There was nothing in contemporary music like Chris Isaak’s Heart Shaped World when it hit shelves in June 1989. More than three decades later, the singer-songwriter’s third album still sounds unique — and claims a backstory nearly as fascinating as the retro-leaning material and standout performances that propelled it to sales of more than 2.5 million copies. Home to the Top 10 smash “Wicked Game,” the set remains a masterful mood piece that invites you to pour a late-night drink, sit in a dimmed room, and relish Isaak’s elegant albeit raw ruminations on love, relationships, and questionable decisions.

Sourced from the original master tapes, pressed at Fidelity Record Pressing, strictly limited to 3,000 numbered copies, and featuring the bonus track “Diddley Daddy,” Mobile Fidelity's UltraDisc One-Step 180g 45RPM 2LP box set of Heart Shaped World unearths the staggering inner details, saturated tones, and brilliant atmospherics of the crisp production. It brings you up close and personal with Isaak’s spectacular singing — impeccably controlled, tense, brooding, steamy, smoldering, haunted — situated amidst stripped-down backdrops that allow every note to fully bloom and decay.

While Isaak’s ever-steady baritone remains the anchor, the contributions of his trusty backing band, the aptly named Silvertone, come across with just as much cool, command, and realism. The indispensable playing of guitarist James Calvin Wilsey particularly emerges with superb clarity and dimensionality. The character of his 1965 Fender Stratocaster, shivering twang of his spring-coiled fills, and his signature use of reverb, delay, and vibrato seamlessly match Isaak's patient deliveries and the band’s unhurried rhythms. Experienced on UD1S with ultra-black backgrounds and a nearly invisible noise floor, Heart Shaped World is in every regard a demonstration disc.

The premium packaging of this UD1S pressing befits its elevated status. Housed in a deluxe slipcase, it features foil-stamped jackets and faithful-to-the-original graphics. Aurally and visually, this reissue is for discerning listeners who desire to immerse themselves in everything involved with the album, not the least of which is the cover art depicting a lost-in-thought Isaak staring ahead and sitting in what appears to be an efficiency apartment. The image epitomizes the record’s lonesome temperaments and pensive themes.

Of course, if not for director David Lynch hand-picking two cuts from Heart Shaped World for his 1990 film Wild at Heart, the record would’ve probably suffered the same fate as Isaak’s prior efforts and gone unnoticed by the mainstream. Despite receiving raves from outlets such as NME, Chicago Tribune, and Rolling Stone upon its original release, the album stalled in the lower quadrants of the Billboard charts and, after a few weeks, dropped off.

Cue the ear of Lee Chesnut. Then the music director for a large Atlanta radio station, Chesnut heard the instrumental version of “Wicked Game” on Lynch’s soundtrack and started airing the album rendition at all hours of the day. Aided by a sensual video featuring Isaak and supermodel Helena Christensen, the song found its way into the public consciousness by early ‘91 and helped make Isaak a most unlikely mainstream star in an era where his techniques had little to nothing in common with popular tastes.

Despite its vintage vibes and shared DNA with legends such as Roy Orbison, Chet Baker, and Glen Campbell, Heart Shaped World transcends nostalgia, rockabilly, and throwback tropes. For all the melodrama and sadness at hand, Isaak’s gorgeously transparent singing dives deep underneath emotional surfaces. He mines subtleties that indicate his feelings go beyond heartbreak and anguish, and occasionally suggest frustration, menace, and anger. You can hear it in his quivering falsetto, and the slow and methodical ways he allows delicate whispers to break into shadowy phrasing that crosses over to the darker sides of romance and desire.

That approach bolsters the title track, which suggests calm yet moves on ominous currents — its simmering pace and snare-drum snappiness foreshadowing Isaak raising the volume and urgency during the coda. The southwestern-tinged “Wrong to Love You” plays with similar concepts of hesitation, unease, and discord, Isaak careful never to fully erupt and give anything away. His poised deliveries offer a master class in the art of insinuation and hurt on “Nothing’s Changed,” sent up with a wordless backing chorus and crackling guitar lines straight out of a Memphis blues joint.

Heart Shaped World further boosts its merit via its abundant stylistic variations, from the upbeat country-and-western trot of “I’m Not Waiting” and Spanish acoustic shimmer of the jazz-based ballad “Blue Spanish Sky” to the swinging horn-accompanied grooves of “Don’t Make Me Love You” and desert smokiness of the understated “Kings of the Highway.” On the latter, Isaak comes across as resigned and absolute. His singing and pain worm their way into your soul, and echo akin to the way the music prepares to strike when you least expect.

“Trouble going 'round,” Isaak croons right as the album begins. “Trouble going down.” Damn straight.

Cold and sinister combat electro by Russian newbies Larionov & St Theodore. Infectious analogue rhythms emerged deep down the hearts of these young souls. Bleak Warfare presents five cuts with each their own desire for the dancefloors.

Released in Nottingham at the turn of the millennium, when the city was at the heart of an exciting underground scene, Lounging sits between trip-hop's slowed breaks and deep house's low-end drive. Drum programming is loose but controlled, with swung rhythms underpinning warm basslines and restrained chord patterns. Tracks alternate between vocal cuts featuring Gea Russell and Isi Samuel, and instrumental pieces built on short sampled phrases and repeating hooks. It's a perfect record for either pre-club or post-rave, especially on warmer days, and this anniversary edition has been remastered by Shawn Joseph. A welcome return for a low key classic.

The mighty Trelik label has long led the way when it comes to the best minimal in the underground and nothing about that changes with this new one from German pair Anro and Kuyateh. They collide their creative minds on four cuts starting with 'All We Have', which, like many of the sounds on this label, fizzes with a light synth touch while rolling on frictionless drums. 'Crocket' is another luminous sound with dubby drum loops that are supple and seductive, as spaced out motifs up top bring a curiousness. 'Gametime' layers in some warped and molten acid sounds to dubby tech rhythms and 'Hi' is a final sophisticated closer for those who like it deft and deep.

Dub techno runs on ghosts and twins. The ghost is the echo that outlives the hit – the reverb tail, the delay feeding back into empty space. The twin is the dub itself: every sound shadowed by its own double, the original and its darker reflection locked into the same groove. Ghosts & Twins gathers four cuts that work that space.

This is BLACKINSTOCK's Black Gold Dub Techno with both feet on the floor – measured but muscular, weighted, no filler and no drift. The groove stays locked, the low end does the talking, and every echo earns its keep. Music for a dark room and a loud system, not a candle and a beanbag.

Curated by Kirill Matveev, who called in friends and long-time collaborators from across the MixCult circle, the record plays as four takes on one idea. Spectral Model opens with "Distancial" – a new name here, making a first outing on the MixCult family, and a fitting one to raise the ghosts. Djalo follows with "Model Dub," dubbing minimal and techno the way he has across MixCult, Souplex and Apnea: economical, hypnotic, built for the low end. On the flip, Schime – Hungarian producer Sanyi Egyed, working dub techno, deep and minimal since 2013 across Phonoda, Welter and the MixCult ranks – turns in "Phased." Closing the record, The Don Of Dubhouse is the new alias of TM Shuffle, Finnish producer and head of Vuo Records, no stranger to MixCult.

Some records point at the dancefloor; this one points at the sky. Decryption Of Reality is dubtommy's first solo record for NOREPRESS – the sublabel where he first surfaced on 2022's Pasanauri Way — and it lands as dub tech house wired to the stars: deep, driving, and lit from somewhere far off.

Across four tracks, wide synths stretch over a steady, danceable pulse and drag the groove off-world – less a night in a club than a signal caught from deep space. Three cuts keep the floor moving, bright and propulsive; the closer, "CDEFGAB" – named for the bare notes of the scale – sets down softly into something quieter and near-weightless, back to first principles.

Ste Roberts delivers his debut vinyl EP for the label — four seriously solid cuts of twisted, underground tech house.

The title track “The Washing Machine” is a driving peak-time workout built around Ste's trademark analogue synths, drum machines, rolling sub bass, sharp drums, bleeps and plenty of weird little twists and turns. It's already had plenty of road testing through Ste's DJ sets, including Houghton and fabric, and it does exactly what you want it to do on a dancefloor.

The A2 “Wong Kei” keeps things rolling with another slick and twisted piece of Ste's production. Clever sound manipulation and a seriously infectious groove make this another one that's going to work hard for Djs.

Over on the flip, Evasive boss Rob Pearson gets stuck into B1 “The Washing Machine”, remixing it into his trademark peak time tech, rolling sub-bass territory and adding a few extra mangled instructions for your increasingly misbehaving washer.

B2 “Shoplifting Like That, Yeah” brings Ste’s trademark electro/breakbeat sound into the mix, with tripped-out vocals, wobbling bass and a groove that’s already been causing a real stir in his live sets. Ste has been using it to open his shows, and it’s easy to hear why — a twisted, energetic way to get things moving.

Straight from Girona, Roto lands on SPHERART Records with Sardaukar, five cuts of stripped-back electro. Dry drums, heavy basslines and raw machine funk run across the record, from broken grooves to colder, more introspective moments. Direct, restless and full of character, Sardauka carries Roto’s own language from start to finish.

Ritacco & Igna, the minds behind Toscal Records, land on SPHERART Records for KUNST003. PICHT POINT EP delivers four groove-heavy cuts, driven by rolling rhythms, playful details and straight-to-the-floor energy. From “Picht Point” to “Express”, the formula stays clear: no detours, just groove.

Back after its first release, Life Enigma returns for a second chapter: a dark and warped dispatch from the void.

This time, the London-based artist of many aliases Zuul takes the reins, exploring moodier territory at the low end of the frequency. The result is three slow-burning, horror-flecked cuts that sit somewhere between electro and new wave, each driven by a sinister vocal. The release is rounded off by a more dancefloor-oriented remix from C.ru.z on the B2.

On the A-side, My Mind Is Mean is a driving, sub-heavy opener with menacing synths that do the title justice. It's Hell In There, It's Horror shifts into something more melodic and upbeat, with eerie textures and an ominous undercurrent.

And when we thought things couldn’t get any meaner, Ask Me sinks into haunted, mid-tempo bass hypnosis on the flipside, while C.ru.z’s remix leans further into its darker side with an even nastier groove.

Running Hot welcomes Bliss Inc. for RHR05 with the Monday EP, four cuts of warm, groove-led house music built for intimate spaces and long nights.

The EP arrives during a busy year for Bliss Inc., following a recent release on Punctuality and the start of a new residency at Tokonoma in Frankfurt, where he’s been regularly playing the Holo and Sakuru floors. Those smaller rooms have had a clear influence on the EP, with subtle shifts, detailed percussion and hypnotic grooves given room to unfold.

Across the four tracks, rolling low-end sits alongside understated melodies and intricate percussion. The EP draws from the deeper end of house and minimal without ever sounding overly referential, and feels just as at home in a low-lit warm-up as it does deep into the night.

Zonate welcomes Sancra for its seventh release. Hailing from Italy, Sancra's sound strikes a fine balance between dark, driving energy and groove for the dancefloor, coupled with the emotional elements that regularly feature in his work.

The A-side delivers two peak-time cuts that put this on full display. Beyond The Skies takes a darker tone, blending Sancra's unique neo-trance and techno style. The Truth Behind The Mystery leans further into euphoric territory, built around a catchy, emotive melody.

T. Jacques presents ‘Rowhill Trax’: - four cuts of straight-up house music, drawing on the raw sound of the ’90s and early ’00s. Heavy low-end, swinging rhythms and resonating chords run throughout, keeping things stripped back and firmly focused on the dancefloor.

Opening with ‘Worked Up (House Mix)’, a high-energy groove of filtered chords and analogue drum programming, followed by ‘Rub Down’, built around slamming, hard-hitting drums and a low-slung bassline.

B1 - Softlight Light cymbals and delicate textures introduce us to Softlight, a track which sees Aural Imbalance guiding the listener through the clouds to a haven of gentle serenity where your troubles simply fade away, punctuated by a stunningly programmed and memorable Hot Pants break pattern, timid classic basslines and an overall plethora of sun-baked energy - perfect for the headphones and the record box - as always. B2 - Airwave Immensely old school vibes are immediately present in Airwave, with analogue breaks and succinct female vocal samples that mingle with echoing melodies and synthwork to create a beautifully flowing and unique slice of atmospheric gold. Additional breaks are fused into the mix as the track progresses, elevating the piece to the heights we have come to expect from Aural Imbalance, yet never cease to amaze. C1 - Speed of Light Gentle cymbals and filtered breaks open Speed of Light, before a crisp barrage of amen goodness descends and dominates proceedings - just as a good amen should! Programmed to perfection with an immensely danceable rolling pattern, the amens lead us through a sea of washing synths and delicate melodies, intertwining and frolicking in the mix, completing a charming and memorable piece. C2 - Fading Star Playful strings and a luscious 808 bassline play with sumptuous padwork in the intro to Fading Star, a track which sees Aural Imbalance capture the essence of 90’s jungle and it’s symbiotic relationship with atmospheric drum & bass perfectly. Developing throughout with an array of unassuming effects and a quietly moving vibe, Fading Star is the perfect addition to sets spanning the entire history of this music. D1 - Drifting Under Bright Skies Aural Imbalance resurrects the excellent break last featured on Spatial in his sublime track Surface Area, this time chopped and sliced to a different vibe, with kickdrums at the forefront and that fantastically crunchy snare deployed more sparingly. Shimmering padwork and light melodies dance across the mix throughout to leave us with a refreshingly unique and memorable track you won’t be able to get enough of. D2 - Violet Completing this fine LP of old school ambient breakbeat mastery, Aural Imbalance deploys Violet to see us out - a climactic-feeling romp that opens with quiet intent before launching the listener through cheery melodic tones and bustling soundscapes, sprinkled liberally with airy pads and fluttering micro melodies that zip and whoosh around thick analogue breakbeats. From the expressive blueprint laid out by the Detroit pioneers, a wide range of tempos and energies emerged. Techno's evocative synthesis and intricate drum machine programming was especially potent for deeper explorations away from the dancefloor. Documents Of A Different Reality casts back to when technology was steering quantum leaps in communication and creativity and the future was shot through with naive optimism. It was also a time when the media and industry hadn't caught up with the music to box it into distinct categories. As such, there's a sense of creative freedom that informs the older tracks on the album, from 2000 And One and Sandy Huner's sparkling example of early Dutch techno to London-based LA Synthesis' detailed take on braindance and the majestic night sky vision of cult legend Stasis. There's also space for rare, late 90s machine funk from Icelandic outlier Thor alongside Connective Zone's charmingly fractured bleep dream and a more contemporary offering from Barcelona-based duo Permutation. Meanwhile Mind Control and CiM both capture the spirit of stylistic fusion with twitchier rhythms that take influence from hardcore and jungle as much as techno. With an atmospheric through-line of melancholic pads and harmonious leads, this small but perfectly formed collection naturally follows on from previous, equally thought-out compilations on Cold Blow, and adds a distinct perspective on the history and continuing legacy of pioneering early ambient techno.

The opening release introduces Tolyatti producer Pasadena with 'Vodichka Nice', a laid-back, groove-led gem that recalls 'Stepoing Into Tomorrow' era Donald Byrd with its seductive drums, squelchy slow-bass and soft-focus melodic wonder. It's already becoming a fave on the scene and on the reverse, respected producers Scruscru and Tony Lavrutz reshape the original with a remix that leans into deeper club territory, though keeps the bright melodies and inviting horizontal feel. Rain Dance is the debut album from Bristol-based producer Arcane, released on Over/Shadow. Across eight tracks the record explores atmospheric jungle, drum & bass and breakbeat influences, combining deep bass pressure with rich melodic detail and immersive sound design. The album moves between expansive, journey-like pieces such as “Nebula” and “Metropolis”, heavier dancefloor cuts like “Underground” and “Fear", resulting in a spacious but rhythmically detailed LP that balances classic junglist energy with a cinematic sense of atmosphere.

After more than a decade shaping dancefloors and curating sound, ROOTS steps into a new chapter with the launch of its vinyl imprint: ROOTS LTD, a platform dedicated to exploring the essence of “the sounds of Roots.”

The inaugural release comes courtesy of Gojnea76, delivering a refined four-track EP built with the dancefloor in mind. Drawing on the spirit of ‘90s tech house and memphis rap, the record blends solid basslines, groovy vocal cuts, and rolling pads into a cohesive and timeless journey.

With his unmistakable signature, Gojnea crafts a debut that feels both nostalgic and forward-thinking, a statement piece to mark the beginning of ROOTS LTD.

A decade into life, Secret Society marks this notable milestone year with a release that stays true to its ethos of depth and groove. Ewan Jansen started producing in the early 90s in Perth, often with the same hardware he used in his live shows. He's back on the label with two driving cuts built squarely for the dancefloor: 'Hydroid' is bright mid-tempo techno with pixelated synth charm, and 'Bodywash' is a deeper, more syrupy sound for late-night cruising. Alongside them sits a more introspective collaboration with Italian producer Luca that trades peak-time punch for texture and restraint. On remix duties, John Dimas adds his trademark crisp momentum and understated flair, a fitting choice given his long-standing connection to the camp.

Planar Traits adds to the Spectral Bounce catalog with SPEC08: Distance EP. Since 2021 the Stockholm-based artist’s creations have combined evocative soundscapes with dancefloor functionality. Here he steps up with four hydrographic cuts spanning the groove-led, the mysterious and the cerebral.

Beginning the expedition with the type of psychedelic and lithe tech-house for which Spectral Bounce is known, the A-side is glistening with aquatic shimmer. “Variations in Hue” and “Distance” are club cuts embellished with mystical melodies and sonar pulses, both propelled by chunky drums and driving sub frequencies.

The B-side goes deeper, revealing a more contemplative zone in which soft echoes of Detroit (“Bloom”) are spliced with 1990s Artificial Intelligence sensibilities (“Never-ending Light”). A perfect soundtrack for living room transcendence, as much as pelagic immersion.

Guy From Downstairs brings a deeply human touch to the machinery with the Brighter EP.
It opens with "No Fun," where a dry, stripped-back rhythm plays hard to get, anchored by an emotive, raw vocal that cuts straight through the tension—it is a smirk with actual soul behind it. Just as that mood settles, the title track cracks the window open, letting in an unpretentious, genuine warmth that completely changes the temperature of the room. Known to many a canny Bandcamp digger through his excellent Lost Acid series of digital albums, Jim Thompson is a London based producer, skater & graphic designer. His debut vinyl release came last year on Ooze Records, run by Laurence, an estimable selector based in the excellent Palace Records store in Brixton.

A cult electronic artefact from 1999 resurfaces here as DHS's 'From Outer Space' lands once more on wax. Ben Stokes' project has always thrived on the fringes of breakbeat and acid experimentation. Stretching across 12 minutes, 'From Outerspace' is a patiently unfurling trip built on hypnotic loops, eerie atmospherics and a restless low end that never quite settles. Fairground oddities, UFO signals and disembodied shrieks drift in and out of focus to tease the floor before locking into a rugged, heads-down stride. On the flip, 'DHS Theme 2014' and 'Voodoo Breaks' extend the sampledelic ritual with squelch and understated menace.

Two stone cold classics right here from the Roy Ayers masterminded RAMP, taken from the holy grail album Come Into Knowledge. Sampled the world over, influentially positive and as prized as they get, South Street’s new sub-label South Street Soul couldn’t have picked a more perfect double header to reissue as their inaugural release.

Although the RAMP acronym Roy Ayers Music Productions bared Ayers’ name, he did not perform with the Ohio band instead writing, arranging and producing the tracks alongside Edwin Birdsong and also William Allen. Drafting in some of the best session musicians in the game, from vocalists Sibel Thrasher and Sharon Matthews, The Spinners drummer John Manuel, guitarist Landy Shores and Cincinnati bass maestro Nate White, the result was pure ethereal excellence.

Rare groove at its finest ‘Daylight’ is one of the standout cuts from RAMP’s only album - soulful, sumptuous and laced with a celestial touch that takes this track to another realm of conscious. A track that was famously sampled by A Tribe Called Quest for their hit ‘Bonita Applebum’ and J Dilla’s remix of Common – Come Close.

On the B side, a Roy Ayer’s masterpiece 'Everybody Loves The Sunshine' given the RAMP revamp, an end of the night masterpiece, a hazed-out dreamer - just downright blissful grooves from start to finish. Ready-made to ride out into the sunset with.

For the 62nd release on Memoria Recordings, Romanian producer Plusculaar delivers a hypnotic collection of deep, groove-driven electronic cuts that move far beyond simple club conventions. Known for a sound shaped by minimal grooves, shuffled rhythms, and immersive atmospheres, Plusculaar builds sonic journeys that reward patient listening and intuitive mixing.
