"1980 was a huge year in pop music with every genre competing for hits. We have already included many tracks on the records of the 1980 Yearbook, the 80-84 Final Chapter, and their extras so far in our appreciation of the year…

Those tracks were generally the bigger hits of the year, with their chart achievement a factor in their inclusion – however – that’s not the whole singles story of the year, and our celebration of 1980 wouldn’t be complete without shining a light on some of the years’ singles that have been compiled much less frequently over the years.

Welcome to THE VAULT for 1980… Some of the tracks included were Top 40 hits, some missed the chart completely. Some were representative of massive selling albums, and some were big hits in the U.S. and not in the U.K… but all are part of the wonderful pop story of 1980. "

'Better The Devil You Know' marks the long-awaited comeback of British band The Spitfires. Their first release with a refreshed line-up and also their debut on Bellevue Music, the track sees the band teaming up with producer Simon Dine (Paul Weller, Dexys Midnight Runners, Noonday Underground) to deliver a punchy, politically charged anthem.

On the B side, exclusive to the physical release only, is a remix of new track 'A Man Of Time' by french wizard and Paul Weller collaborator Le SuperHomard. Another new song to discover in its original form on the forthcoming album " MKII ". With musical hints of The Clash, The Specials and Hard-Fi at their most outspoken, 'Better The Devil You Know' is a sharp reflection on the ongoing turmoil in the Middle East. Frontman and songwriter Billy Sullivan explains "It relates to all war. A true protest song" The band is set to hit the road for a UK and European tour ( see below for details ), culminating in a headline show at London's KOKO on May 23rd.

Conflict formed in 1981 in Eltham, Southeast London, when frontman Colin Jerwood, inspired by early encounters with the Pistols 'Spunk' bootleg and following The Clash on tour, struck up a friendship with Crass and set about crafting a whole new kind of punk that totally upped the ante in terms anger and confrontation. Crass, the renowned anarchist punk collective, having got Conflict started by releasing their debut single 'The House That Man Bult' in 1982 on Crass Records, ended in 1984 as they had always intended. Now it was up to Conflict to pick up the baton and run with it. And they did, charging into the battle lines of authority.

The years that followed saw Conflict go from strength to strength, peaking on the 18th of April in 1987 at the London Brixton Academy for the 'Gathering of the 5,000' concert. A climax and explosion of rage and rebellion that inevitably ended up in a police provoked full-scale riot with police injuries, arrests, and with the band hopelessly in debt and banned from the majority of major London and UK venues.

Undeterred, Conflict continued into the 90s with their acclaimed 'Conclusion' album and remained a mainstay of the live punk circuit throughout. However, after more than two decades since the release of their (2003) 'There's No Power Without Control' album, the band are back with 'This Much Remains'. Featuring sixteen brand new Conflict creations, the album sees the band keeping one eye on their eventful past, and the other firmly on moving forward, both musically and politically. Animal Rights are still at the forefront of Conflict’s collective minds, giving a voice to the voiceless on songs such as 'A Mother's Milk' and 'Shut The Fuck Up', whilst their anger at world governments will never dissipate.

Also featuring an appearance by the late Benjamin Zephaniah on the track 'Cut The Crap', 'This Much Remains' is the sound of a band that continues to surprise and progress, decades after it first began. Conflict are Colin Jerwood - vocals; Fiona Friel - vocals; Gav King - guitars, melodica & Hammond; Fran Fearon - bass; Stoo Meadows - drums. YEARN IV captures the brooding and vivid world of two musical outsiders. Raised by the internet, the pair find their voice amid a sea of clashing cultural experiences and sonic histories, finding solace in the isolation of contemporary urban Australia. Recorded in Melbourne and completed in London, the album captures the duo's hyper local yet globally influenced rap sound at its core. Kuya Neil's drum heavy production collides with Teether's surreal and immersive storytelling, blending thrash metal and club music aesthetics with the echoes of the early internet. Teether & Kuya Neil released their first mixtape GLYPH via Chapter in 2021, receiving airplay from NTS, Dublab and Australian radio, plus writeups via Brooklyn Vegan and NME. Four tracks from `GLYPH' were featured in the iconic Australian Netflix series 'Heartbreak High' the following year. 2023 mixtape STRESSOR charted in the Australian Independent Top 10 and made it into end of year best of lists for The Guardian, Rolling Stone and NME Australia. The mixtape was nominated for Best Hip Hop Album at the 2024 Australian Independent Music Awards and named Album of the Week by 3RRR and fBI Radio. Teether & Kuya Neil have performed around Australia and New Zealand. They have played alongside international peers MC Yallah & Debmaster and They Hate Change as well as supported veteran alt-rap outfit Shabazz Palaces and Chicago Footwork pioneer RP Boo. As a solo artist, Teether has collaborated with New York rapper Billy Woods and toured with his outfit Armand Hammer in Australia in 2022. In 2024, he opened for the legendary Kim Gordon. Kuya Neil is an active producer in underground dance music, releasing tracks on UK labels Chinabot and Moveltraxx and has toured South East Asia as a DJ and promoter.

Think Star Wars meets Dracula, where rulers and rebels clash in a fght for the future.

Recorded with top-tier producers like Andrew Wade and Zakk Cervini, VAMP is a sonic juggernaut - industrial undertones, colossal breakdowns, and vocalist Joshua Roberts' electrifying delivery. Founded by Robbie Redway and psychedelic researchers Mathieu Seynaeve and WaiFung Tsang, UK-based 'United Freedom Collective' has grown into a network of artists including Jordan Stephens, Falle Nioke, Eliza Shaddad, Labdi, William Rees and Facesoul. Originally conceived around psychedelic therapy sessions, online yoga and breathwork channels, the musical scope has expanded on each of the four EPs released on Maribou State's 'Dama Dama' label, and here continues with their debut on Multi Culti. This time Robbie takes the lead on production and sole vocal duties on all five tracks, presenting a range of influences and style. Lead single 'Between Memories' blends tropes of ecstatic dance with uplifting vocal piano house, somehow making flutes fit in with Detroit strings to epic, hands-in-the-air effect.' Title track ‘Bright Patterns’ bridges the gap between Jungle, Jai Paul, and Jamiroquai, a fusion of funky filtered disco-house and electroclash with side-chained pop vocal hooks. ’El Yo’ smooths things out, a dope, laid back groove with a measured reflection on psychedelic healing and the perils of spiritual bypassing. ‘Higher Drums’ warms things back up for the dancefloor with trumpet, afro-latin percussion, and flute flourishes. Finally, ‘Moonshine’ is a soaring, Amapiano-inflected post-desert-house ballad. Influenced, in their words, 'by birds, trees, Buddhism, yoga, headless way meditations, Jungian analysis, Zen Taoism, Chinese plant medicines, indigeneity, Amazonian and psychedelic cultures, icaros and world healing traditions,' the music is eclectic, ranging from afro-inspired jazz to Chinese folk, psych-rock to dub and dance music, an ambitious and inclusive range, collabs that extend well beyond the borders of western musical traditions. Their sound was described by Clash Magazine as an 'aural mosaic that glitters with colour and potential,' and while the sheen of the production and precision of the arrangements might seem a departure from Multi Culti's left-field endeavours, the psychedelic idealism and global connectivity make it a natural fit with the open-ended ethos of the label. Having already had radio support from KEXP, BBC6 Music (Laverne, Ravenscroft, Charles, Nemone, Letts), Jazz FM and Worldwide FM (Gilles Peterson), with a live show that sold out Dalston Curve Garde and The Waiting Room as well as supporting Maribou State for their recent comeback show at Islington Assembly Hall in London the collective's future is looking exceptionally bright.

The Anchoress has been featured across press including The Sunday Times, The
Telegraph, Classic Pop, Uncut, The Observer, Clash Magazine, MOJO and more. She
has received critical acclaim throughout her career so far including praise from Elton
John. Catherine Anne Davies is a Welsh songwriter, multi- instrumentalist and
producers.

A long standing resident of the infamous FOLD in London whose risen to prominence with electrifying performances across Europe and a growing discography on esteemed labels such as Ear To Ground, Natural Selection, Raw Quarter, Laburnum, and Mhost Likely , Andromeda unveils her debut on Rant & Rave with Dark Matter EP. Drawing inspiration from the raw essence of 90s techno, with it she hones in her skills with modular synthesis and hardware production.


The EP opens with the title track, where a brooding tapestry of foreboding synths gradually rise in pitch and complexity, simulating the mysterious expansion of the cosmos. Lost Planet follows with hypnotic leads and an unyielding rhythm section. Appropriately titled Black Hole follows which cuts through with razor-sharp stabs and a resonating bassline. Closing with El Abismo, Andromeda ventures into darker sonic territories. This track is a no holds barred assault, where interwoven synth lines clash against commanding percussion and a punishing kick, asserting dominance over the dance floor with commanding force.

HotWax are a band set on experiencing life at its most intense. In the past two years, the Hastings-via-Brighton trio – comprising Tallulah Sim-Savage (vocals/guitar), Lola Sam (bass) and Alfie Sayers (drums) – have toured the world over, clocking up over 150 dates, including shows with Royal Blood and Frank Carter, and major festival appearances at Reading & Leeds and All Points East. Out of all this comes debut album Hot Shock (due March 7 via Marathon Artists), a record of adrenaline-jolted anthems about abandoning fear and leaping boldly towards the future.

HotWax worked with an all-female production team at the prestigious RAK studios, Catherine Marks (Boygenius, Wolf Alice) and Steph Marziano (Hayley Williams, Let’s Eat Grandma), as well as additional recording with Stella Mozgawa of Warpaint in Joshua Tree, California.

These songs were made to be played to a crowd, loud and with abandon. But there’s also a beating pulse of vulnerability underscoring the album. It’s an honest, moving sentiment sure to propel HotWax towards becoming the UK’s next big crossover rock act – and beyond.

The follow-up to their eponymous 2022 debut album, ‘What Is Your Definition Of Happiness?’ finds Dubinski broadening their sonic palette with the help of Grammy award winning producers Mike Horner (Franz Ferdinand, Placebo, Hot Chip) and Robbie Nelson (Beck, Royal Blood, The Kooks). Across an album themed around the concept of happiness you’ll find tales of crushed dreams, doomed romance and the perils of trying to survive as a DIY live band, all set to a compelling suite of bulletproof melodies which fuse elements of Franz Ferdinand, Parquet Courts, The Clash, Maximo Park, and even Paul Simon.

“A lot of these songs have something bittersweet to them,” says vocalist Eugene. “It’s a record of love, happiness, pain, sorrow, grief, healing, growth and acceptance. We wanted to tell a story with this album, and it flows similar to the way the seasons change.”

The award-winning film Vengeance Is Mine, All Others Pay Cash (2021) is romantic drama set in a working-class neighbourhood of Indonesia’s West Java. Although the story was set in the 1980s, the film’s music director Dave Lumenta doesn’t really want to use music from that period. He doesn’t want to automatically go with dangdut, the musical genre, a mix of Malay, Indian and modern pop music, the music of choice for majority Indonesia’s working class. He simply doesn’t want the film to be stuck in the time setting and the social class. The scoring is richer, not only was it inspired by dangdut, but it was also inspired by rock as well. In order for his imagination to be free of that time and social context, he decides to make music that was based on the characters, otherwise known as leitmotif.

Lumenta is interested in vulnerability, because it is something that the audience can find in the main character Ajo Kawir, an impotent who is unable to have an erection. Another main character Iteung is someone who is very liberal in terms of her sexuality, but she also struggles with an issue as well, which is their issues, a traumatic past. The film successfully portrays the clash of these two characters. And from identifying these two characters, the composer creates a melody or leitmotif that represents each character. The use of analogue instruments is also consistent with the film’s spirit, which is also shot using analogue camera. Lumenta created the music using acoustic instruments, such as the recorder, along with other sounds from an analogue synthesizer.

The sound produced may not be perfect, just like the are grainy quality of an analogue film, due to limitation of the medium. But it is precisely due to that limitation that the eyes and ears are compelled to watch and listen actively; we must squint to catch something more perfect, or listen closely to filter out imperfections in the sound. Consuming art created with analogue tools requires a different method of listening, watching, and working process.

Kid Katana Records teamed up with SNK, Dotemu and Leikir Studio to release Metal Slug Tactics OST, a return of this iconic franchise renewed in a dynamic tactical RPG.

This OST was fully composed by Tee Lopes, the talent behind the music of TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge, Sonic Mania and Streets of Rage 4: Mr X’s Nightmare. He crafted a solid piece of music perfectly fitting the colorful and intense gameplay.

"‘man oh man !’ is the sophomore 11 track album from indie singer-songwriter Martin Luke Brown.

Marking a significant new era in both his personal and musical life, Martin tackles a myriad of themes; self-awareness and personal growth, treasured friendships, swept-off-your-feet romance and gut wrenching heartbreak - all with a laidback, indie singer-songwriter sound that naturally shapes the album into three linear phases: the end of a relationship, new beginnings and the consequential feeling of accepting change.

Instrumentation is simple and recorded with producer and friend Matt Zara using almost exclusively analog technology – tape machines and vintage mics, a messiness that the duo embraced from the get go.

Martin has released over 100 songs as either a co-writer or a producer, with BTS, Dylan, Jacob Banks, Gavin James, Sam Tompkins,James Smith, Sody andJack Kane. He has also seen a wealth of success as part of pop supergroup FIZZ alongside Orla Gartland, dodie, and Greta Isaac, earning widespread praise from the likes of Rolling Stone UK, Dork, DIY, Clash & more."

NO CONTACT LP - is a live compilation that captures the raw energy of their performances between 2011 and 2019. This intense anthology distills the essence of their sound: noise driven electronic power, relentless rhythms, and obsessive vocals. For the first time, this fury is preserved on a double vinyl with a special edition.

Neue Musik von Anton Newcombe von BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE und DOT ALLISON (u.a. ONE DOVE, Solo, Sonic Cathedrals). Eine Zusammenarbeit zwischen den beiden Soundtüftlern. Während des Lockdowns in Berlin und Schottland aufgenommen, arbeiten Dot Allison und Anton Newcombe als All Seeing Dolls zusammen. Produziert von Anton Newcombe in Berlin, schickten er und Dot sich gegenseitig Gesangs- und Musikideen, um Dots eindringlichen Gesang mit ihren Fähigkeiten als Multiinstrumentalisten zu vereinen. Auf dem Album finden sich Gitarre, Ukulele, Klavier und Autoharp, gespielt von Dot, sowie zusätzliche Beiträge von Hakon Adalsteinsson (Gitarre) und Uri Rennert. Im Interview mit Clash Magazine sagte Dot über den Entstehungsprozess: "Wir haben unseren Weg gefunden... viele der Songs wurden während des Lockdowns geschrieben... wir sprachen über Musik, das Leben, was wir für wichtig halten und teilten Songs, die wir mögen und sprachen über Künstler, die wir mögen... wir beschlossen, Ideen auszutauschen... also schickte ich etwas mit Autoharp und Stimme oder Akustik und Stimme, und er schickte mir tolle Ideen zurück... wir haben uns gegenseitig unterstützt und gestärkt... und ich sagte zu ihm, dass es ein bisschen wie ein kleines Weihnachten ist, die Tracks zu hören, nachdem er sie zurückgeschickt hatte." Auf erstem hören musikalisch näher an DOT ALLISONs letzten Sonic Cathedral-Output, finden sich hier die eher BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE-typischen Ideen in den klanglichen Tiefen wieder.
