Washington, DC’s DES DEMONAS have been hailed as a favorite of Henry Rollins (KCRW FM/Black Flag), Marc Riley (BBC6 Music/The Fall), and Iggy Pop (BBC6 Music/The Stooges) since the release of their debut LP on In The Red Records and their subsequent singles and EP. DES DEMONAS’ much anticipated follow-up LP “APOCALYPTIC BOOM! BOOM!” is out this fall on In The Red Records. The group is made up of some familiar names from the DC punk, garage, and indie scenes. A Kenyan punk-poet-politique Jacky “Cougar” Abok (Foul Swoops, Thee Lolitas) is on vocals & percussion, Mark Cisneros (Hammered Hulls, Kid Congo and the Pink Monkey Birds, The Make-Up) is on guitar, Paul Vivari (Benjy Ferree, DJ Soul Call Paul) is on Farfisa organ and bass machine, and Matt Gatwood (Two Inch Astronaut) is on drums. "New Modern Homes" is the first album by The Chesterfields since nearly 40 years and was produced by John Parish.

The Chesterfields came to prominence in 1986 as part of a thriving UK underground scene that had turned its back on bland over-produced 1980s chart music and was looking for back to basics pop music. Bands, independent record labels, gig promoters and fanzine editors were making their own entertainment, with The June Brides, The Wedding Present, Primal Scream and The Loft leading the way, supported by Radio One's John Peel and Janice Long. They released 3 albums ('Kettle' getting to number 2 in the independent charts), 5 singles ('Ask Johnny Dee' reaching number 3), and toured the UK and Europe non-stop before splitting in 1989.

They reformed briefly in 1993 to tour Japan and release a fourth album and sixth single, and then returned to action 23 years later when they were asked to play New York Pop Fest in 2016. The current line-up features Simon Barber on bass and vocals, Rob Parry on drums, Helen Stickland on guitar and vocals, and Andy Strickland (of The Loft and The Caretaker Race) on guitar and vocals.

In 2012, Army of God released a cult cut of cold wave: “Salvation”. This was the only EP by the partnership of Aroy Dee and Miss Jagroe, the only EP until now that is.

Army of God are back, after more than a decade the duo return with Endless Skies. Analogue warmth is sliced by surgical synth stabs and bittersweet strings, Jagroe’s unmistakable voice echoes into the distance with the beseeching mantra of “until the music dies”. Aroy Dee’s edit of the title piece fortifies drums for the floor, emotion is further stripped from the already deadpan lyrics as melodies bleed into distorted wonder. The black streak that characterises Army of God turns a shade darker for the flip. A throbbing bass is inked by off-kilter keys, clusters of claps piercing the thicket of static and chilling chorus of “Fear the Night”. Venturing ever deeper into the night, the darker version will set speaker cones shaking and shivering.

Juddering and trembling, basslines are bolstered with vocals invoking the very darkest regions of the dancefloor.

Key Vinyl welcomes on board Turkish born and Amsterdam based Beste Hira, delivering an EP that brings together funky rhythms and soulful vocals. Known for her versatile style and vibrant approach to production, Beste Hiras new offering is an uplifting blend of loopy material, infused with percussive
elements and emotive atmospheres perfect for different moments across the night.

The A-side, Remember Me, opens the EP with a groovy, vocal driven track that sets the tone with its infectious energy. The funky vocal line is layered over a well structured rhythmic base, creating an upbeat, driving experience that feels both positive and dance floor ready. The track maintains a balance of groove and flow, offering a feel good excitement thats certain to resonate with diverse crowds. On the B side, Observe follows with yet another example of the producers inclination for blending vocals with polished production. This track leans on textured soundscapes, while percussive elements and subtle
layers bring depth and sophistication. Its a charming cut that works well in the mix, providing DJs with material thats both dynamic and versatile. Rounding out the EP is Flew of Cliffs, characterized by a thick bassline, while delicate atmospheres give it a sort of ethereal edge.

This ones for the diggers, the dancers, and those who appreciate a sound thats as uplifting as it is refined.

Maryland Death/Sludge reapers, YATRA, were born in 2018. The trio of Dana Helmuth on guitar and vocals, Maria Geisbert on bass, and Sean Lafferty on drums came out incredibly heavy with their first full length Death Ritual (grimoire rec) in 2019. With much critical acclaim, and followed with extensive touring of America and Europe, including many festivals, they proved themselves to be a relentless live touring band. In 2020 YATRA followed with their second full length, the more aggressive and heavier sounding, Blood Of The Night, also greeted overwhelming positive press and touring to follow until covid restrictions began. Not ones to remain idle or take a pause, in spite of touring restrictions, YATRA used their time to write and record another 2020 album, All Is Lost, bringing in more elements of their death metal roots and drenched in blackened intensity. YATRA have signed with Prosthetic Records, and will release a new full length in summer 2022, to be followed with extensive touring of America and Europe, crushing as many stages and festivals as possible. YATRA’s intense live performance is not to be missed.

Keep Right On

The Blues and the Abstract Truth is not just a landmark album in Oliver Nelson's career but in the history of jazz itself

The album features an incredible ensemble of top-tier jazz musicians, often referred to as a "supergroup": Oliver Nelson (alto saxophone, tenor saxophone), Freddie Hubbard (trumpet), Eric Dolphy (alto saxophone, flute), George Barrow (baritone saxophone), Bill Evans (piano), Paul Chambers (bass), Roy Haynes (drums). The early 1960s were marked by a shift from the hard bop of the 1950s to more experimental forms, including modal jazz, free jazz, and the incorporation of avant-garde elements. Musicians like John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, and Charles Mingus were all pushing the boundaries of jazz, and Oliver Nelson's work fits within this broader movement: in this album there's a perfect combination of modern compositional techniques, virtuosic performances, and emotional depth make it an essential listening experience for any jazz fan. It captures the moment when jazz was evolving into new, exciting directions while staying connected to its roots in the blues. The Blues and the Abstract Truth is considered one of the essential albums in modern jazz where Oliver Nelson's compositional style blends hard bop, modal jazz, and blues influences with sophisticated harmonic structures and striking arrangements. The album is noted for ts rich orchestration despite having a relatively small ensemble with use of textures and colours, particularly in tracks like "Stolen Moments," created a new standard in azz arranging.

"Swingin'" is the key word for this great 1962 recording session with the marvelous Dexter Gordon's tenor saxophone, leading an all-star quartet including Sonny Clark - piano - Butch Warren - bass - and Billy Higgins - drums.

The album opens with the infectious, Afro-Cuban groove of "Soy Califa', featuring the unique Billie Higgins beat, and develops through some Hi-Class renditions of romantic standards such as 'Don't Explain' and 'You Stepped out of a Dream', plus the dynamic Latin rhythm of Butch Warren's 'Backbone'.

Released on 15th November via Polydor Records, “Small Changes” is the eagerly anticipated follow-up to Michael’s eponymous third LP, the Mercury Prize winning, and Grammy Award nominated “KIWANUKA”.

“Small Changes” was produced alongside Danger Mouse and Inflo, the team behind the globally acclaimed “KIWANUKA” and its equally acclaimed predecessor, “Love & Hate”. The new record was recorded between London and Los Angeles. Introducing Wishy, a brand new band from celebrated Indiana songwriters Kevin Krauter and Nina Pitchkites. Wishy came to life as a musical partnership between the two Indianapolis musicians when Pitchkites moved back home from Philadelphia in 2021. The two bonded over their love for 90s alternative bands like The Sundays and My Bloody Valentine and soon began crafting their own brand of swirling pop-rock with an introspective, grungy flair. By day Krauter works as a music teacher, giving drum and guitar lessons to students, while Pitchkites is a seamstress by trade and often makes embroidered merch for the band. While Krauter spent the better part of the last decade cementing his place as a torchbearer of Midwestern dream pop with 2018's Toss Up and 2020's Full Hand, Pitchkites delved into her own indie electro-pop project Push Pop, writing songs like "Spinning" that would later be reworked for Wishy. To round out the live band, Pitchkites and Krauter enlisted guitarist Dimitri Morris, bassist Mitch Collins, and drummer Conner Host. Across two trips to Los Angeles in late 2022 and early 2023, Krauter and Pitchkites linked up with friend and producer Ben Lumsdaine, who had some spare time between Durand Jones tours to record the pair's newly written songs. The result of their fruitful time in sunny California is the aptly named Paradise, a breezy and melodic EP that puts on full display the songwriter's musical fluency. Tastefully blending shoegaze, dreampop, and alt-rock into a heavenly haze, Wishy delivers a strong 5-song introduction that's dense with melodic earworms and stirring sentiment. Wishy's debut single for new label home Winspear, the driving and distorted "Donut," showcases Pitchkites' hypnotic vocal and Krauter's melancholic wash of guitars. Written after a period when Pitchkites was driving on a spare, "Donut" laments the cynical capitalism of Midwest living and the reliance on a car to get around. Of the song Pitchkites says "When you've got the possibility of the open road plus the limitations of your shitty car-and you're stuck driving on a donut spare tire- it's a Catch 22." Throughout Paradise, the band laments on American loneliness and idealism as it relates to our everyday lives. Across the EP's five tracks, Pitchkites and Krauter trade bittersweet reflections on love and self actualization over vast, scrappy guitar chords. The whole thing feels equally indebted to early aughts alt-rock and '90s jangle pop. Wishy's music is cathartic, yet underlined by a subtle brooding energy-sitting nicely alongside the work of their contemporaries like Momma or Tanukichan, both of whom Wishy will have shared the stage with. Wishy will be touring this Fall supporting Tanukichan, and the band will make their first festival appearance at LEVITATION in Austin, TX. After that, they have their eyes set on finishing their debut album, slated for release via Winspear in 2024

'Loukoumades' is the latest album from the Dave De Rose led international improvisation project Agile Experiments, released in full on November 15th on None More Records.

The title 'Loukoumades', which is the Greek word for doughnut, was inspired by J Dilla's album "Donuts", tipping the hat at the connection between the Greek location of the sessions, the musical style of Penka's hip-hop/funk drumming and the Agile Experiments avant-garde sonics the project was founded on. The record is built on breaks and beats layered with eerie loops and effects, calling on hip hop, post-punk, psychedelia, dub and further out-there experimental textures. 'Loukoumades' brings to mind the textures of El-P's production work for the likes of Cannibal Ox or DJ Shadow in his Endtroducing era, whilst the live drums and bass guitar give the album a real energy and tightness reminiscent of Portishead's Third or Can at their funkiest.

Before we pack away the poppers for another year, let Red Laser take you for one last spin on the waltzers.
Tried and tested at our recent road block parties in Manchester, these edits shine a light on four primo-grade Italo face melters. Fervently excavated by Bosco over countless visits to Bel Paese and streamlined for the hydrofoil, with some extra added calories for the club.

Opener 'Destiny' tweaks and shudders under analogue arpeggios, dazzling Strat chops and cosmic bass interplay before dropping into a simply glorious female vocal that, thankfully, gets plenty of airtime before Bosco calls close. A track so close to perfection we had to make it longer.
'Flavio', up next - and half sung in Italian so we only know a bit of what she's on about - is another supreme slice of Italo disco from the upper echelons that Bosco snaffled between glugs of Barolo and a face full of worm cheese. Sure to instigate group hugs, 4AM declarations of love, tears of happiness and huge pelvic thrusts dependant on environment and inebriation.

The tingles continue on side B with another supernova burning bright across the stars. 'Newsin' introduces itself with a joyous marriage of marimba and synth before yet another vocal proves Italians really do, do it better when it comes to writing some of the catchiest hooks and choruses in the universe.
'Lace', featuring the record's only male vocal appearance, has a romantic, proto-goth-new-wave vibe; like if Robert Smith and Richard Butler had a chem-sex love child after a wild night in Baia Degli Angeli.

Not sure who the woman in lace is, but we'd defo like to see her down The White Hotel one night...

For our second disc of ‘24, ONO returns to the club with ‘Tek Code’, a brilliant EP from exciting up-and-coming Boorloo artist, Beltrac.

Across five tracks, Beltrac serves up his fresh and considered sound. Spanning dubbed-out minimal rollers that hark back to the sleazy, smoke-infused tech-house of the late '90s and early 2000s. Into exhilarating excursions into frenetic drums and deep bass that display Beltrac’s penchant for rhythm construction and sound design. Setting the tone and tempo for Side B of the disc, Echo Response receives the remix treatment from Eora dub king Command D, who mutates the wonky bass chug of the Side A closer into a hazy after hours dub techno strider.

Combining careful attention to detail and excellent technical production with an undeniable sense of groove, Beltrac delivers a club ready EP that tickles our brain while keeping our body moving. Turn it up loud, this one’s for the late night crew.

Erupt returns with another explosive release in the "Unrest Hazard" series, bringing together a diverse lineup of artists to showcase the best of hardcore, jungle, and drum n bass. Wild Swan, formerly Ugly Duckling, teams up with Mr Dan Master for the frenzied track "*int," while Kool FM regulars Subbreak, D-Region, and Code deliver a pounding remix of "Industry Plant." DJ Terrace and Jon Tetly contribute hardcore jungle tracks "Doing Battle" and "I Get Stu Pid," adding to the record's intensity.

Schoco also makes a return with "Love Is The Answer," a track previously championed by Dead Man's Chest on SWU.FM, now finally getting its vinyl debut.
