Kenney ist eine experimentelle Vokalistin, Komponistin und Lehrerin, die sich auf die transformativen Kräfte der Stimme und die Beziehung des Klangs zu mystischen Erfahrungen konzentriert. Neben ihrer Zusammenarbeit mit Oren Ambarchi, Tashi Wada, Avey Tare, Alvin Lucier, Sarah Davachi, dem Ensemble Nist-Nah, Sunn O))) und zahlreichen anderen ist sie bekannt für ihre Aufführung indonesischer Vokalmusik (Sindhenan) und persischer Vokalmusik (Radifs) sowie für ihre eigenen Kompositionen, die Elemente beider Musikrichtungen aufgreifen. Im Englischen gibt es den Ausdruck "to pull at one"s heartstrings". In der deutschen Sprache gibt es für dieses Bild keine direkte Übersetzung. Jetzt aber zum Glück irgendwie schon, in Form dieses Albums. Denn beim Hören von EXILE IN SPACE zupft und zuppelt, zieht und dehnt etwas im Inneren, meist in etwa da, wo bei den meisten Menschen das Herz vermutet wird. Melancholie trifft es eben nicht, ist auch ein viel zu abgenudelter Begriff in der Musik und hat hier keinen Platz. Was ENIK und das PARANORMAL STRING QUARTET auf EXILE IN SPACE in diesen acht musikalischen Kleinoden entstehen lassen, geht tiefer. Großartige Sätze wie: "Don"t pick up the Phone, it could be your mother! She wont candycrush herself out of this mess.", lässt Enik in "Electric Sheep" von einer knazigen Roboterstimme in Gedichtform vortragen, während im Hintergrund ein Omnichord und ein Cello darüber diskutieren, wer von beiden eigentlich einsamer ist als der andere. "TRUE MF", das man von ENIK Solo bisher als richtigen Dancefloor-Banger kannte, kriegt mit entschleunigten, warmen aber trotzdem nie und nimmer kitschigen Streicherparts neue Dimensionen (ziemlich viele sogar). Diese paranormalen Ergänzungen halten ENIK wenn nötig auch mal auf dem Boden - oder besser gesagt in der gemütlichen, warmen Stube am Fenster, wenn er im Titeltrack mit Cervantes im Kopf von der eher weniger gemütlichen Weltlage singt und vom Exil im Weltall träumt (EXILE IN SPACE). In KANGAROO unterhält sich Enik mit einem toten Känguru, was ihn schlagartig seiner eigenen Vergänglichkeit ermahnt und somit das exzessive Leben des Protagonisten herzzerreißend in Frage stellt. Der Song endet in einer dreiminütigen, elegischen Streicherimprovisation, die für Enik persönlich, den absoluten Höhepunkt dieses Albums darstellt. Zurückgelassen wird man als Hörer*in am Ende mit dem knarzigen BETTY LEE. Ein Lied, das gut und gerne 70 Jahre alt sei könnte, gleichzeitig aber auch nach vorne in die Zukunft weist. Alles in allem acht funkelnde, schräge, organische und liebevolle Songs, die vom Herzen bis ins Weltall reichen. Womit wir wieder bei den "heartstrings" sind und dem, was eben hier noch nicht verraten wurde: Was der englische Ausdruck "to pull at one"s heartstrings" auf Deutsch bedeutet. Aber dafür sind ENIK und das PARANORMAL STRING QUARTET die Experten.

Mr. K’s series of edits on Most Excellent Unlimited is nothing if not eclectic, and utilitarian — as befits a veteran DJ of Danny Krivit’s stature. For our latest, Krivit pulls two disparate gems out of his bag of tricks and fits them neatly on a single 7-inch piece of vinyl.

In 1972 Ralph Bakshi’s landmark underground animated film Fritz the Cat was released, featuring a soundtrack performed by an all-star cast of San Francisco area musicians associated with the Berkeley-based Fantasy label. Perhaps Fantasy’s biggest artist was the vibes player Cal Tjader, who debuted in 1955 and was still going strong when songs were gathered for the movie’s soundtrack nearly twenty years later. Rather than simply using one of his older, already-recorded tunes, Tjader laid down a completely new version of his earlier hit record “Mamblues.” This time however, he swapped his standard latin percussion accompaniment for a can’t-miss rhythm section of Bernard Purdie, Chuck Rainey, and Arthur Adams. The result was a searing funk workout that took the latin jazz classic to new heights. Mr. K subtly warms this one up by adding a hint of reverb and bringing the tempo down a notch, pushing things from frenetic to funky, and firmly into friendly mixing territory for the DJs.

For our flip side, we turn to an unsung jewel amongst Philadelphia’s many contributions to disco music. Executive Suite released a series of singles in ’74 and ’75 that were recorded at the famed Sigma Sound Studios and had ties to a number of better known disco luminaries, among them the holy trinity of Baker-Harris-Young and, on “You Believed In Me,” the mighty Patrick Adams. Along with his longtime associate Stan Lucas, Adams garnished the vocal quartet’s composition with a driving arrangement and epic, soaring strings. The combined effect produced a vibrant, uplifting club cut that echoes the positive spirit of Curtis Mayfield’s “Move On Up” while being altogether its own thing. For our latest release Mr. K focuses solely on Adams’s instrumental section, returning repeatedly to that addictive string riff and creating a propulsive rhythm track that just doesn’t quit. And we don’t want it to!

As always, these connoisseur’s choice cuts have been remastered and pressed to Most Excellent Unlimited’s standards, and are primed and ready on 7-inch for DJs and home listeners alike.

True to his solar-powered take on the classic US house sound, the owner of the Nice People outlet beckons us onto the path of luscious summer lounging with a quartet of no-nonsense dance floor rippers, lithely alternating sequences of hi-intensity shuffle, Roule-style dynamics and further space age-infused drifts across the scintillating vaults of glam disco. Jacuzzi-warm funk and coastal luxuriance all the way.

Drawing first blood, 'My Life My Love' is a proper fiery blast-off, flush with Scarano's continental breakfast of roaring Chicago drums, spinning synth motifs, processed brass and balearic-like ambience. Churning it like there's no tomorrow. 'Gedda Feelin' continues on a slightly more jagged note and true-school discoid vibe. Propelled by a springy drum work, mesmeric vocal loops and soulful Rhodes chords, it's a restless jacking house number that unfurls, bold and pumped-up at full stretch. On 'Playin da Song', Scarano blends in a fine match of Afro-funk, retro-laced electronica and filtered house chug, whereas the closing cut '2404' opts for a finely integrated mish-mash of piano-fuelled nostalgia, heavy-lidded bop phrases and low-slung boogie, ready to take on any smokey lounge and beachside party with its sluggish punch and exquisite suavity.

Brian Auger’s Oblivion Express was the phoenix that rose from the ashes of sixties combo The Trinity. Fusing R&B, jazz, soul and funk, keyboard maestro Brian Auger created a new breed of music that took the US and the UK by storm. Auger’s unique experimentation culminated in rhythm-infused jazz funk that united Black and white ’70s audiences. The 6 studio albums that make up Complete Oblivion illustrate the group’s diverse musical influences and progression, from the 1970 self titled debut’s heavy jazz-rock to the jazz fusion, latin and disco tinged Reinforcements from 1975 - this process no doubt powered by the groups’ evolving line up, which included guitarists Jim Mullen and Jack Mills, drummers Robbie McIntosh & Steve Ferrone, bassists Barry Dean and Clive Chaman and vocalist Alex Ligertwood. The musical highlights within Complete Oblivion are many, but particular highlights to mention have to be Total Eclipse (Oblivion Express), Fill Your Head With Laugher (A Better Land), the blistering cover of Eddie Harris’ Freedom Jazz Dance (Second Wind), the Barry Dean composition Whenever You're Ready, the version of Marvin Gaye’s Inner City Blues (Closer To It), Beginning Again (Straight Ahead) and the mind bending keyboard tour de force Brain Damage (Reinforcements). Given the groups legendary status among fellow musicians such as Zucchero and Herbie Hancock, DJ’s like Kenny Dope and Gilles Peterson and Auger’s legion of fans worldwide - that mission was fully accomplished - or to put it another way, in the words of super fans The Beastie Boys: “Those who remain oblivious to the obvious delights of Brian Auger’s Oblivion Express do so at their own risk!”

One of the most popular instrumentalists in the world, trumpeter Chris Botti gets back to the jazz essence of his artistry on his Blue Note debut Vol. 1. The album is a beautiful ballads collection featuring stunning new renditions of beloved standards including “Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered,” “Old Folks,” “My Funny Valentine,” “Someday My Prince Will Come,” and “Blue In Green,” as well as a cover of Coldplay’s “Fix You” and the vocal feature “Paris” with John Splithoff. Teichmann + Söhne’s »Flows« is not so much the result of a collaborative process as it is a process in itself. Over the course of nine pieces, the Gebrüder Teichmann—Andi and Hannes—and their father Uli repeatedly find common ground between the very different musical styles, sound aesthetics, and subcultural codes they have internalised throughout their lives. The source material out of which the album evolved was culled from several recordings of rehearsal sessions in preparation for the trio’s concerts that took place between the years 2012 and 2022. The three added only a few overdubs to those recordings but edited them rigorously to both preserve and transform the spirit of their unlikely collaboration. The combination of Uli’s background as a versatile jazz artist and multi-instrumentalist with his sons’ penchant for dub techniques, modular synthesis, and live sampling as well as their interest in electronic dance music take on ever-different shapes. »Flows,« released on the occasion of Uli’s 80th birthday, is as joyful, lively and free-spirited as its makers.

It took the three musicians decades to get together to jam. Uli and Lu, the mother of Andi and Hannes, ran the legendary Jazzclub Kneiting between 1978 and 1983 while he also made a name for himself as a musician who, besides jazz, is knowledgeable in a plethora of music styles from all over the world and has an instrument collection to match. Naturally, Andi and Hannes rebelled against this versatility by opting for simplicity. Already as pre-teens, they formed a punk band and once they got a whiff of the burgeoning techno scene, strayed even further from their father’s path. They eventually moved from their native Regensburg to Berlin where they made a name for themselves with a slew of releases on seminal labels like Disko B or Kompakt before starting to more regularly collaborate with musicians from the realms of Contemporary Music, Improv, and Sound Art. Even after Uli had finally contributed some saxophone licks to the brother’s 2011 »They Made Us Do It« LP, it indeed needed someone else to make them do it, i.e. finally get together to reconcile their musical differences in a creative way.

Finding out that the three had never performed together, Yoichi Osaki from Berlin’s iconic Miss Hecker venue, a focal point of the city’s so-called Echtzeitmusik (real-time music) and Improv scene, scheduled them to play their first concert on April 1, 2012. Even though the date was chosen deliberately, things got serious very quickly and this first joint concert proved to be the first of many. It also laid the foundation for »Flows« since the three would start recording their rehearsals. Revisiting the roughly 90 recordings, some of which clock in at a full hour, after ten years of playing with each other then started what Hannes describes as a »form-finding process.« It was a holistic one and involved all three of them, extending also to their choice of cover artwork, a piece created by Lu, who died in 2016 and to whom the album is dedicated. For the collage, she had used photos of the place where it all began, Regensburg, and the river that flows through it, the Danube. This made the piece, coincidentally created around the time Teichmann + Söhne started playing their first concerts together, correlate perfectly with the working process of the three musicians on a visual level.

Similarly, Teichmann + Söhne can be thought of as a human-musical collage. It is a meeting of three different musicians who all have in common that they have occupied alternative spaces and perfected a variety of musical styles and subcultural codes throughout their lives. When those flow into each other, this necessarily creates something that is as unique as the nine tracks collected on this album. While it is mostly Uli who takes the lead on pieces like the appropriately titled »Im Zwischen« (»In the Inbetween«), the brothers respond by live sampling his playing, thus serving as a creative interface between acoustic sounds and electronic responses. This in turn provides a framework in which Uli can improvise on a variety of acoustic instruments like the saxophone and the clarinet as well as a mandolin and glockenspiel or even percussion. This indeed makes their music flow—across different generations, between different musical ideas and genres, into previously uncharted territory.

Das einzigartige Setup, bei dem Sampha und seine Band in der Mitte des Raums auftraten, ermöglichte den Fans einen intimen Zugang zu der improvisierten Performance neuer, unveröffentlichter Musik und alternativer Arrangements von Samphas Katalog, die das Publikum "wie gebannt" (Pitchfork) zurückließ. In diesem Herbst wird Sampha eine größere Version der Satellite Business Live-Show auf Tournee mitnehmen. Die neueste Single "Only", die von einem Musikvideo von Dexter Navy in Zusammenarbeit mit Sampha begleitet wird und auf dem Vorab Track "Spirit 2.0" folgt, zeigt einen extrem lebendigen Sampha, der melodisch über einen fragmentierten Hip-Hop-Beat mit Co-Produktion von spanischen Musiker El Guincho singt. Im Juni kehrte Sampha zum ersten Mal seit fünf Jahren für seine Satellite Business Residencies in London und New York auf die Bühne zurück. Das einzigartige Setup, bei dem Sampha und seine Band in der Mitte des Raums auftraten, ermöglichte den Fans einen intimen Zugang zu der improvisierten Performance neuer, unveröffentlichter Musik und alternativer Arrangements von Samphas Katalog, die das Publikum "wie gebannt" (Pitchfork) zurückließ. In diesem Herbst wird Sampha eine größere Version der Satellite Business Live-Show auf Tournee mitnehmen. Den Anfang machen mehrere Abende in London in der St. Johns at Hackney Church im Oktober, bevor er nach Nordamerika zurückkehrt, um in großen Städten aufzutreten: Los Angeles, Toronto, New York City, Chicago, San Francisco, Washington D.C., Philadelphia und Atlanta. Anfang Dezember kehrt er nach Europa zurück und spielt in Berlin, Amsterdam und Paris. Wie sein Schöpfer lässt sich auch "LAHAI" nicht in eine Schublade stecken. Das neue Album ist eine Mischung aus Jazz, Soul, Rap, Dance, Jungle und westafrikanischer Musik, mit der Sampha seine produktionstechnischen und stimmlichen Ambitionen auf ein neues Niveau hebt. Als begnadeter Sänger , Songwriter und Produzent ist es kein Wunder, dass Künstler wie Kendrick Lamar, Stormzy, Travis Scott und früher auch Drake, Solange, Frank Ocean, Beyoncé, Lil Wayne und Alicia Keys ihn für seine unnachahmliche Stimme sowie seine Beiträge zum Songwriting und zur Produktion ihrer Musik um Unterstützung baten. Zu seinen früheren kreativen Partnerschaften gehören die Modedesignerin Grace Wales Bonner, das Shy Light Zine mit Durimel (der auch das LAHAI-Artwork gedreht hat), sein Process-Film mit dem Regisseur Kahlil Joseph und kürzlich die Zusammenarbeit mit Jonny Lu, mit dem Sampha das Artwork für sein LAHAI-Album und sein neues Logo entwickelt hat. Wenn "Process", Samphas 2017 mit dem Mercury-Preis ausgezeichnetes Debütalbum, einen Künstler zeigte, der seinen eigenen Platz in der Welt suchte und schließlich auch fand, ist "LAHAI" eine Übung in der radikalen Akzeptanz und Freude am Leben und der Schönheit der Reise bis hierhin.
