The first instalment in our new 'Mr Bongo Record Club' compilation series - a selection of favourites, recent discoveries and sought after obscurities, which form the basis of our DJ sets and our radio show of the same name. Including cuts by Claudia, Cortex, Dave Pike Set, Fruko, Neno Exporta Som, Connie Laverne, Barbosa and more. The original concept for 'Mr Bongo Record Club' was a radio show that allowed us to air our treasured record collections, recorded and broadcast once a
month. We wanted to create an outlet free from any genre or BPM restrictions, not constrained by the need to beat-mix every record, a space where we could play latest finds alongside favourites. The only self-imposed rule being that
it had to be played from vinyl. We have always DJ'd across-the-board, but playing in an eclectic way hasn't
always been easy. Recently DJ's such as MCDE, Floating Points, Nick The Record, Leon Vynehall, Four Tet, Jeremy Underground, Antal (Rush Hour), Sassy J and Young Marco - to name a few - have opened things up with very diverse sets to
younger audiences; Brazilian samba-rock, next to modern soul, highlife, disco, boogie, jazz, house, techno and beyond.  
We're seeing a rare groove like sensibility. A shift towards the attitude of legendary club nights hosted by the likes of Mr Scruff and Gilles Peterson, where you could hear house, hip hop, Turkish funk, boogie, jazz, dub and Latin
back to back. At the same time it isn't a nostalgic or retro movement, people have a progressive attitude and a thirst for new-old music. It is a vibrant and exciting time - we are proud to be a part of it.

Nilüfer Yanya has built a reputation as one of the UK’s mostdistinctive and compelling voices, seamlessly blending indie rock,soul and jazz into a sound uniquely her own. She released her third studio album, ‘My Method Actor’, onSeptember 13th, 2024, via Ninja Tune. Turbo Recordings is proud to present the revival of German techno giant Gregor Tresher’s Sniper Mode alias with the Riot Gear LP. We have been promised that this release will usher in a Golden Age of Electro in which we will serve at the right hand of the Lord for a starting annual salary of €43,000. Not bad.

Riot Gear showcases Tresher’s established production genius over 11 cuts of S-tier electro marked by menace, depth, and sharp melodic hooks. Lead single “Blinded by the Dark” is a collaboration with Dave Clarke, the most respected man in electro and perhaps just in general, and features the most punishing drop in recent memory. The album also includes standout vocal contributions from Detroit techno pioneer Jay Denham (“Sanctuary of Vices”), Miami Bass kingpin Exzakt (“Echoes From a Wasted Land”), dance-world enigma Kira (“Phantom Pain”), and Turbo favorite Perel (“Modesty Is a Virtue”). We would argue that this album represents a landmark achievement in the genre, which you have to admit would reflect pretty well on us as a label.

It is not every day that Turbo Recordings embraces the responsibility of husbanding a full-album release, and you should know that it comes as a cost. The additional listening time, track title typing, and intensive download/upload workload have pushed our dedicated staff of 90 to its breaking point. We have a lot going on over here.

On debut album ‘While I'm Distracted’, London-based New Zealander Arjuna Oakes draws inspiration from contemporary soul and jazz, touches of global folk, electronica, modern classical, and post-rock, with dynamic arrangements and production. ‘While I'm Distracted’ is an album about fighting for your innocence and right to be a vulnerable and honest human. Arjuna’s songwriting explores themes of identity, depression, existentialism, social media, loss of innocence, and finding hope for the future through artistic expression.

'I'm obsessed with albums,' says Arjuna. 'I've made seven EPs, but needed time to tackle a full length record. I was using the EPs to learn the craft of how to make a great album, much like a director will make short films before they make a feature. I wanted to take the listener on a journey and spark their imagination. Hopefully the album expresses complex emotions, rather than having an intellectual concept. I'd rather ask questions than answer them'.

Across the album, Arjuna performs vocals, piano, keyboards, synths, production, and wrote the string arrangements. He’s joined by Harrison Scholes on bass, Jo Jenkins and Andre Smith on guitar, Sam Notman on drums, Louisa Williamson on saxophone, Nathan Haines on flute, Kate King on french horn, Leah Thomas on clarinet, Hilary Hayes and Emma Colligan on violin, Chris Van Der Zee on viola, Charley Davenport on cello, Zane Hawkins on percussion, James Macewan on trumpet, and additional production by Callum Mower.

First release on Saucy Lady’s own new label Dippin’ Records features double sider smashers. Starting with the A side, cover of Carly Simon’s Why, a classic funk tune produced by Nile Rogers that got a fresh new boogie revamp, produced by Saucy Lady herself and Yuki “U-KEY” Kanesaka.

With a more dance-floor friendly up-tempo treatment, it will guarantee hands up in the air and hips moving round & round ‘n side to side.

Flip side is another heater, a cover of the 80s hit slow jam One More Time by Phil Collins but sped up and turned into broken beats flyness, followed with a deep house remix produced by Daisuke Miyamoto, member of Orienta-Rhythm who’s had numerous notable releases with King Street Sound.

B side ends with an acappella version so you too can play with your own creative version of the classic. With limited vinyl copies, you don’t want to sleep on this.

Searchlight Moonbeam is the new narrative compilation from Time Is Away (Jack Rollo and Elaine Tierney) whose eponymous monthly NTS Radio shows, tinctured fusions of fugitive sounds and reverie-inducing archival speech, have won them an ardent following. It follows from the London-based duo’s Ballads, a remarkable driftwerk released on A Colourful Storm in 2022.


Searchlight Moonbeam is an autumnal dreamscape, intimate and vespertine, pensive and irresolute. An imagined community where differences drop off and resonances emerge – between Maher Shalal Hash Baz affiliates Kasumi Trio, Taiwanese score composer Chen Ming Chang whose ‘Rainwater’ (written for Hou Hsiao-Hsien’s 1986 film Dust In The Wind) is exquisitely heartbroken, and the plangent improvisations of self-taught French pianist Delphine Dora.


Revelations are frequent: the bedsit isolationism of Bo Harwood and John Cassavetes’ ‘No One Around to Hear It’ (from The Killing of a Chinese Bookie); the narked minimalism of Klang (an early 2000s band formed by ex-Elastica guitarist and featuring prize-winning experimental novelist Isabel Waidner on bass); the etude-grooves and echoic wobble of below-the-radar French avant-gardists Omertà ; the beautiful, plaintively dubby ‘Is It You?’ by Slapp Happy; a psych-tinged reimagining of PiL’s ‘Poptones’ by Simon Fisher Turner (one half of Deux Filles, and here, recording for él as The King of Luxembourg) that's as perverse as the cover of Throbbing Gristle’s 20 Jazz Funk Greats.


Searchlight Moonbeam is the musical analog of an Italo Calvino novel or a medieval fable. Associative, intuitive, borderless. Emotional and mysterious. Endowed with the tactility of Braille. A private language that is both unknowable and understood. It is a record of the seasons, for the seasons.

2023 marks the tenth anniversary of Time Is Away’s first broadcast. Featuring an evocative essay by writer Jeremy Atherton Lin and disarming cover art by Penny Davenport, Searchlight Moonbeam showcases Rollo and Tierney’s still-unrivalled talent for gloaming melodies, disques du crépuscule, ensorcelled storytelling.

At the start of the 60s, a new wave of gospel-influenced jazz started to emerge, with hits such as Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers' "Moanin'" and Cannonball Adderley's "Work Song" epitomizing this evolution in the genre. The terms "soul jazz" and "funky jazz" were coined as a way to describe this new sound that was making an impact in the US and also on the other sides of the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.

In 1964, Ray Charles made his first visit to Japan. Then, in 1968, Martha & The Vandellas and Stevie Wonder set foot in the country, followed by Sam & Dave in 1969, Ike & Tina Turner in 1970, and B.B. King in 1971. The TV show "Soul Train" also began airing in Japan in the early 1970s. A watershed moment happened in 1973 when Sammy Davis Jr. was cast in a TV commercial for Suntory whisky — and the influence of the US Black entertainment world had really landed, with soul, jazz, and funk artists becoming household names.

Nippon Columbia played a pivotal role during this turning point. The company had contracts with Buddah Records and Blue Thumb Records, releasing notable works by artists such as Gladys Knight & The Pips, Curtis Mayfield, The Crusaders, and The Pointer Sisters. At the same time, the label was also releasing several Japanese soul, jazz, and funk projects under the lead of music director Jiro Inagaki. Inagaki, a saxophonist who began his professional career in the early 1950s, honed his skills at U.S. military camps, where he shared his love of music with the Black servicemen. In the 1960s, he played with drummer Hideo Shiraki's band, which was widely considered to be Japan's representative group of the funky jazz movement. Later, Inagaki went on to pursue more cutting-edge sounds with his Soul Media project, including being a pioneering figure in the "jazz rock" genre. By working closely with Inagaki and his various musical projects, Nippon Columbia really placed the company at the center of an exciting and important period in Japanese music.

In 1965, Nippon Columbia opened a recording studio in Tokyo's Akasaka neighborhood. Akasaka was also home to the first ever discotheque in Japan, the legendary MUGEN, which ran from 1968 to 1987 and where many acts performed, including Con Funk Shun, the Bar-Kays, Ike & Tina Turner, B.B. King, Sam & Dave, Three Degrees, and Edwin Starr, as well as many local Japanese singers and musicians. This melting pot of creativity in the area led to the recording of many singles and albums by Japanese artists that were infused with the sounds of soul and funk. Most of these recordings were not available outside of Japan and remain rare and unknown musical gems. The selection you are holding in your hands is an explosive collection of 10 essential tracks released by the legendary Nippon Columbia label between 1969 and 1977, capturing the raw, unapparelled energy that was flowing through the air of the Akasaka streets at this electrifying time. "Niagara's third LP Afire is the rarest one from kraut drummer, formerly of Sunbirds, Klaus Weiss' band. An astonishing album which returns to the minimal sounds based on percussion and rhythm of their first album, yet retaining a feel of harmony all through it - this time not provided by the brass instruments that had been added in S.U.B., but though to the high emphasis put on combining a variety of drums each tuned to their perfect pitch, and the contribution of Embryo's bass player Dave King. Klaus Weiss is considered one of the best drummers of the German jazz scene, he was always very active and played with a lot of USA jazzmen travelling Germany like Hampton Hawes, Herbie Mann, Mal Waldron or Johnny Griffin, as well as with German greats as Klaus Doldinger, George Gruntz, Friedrich Gulda, etc. "

A certified maestro of his time, king of Cool Jazz with a penchant for unusual time signatures, Dave Brubeck is as prolific as they come. For their third release, Major Keys lovingly remaster and reissue three of his key pieces as The Dave Brubeck Quartet including the instantly recognisable ‘Take Five’ on 180g vinyl in a Major Keys sleeve.

On the A side one of the most famous jazz pieces of all time. Released in 1959 as part of the Quartet’s Time Out LP, which become the first jazz album to sell more than a million copies with the ‘Take Five’ single also taking that that coveted spot whilst going on to become the best-selling jazz single of all time. Accolades aside, it’s an intricate, absorbing and elating piece of jazz history, with one of the most recognisable melodies ever to be written. Timeless genius written by the quartet’s saxophonist Paul Desmond and performed by Dave Brubeck, Paul, Joe Morello and Eugene Wright, reissued for a new generation of listeners.

The B side sees ever more experimentation from the quartet, with the time signatures Dave heard on the streets of Istanbul providing the inspiration that gave birth to the lead track from Time Out - ‘Blue Rondo a la Turk’. As cool and complex as they get, stirring up those meters like a slick Manhattan. Rounding off the package, American jazz singer Carmen McRae’s 1962 vocal version of ‘Take Five’ gives an extra dose of sophistication to proceedings. All in all, a must have for any discerning music lover.

Sun Wukong (The Monkey King) is a monkey born from a heavenly stone who acquires supernatural powers. After rebelling against heaven and being imprisoned under a mountain for 500 years, he later accompanies the monk Xuanzang on a journey to India. Thus, according to legend, Buddhism is brought to ancient China. This much beloved story, is as much a part of Asian culture as The Iliad and The Odyssey or The Wizard of Oz are to the West.

The 2014 action-fantasy film Monkey King - Havoc In Heaven's Place was directed by Soi Cheang, Starring Donnie Yen as the titular protagonist Sun Wukong. A Hong Kong-Chinese co-production, Yen also serves as the film's action director. The film co-stars Donald Chow, Aaron Kwok, Joe Chen and Peter Ho. The music was composed by Christopher Young.

Funfact; the drums on this soundtrack was done by none other than Dave Lombardo (ex- Slayer)

In China, The Monkey King was highly succesful and became only the third Chinese film to earn more than a billion yuan at the Chinese box office.

The soundtrack of Monkey King - Havoc In Heaven's Place is available for the first time on vinyl as a limited and numbered 2LP of 500 copies on gold vinyl, and includes an insert.

Half speed vinyl edition of the classic album, 'Warrior On The Edge Of Time' by HAWKWIND. Recorded in 1975, the album is a ground-breaking classic from Hawkwind’s long career. Featuring a line-up of DAVE BROCK, NIK TURNER, LEMMY, SIMON HOUSE, SIMON KING and ALAN POWELL, the album is arguably one of the finest rock albums of the mid-1970s. This new Atomhenge half speed master edition of has been cut at AIR Studios utilising the original master tapes. The half-speed mastered cutting process offers the finest audio reproduction and this new edition is the definitive LP release of this classic album

When percussionist, pianist and vibe player Ricardo Marrero recorded the ultra-rare Latin jazz meets funk LP “A Taste” in 1976, little did he know that decades later that sealed copies of the original album would exchange hands among collectors for thousands of dollars. A veteran of the New York salsa and Latin jazz scene since the mid-1970s, Marrero has worked with luminaries such as The Fania All-Stars, Pete “El Conde” Rodriguez, The 5 Stairsteps, Dave Valentin, Angela Bofill and most recently - Ruben Blades. Full of up-tempo funky gems and sizzling slow burners, “A Taste” also includes Marrero’s crossover hit “Babalonia” that received quite a bit of airplay in the mid-1970s. Originally pressed in a very limited quantity on Don King and Lloyd Price’s TSG Records, and with little or no promotion, “A Taste” nevertheless pushed the boundaries of New York City salsa forward and has subsequently become one of the rarest, sought after and expensive records the vinyl world has ever seen. Suffice it to say that the music on this obscure jewel is priceless, featuring some of the greatest players of the era, directed by the great maestro Marrero on keyboards, percussion, vibraphone and vocals with the legendary Dave Valentin (flute, percussion, coro), Ralphy De Jesus (bongos, percussion, quinto), Erasto Bernard (congas), Tito Marrero (drums, timbales, percussion), George Oldziey (flugelhorn, trumpet), Nancy O’Neil (lead vocals, coro), John “Figgy” Figueroa (tenor saxophone, soprano saxophone, baritone saxophone), Sean Mahony (trombone) and John Dearth (trumpet). A taste of Ricardo Marrero & The Group is one that’s sure to satisfy.

After finding fame with the Hollies and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, expatriate Englishman turned West Coast rock icon Graham Nash made an auspicious solo debut on this 1971 disc. With assistance from the likes of David Crosby, Jerry Garcia, and Dave Mason, highlights include the sensitive internal explorations "I Used to Be a King" and "Man in the Mirror" and the impassioned protest anthems "Chicago" and "Military Madness."

If Déjà Vu was a wild canyon party with four competing egos, Songs for Beginners is Nash's introspective morning after — a mix of heartbreak, hope, and a little bit of righteous protest. The new album “Rust and Bones” of the german Death Metal institution MY DARKEST HATE will be released on November 7, 2025. It sounds like a perfect cross-section of the band‘s previous work and contains 10 new songs. The album was produced by the band and Andy Classen (Legion of the Damned, Krisiun, ...), who was also responsible for mixing and mastering! The ingenious cover artwork was created by Remy Cooper from Headsplit Design (Napalm Death, Kreator, ...). There are also guest vocals by Dave Ingram (Benediction, ex-Bolt Thrower) and TZ (Pessimist and Muggeseggel)! With “Flammenland”, a German-language song is also represented for the first time. A video was shot for the song “When the Abyss opens” and there are also lyric videos for the songs “King of Slaves” and “Vengeance my Brother”! The first festival shows have already been played in 2025, including the Skullcrusher Fest in Freiburg. The signs are pointing to a storm!
