowie digital.

Eine brandneue, unveröffentlichte Ergänzung zu Dream Theaters umfangreichem "Lost Not Forgotten Archives"-Projekt: "Live at Wacken (2015)" zeigt die Band auf dem weltberühmten deutschen Festival während ihrer Sommer-Europatour, bei der sie ihr 30-jähriges Bandjubiläum feierte. Enthalten ist Material aus der gesamten Karriere der Band bis zu jenem Zeitpunkt, darunter 'Burning My Soul', 'Panic Attack' & 'Bridges in the Sky'.
