SHIRLEY WAHLS had a remarkably short lived solo recording career for someone with such a strong, emotive, deep soul voice. However, her debut single for King Records has to be regarded as one of the greatest double-header Northern Soul 45s of all time. When Shirley's voice kicks in at around 15 seconds you know, in that spine-tingling instant, that you're listening to something very special. At the hands of producer Bill 'Bunky' Sheppard Shirley delivers an incredibly emotional performance straight out of the church where she was somewhat of a star working with the likes of the Argo and Ward Singers. And the B-side is equally stunning!

While being Berlin based and a founding member of - SOLIDE', a label and collective he
runs along with fellow producers Kalyma and MYNY, translating these rather complex
concepts from jazz into house music, wether we are talking about production or DJ Sets,
has been one of D.Y.A´s main goals. Looking back to a relatively young discography, this
summers forthcoming EP´s on Solide and Foul & Sunk, with remix guests like Johannes
Albert, Panthera Krause or Shan, will fall in nicely to showcase D.Y.A's influences and his
quest for a special musical moment.
The very talented Mr. John Daly delivers four master class House tracks for Couldn't Care More. Materia Obscura, launches with witchcraft themed three-part techno series entitled "Trilogia Del Aquelarre", inaugurating with Abstract Division, Cadans, NX1 and Lucindo. Based on Francisco de Goya's black paintings "El Aquelarre", which is exhibited at the Museo del Prado in Madrid.
"Parte 1" is a high-octane and thunderous techno package that includes contributions from Dynamic Reflection duo Abstract Division, Neighbourhood and Clone's Cadans, Nexe Records bosses NX1 and 3TH Records co- founder Lucindo. Kicking things off, Dutch duo Abstract Division's "Blue Void" delivers winding transcendental polyphonics balanced over synthetic techno drums. Cadanss "Don't Tell Me" employs tough heads down percussion and pulsating, metallic drone-like sonics. North East duo Forriner are back with their third and final instalment in the samurai trilogy on their eponymous 'Forriner Music' imprint. Following a couple of impressive showings with previous EP's 'Condor' and 'In the B' they return for their hattrick with '17:17 Neon'. A four tracker of experimental club music for powerful dance floor experiences that offers two originals as well as a banger from Bird Of Paradise and a mouthful of mathematics from Legget and Suade for the remixes.
First up, 'The Jungle Is Deep' which immediately sets off at a rate of knots! Its sharp pace is tempered by the sound of the drums: dull kick, wooly clap, rattling hi-hats while its bassline bleeds in slowly as a dark repeating tone and subtle chord swell and a haunting, cautious vocal reminds you that 'The jungle is dark and deep'. The second half of the track balances its steamrolling kick with an intricate, hypnotic lead as a growling synth line shuffles and recombines over its rumpled techno groove. It's feeling is transportive, the kind of music that makes you close your eyes on the dance floor.
Fellow Northeast alumni take up the remix for 'The Jungle Is Deep'. Steve 'Four Hands' Legget and Suade Adapted hammer a hefty slice of future dub techno from the skeletal remains of the original! Its chunking, discordant drums and manic echo chamber combine with a lilting bassline making sure you know that this is tough music but that it also has a tender heart. Clipped vocals squelch and flutter throughout but these are more textural than melodic, adding extra depth to the track. This trip is all about striking, psychoactive grooves, pushing the swing settings to extremes. Equal parts sinister as it is are playful. Fitting the typical tradition of winsome, weird dance music.
Over on the flip is the title track '17:17 Neon' featuring vocalist Louis Adams and violinist Late Girl (Laura Stutter Garcia) Breathy melancholic vocals and pitched down, endorphin flooded electronica. This is techno in a state of dewey eyed delirium. The neon of the title is very much instructive here, with the vocal being the scattered, shining light that the track playfully hangs itself from.
Jo Howard aka Bird of Paradise takes the reins for the final remix delivering a charging peak-time club tool with relentless batteries of percussion setting the stage for a trippy soundscape. Other than their Northern roots, what these producers have in common is a distinctive approach to rhythm. The restlessness of the sharp stabs of static perfectly guiding the darkly pulsing mood.
Welcome to the seductive groove of Nonetheless, a new duo formed of Florian Bocksrucker and Felix Bergleiter, and the first LP on Neubau. Across four sides of vinyl Nonetheless deliver an intriguing mixture of tough dystopian midnight-drive soundtracks and transporting early electronic/musique-concrète-hybrid interludes. Nonetheless is the sound of cogs turning, churning melancholy and pulsing snake-charmer drum machine palpitation. The end result is catharsis through sinister journeying. From the near-acidic punch of 'Machine of Love and Hate', to the grandiose slow-motion of 'Epik' and the ravey 'Exclusion Zone', Nonetheless' debut record is something special to savour, and is proudly presented as the tenth release on Neubau.

Tresque continues to strive towards his unique hedonistic feel for progression and tribalism on the Aindanão EP. His minimalist techno sound is defined by unlikely shifting patterns that aim directly into your muscle memory.
After his Lensomni EP and Geissle EP on -OUS and an EP on "Care of Editions", Tresque shifts his pace and delivers two hypnotic dancefloor tools on the Aindanão EP. Coming from an extended artistic career as improvisation and experimental musician, Geneva's D'Incise returns to his roots under his moniker Tresque. Inspired by restless dances and the sensation of seemingly endless potential, he explored the interconnections between advanced Techno, Dub and Minimalism with a polyrhythmic approach. Tresque adopts an attitude of purism to formulate an own take on the nature of traditions and rituals.
Invigorating, skewered electronica and bristling, off-kilter techno drive the first release in 15 years by Dublin electronic duo Ambulance (Sunken Foal & Dave Nuremburg), delivering the first EP on the Open Ear label, the latest adventure in sound from the eponymously-titled Irish music festival.
Previously of Planet Mu and Front End Synthetics, the Ambulance project had been put on hold in any capacity this decade until 2017 when they were invited to close out the 2nd edition of the Open Ear festival, Ireland's leading experimental & alternative electronic music festival. Inspired by this performance, the pair returned to the studio and the first fruits of this labour make up the Combover EP. This also marks the first release by Open Ear on it's label which, like the festival, will serve as a platform for experimental dance floor & avant-garde music from the Irish underground.
Kickstarting with the sprawling, ever-evolving, glitched funk of "Caitríona Chéile", the tense, paranoid techno of "Douche Noir" then takes over with the following "Luxury Crackers" keeping the unsettling atmosphere pitched up before it opens up to reveal aslightlygentler side. The EP closes with the *Greasy* title track, a collage of shimmering synthesisers, jittery, free-wheeling drums and oddball sampling, all reaching for air at the same time.

'Mercury' is techno in its purest form, a beautiful groove delineated by an accompanying string meandering synthetically along the track from start to finish, at times broken up by Broom's generous use of delay and reverberating claps, making the track compact and ready for the dance floor. Whereas a darker and more complex techno sound, alive with trademark Broom percussion, identifying with the current techno club scene can be heard spilling out of his second track '77S3'
Carl Finlow also presents us with a little gem of a track, surprising us once again, this time with an electro remix of 'Mercury' in true Silicon Scally style. The resources he puts to use define him as a serious producer, successfully maintaining significance and groove whilst distorting the soundscape by overlaying the sinister rhythm with captivating fettles and shapes of sound, the end result being literally extraordinary.
This EP makes for a must have in any techno sympathiser's collection, as RS17 is an all round excellent and authentic production, made with lots of care and attention.
After a release on I Love Acid and some heavy electro on X0X Records Type-303 delivers a definite acid techno rave anthem that will rip up the dancefloor. You could easily imagine this sort of madness coming from the early 90's acid labels, but in 2018 these kind of tracks are becoming a rare species. On the B-side Finnish HYV is taking the command and remixing the original track into more of a Chicago style jackin' acid (and adding sh**loads of TR-707, but still keeping the track as pumping and mayhem as the original. Limited and numbered edition of 200, after that it's gone, no represses, no digital, so you know what to do!
Our good Parisian friend Max Fader aka S3A is back on Local Talk with a diverse four track EP that delivers on all levels.
It all begins with 'Premiere Rexidence', disco infected big room track that comes with some heavy vocal and horn samples.
Next up is 'End Track For a DJ' which is exactly what the title suggest and comes with old school house beats, classic Chicago piano riffs and some lush strings. Massive!
On the b-side S3A goes back to what he is maybe most know for, 'Searching Force' is an uplifting disco-funk house jam with big samples and jacked up beats.
Last, and possibly our fave tune is 'Deep Mood Vol 4', a supa deep house cut with low end theory chords and a bassline to kill for...raww!
Oh, and those Michael Watford vocal samples just adds to the deepness.
Black Sun Records returns with a monster collaboration from Unhuman & Surit. Unhuman is best known for his contributions on labels such as Instruments Of Discipline, Liber Null & Veleno Viola among many others, his sound running the gamut between noise, power-electronics, EBM & techno; Surit is better known as one half of NX1, recently releasing some solo remixes on his own Nexe Records label and on some others. Together they deliver a powerful 4 track EP, opening with 'Moral Poverty', a perfect driving track with fat bass, metal percussion and layered pads that trap you from the very beginning; next is 'Surrender', a twisted break-cut full of character, complex yet effective, a mind-warping, beautiful journey. Turning to the B-side, the track that gives name to the EP 'Impact Bashing', delivers pure, raw, industrial- techno, oppressive, incisive & brutal. 'Precipitated Paranoia', closes the record, a higher bpm techno cut, defined by the power of the drums and held in tension by jittering, nervous synths.
Electro master Dez Williams joins the Discos Atónicos camp for the label's 4th installment and delivers 5 dystopian cuts infused with his signature sound - crunchy bass lines, spaced out drama, alien funk and a touch of acid. Strongly recommended!

Double LP on heavyweight 180 gram audiophile black vinyl in a wide spined sleeve with new artwork layout. Re-mastered by John Rivers at Woodbine Studios especially for vinyl release. Includes a bonus track not on the CD version and new artwork design. Never has a record been so aptly titled, or so perfectly descriptive of a band's particular vision of the universe. For all that, the original appearance of Taking Drugs was in fact a bootleg on the semi-legendary/semi-notorious Father Yod imprint in 1990, later supplemented with contemporary outtakes and cuts for the Bomp reissue in 1994 and one further song for the Space Age version in 2000. The original seven tracks, dated January 1986 and the first recordings to feature Pete Bain on bass, are collectively known as the Northampton Demos, understandably named for the recording location in a studio outside said English city. Both Sonic and Pierce have been on record as long preferring these takes to the eventual versions that surfaced for the most part on Sound of Confusion. Certainly it's a fine set of performances, showing a definite step toward the more familiar sound of the group and away from the rougher takes on For All the Fucked Up Children of the World. "The Sound of Confusion," aka "Walkin' With Jesus," rips along with fierce energy, Pierce's singing and the rampaging, primitive wail and rumble of the band just wonderful. "Losing Touch With My Mind" takes things to an even higher level, a huge wallop of feedback and beat (Natty Brooker's drumming in particular delivers just what the doctor ordered), Pierce delivering the lines with a flat, cutting drawl. On the slightly lighter tip, "Come Down Easy" is more or less fully in place (aside from singing about it being 1986!), possessing a more upfront but less vocally distinct feel than the Perfect Prescription take. The tracks that surfaced on the later reissues come from a variety of different sessions, including the original take on "Feel So Good" and a good live version of "Things'll Never Be the Same," one of several cuts featuring Brooker's drumming replacement Rosco.
It's not the fall that hurts, it's when you hit the ground - that's what - Failing Upwards' is all about. On Lehult's fourteenth release Lucky Charms breaks away from 4-to-the-floor territory to deliver a fun trip through skippy drum workouts and jazzy warmth. Spread out across the full A-Side is 'Einbahnstraßen-Sound". Heard first on the Lehult Worldwide FM Special last year, this highly requested tune finally sees the light of day in all its trippy, warm, analogue glory. 'Oase' takes things a notch deeper by layering lush synths, swarming melodies and ski field recordings over a laid back electro-groove. 'Rex Dubius' translates the vibe of the first two tracks into a more straightforward, dubby groove - not without the skipping beats and the warm counterparts, though.
